  • HORRIFIC: Human tragedy, as 46 migrants found dead in Texas (PHOTOS)

The bodies of at least 46 people believed to be migrants who crossed into the United States from Mexico were found dead on Monday in and around a tractor-trailer that had been abandoned on the outskirts of San Antonio.

12 adults and 4 children were taken to local hospitals with heat-related injuries.

The survivors were “hot to the touch” and suffering from heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

San Antonio, which is 250km (150 miles) from the US-Mexican border, is a major transit route for people smugglers.

Human traffickers often use lorries to transport undocumented migrants after meeting them in remote areas once they have managed to cross into the United States.

“They had families…and were likely trying to find a better life,” San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said. “It’s nothing short of a horrific, human tragedy.”

Texas emergency responders initially arrived at the scene at about 18:00 local time (23:00 GMT) after responding to reports of a dead body, San Antonio fire chief Charles Hood told reporters.

“We’re not supposed to open up a truck and see stacks of bodies in there. None of us come to work imagining that,” he said.

He added that the vehicle, which had been abandoned by its driver, had no working air conditioning and there was no drinking water inside it.

Mexico’s Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, said that two Guatemalans were among those taken to hospital. The nationalities of the other victims was not immediately clear.

Three people are being held in custody and the investigation has been handed over to federal agents.

Law enforcement vehicles and some police tape have cordoned off a dark road.

Texas Governor Greg blamed the deaths on President Joe Biden.

Temperatures in San Antonio, which is about 160 miles (250 km) from the Mexican border, swelled to a high of 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39.4 degrees Celsius) on Monday with high humidity.

The city’s Police Chief William McManus said a person who works in a nearby building heard a cry for help and came out to investigate. The worker found the trailer doors partially opened and looked inside and found a number of dead bodies.

McManus said this was the largest incident of its kind in the city and said three people were in custody following the incident, though their involvement is not yet clear.

A spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said that its Homeland Security Investigations division was investigating “an alleged human smuggling event” in coordination with local police.

    Record Crossings

The deaths once again highlight the challenge of controlling migrant crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border, which have reached record highs.

The issue has proven difficult for U.S. President Joe Biden, a Democrat who came into office in January 2021 pledging to reverse some of the hardline immigration policies of his Republican predecessor Donald Trump. Republicans have criticized Biden’s border strategy ahead of the midterm congressional elections in November.

Mexico’s Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard called the suffocation of the migrants in the truck the “tragedy in Texas” on Twitter and said consular officials would go to the hospitals where victims had been taken to help “however possible.”

A spokesman for the Honduran foreign ministry told Reuters the country’s consulates in Houston and Dallas would be investigating the incident. Ebrard said two Guatemalans were hospitalized and Guatemala’s foreign ministry said on Twitter that consular officials were going to the hospital “to verify if there are two Guatemalan minors there and what condition they are in.”

The I-35 highway near where the truck was found runs through San Antonio from the Mexican border and is a popular smuggling corridor because of the large volume of truck traffic, according to Jack Staton, a former senior official with ICE’s investigative unit who retired in December.

Staton said migrants have regularly been intercepted in the area since the 2017 incident.

“It was only a matter of time before a tragedy like this was going to happen again,” he said.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls that in July 2017, 10 migrants died after being transported in a tractor-trailer that was discovered by San Antonio police in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

The driver, James Matthew Bradley, Jr., was sentenced the following year to life in prison for his role in the smuggling operation.

  • Drugs tunnel discovered between Mexico and US

Drugs tunnel discovered between Mexico and US

US officials have discovered an underground tunnel about the length of five football pitches used to smuggle drugs from Mexico to a warehouse in California.

It is not known how long the secret passage, which has a railway track, ventilation systems, electricity and reinforced walls, had been operating.

Investigators found the tunnel after staking out a home used to stash drugs in the Mexican border city of Tijuana and stopping vehicles near the warehouse in Otay Mesa, south of San Diego.

The warehouse was on a street that was busy during the day but quiet at night, with armed guards watching over a small shaft with a ladder that descended into the tunnel.

The opening of the passage was found in a warehouse in California.

Agents raided the warehouse and found no drugs there but a tunnel opening carved into the cement floor.

The passage, discovered last week, ran a third of a mile (532m) to Tijuana and was 4ft (1.2m) wide.

The opening of the passage was found in a warehouse in California.

“There is no more light at the end of this narco-tunnel,” said Randy Grossman, a prosecutor for the Southern District of California.

“We will take down every subterranean smuggling route we find to keep illicit drugs from reaching our streets and destroying our families and communities.”

The passage was discovered in an area where more than a dozen other sophisticated tunnels have been found in the past two decades.

The authorities did not link the latest tunnel to any specific cartel.

Recall that sometime 2020, US officials discovered the longest smuggling tunnel ever found on the border with Mexico.

Stretching for 4,309ft (1,313m), the tunnel had a lift, rail track, drainage and air ventilation systems, and high voltage electrical cables.

The passageway connected an industrial site in the Mexican city of Tijuana to the San Diego area in California.

There were no arrests made or drugs found. Authorities did not say who they suspected of being behind the tunnel.

But Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, described by the US government as one of the largest drug-trafficking organisations in the world, operates in the area.

Its founder and long-time leader, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, is serving life in prison in the US.

Lawyer commits suicide moments after killing client in court

A lawyer shot his client to death in a courtroom in northern Mexico Wednesday, then fled into an adjoining chamber and killed himself with a gunshot to the head.

Prosecutors in the northern state of Sonora initially said the two were both lawyers, and were related.

Later specified that the first victim, 27, was a nephew of the shooter, 65, as well as being his client.

The state prosecutors office ascribed the killing to a family legal matter, and said the two apparently had an argument. The court apparently did not have metal detectors in place.

Family courts in Mexico handle cases like custody, divorce and alimony.

Ezenwa ruled out of Nigeria, Mexico friendly match

Ikechukwu Ezenwa is out of Nigeria’s international friendly against Mexico due to injury.

Ezenwa got injured in training on Monday and won’t recover in time for the game billed to hold on Sunday morning at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The Heartland shot stopper will not make the trip to the United States of America for the highly anticipated game due to the setback.

Enyimba’s John Noble and Valentine NwabilI of Lobi Stars are the two other goalkeepers in the team’s camp.

Eguaveon drops 2 players for Super Eagles, Mexico friendly

Two Super Eagles players have been dropped from the 25-man list invited for the international friendly against Mexico, Super Eagles Media Officer, Femi Raji, has said.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had invited 25 home-based Super Eagles players to camp ahead of the game scheduled for July 3.

Raji told NAN that the players dropped were Christopher Nwaeze of Kwara United FC and Ifeanyi Anaemena of Rivers United.

Raji said the team had intensified preparations for the encounter and was at the U.S. Embassy on Friday to keep a visa appointment for the trip.

“We had a visa appointment today (Friday) at the U.S. Embassy, because of that, we didn’t train this morning.

“We will be training this evening at the Aguiyi Ironsi Barracks.

“For now, two players Christopher Nwaeze and Ifeanyi Anaemena have been dropped.

“Not everybody will make the final list, and the only reason a coach can drop a player could be that he didn’t meet up with standard.

“In fact, they were not dropped for injuries, not indiscipline, obviously it’s what the coach wants going by his strategy,” Raji said.

The Super Eagles are expected to depart for U.S. on June 30 for the encounter.

It would be recalled that NFF Technical Director, Austin Eguavoen was mandated by the football house to take charge of the game instead of Super Eagles handler Gernot Rohr.
