Police, military foil bank robbery attempt in FCT

The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in a combined operation with the Nigerian Military has foiled a bank robbery attempt in Abaji Area Council of the FCT.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, SP Josephine Adeh said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

She said the Commissioner of Police in charge of the FCT, Mr Benneth Igweh led the operation that foiled the robbery attempt that happened on June 13.

Adeh said security forces had engaged the 15-man robbery gang in an intense gun duel after the robbers had attacked the bank with dynamite in an attempt to rob.

She said the gun duel forced the armed robbers to scamper to safety with various degrees of bullet wounds, while the security forces succeeded in apprehending three of the gang members.

The FCT police spokesperson said the suspects were arrested with various degrees of bullet injuries.

According to her, a yet-to-be-identified suspect was set ablaze by an irate mob at the scene after being neutralised by the security forces.

“A police operative and the gang leader, with bullet injuries were rushed to the hospital, but later confirmed dead by the doctor on duty, while others are still receiving treatment,” she said.

She said search operation was still ongoing to apprehend fleeing members of the gang with bullet injuries.

Adeh said the commissioner commended the effectiveness of the combined operation, and reaffirms the command’s commitment to continue to make FCT unsafe for criminals.

Air Force Chief, Abubakar hails Oborevwori over support to military, execution of M.O.R.E Agenda(Photos)

…as Oborevwori gifts Nigerian Airforce land

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, Wednesday, commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the support the Delta State Government has provided to the Air Force over the years and also on the robust execution of his M.O.R.E agenda in the state.

Abubakar who spoke during a courtesy visit to the governor at Government House Asaba, also hailed Governor Oborevwori for gifting the Air Force land land to fully entrench itself in the state.

He spoke as Governor Oborevwori handed over the Certificate of Occupancy of 66.6 hectares of land to the Air Force.

Air Marshal Abubakar who said he was in the state to oversight the operational responsibilities of the Air Force in Warri, said he could not but thank Governor Oborevwori for all the support and cooperation the Air Force had received from Delta State Government over the years.

Air Marshal Abubakar congratulated the Governor on his one year anniversary in office and for the implementation of his administration’s MORE Agenda as a beacon of hope and also a catalyst for the transformation of Delta State.

The Nigerian Air Force Chief also thanked the Governor for the presentation of Certificate of Occupancy, C of O for a parcel of land measuring 66.6 hectares for the Air Force barrack at Osubi in Okpe Local Government Area of the state and appealed for more land for the building of the Nigerian Air Force housing scheme in the state.

While welcoming the Air Force Chief to Delta State, Governor Oborevwori said: “to collaborate with the Nigerian Airforce, we have provided 66.6 hectares of land in Osubi, and the C of O was issued in January this year.

“We are all aware that it was initially granted by the previous administration but there was no C of O. It was supposed to be an operational base at that time. We know the project is still there; we will also assist in the construction of roads that will lead to the 66.6 hectares of land.

“The gesture is in line with our M.O.R.E agenda; to enhance peace and security in the state because that’s the only way we can get development. I want to tell you here that but for the sad Okuama 17 very sad incident, we were already enjoying peace in Delta State.

“We condemn the unfortunate incident in totality and we know that the Okuama 17 will not go in vain. We are also doing our best; we have already set up an IDP camp for the innocent citizens.

“I want to assure you that, regarding your request for land for your housing scheme, we will make sure that you get the land as soon as possible. Now that you have the spirit to build a housing scheme for your personnel, we have to get the land ready immediately.

“Again, we assure you that we will continue to partner the Nigerian Airforce and other security agencies in Delta State in order to continue to enjoy peace because that’s the only way sustainable development can be achieved in this state.”

Military confirms killing of five soldiers by IPOB in Abia

A statement by the Director Defence Media Operations, Edward Buba, said the attack took place at Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Areas adjourning Aba metropolis, where troops of Operation Udoka were deployed to enforce peace in the area and protect the citizens.

He said the terrorists who attacked the troops in the surprised attack came in three tinted Toyota Prado SUVs and others from built up areas surrounding the checkpoint.

The military also confirmed that six civilians were killed in the cross-fire that ensued between the terrorists and the troops.

According to Major General Buba, investigation are ongoing concerning the attack. The military also promised to retaliate the attack on its troops, vowing that their response would be brutal.

“Troops of OP UDO KA deployed at Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Areas adjourning Aba metropolis in Abia State were attacked and sadly killed by terrorist of IPOB/ ESN.

“The troops deployed to enforce peace in the area and protect the citizens were massed attacked by the terrorist. The terrorist in 3 tinted Prado Toyota SUVs and others from builtup areas surrounding the checkpoint, sprang a surprise attack on the checkpoint. The attack sadly took the lives of 5 personnel of the armed forces killed in action.

“The armed forces mourn the death of these troops as each, and every soldier lost in battle is a terrible loss. Meanwhile, investigation is ongoing concerning the attack.

“Overall, it must be reiterated that the lifeline of the terrorist is the people, and this situation is no exemption. Winning the war without the support of the people is close to impossible. The IPOB capitalised on this to perpetrate attacks on the troops. The situation leaves more to be desired.

“Accordingly, it is absolutely imperative that the military retaliate against this dastardly act against troops. The military would be fierce in its response. We would bring overwhelming military pressure on the group to ensure their total defeat,” the statement read.

Chad holds presidential election after 3 years of military rule

Chad holds presidential election on Monday meant to end three years of military administration and usher in democracy, but instead it appears likely to solidify the interim president’s grip on power.

General Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno who seized power in 2021, suspended the constitution, and was installed as the president of the Transitional Military Council is the favourite among the 10 candidates.

The 40-year-old became the central African nation’s leader when his father, who had repressively ruled Chad since 1990, died from wounds suffered on the front line as he visited troops in the north battling rebels.

The vast country of around 19 million people has never experienced a peaceful transfer of power since its independence from its former colonial power France in 1960.

Déby promised that his presidency was only a temporary placeholder until Chad had transitioned to a new democratic government.

But he has crushed opposition demonstrations, voters and observers alike doubt that the election will be fair.

NAN reports that the politics of Chad take place in a framework of a presidential republic, whereby the President of Chad is both head of state and head of government.

Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and parliament.

The president is elected for a five-year term by the people.

The National Assembly has 155 members, elected for a four-year term in 25 single-member constituencies and 34 multi-member constituencies.

BREAKING: Detained Delta monarch not released – Sources

Sources have disclosed that the Defence Headquarters is yet to free the traditional ruler of Ewu-Urhobo Kingdom in Delta State, His Royal Majesty, Clement Oghenerukevwe Ikolo, Urhukpe 1, who was detained by the military over the killing of soldiers around Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state.

The monarch was reported to have been released on Monday morning after spending over two weeks in military detention where he was interrogated on his alleged involvement in the killing of the military personnel.

However, sources have confirmed that the royal father was yet to be released.

“The wife of the monarch is not aware that they have released him. So, it cannot be true the monarch has been released,” one of the sources said.

Recall that the Delta monarch turned himself in after the Defence Headquarters declared him and seven others wanted over their alleged involvement in the gruesome killing of the military personnel of the 181 Amphibious Battalion in Bomadi by unknown gunmen.

He was immediately whisked away to Abuja after the State Commissioner of Police handed him over to the military in Asaba. The monarch since then had remained incommunicado at the Defence Headquarters.

Meanwhile, the Military Board of Inquiry constituted by the Defence Headquarters to investigate the 17 soldiers killed in Okuama Community, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta, has commenced sitting.

The panel convened last Wednesday at the Governor’s Office Annexe in Warri South Local Government Area of the state.

The Okuama Community was, however, not represented.

The Director-General, Political and Security Services in Delta, Mr David Tonwe, who ushered the Okoloba stakeholders into the meeting room, however, told newsmen they were not permitted to be part of the meeting.

Recall that the slain soldiers, made up of a Commanding Officer, two Majors, a Captain, and 13 others, were said to have been ambushed and murdered on March 14.

They were said to have been responding to the crisis between Okoloba and Okuama communities who had allegedly been engaged in an aged-long land dispute.

Military dismiss alleged shooting of civilians in Plateau by soldiers

Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), a special military task force maintaining peace in Plateau and environs, has dismissed the allegation that its soldiers shot innocent civilians in the recent attacks in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau.

Maj. Samson Zhakom, the Media Officer of the operation denied the allegation in a statement on Monday in Jos.

The Coalition of Bokkos Ethnic Youth Nationalities, alleged that soldiers shot civilians and compounded the vulnerability of residents of the locality.

The group, who called for the removal of the Commander of OPSH Step-Up Headquarters 2 in Bokkos, said that the security agencies failed to quell the recent killings in some communities of the council.

But the media officer described the allegation as unfounded and aimed at tarnishing the good image of the military and other security agencies in the state.

He also noted that the claim by the group that security agencies deployed to Bokkos had a confrontation with vigilantes was mischievous, insisting that the personnel were professional while repelling the attack.

”Security agencies were rather preoccupied with restoring normalcy during the confrontations between different ethnic groups on April 13, 2024.

”Kudos should be given to these troops who remained deployed without break for over 72 hours ensuring that the high grounds and other vulnerable communities were dominated in a bid to protect law abiding citizens.

”Also, the use of sophisticated weapons by the acclaimed vigilante was further buttressed by the discovery of eleven rounds of 7.62 mm (special) ammunition in the possession of the dead militia contrary to claims that he was a vigilante who was using dane gun to protect his community.

”Moreover, the acclaimed vigilante was already dead before the troops arrived the area, therefore, the allegation of killing of the vigilante is a calculated effort to feign weakness and exonerate the dead vigilante from his participation in the attacks and counter reprisals,”he said.

Zhakom further said that the call by the group for the removal of its set-up commander in Bokkos was malicious and aimed at dampening the morale of troops in carrying out their lawful duties.

”The call is not unconnected with the increased tempo of operations carried out by troops under the command of the senior officer which has denied criminal elements on both sides of the divide the freedom of action.

”The desperation of the petitioners may have been aggravated by the impartial stance of the commander during the attack which is already given a religious connotation to stir sentiment and instigate spill over to other parts of Plateau.

”It is of utmost importance to stress the risks associated with desperate attempts to galvanise negative public opinion against security agencies taking into account the risks it poses.

”Notwithstanding the deliberate efforts to cast aspersion on our personnel, security agencies will continue to take proactive steps to prevent breakdown of law and order in our joint operations area,” he said.

The media officer, however, called on residents of the state to support the military and other security agencies in their bid toward ensuring a peaceful Plateau

  • Okuama lives matter: Call your men to order, URS tells military authority

Okuama lives matter: Call your men to order, URS tells military authority

…insists no investigative panel has proven anything against our people

    …condemns murder of 17 soldiers

…says we can’t be silent while our people are being wiped out

The Urhobo Renaissance Society, URS, an umbrella body of Urhobo sons and daughters has said, the military authority should call their men to order saying we cannot continue to be silent in the face of the deliberate act to wipe Okuama off the face of the earth as embarked upon by the Nigerian Army.

This was contained in a statement signed by the group’s Secretary, Dr John Uwa stating that:

“The dastardly murder of seventeen officers and men of the Nigerian Army on the 14th of March 2024 was a condemnable act which riled all people of good will and conscience.

” The peace loving Urhobo people also condemned the barbaric act in the harshest of words. So far, the military has pointed accusing fingers at the people of Okuama as the culprits since the mutilated bodies of the soldiers were found floating on the Forcados River which run by Okuama.

“We dare say that this is an allegation which has not been proven by any investigative panel. While the Urhobo people commiserate with the families of the slain soldiers and offer her condolences to the Federal Government of Nigeria for which the military serves as a symbol of power, we cannot continue to be silent in the face of the deliberate act to wipe Okuama off the face of the earth as embarked upon by the Nigerian Army.

“The Urhobo people, after expressing their shock and condoling with the families of the murdered soldiers, the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian state, have again and again insisted on the innocence of the Okuama people of less than eight hundred living on a poor and isolated land.

“We have insisted that the kind of fire power that will eliminate that number of soldiers was lacking among the agrarian Okuama people. We have also insisted that the Urhobo people’s unalloyed loyalty to the Federal Government has made them to show an uncommon respect bordering on veneration to the military and never in the history of the Urhobo people have they hurt a soldier or taken up arms against the Nigerian state.

The group insisted: “What is happening at Okuama is a tragic instance of scapegoating intended to destroy an entire community by a military that abandoned the rules of engagement with citizens as enshrined in global best practices.

“The military has turned its arsenal against the citizens it should be protecting. Okuama has become victim of state violence.
The premise that the people of Okuama are victims of state malevolence is now glaring to all with the conflicting utterances coming from the peak of the military high command.

” The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has offered four different narratives on the Okuama incident. His first thread was that the soldiers were killed by youths of Okuama. The next line was that the military knows the killers of the soldiers and that they were closing in on them and he went on to mention one Amagbein from Igbomotoru in Bayelsa State.

” In another narrative he ascribed the killings to oil bunkering. His latest storyline is that Okuama people hired mercenaries to kill the soldiers. In one of his media outings, General Musa said Lt. Col. A. H. Ali the slain commander alone could have leveled all of Okuama if he had been armed.

“The same General Musa forgot that he had told the world that the killers of the soldiers made away with their arms which the military is now looking for in Okuama. Are these conflicting stories from just one man about one incident not enough pointers that the military should look elsewhere for the killers of the soldiers, the group wondered.

“As we write the military has leveled Okuama and authoritative media reports indicate that a church and a school are the only two buildings standing and reminding the world about a place that once was. The number of Okuama lives wasted by Nigerian soldiers since the 14th March incident is unspecified, but they are many.

” The entire Urhobo nation is mourning the annihilation of Okuama. The few surviving people now live in forests cohabiting with wild animals and reptiles. The military has blocked all access to Okuama and those trapped in the forest are dying of starvation. Besides Okuama, the military has also attacked nearby Urhobo communities in search of suspected innocent people.

“What became more disturbing was the declaration of eight citizens including a royal father and a professor as wanted persons. And the world wondered how legitimate is it for the military to declare citizens who are not its personnel wanted. The royal father who is the King of Ewu Kingdom of which Okuama is a constituent community has been held incommunicado by the military. This is a desecration of tradition and a gross violation of the Nigerian constitution.

“Unfortunately, the Chief of Defence Staff is holding onto the presidential directive, for the military to fish out the killers, to commit genocide in Okuama; even without cognizance of its discretionary power in a civilian environment. And with the evidence adduced to the Okuama incident in the media, we expect the initial hasty presidential response to have been rescinded; so as to prevent the Nigeria military, the largest force in Africa, from its further destruction of an infinitesimal settlement like Okuama.

“We use the medium to call for the immediate release of the King of Ewu kingdom in line with his fundamental human right.
The military has set up a panel of inquiry which is an attempt at covering up.

“The military cannot be a fair judge in its own case. Whatever that panel is doing should be confined to military and not public records. What the Federal Government should do is to set up an independent commission of inquiry to unravel what actually happened.

“Only then can we get to the bottom of the matter and get justice. Therefore, let us state very clearly that the Urhobo Nation will have no trust, or take part, in a panel of inquiry in which the Nigerian Army is both the judge, the prosecutor, the adjudicator and the executioner.

“The Okuama incident should not be seen an isolated misfortune and ascribed to a land dispute between two communities. In the fullness of time, its real instigation by resource theft in which the military is actively involved will be revealed.

“The military needs to give reorientation to its men in order for them to focus on real soldierly duties and being truly faithful to the nation. The military in the Niger Delta has a subterranean allegiance to resource theft in collusion with oil thieves.

“What an independent investigation can also do is to get mobile network providers to evaluate the conversations in the phones of the slain soldiers to know what went on in the days leading to their death.

“Those who reduced Okuama to rubbles and murdered her people should remember the story of Odi and Zaki Biam. The General who ordered the bombardment of Odi was still alive when another General leveled his home town of Zaki Biam.

“For now, we call on the Federal Government to call the military to order and let Okuama be rebuilt. Okuama lives matter.
