La Liga: Why Barca is not renewing Messi’s contract

Barcelona’s debt problem is preventing the renewal of Lionel Messi’s contract.

Expansion quotes the financial adviser Ramón Álvarez de Mon, who shared his insight into the hurdles facing Barça as they try and push Messi’s new deal through.

“Barça must generate €400 million in capital gains and savings on salaries,” the expert explained.

The cited media assured that La Liga could oppose any contract offered by Barça that is for two years as a player but paid over five (as if he was an ambassador), given it would be a way around the league’s financial controls and fair play.

Meanwhile, the tax office could also have something to say.

“If Messi is paid for two years as a player and from the third year as an ambassador in Miami, he would be earning for what he generated as a player at Barça, but he wouldn’t be a resident, so he wouldn’t be paying tax in Spain or he would be paying less than residents, which could lead to a fraud case,” added Álvarez de Mon.

He continued: “The club and Messi have previous in this sense (with Messi’s last tax case) and in the case of a potential sentence, he could end up in prison and the club in dissolution, which is the punishment for companies in this case.”

In addition, Expansion also point out that clubs that exceed their salary limit can only ‘sign’ for 25 percent of the amount saved. That’s to say, if Barça sell a player for 40 million euros, they can only spend 10 million.

I can’t assure Messi stay at Barca – Laporta

Barcelona president Joan Laporta insists talks with Lionel Messi remain on track.

Messi is now a free agent with his previous Barca deal expiring on June 30.

Asked about the risk of losing Messi, Laporta said: “(We are) calm.”

He continued: “We are doing well. You have to fit it into the financial fair play. We want him to stay and he is excited to stay. I wish I could tell you that Leo is staying but I can’t say yet. We are in the process of finding the solution.”

Laporta added: “The return to the presidency has been tough but I am still just as encouraged.”

La Liga: Messi calls Laporta with Barca contract answer

Lionel Messi has assured Barcelona he is ready to sign a new contract.

Messi’s current deal will expire at the end of June and there have been doubts about his commitment to Barca with the midfielder away at the Copa America with Argentina.

However, Spanish reporter Miguel Rico says Messi has given a definitive ‘yes’ to president Joan Laporta that he will sign the renewal.

Barca have managed to fit the Argentine captain’s salary inside their budget and he will sign until 2023.

Messi has called Laporta directly to confirm that he is prepared to sign the new deal.

Copa America: Messi scores stunner against Chile

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi scored a stunning free kick as Argentina drew with Chile at the Copa America.

Messi curled home from the edge of the area towards the end of the first half of the Group A opener.

It was the Barcelona forward’s 73rd international goal.

But Eduardo Vargas headed in an equaliser after Arturo Vidal’s penalty had been saved.

Just before kick-off, Argentina legend Maradona was remembered with a dazzling light and effects display.

  • Argentina were never too dependent on me – Messi

Argentina were never too dependent on me – Messi

Lionel Messi says he doesn’t believe that Argentina have ever been overly dependent on his contributions as he said the team is currently “on the right track” ahead of the Copa America.

Messi has long been one of the best players in the world but, despite incredible success on the club level and on a personal level, international trophies have eluded him with Argentina.

He’ll have a chance to remedy that once again this summer at the Copa America but, after years of critiques saying that Argentina rely on Messi too much, the man himself says he doesn’t believe that has ever been the case.

“At no time did the national team depend on me,” Messi told Ole. “We always try to have a strong group. We always said that if we are not a strong team, winning and achieving our objectives would be difficult.

“I think we became strong as a group. Most of the players have been working together for a long time. We have already have played in a Copa America, so we have the experience that having played it gives you. We are still in training and I think we are on the right track.”

He added: “It’s special, everything that I play with the national team is always special, be it friendlies, qualifiers, Copas America, World Cup … I never imagined playing so many games. I didn’t even think about it. I just lived from day to day and tried to always be present and always give my best.”

When Messi speaks, you must listen – Pedri

Barcelona midfielder Pedri is eager to see Lionel Messi sign a new contract.

Pedri struck a good partnership with the Barca captain last season, which saw the youngster make Spain’s Euros squad this month.

He said, “I hope Messi is still at Barça, but it’s his decision. If it were my decision, yes.

“He has always given me advice, if the best player in the world tells you, you have to listen to him.”

On coach Ronald Koeman’s future, Pedri added: “I am grateful to Koeman for the minutes he has given me. His future has to be decided by the club, I don’t get involved there. The president has to decide it.”

La Liga: Lionel Messi agrees terms with Barcelona

Lionel Messi is happy with new contract terms offered by Barcelona.

Cadena COPE reports Messi has reached an agreement with Barcelona and only needs to put pen to paper to sign a new two-year deal at the Camp Nou.

Cadena COPE’s Miguel Rico reports only the finest of details are to be settled and the Barcelona captain will renew his contract at the club.

Having tried his utmost to leave the Camp Nou at the beginning of the 2020/21 season due to his relationship with then-president Josep Maria Bartomeu, Messi now appears to have found happiness since Joan Laporta’s arrival as president.

The club’s signing of Sergio Aguero, a close friend and international teammate of Messi’s, has also helped him to finalise his decision.

Messi to miss Barca’s final match of La Liga season

Lionel Messi will sit out FC Barcelona’s final match of the 2020/2021 La Liga season against Eibar on Saturday.

The club confirmed on Friday their captain has been granted permission to start his holidays early before he begins preparations for the Copa America with Argentina.

Midfielder Pedri will also skip the game at Ipurua after a hectic season, with Barca unable to finish any higher than third in the table.

Messi has played in all but two of Barca’s league games in 2020/2021, making 47 appearances in all competitions.

He leads the goalscoring charts in La Liga with 30, seven clear of nearest rival Gerard Moreno, meaning he is almost certain to win the Pichichi trophy for the eighth time in his career.

It is unclear whether Messi will play again for the Catalans where he broke the club’s appearance record with 778 matches.

He also broke the world record for most goals at one club with 672 goals this season.

The 33-year-old’s future at Camp Nou remains in doubt, with his contract expiring in June and no agreement yet reached on an extension.

Messi attempted to leave last year, with Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) said to be interested, but he was thwarted by former president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

The return of Joan Laporta, who has a good relationship with Messi, as Bartomeu’s successor this year could play a part in the player’s decision over his future.

Laporta is reported to have sanctioned a 10-year contract offer for the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Barca have also been tipped to sign Messi’s Argentina team-mate Sergio Aguero on a free transfer after he leaves Manchester City.

I dream of playing with Argentina star at Barca – Gotze

World Cup winner Mario Gotze has revealed his dream to play alongside Lionel Messi at Barcelona while talking up his chances of earning a recall to the Germany national team.

The 28-year-old says Camp Nou would be his first choice next destination, having long been an admirer of Barca’s style of play and their club captain Messi.

“To celebrate possession football with this [Barca] team, alongside Lionel Messi, that would be a dream,” Gotze told 11Freunde. “I want to play the Champions League again.”

Gotze did, however, go on to insist that he is ready to sit down with PSV to discuss extending his contract beyond 2022, with the only stipulation being that head coach Roger Schmidt remains at the club alongside him.

“If Roger wanted to leave, I would worry,” he said. “We have agreed with PSV that we will sit down on an extraordinary offer.”
