  • Current leadership lacks capacity to address Nigeria’s challenges – Prof. Anya

Current leadership lacks capacity to address Nigeria’s challenges – Prof. Anya

Professor Anya O. Anya has said the problems facing Nigeria are multi-dimensional and require decisive leaders, who must share a common code of values to salvage the situation.

Prof Anya, who was the speaker at the 21st Mike Okonkwo annual lecture, which was held on Thursday in Lagos State, said that the system through which leaders emerge must apply a strict set of criteria based on merit and excellence.

“It can be said that the crying need of Nigeria is clearly to find those who can build a new Nigeria on a new foundation. Needless to emphasize such a leader commands the trust and loyalty of the followers,” said Anya.

Quoting the late Albert Einstein, he said” “you cannot expect those who created a problem to have the capacity to solve the problem. That is the central dilemma that faces us as a people presently”.

He said further, “the system is corrupted from the grassroots to the apex of the Leadership as demonstrated by events and the outcome of the party congress of both parties (the ruling All Progressive Congress and main opposition Peoples Democratic Party)”.

The speaker suggested the establishment of normative values that drive social change in each major component of the geopolitical zones in the country.

Speaking on the deteriorating state of security in the country, Anya said the first step towards a solution is to recall and mobile all retired military and paramilitary personnel, who have a reservoir of experience, expertise and patriotism that cannot be ignored.

Bishop Mike Okonkwo, his wife peace, Commodore Ebitu Ukiye and the Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Religion and Chieftancy and Local Government, Prince Bayo Osiyemi, as they cut the cake during the 21st Annual Lecture held on Thursday in Lagos State.

The second step he said, is to create an environment for enduring social and politic harmony and the easiest path to this according to the Professor, is to implement aspects of the 2014 National Conference that have constitutional and long term policy impact.

He added that there was also a need to develop a strategic plan that aims to create a new environment for the selection, training and development of a leadership elite, with emphasis on teaching the youths who have the greatest potential for adaptation.

Anya also stressed that a system of incentives, rewards and punishment conducive to the promotion of good behaviour in the economy must be in place.

“Despite the cloud of despondency, evil and hopelessness, a new Nigeria is rising in the horizon. It will be driven by a new crop of exceptional youths, gifted in their creative talents and committed to the pursuit of merit and excellence within the framework of a new national code of values of truth, justice, equity and righteousness, ” he concluded.

Earlier, the Chairman of the event Commodore Ebitu Ukiye, noted that never in the history of the country did things get so bad.

“I cannot think of anytime or period this country Nigeria has ever faced the level of challenges, such as intolerance, hate and division among ethnic groups, compounded by various level of insecurity and extreme poverty,” Ukiye, a former Chief of General Staff said.

On his part, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Religion, Chieftaincy and Local Government Prince Bayo Osiyemi, commended religious institutions for constantly preaching the need for peaceful and harmonious coexistence.

Osiyemi who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the occasion, said the state government is irrevocably committed to offering responsible and responsive leadership as evident in the massive road infrastructural and other developmental projects.

“As stakeholders, we as government and you the governed must continue to show patriotism in playing our roles to build a nation of which we will all be proud,” the Governor said.

He added that Lagos State remained the safest and most secure in this country at the moment, as a result of the huge investment in security architecture.

Giving the vote of thanks, The Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) Bishop Mike Okonkwo, who used the event to mark his 77th birthday, expressed hope that things would get better.

“God has blessed this country with so much. I don’t think there’s any country any country in the world that is endowed as this nation. There is none. The only thing is that they were able to manage what they have,” Okonkwo said.

The highpoint of the event was the presentation of awards and gifts to winners of the 17th Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition and the cutting of cake.

Presentation of a trophy to the winner of the 17th Bishop Mike Okonkwo Essay Competition, Miss Ayeni Oluwanifemi Bright from the State Senior High School Ikeja, Lagos State.

  • 2023: Join political parties, getting PVC not enough – Bishop Okonkwo tells Christians

2023: Join political parties, getting PVC not enough – Bishop Okonkwo tells Christians

The Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Bishop Mike Okonkwo has charged Christians to join political parties, stressing that getting permanent voter’s card (PVC) is not enough.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Bishop Okonkwo gave the charge during a programme organised in continuation of the Building Leaders for Empowerment and National Transformation (BLENT) at TREM Headquarters in Lagos State.

Okonkwo especially advised Christians to join any of the existing political parties if they want to make a significant impact in the political leadership of the country.

He stressed that PVC is not enough, as electing leaders in a democratic dispensation does not start with registering to vote.

“In Nigeria, we don’t have room for independent candidates, that means political parties are the ones to put forward candidates for elections.

“The foundation for getting good people into political leadership positions is by joining the political parties. Whether by direct or indirect primaries or by consensus, it is the parties that will field candidates.

“So, if as Christians we are not part of the party structures, we will be left with making a choice out of two evils like our speaker just said.

“Me, I don’t want to make any choice from among two evils, I want to choose from good things. It is when candidates are put forward that the issue of using PVC to vote will come in”.

He continued: “I, therefore, charge you to go to your wards and be part of the process. Be a loud voice, don’t be lost in the crowd. Be engaged and involved. It is like we don’t understand how powerful the government is. The government can kill you if they choose to or put you in jail. Unfortunately, some are reluctant to be part of the process. We bury our heads inside the church and are not engaged.

“If you sit down and you are left with making a choice out of two evils, do you expect the evil you have chosen to do things that will favour you? It is wishful thinking to believe that by crying on social media things would change”.

Okonkwo, however, charged Christians to display integrity, commitment and excellence wherever they find themselves.

On why some Christians get it wrong going into politics, Okonkwo disclosed that some would want to start from the top, instead of learning the ropes and moving up.

“Some want to become the big guys overnight. They want to start from the big positions. If you really want to serve, why don’t you start from the basics and climb up the ladder of success. If you are a local government chairman and you are determined to make the difference in your corner, that is enough. You will be sending positive messages that would resonate beyond your imagination,” Bishop Okonkwo said.

Meanwhile, the guest speaker, Mr Sam Kputu, who addressed the occasion on “Becoming a game changer in Nigeria politics,” stressed that there was no doubt that Christians should be involved in politics.

Kputu, who was a former National Youth Leader of the defunct Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in the second republic and now a missionary, observed that the family, the church and the government were units set up by God to run things on Earth.

He explained that the enemy of God is constantly attacking the three and that Christians should not just fold their arms and watch things deteriorate.

Kputu warned that politics is more than a game because the consequences affect more people.

“I must sound a note of warning that there are limitations to politics. It can ensure social righteousness and not the righteousness of God. There is also not enough space for everybody to occupy one seat or the other. With a population of over 200 million, we have barely 15,000 elective positions in Nigeria from councillor to the President.

“Nigerian Christians are significant in number for them to cause great change to happen in the country but they don’t speak with one voice.

“In 1983, I was with my uncle in a political party that went round the country before the general elections. When we got to the East, the Christians there said God told them Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe would be president.

“In the West, the Christians there said God told them it would be Chief Obafemi Awolowo, in the North, they mentioned Prof. Ishaya Audu, was it that the people heard from different Gods,” Kputu said.

He disclosed that Christians should be involved in choosing the nation’s leaders because if the wicked are in power and Christians are hoping for anything good, it would amount to hoping against hope.

He urges Christians not play politics like unbelievers who would promise heaven and give the people hell, but that they must make positive changes in the polity.

  • At 40, how TREM is growing in leaps and bounds

At 40, how TREM is growing in leaps and bounds

The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) has clocked 40 years in existence and the ministry is set to mark it’s 32nd annual convention.

The TREM had announced date for its 32nd annual convention and part of the highlights of the convention will be activities to mark the ministry’s 40 years anniversary.

Recall that the TREM was officially launched on the 4th of January 1981 and the church started growing with a few members at 14, Afolabi Brown Street, Akoka, Lagos.

With close to 200 branches across the globe, from a very humble beginning, the church grew in leaps and bounds.

    ABRIDGED HISTORY OF TREM

The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) was officially launched on the 4th of January 1981. The church started with a few members at 14, Afolabi Brown Street, Akoka, Lagos. From a very humble beginning some fathers and friends encouraged us like the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa of blessed memory, Late Dr. Odunaike, Dr. Boyejo of the Foursquare Church who later became the 1st President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Dr. Bisi Orebayo also of the Foursquare Church, Dr. O. Ezekiel, late Bishop Harford Iloputaife, Late Bishop N. E. Moses, Dr. Jerry Wolcson from USA, Pastor E. A. Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Dr. Sam Ukaegbu and Bishop Sam Fadeyi. These men stood by us and believed in us when we had no form or comeliness that men should desire us. We also appreciate the contribution of Rev. Dr. Mac Nwulu the founder of Trinity College of Ministerial Arts who later became a Senator before passing on to glory. Also note worthy is the contribution of Late Rev. Dr. Iloh who was a member of the Board of Advisers of TREM and who is now the Presiding Steward of Soul Winning Ministries in Lagos and Rev. (Mrs.) Edith Iloh.

From this humble beginning, God by His grace took us step by step and the Church began to grow in leaps and bounds. In 1988, Dr. Mike Okonkwo, was consecrated the Bishop of the ministry by a team from National Christian Fellowship Conference (NCFC), in Philadelphia, USA led by Bishop James McNeal Jr.

We look back today and remember the times when the ministry could not afford to buy a plot of land that was selling for as little as N5,000.00 but see what the Lord has done. When the church in Akoka was completed we thought we have achieved a feat Napoleon could not dare, within a few years, we began to hold two services and the need to relocate stared us in the face. The first land we possessed was just across the road which did not work out. Then the Lord gave us an opportunity to buy over this place. Everyone that came here wandered what we were doing in a marshy land. It was so bad that no one could step in. The Presiding Bishop will stand on the road and point into this place. No one wanted to touch this place with a 10-foot pole. But inch by inch, trip after trip of sand, we made a road into this place and held a land possessing service under a canopy with sawdust as the red carpet.

When the current building was put up, it was so massive that we were like a drop of water in a bucket. Twice we had tornadoes that blew the better part of the roof off, damaging cars and equipment and some people were wounded, but to the glory of God, no life was lost. The roof was not only replaced, the ceiling and flooring were completed and then we could shout Ebenezer “thus far the Lord has helped us”.

In November 2003, the Lord spoke to the heart of His servant to put up another structure and the project “Cathedral of His Glory” was born. So far over N300 million has been spent from the drawing stage through the approval stage to where we are now. We thank God for His divine provision.

It has not all been about the Headquarters, as the Lord was taking us step by step at the Headquarters; the same anointing was flowing in the branches. Today, we have lands of our own across the nation, most of our branches are no more tenants in rented halls, cinema houses and restaurants, but we have our own buildings. Even outside the country, many of our branches are worshipping in their own facilities.

What started as a mustard seed as grown to over 200 branches with a staff strength of more than 240 people.

In achieving this feat, the Lord has surrounded us with faithful men and women who see a need and promptly fill it. It was the need for newsletter that will tell the world about the great things happening in this ministry that gave birth to the Word Ambassadors. These are professionals who took it upon themselves to develop the newsletter that grew into the Power in the Word Magazine. From production of the magazine, The Word Ambassadors teamed up with the Young Men Christian Fellowship and began city-wide crusades popularly called the Power Crusades. These crusades gave birth to several churches.

Apart from The Word Ambassadors, which I mentioned earlier the Young Men and the Young Women put in all it took to make the Ministry grow in leaps and bounds. In addition to the crusades, the Young Women organized breakfast outreaches which were very successful at a time when such were not popular. We also recognize the input of the choir in the growth of the ministry. The evergreen Evangel Voices have remained ever green and ever fresh. Many joined the church in order to always partake in the praise and worship led by this anointed choir.

From a few ministering arms, the ushers, the greeters, counselors and The Word Ambassadors, today we have other ministering arms reaching out to the world with the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. In these 40 years, the Lord has enabled us to make a formidable impact in several areas amongst which are:

    Power Crusades:

We have a team of young and dynamic men and women who take cities by storm for Jesus. The power crusades gave birth to a number of our branches and assists in strengthening others. Branches that have benefited directly from these crusades include: Osogbo, Ilaro, Akure, Abeokuta, Ede, Ogbunike, Asaba, Owerri, Aba branches to name a few. We believe that the primary need of humanity is Jesus and therefore we take these crusades beyond a specific location to street evangelism, house to house evangelism, sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ to every man and every woman in those areas. We know that any life that comes in contact with Jesus never remains the same. In each of the crusades, the Lord confirms His words with signs and wonders following.

    Television Evangelism:

There are some people who will not come to church or any religious function when invited, but who you can reach in the comfort of their homes through the television. The Power in the Word television broadcast which is currently being aired in Lagos, Ogun, and Delta States in Nigeria also on different satellite stations, and in the United Kingdom this has been a tool that the Lord has used to reach these people through us.

    African Mission:

The ministry is mindful of the leadership position of Nigeria in the continent of Africa and has begun leadership training for Church leaders in the continent. Thus far, we have been able to go to Cote D’Ivoire, Niger Republic, Liberia, Gabon, Sierra Leone and Bukina Faso.

    Communion of Covenant Ministers International:

This is an avenue through which we provide covering to young and upcoming ministers. CCMI gives an opportunity for fellowship and networking amongst ministers; we also provide covering, mentoring, impartation, strengthening and releasing their God-given potentials.

    We Care Kitchen:

We identify specific locations where we give free medical check-up, clothes and food once in two months while we share the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with them. Like the saying goes, people do not care how much you know, until they know how much you care. When we show them the love of Jesus by meeting a physical need, they also respond by giving their lives to Christ.

    We Care Ministry:

The We Care Ministry reaches out to members and non-members alike with counseling, interest free loans for small scale businesses, free medical attention and food supply for less privileged members and non members at festive periods. Members who God have blessed financially also give out scholarship to indigent students through the We Care Ministry.

As at today, many people have enjoyed either full scholarship or one time donation towards their educational advancement.

    Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture:

    Mike Okonkwo Essay Competition:

In a bid to further motivate our youths to excellence in their academics, the Mike Okonkwo Essay Competition was born in 2004. All Senior Secondary School students across the nation are eligible to participate. The winner for the maiden edition was from Lagos, while the winner of the 2019 edition was equally from state. The competition is currently going on nationwide and we look forward to presenting the winners and their schools with their prizes at the next annual lecture. The winner of the 2005 edition being a special edition to mark the 60th birthday of the Presiding Bishop also got a scholarship for his tertiary education in addition to the cash prize for the 1st prize position.

    Mike Okonkwo Football Competition:

This is a football competition to reach out to the youths in their locality and draw in as many youths as possible into their team. This will serve three purposes:

    1. Throughout the period of the tournament, youths in the various suburbs of Lagos, irrespective of tribe, tongue, religion or race come together in unity and one accord thereby fostering unity in the nation.
    2. The youths who are not members of the church are brought into the church in a bid to assure them of a bright future and a hope to look forward to.
    3. The tournament also provides exposure to the youths who are skilled in football but have no opportunity to play in any club. Some club managers visit the venue of the tournament and identify those who could be encouraged further in the game of football.

    Empowerment for less privilege:

This is a non-profit organization which is committed to lending a helping hand to the less privileged. The activities of the Mike Okonkwo Foundation include:

    • Running of vocational schools free of charge to youths in remote areas to give them the opportunity to acquire skills for survival, development and participation in community life. Currently there are two of such centers in Lagos (Agege and Mushin). Graduates of the vocational centres are also assisted where feasible to establish small scale businesses in a bid to make them responsible citizens of this great country thereby reducing the menace of “Area Boys” and other youthful delinquencies.
    • Running adult literacy classes and free WAEC/JAMB/NECO preparatory classes. Proven teachers are employed to teach core subjects including Mathematics, English language, English Literature, Government and Economics to these students free of charge.
    • Award of Scholarships to students in tertiary institutions throughout the beneficiary’s course of study. The Foundation has 14 students currently on her scholarship scheme.
    • One-time assistance to institutions like the old people’s home, and handicapped children’s home

Donation of medical equipment to government hospitals: the first in the series was the donation of 10 wheelchairs each to 4 institutions: National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and General Hospital Lagos.

    Prison Ministry:

We carry out prison evangelism in all the prisons and remand homes in Lagos, not just by ministering to them spiritually, but also assisting in other areas, including legal assistance to inmates who cannot afford it. We join hands with the government to provide some basic things and assist in integrating them back into the society when they are released.

    Jesus in the Community:

All our programs outlined above are some of the things we do to be the extension of Jesus in our world. Jesus said we are the light of the world and the salt of the earth. We take the light of the word to our world through these community centered programs and street crusades. We also reach out to HIV positive victims by giving them hope medical assistance as the Lord enables us.

    Rural Evangelism:

The Ministry is aware of the challenges of Pastors in rural areas and as such reaches out to them on monthly basis by paying monthly allowances, giving assistance for the purchase of land for their ministries, organizing all-expense paid training programs; this is in addition to various one-time donations, and other necessities as the Lord enables us. Recently, the ministry donated 30 motorcycles to ministers in rural areas.

In addition to all these, the ministry also makes it a point of duty to make her presence felt in her immediate locality with amenities like street light which was done in Ejigbo, provision of boreholes and other programs that will be a blessing to the immediate environment where the branches are located.

  • Coronavirus: Bishop Okonkwo speaks on God destroying the world with virus

Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Dr. Mike Okonkwo has said “CoronaVirus will come and go and we will still be here because God didn’t tell us that he will destroy the world with the virus”.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Bishop Okonkwo stated this on Sunday while preaching on the message title: the first thing first, stressing that “there is an answer to every infirmity and disease that is plaguing the earth.

“The Blood of Jesus was shed once and for all, for our eternal redemption! We are saved by His blood”.

Similarly, the General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye had on Saturday night prayed against any spread of the novel Coronavirus disease.

Adeboye offered the prayers in a live broadcast on Saturday night while making an address that marked the end of the church’s 50-day fasting and prayers which had started on January 11, 2020.

“There is no virus that is going to come near you at all because it is written that they that dwell under the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

“I believe that this is a time to show that there is a difference between those who serve Him (God) wholeheartedly and those who do not. It shall be well with you and you will enjoy peace and you will have good health,” Pastor Adeboye said.

Nigeria recorded its first confirmed index case of COVID-19 on Friday with an Italian traveller who arrived in Lagos on Monday night from Milan, Italy.

The novel virus, which was first confirmed in Wuhan, China, is fast-spreading in over 25 countries across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Americas and Africa.

  • Amazing 16-year-old wins 2019 Mike Okonkwo national essay competition overall prize

A 16-year-old Master Esigbone Omagbemi Ferdinard of Roshallom International Secondary School, Egbeda, Lagos who came third in the Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition for Secondary School students in Nigeria last year (2018), has emerged the overall winner in the 2019 edition of the competition having scored a total average of 68%.
TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports the second position went to Oluwaseun Esther Aremu of Shepherd International College Ado-Ekiti with an average score of 61%, while Adeola Ademuwa Ifeola from Chrisfield College, Itamaga, Ikorodu came third with a total average score of 60%.
However, the fourth position was a tie, with West Tamunonye also of Christfield College, Itamaga, Ikorodu, and Anazia Rita from Roshallom International School accruing a total average score of 56%.
Ajayi Ibukun of Fit-Charis International School and Olaitan Olajuwon of Chrisfield College, Itamaga both took the fifth position respectively in the competition with an average score of 54%.
While announcing the 2019 results of the competition, the Chief Examiner, Professor Akachi Ezeigbo disclosed that a total of six hundred and twelve (612) essay entries were sent in for assessment, representing a drop of about 28% when compared to the eight hundred and forty-eight (848) that were received and assessed last year.
According to Ezeigbo, the drop does not indicate any waning of enthusiasm for the competition.
“On the contrary, feedback from teachers and students indicates that some schools in Lagos are now adopting the winning entries of this competition as models in their teaching of writing and rhetoric.
“As we understand it, the drop arises in part from new management strategies introduced by the organisers to ensure that only credible entries are sent in for assessment.
“Based on the positive feedback and to further the institutionalization of the Bishop Mike Okonkwo Lecture Series, we urge the organisers to put the winning entries in a book form, as had been done to the adult version of lectures, in order to make the materials more portable and accessible to teachers and students.
“Such a compilation will build capacity and prepare students for a more viable participation in future competitions. More importantly, it will be a unique addition to curriculum materials. We assure you that our winning essays are original materials from gifted students that can function adequately as teaching materials,” the examiner explained.
Speaking further, the examiner postulated that the teaching of responsible internet usage in secondary school curriculum has become very paramount and of necessity.
“The fact that almost any material is available and accessible via a click makes a compelling case for us to introduce the teaching of responsible Internet usage in the secondary school curriculum.
“We recommend a review and expansion of the syllabus of a subject like civic education to include teaching students to understand that plagiarism violates Intellectual Property (IP) rights, and that referencing the literatures they consult as they make their points is a key aspect of their academic development,” the examiner said
In the first round of the 2019 edition of the competition a total of 612 entries were received from Junior and Senior Secondary Schools across different states of the federation and the Topic was Justice as an Instrument of Enduring Peace in Nation building while the second round topic was Entrenching Tolerance as Solution to Nigeria’s Ethnic and Religious Crises.
For coming top in this year’s competition, Master Esigbone Omagbemi Ferdinard of Roshallom International Secondary School, Lagos will get a cheque of N100,000, a personal Laptop, a trophy, a plaque, while the school gets three sets of Computer and a printer.
Miss Oluwaseun Esther Aremu of Shepherd International College Ado-Ekiti who came second will go home with a cheque of N75,000, a plaque and the school will get two sets of computers and a printer.
For emerging the third position in this year’s competition, Master Adeola Ademuwa Ifeola from Chrisfield College, Itamaga, Ikorodu Lagos will go home with a cheque of N50,000, a plaque and the school gets a Computer set.
The other winners will get a consolation price of N20,000.
The prices for the winners of the 16th Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition for Secondary Schools in the country will be presented at this year’s Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture, at the Shell Hall Muson Center, Onikan, Lagos, on Thursday September 5, 2019.
The theme for this year’s lecture is “Justice as an Instrument of Enduring Peace in Nation Building”.
The Lecture will be chaired by Chief Folake Solanke (SAN) while the lecture will be delivered by Barrister Femi Falana (SAN).
Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition was initiated in the year 2004, as part of activities to celebrate the Birthday of the Presiding Bishop of TREM, Dr. Mike Okonkwo (MFR) and more importantly to contribute to the development of the Educational Sector.
Dr. Mike Okonkwo, has continued in this gesture for 16 years, using his God given talent, strength and resources to be a blessing to the younger generation in the pursuit of academic excellence by encouraging them to cultivate the habit of reading and writing effectively.
This man of God, who believes in absolute development of mankind in all facet of life, has used the institutionalization of Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition to achieve this dream and desire.
The essay competition program has helped some students that participated in the program to develop more interest in research work, reading extensively and writing constructively.
Apart from serving as a tool to encourage reading and writing, the competition has also given the students the opportunity to bare their minds on topical issues that are of significant importance to the social-economic development of our nation.
The essay competition has also contributed towards ICT development in the secondary schools especially in government owned schools.
Winners have emerged from both governments owned schools and private schools and they have always been encouraged with gifts both in kind and cash.
The Chief Sponsor and visionary of the program, Dr. Mike Okonkwo, is confident of the fact that Nigerian youths can compete favourably with their counterparts in developed nations.
