  • How I stayed 11 hours on tree top to avoid being assassinated by Police – Melaye

The lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye, has said contrary to the kidnap reports, the gunmen who attacked his vehicle on his way to Kogi State on Thursday wanted to kill him.

He alleged that his attackers were policemen.

Melaye, who briefed journalists in Abuja on Sunday, said he escaped the alleged assassination attempt around Gwagwalada along the Abuja-Lokoja Road on his way to attend a court case in Lokoja, the state capital.

Melaye said he ran into the bush and hid on a tree for 11 hours.

The lawmaker explained that he left Abuja in the early morning of Thursday for Lokoja and observed that a Toyota Sienna car was trailing him. He said the car overtook his car, blocked his way and the occupants started to shoot at his vehicle.

The lawmaker, who defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party on Tuesday, said when the suspected assassins realised that his vehicle was bulletproof, they attempted to burn it.

Melaye said, “When I realised that they wanted to burn my vehicle, I quickly opened the car and ran into the bush. I had to run for my life. It was the grace of God that made me to escape. When I got into the bush, I climbed a tree and stayed there. While on the tree, I saw two of the policemen coming to look for me, but they didn’t know I was on the tree. I was in the bush for 11 hours.

My brother that was in one of the vehicles didn’t know what happened, so he had to raise the alarm that I was kidnapped. He went to the Gwagwalada police station and reported the matter.”

  • Saraki called Dino Melaye ‘clown’ – Sen. Adamu

Senator Abdullahi Adamu (APC-Nasarawa West) has disclosed that Senate President Bukola Saraki once told him that Senate Dino Melaye (PDP-Kogi West) is a “clown”.

Speaking to Daily Trust, Adamu, a former governor of Nasarawa State, revealed that Saraki said Melaye deserved to be used and forgot about.

He said: “I’ll not forget one day when I thought we could do things properly, when I thought things happening were not quite in keeping with the integrity that is supposed to govern the affairs of the Senate, I was talking with the Senate President. Some of the things I was pointing as example was that kind of behaviour.

“He said to me ‘no, forget Dino is a clown.’ That’s what Saraki said to me. He’s alive, let him come out and deny saying that to me. Dino is a clown, so what do you do with clowns? And he was using him up to that day.

“He came dancing and was like ‘these are the disciple of this government, and Abdullahi Adamu is one of them.’ I don’t care a hoot about that. I have more serious situations than that.

“A senator dancing before another senator? The Senate is a leveler. Even if I’m 101 years and I’m in the Senate and a boy of 18 years got elected to the Senate, if that was permissible age, by the time we get sworn in, we’re equals.”

He said, ‘’I learnt that he was attacked this morning in Gwagwalada on his way to Lokoja, Up till now, I have not been able to reach him. I don’t know where he is at the moment.’

Mohammed stated that the prosecuting counsel was not ready to open the case “due to the reason best known to them.”

The officer in charge of Police prosecution, Theophilus Oteme, told the court that the prosecuting counsel had an emergency, which made it “extremely difficult to appear in court.”

Melaye disclosed this on Saturday, a day after the police accused some persons in his convoy of attacking their personnel in Kogi State.

“The account of the police is false and illogical. I will honour the invitation of the Kogi State Police Command on Thursday, despite the attempts on my life,” Melaye told Channels Television.

The Senator had accused the police of shooting at his convoy on his way to inaugurate a project at his constituency on Thursday in Kogi.

He explained that he was riding in a convoy of about 20 vehicles headed for the scheduled event and his cars were the second and third, having being led by the out riding Hilux vehicle of the personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The lawmaker noted that the police claimed that the vehicles at the back shot at them and wondered why “they shot at my cars which were in the second and third on the convoy.”

He alleged that the incident clearly indicated an attempt on his life if not for his bulletproof vehicles, claiming that the gunshots were directed at the owner’s sitting side of the cars.

Melaye purported further that after the scenario which played out on the road, there was another attack on his house in Aiyetoro where gunshots were fired sporadically.

He also said he had written to the police and the NSCDC through his lawyer, to seek protection for his planned visit.

The lawmaker claimed that while the NSCDC deployed some personnel to escort him, there was no provision made by the police.

  • PDP rejects Dino Melaye, says he’s a liability

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Kogi West Elders’ Forum (KWEF) has rejected any attempt to impose Senator Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi West) as a senatorial candidate of the party in 2019.

In a viral video on Instagram, the lawmaker had declared his intention of returning to the PDP.

Reacting, Chairman of the Forum, Shaibu Momoh said if Melaye was allowed to contest in any free and fair election in the state now, the party would be defeated.

He said: “Melaye is seen as too controversial and his unacceptable behaviors are the serious negative views of the public against him. He cannot win any election in a free and fair atmosphere and PDP should therefore not gamble with him as a candidate for now.

“He needs a serious reformation period which PDP Kogi state do not have the luxury of time to dispense.

“The leadership of PDP in the state under the two former governors of the state, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, Captain Idris Wada, senator Tunde Ogbeha Alhaji Musa Ahmadu and host of other critical stakeholders have been struggling to rebrand a PDP that can recapture power from an aggressive non-performing government of APC in the state.

“They have reconciled several prominent strong men and women who came back to the party and their re-entrance back to PDP is without any condition or concession but genuine. Imposition of a Senatorial candidate will cause a major derailment and unimaginable crisis that PDP may not overcome before the general election.

“The critical leaders are on ground and they understand this great danger and trap, hence their rejection of this Dino imposition.

“Senator Dino Melaye is welcome to PDP as specified under the Constitution of the party. He is free to aspire to any position of his choice but must take cognisance of existing mutual arrangement,” added Momoh.
