Why working with Arteta special for me – Luiz

Arsenal defender David Luiz says he has come as close as he will get to fulfilling his dream of working with Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola’s long-time assistant Mikel Arteta took over the Gunners helm halfway through this season, and Luiz has relished learning from the former Manchester City assistant.

“I am grateful because I made another dream come true. Not in a concrete way, but in a different way. I always had the dream of working with [Pep] Guardiola,” Luiz told ESPN Brasil.

“I couldn’t work with him, but I’m having the opportunity to work with a person who grew up and learned and was victorious with him, who has the same ideas. So, in a way, I’m making a dream come true.”

  • COVID-19: I miss hugging people I love – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has come out after recovering from coronavirus that he misses hugging people.

Arteta, 38, tested positive for the virus on 12 March but has since recovered after self-isolating.

The Spaniard said, people should be “emotionally more open” after the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are in a world here where everything is social media, everything is a WhatsApp text.”

“But how important is touching each other, feeling each other and hugging each other?

“I miss that with a lot of the people I love.

“We have to be emotionally more open. We have to tell each other what we are feeling.”

Arteta reported feeling unwell after it was confirmed Evangelos Marinakis – the owner of Greek side Olympiakos, who played Arsenal in the Europa League in February – had coronavirus on 10 March.

On Thursday Arteta said he was feeling “completely recovered” and urged people to follow the government’s advice on staying at home.

“It’s one virus that is putting the world aside and it’s transforming everything that we prioritise in life. So we have to take that lesson,” he told the Arsenal website.

“We cannot just in two or three months’ time – if we are able to get over this quickly – forget about this, because it’s so important.”

  • Arsenal coach, Arteta sends message to Premier League from Isolation centre

Mikel Arteta says he is “feeling better already” a day after Arsenal announced their head coach had tested positive for coronavirus.

Arteta, the first-team squad and coaching staff have been self-isolating in line with government health guidelines.

Following the news that Arteta and Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi had tested positive the virus, the Premier League and EFL have postponed all fixtures until the weekend of April 4.

Arteta tweeted in support of the news on Friday afternoon.

He said, “Thanks for your words and support. Feeling better already. We’re all facing a huge and unprecedented challenge. Everyone’s health is all that matters right now.

“Protect each other by following the guidelines and we’ll come through this together. Well done PL (Premier League) for making the right decisions.”

  • Arsenal youngster showed they were worth the risk – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said the club’s young players are “worth the risk” after his youthful team beat League One Portsmouth at a noisy Fratton Park to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Arteta named a side with six players aged 20 or under and they looked in control, especially in the second half, as they beat a team which had not lost in 19 home games and had won their previous 10.

Pompey played well in the first half but trailed to Sokratis Papastathopoulos’ volley from Reiss Nelson’s cross just before the break.

Eddie Nketiah bundled home from close range from another Nelson cross to wrap up the victory six minutes after the restart.

Pompey’s only shot on target came in the second half, with substitute Ronan Curtis’ effort saved.

“I’m really pleased with them,” Arteta told BBC Sport. “I’m enjoying working with the players. They deserve a chance. It’s always a risk but they’re worth the risk.

“It was a great atmosphere and Portsmouth made it difficult. We knew we’d have moments we could suffer but we reacted and got control of the game. We got two goals and could have had a few more.”

  • Arteta told to sell nine Arsenal players

Former Arsenal player, Perry Groves, has told Mikel Arteta to get rid of up to nine players this summer.

This follows the Gunners’ shocking exit from the Europa League in the round of 32.

Arsenal won 1-0 at Olympiacos and were favourites to qualify, but lost 2-1 to the Greek side in the reverse fixture.

Arteta is expected to make major changes to his squad ahead of his first full season in charge.

Groves admits it won’t be easy to get rid of almost an entire lineup of players, but feels it would be the best decision.

“He needs to get rid of players. I thought it would be five or six, but I think you’re looking up to about nine players. [But] It is going to be impossible to get rid of them all in one go.

“This isn’t about talent, it’s not that they are not good players – David Luiz, (Shkrodan) Mustafi, Sokratis, (Dani) Ceballos is going to go anyway as he is on loan, Ozil, (Granit) Xhaka, (Calum) Chambers, (Mohamed) Elneny and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

“Mkhitaryan and Elneny are out on loan at this point anyway,” he told talkSPORT.

Arsenal are currently in ninth place in the Premier League, seven points off fourth-place Chelsea.

  • Why Arsenal couldn’t beat Burnley – Arteta

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has revealed why his side was unable to beat Burnley in the Premier League at Turf Moor on Sunday.

Arteta said the Gunners were ‘sloppy’ during the encounter against Sean Dyche’s side as the played 0-0 against the host.

Speaking after the game, Arteta was quoted by Football London as saying at his post-match: “I hope it doesn’t take much time. But we need more consistency with the ball.
“Arsenal were so sloppy, and we have to improve.”

“We started well and could have scored two. We played in Burnley’s half and controlled long balls.

“After 20 minutes, we conceded unnecessary set pieces.

“I was very disappointed with how we started the second half.”

“I didn’t water the pitch in training yesterday.”

Arsenal will clash with Newcastle United on February 16.

  • No Aubameyang sale, I want him here – Arteta

No Aubameyang sale, I want him here – Arteta

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta says he is not even considering the possibility of selling the club’s top goalscorer Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang in January.

Newspaper reports from Spain claim Real Madrid will make a player-plus-cash offer for the Gabon international worth up to £70m.

When asked about the chance of a January sale, Arteta said: “I don’t even think about that possibility with Auba, I want him here.”

  • Arteta claims first victory against Man Utd

Arteta claims first victory against Man Utd

Mikel Arteta earned his first win as Arsenal boss as the Gunners produced a powerful first-half performance to beat a lacklustre Manchester United.

The visitors, who were without the injured Paul Pogba, actually began brightly, but the game took a different turn on eight minutes when Nicolas Pepe steered in his fifth goal of the season after Sead Kolasinac’s cross was deflected to him.

That led to a first half in which the hosts were in control and Pepe hit the post before they doubled their lead when his corner was smashed in from close range by Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

Ole Gunnar Solskajer’s side came into the game with one loss in their previous nine games, and although they improved after the break, they rarely tested Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

It was characteristic of a stop-start season in which they are yet to win three Premier League games in a row.

The defeat leaves them fifth in the table, five points behind Chelsea, who drew with Brighton earlier in the day.

Victory for Arsenal ended a run of seven home games without a win in all competitions and lifted them to 10th place, four points behind United.

But they remain closer to the relegation zone than the top four.

  • Mourinho mocks Arsenal for appointing Arteta as manager

Mourinho mocks Arsenal for appointing Arteta as manager

Tottenham Hotspur manager, Jose Mourinho, has aimed a dig at club executives, who appoint managers with no experience, hours after Mikel Arteta was confirmed as Arsenal’s new boss.

Arteta has never managed before, spending the last three years as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City.

He has now signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the Gunners, to replace Unai Emery.

Mourinho, speaking to the media ahead of their Premier League clash against Chelsea, suggested Carlo Ancelotti should have got the job.

“The only point I can find – and it is for us to laugh a little bit – is that years ago the best managers were the guys with more victories and now the best is the guy with the fewest defeats.
“So Ancelotti has three Champions Leagues, won the league in Italy, France and England and won cups here and there – but Ancelotti has lost, I don’t know, 200 matches?
“I have lost 150-180 – Carlo is a little bit older than me.
“I think now it is not about how much you won, it is about the matches we didn’t lose. So probably the best managers now are the managers with zero defeats.
“The only reason I can understand is that they look through the CVs and see guys with more defeats and guys with less defeats, so guys with less defeats are given the job.

Emery reacts to Arteta’s appointment at Arsenal

Unai Emery says Arsenal are making “a good decision” by appointing Mikel Arteta to replace him as manager.

Emery, 48, was sacked last month after an 18-month spell in charge ended with a seven-game winless run.

Manchester City assistant boss Arteta was announced as the new Gunners boss on Friday.

“He really is prepared to make that next jump,” said Emery.

“He has been at Arsenal before, he’s been in the Premier League and he has been working with Pep Guardiola. I do believe this is a good decision and I would also like it to be a good decision.”
