Consumption of okra can lead to infertility in men, medical researcher warns
Okra, though very nutritious, can lead to infertility in men of reproductive age, Dr Ochuko Erikainure, a Senior Research Officer at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research (FIIRO), Oshodi, Lagos, has warned.
Erukainure, also a nutritionist and biochemist, gave the warning on Saturday in an interview with newsmen in Lagos.
According to him, too much consumption of okra, especially its seeds can lead to infertility in men of reproductive age.
An online publication, www.medicalhealthguide.com says Okra, known in many English-speaking countries as lady’s fingers, is a flowering plant in the mallow family.
“Okra is an annual herb that is widely cultivated for its edible green seed pods in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate climates.
“Okra is a hardy plant that can grow even with less water and in hot conditions.’’
Erukainure said that okra has a unique substance called “GOSSYPOL”.
“Gossypol inhibits sperm production and motility by blocking several enzymes that are highly important in energy metabolism in sperm and sperm producing cells.
“Okra seeds are very rich in toxic pigment called Gossypol which promote infertility in men by arresting sperm production (spermatogenesis) even at lower dose.
“Gossypol are oil soluble and natural polyphenol secreted by plants as a defence against predators,’’ he said.
The senior researcher said that in some countries, okra seeds were, however, used for natural contraceptive for men.
“Due to proapoptotic activities in okra seeds (it means killing of cells), gossypol is still under investigation as a possible anticancer agent,” he said.
The nutritionist said that in spite of its effects in men, consumption of okra could be of health benefits to the diabetes, obesity or overweight people.
“Okra is very high in dietary fibres, reduce calories intakes into the body, ability to limit nitric oxide build up in the blood and lipid (fat) and reduces the risks of cancers.
“Okra is an African vegetable that has been a staple of African and Indian cuisine for many years, and also used for medicinal purposes.
“The health benefits of okra can be attributed to its nutritional and phytochemical constituents making it a vital crop.
“One hundred grammes of okra has been reported to meet over 20 per cent of the daily values which the body needs.
“It contains a rare combination of carbohydrates, vegetables, minerals and vitamins.
“Not less than 10 different vitamins and minerals can be found in okra such as vitamin A, which is great for the skin, vitamin C and E which prevent cell damage in the body,’’ he said.
Erukainure said because “okra is high in fibre, it has positive impact on digestive system which assists with gastrointestinal difficulties.
“Including okra in our daily diet along with physical healthy exercise routine will prevent and treat diabetes, meaning that okra plant contributes to a more active lifestyle”.
Erukainure said that okra has been identified to have insulin-like activity in experimented animals.
“It is also a potent anti-diabetic source, which can be attributed to its chemical constituents,’’ he said.

‘Men are scared to approach me’-Yvonne Okoro
It is hard to believe when beautiful actress, Yvonne Okoro tells you she has been single for two years. The curvy and sexy actress who seem to have attributes men won’t underestimate has given hints on why she is still single. She made this known during the launch of Glam Africa Magazine.
According to her:”The issue is men don’t have balls to come forward to ask me out because they think I am already hooked or perhaps I am very high maintenance.
“Also, I may still be single because most people think celebrities are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing partners but that is a very wrong perception. A good number of celebs are single because they are confused as to who to accept in their life. You see, you are not sure if the person is coming in because of your fame and money or the person wants to be with you because of real love”.
“It is not about money but if a man is not brave enough to come forward then I do not think I want to be with such a person. Anyway, who wants to be with a timid man?”she queried.

Men of these days are weaklings- Yetunde Bakare throws bombshell
Called ebony beauty by her numerous fans, Yetunde Bakare without doubts is one of the actresses to watch out for in Nollywood. With movies like Ajobi, Alani Baba Labake, Sister Caro under her sleeves, Yetunde has remained the screen darling of many lovers of Yoruba movies.
In this exclusive interview with TheNewsGuru, the award winning filmmaker opens up on her journey into acting, changes she desires to see in Nollywood, her opinion about Nigerian men and lot’s more
How did you discover your passion for acting?
I started acting in my church, I was part of a drama group years back in church. We go from one church to another to perform. It has been over ten years ago. This ignited my passion for acting. I joined the movie industry in 2009.
In an interview, you spoke about what a bathroom scene did to you career. Can you expatiate on that?
In the movie, I was in the bathroom and a certain guy was peeping. I rushed out and was screaming. It was really fun shooting that movie and it generated mixed reactions from fans.
What changes will you love to see in the movie industry?
I just want people to realize that it’s not about producing movies alone. It’s about doing something fantastic. Your driving force should go beyond the money and the fame. When I shot my first movie Ajobi, I wasn’t looking at the money. I spent a lot of money on the movie because I knew what I wanted and decided to go for it.Despite the fact that I have produced movies after Ajobi, I still get awards based on the film. You don’t need to follow the multitude, you need to stand out.
People believe that actresses are promiscuous what do you think about that?
The reason why people criticize us so much is because we are public figures. There is nothing private about us, even when we don’t do things, people will say we do it because of the attention we get. I once watched an interview of Uche Jombo clearing the air about a certain viral report stating that she has never dated any man In Nigeria. Sometimes, the media misquotes us. Actresses are not promiscuous; we read our scripts and interpret our roles well. The fact that I acted as a prostitute doesn’t make me a prostitute. I am disciplined.
How do you go about playing romantic roles?
For me, acting is supposed to be real so we don’t have a choice than to make it real. That doesn’t mean, one would go completely nude. When you are acting the passion must be there
Have you ever been turned on acting a romantic role?
It has never happened to me nor has it happened to the person I am playing the role with. It’s not possible because we usually have a lot of people on set. You cannot even think of it. It’s a shame; how can an actor be playing a romantic role and the next thing you have is an erection? That’s not professional.
What if you are playing the role with someone you are attracted to?
Attraction is different from interpreting a role. It’s good when you can control yourself. A lot of self-control is needed on this job.
How long have you kissed for on set?
Long enough, I kissed Lateef Adedimeji in Ibaje and nothing happened. He is my colleague.
How long have you had to shoot and re-shoot a kissing scene?
You have to do it very well so you won’t have to repeat the kiss. That’s why you have to kiss the individual well, so you won’t have to do it again. It has happened to me before. I played the role of a housemaid that was sleeping with the boss and his two sons . While we were shooting the movie, I had to re-shoot my kissing scene because my director told me the kiss was not real enough.
Have you ever dated someone in your industry?
No
Can you date someone in the movie industry?
No, this is because almost all the guys are married. I cannot. If I am married to a fellow entertainer, there is a possibility that we won’t have time for our kids because of the nature of our job.
What makes you cry?
I hate lies and being taken for granted. These traits can make me cry. Before, I used to hate blackmail. Now, I don’t care anymore. I hate lies especially when it’s coming from someone close to me, someone I believe should be responsible and mature.
Has love been good to you?
Yes
Does that mean you haven’t been heartbroken?
I have been heartbroken and I have moved on.
What is your general believe about men?
My general believe about men is that men of these days are weaklings. Most of them are not mature enough because they don’t know what they want. Most of them are not man enough when it comes to loving a lady. Most of them will sleep with a lady and still be attracted to somebody else. They don’t have the courage to love just one lady. They cannot stay true to one lady; they just want to sleep around. They want to eat their cake and have it. They want to lie to you. Almost all of them are not real. You already know you won’t get married to a lady, you sleep with her without condoms, she gets pregnant and you reject it? It shows you are a weakling.

Men should go for fertility test too – Expert
A fertility expert, Dr Sharon Arigbe-Osula, has urged men to always go for fertility test instead of “putting all the blames on their spouses”.
Arigbe-Osula, a Volunteer Fertility Consultant with Rose of Sharon, an NGO, made tha call on Sunday in an interview with newsmen in Lagos.
She said in the clinics women were more visible than men in the treatment and diagnosis of infertility in couples.
“In our clinics today, we see more of the male infertility, men never go to clinics; they just assume it is their wives that are infertile.
“However, a lot of men have now become enlightened; they now come to the clinic with their wives, and later realise that the problem is from them (men),’’she said.
According to the expert, women above 42 find it difficult to conceive due to decline in quality and quantity of eggs.
She, however, urged couples to always go for fertility test so as to avoid such complications.
“You will be surprised to see couples that have been married for seven years and never had one single semen fluid analysis done.
“Couples need to be fully accessed, they need to be diagnosed, so that they can get treatment, it’s not one treatment that fits all, every couple has a treatment that would work for them,” Arigbe-Osula said.
