Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is ready to send Kepa Arrizabalaga away on-loan.

The Sun says Chelsea are ready to send Kepa out on loan after landing Rennes keeper Edouard Mendy as their new first-choice.

While Chelsea insisted no decision has yet been taken on Kepa’s future, it is understood that Frank Lampard will assent to the Spaniard leaving on loan before next month’s deadline.

Kepa, 25, has struggled to live up to the world record £71m fee Chelsea paid Athletic Bilbao to land him as Thibaut Courtois’ replacement in 2018.

He fell out of favour last term after a series of high-profile errors before the lockdown.

And while the Spaniard regained his place at the outset of Project Restart, he lost it again to Willy Caballero for the FA Cup semi-final and Final.

Rennes are delighted with the business achieved over Edouard Mendy’s move to Chelsea.

RMC says the deal was settled last night, with the goalkeeper due to be confirmed a Chelsea player today.

Mendy will sign a five-year contract and join Chelsea for an initial €24m fee plus a further €6m in bonuses.

Rennes management are pleased, having signed Mendy three years ago from Reims for €4m.

The Senegal international is France born and raised so doesn’t require a UK work permit.

Chelsea agree deal with Senegal goalkeeper to replace Kepa

Chelsea have agreed a deal with Rennes to sign goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The Senegalese international, 28, is wanted by manager Frank Lampard to increase competition with club record £71m signing Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Kepa was at fault for Liverpool’s second goal in the 2-0 Premier League defeat on Sunday, which was described as “a clear mistake” by Lampard.

The Spanish international was also dropped last season after errors in games.

That included the FA Cup final, where the 25-year-old was replaced by second-choice goalkeeper Willy Caballero, who is 38.

Following the defeat at home to champions Liverpool, Lampard said Caballero would start the Carabao Cup tie against Barnsley at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

He added: “Kepa has to keep working and he has to have support around him, that’s very clear.

“Individually players need support, particularly from myself, and I give that to all the players. And now we’ve got to try to give him confidence, because that’s important.”
