He lost power in January 2010 and went into exile abroad.

He returned to Guinea in December 2021 and was subsequently accused of violently suppressing the protests that took place in Conakry on Sept. 28, 2009, resulting in the deaths of more than 150 people and more than 1,000 injuries.

  • Echoes of 1966 coup as Late Brig Gen Ademulegun’s daughter hails Tinubu for approving N18bn for families of fallen heroes

Echoes of 1966 coup as Late Brig Gen Ademulegun’s daughter hails Tinubu for approving N18bn for families of fallen heroes

Precisely 57 years ago the army struck and took over government and one of the victims of the coupists was Late Brigadier General Samuel Ademulegun and his pretty wife, Latifat.

President Bola Tinubu’s gesture, last week via the approval of N18billion for families of fallen heroes re-awakened the pains associated with the 1966 coup that devastated many Nigerian families.

Brigadier General Ademulegun who died alongside his wife left behind toddlers that could barely write their own names when the assassins bullets struck.

In an appreciative mood, one of his surviving children, Solape Ademulegun Agbi penned down a touchy letter.

    Read her below:

“I commend President Bola Tinubu for approving the sum of 18 billion naira as Assurance Policy for the families of our fallen Heroes. It is quite reassuring that they have a place in the hearts of compatriots.

“Many of this category of Nigerians, especially children, have gone through harrowing experiences. It is my belief that this policy will look beyond the nascent North – East ( Boko Haram ) fallen Heroes.

“I urge those responsible for the management of this policy to remember Heroes past who died in active service, decades ago. Children and dependants of Heroes of the 1966 coup and counter coup, should not be forgotten, as they were denied full parental care from very tender ages.

“The Ademuleguns, for instance, lost their parents in the January 15, 1966 coup. The last two children, were just 4 and 6 years old, at the time.

“Brigadier Samuel Ademulegun (N3), was Commander 1 Brigade, Kaduna. He served Nigeria with passion and in 1964, led troops to Tanzania to quell a mutiny. That was after duty with United Nations Peace Keeping Forces in the Congo.

” His wife, Mrs Latifat Ademulegun, a nurse, died with him, both shot by the coupists. This tragedy did not deter their first son from joining the Nigerian Air Force. Late Frank Ademulegun ( NAF 294), retired as a Group Captain.

“Mention must be made of Brig. Zakari Maimalari, Colonels Kuru Mohammed, Ralph Shodeinde, Lt. Cols Yakubu Pam, Arthur Unegbe, Abogo Largema who lost their lives in the first coup and many others including Lt. Col Adekunle Fajuyi who died in the second coup of 1966.

“The horrors of those events, left deep cuts in the hearts of these families. The Ademuleguns were orphaned so early.

“Once again, I salute the Commander- in- Chief for this soothing balm.

  • Recruitment: Army woos Delta, Rivers indigenes to join military

Recruitment: Army woos Delta, Rivers indigenes to join military

The Nigeria Army in Rivers say it has commenced its recruitment campaign to woo indigent youths from the state to join the army.

It said both Rivers and Delta indigenes had the lowest representation in recent recruitments in the army.

Brig.-Gen. Timi Mackintosh, Team Leader, Department of Administration, Sensitisation and Advertisement, Nigeria Army 86 Intake, said this at a meeting with the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) in Rivers, Tammy Danagogo in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

He said the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, worried by the low representation of Rivers indigenes in the army, sent his team to encourage them to join the service.

“So, Rivers and Delta states in the South South, particularly, Rivers are lacking when it comes to recruitment into the Nigerian Army.

“For 84 and 85 regular intakes, Rivers state in particular did not make up to 60 per cent of its own quota.

“So, the COAS deemed it fit that we should visit you (Danagogo) to assist us speak to indigenes to join the army,” he said.

Mackintosh said the army would take care of those willing to join the service in the area of academics, and medical, among others.

“Our minimum requirement is four credits. However, there are people especially in the lower cadre who joined the military with four credits, but today they are going for their PhD and Masters.

“They achieved this because the army sent them to school.

“Some people might feel that they cannot make it into the army because they don’t know anybody, but the truth is that you don’t need to know anyone to join.

“Candidates just have to meet the basic criteria which includes being a Nigerian; proof they are Rivers indigenes, and physically, medically and psychologically fit, among others to join,” he said.

Also speaking, Danagogo commended the army for its interest in recruiting Rivers people into the service and called on the youth to come out in their numbers to join them.

He said the state government would immediately start sensitisation campaign to encourage the people to join the ongoing army recruitment.

The SSG attributed the low turnout of the people in the recruitment exercises over the years to ignorance and lack of information.

“As a government, we look forward to every avenue to empower and gainfully employ our people.

“The military is one of the elite groups that every government and father would want his children to belong to, and so, we will tell our people.

“One area we feel that we are being marginalised is in the enrolment of our citizens into the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) to become officers,” he said.

Danagogo pleaded with the army hierarchy to provide opportunities for its indigenes to join the NDA as well as notify the state government when such opportunities arise.

Israeli military says it has full control of Gaza border

The Israeli military early on Tuesday said that it had retaken full control of the border with Gaza.

This occurred after Hamas militants breached defences at the weekend and went on a rampage through nearby communities that left hundreds of Israelis dead.

Richard Hecht, a spokesman for the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), said that no militant had entered from the Gaza Strip since Monday night, but that there could still be some Palestinian attackers on the move inside Israel.

He said the bodies of 1,500 militants had been found in Israeli territory so far and that hundreds of other attackers had been captured.

He, however, cautioned that the exchanges of fire that had taken place in areas along the border since Hamas’ surprise multi-pronged assault on Israel on Saturday have still continued.

Clashes have taken place in recent hours in the communities of Sa’ad and Kissufim in the Negev desert, near the Gaza Strip.

Israel has meanwhile continued its relentless retaliatory airstrikes on the territory.

Since Saturday, some 900 people have been killed in Israel by Hamas fighters and more than 2,600 others injured, according to the Israeli Health Ministry.

According to the Health Ministry, Massive Israeli counter-attacks have killed at least 687 people and injured more than 3,800 in the Gaza Strip.

Israel called up on Monday about 300,000 reservists ahead of a potential ground invasion of the densely populated Palestinian enclave.

“We are now concentrating on our offensive in Gaza,’’ Hecht said, adding that the military has set up what it describes as ’’infrastructure for future operations.”

“What Hamas will face will be harsh and terrible,’’ Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said early on Monday evening. “We are only at the beginning.’’

  • Military takeover is a setback for prosperity in Africa – Envoy

Military takeover is a setback for prosperity in Africa – Envoy

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Amb. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, has said that military coups recently witnessed in some Africa countries are a setback for prosperity in the continent.

Muhammad-Bande told NAN in New York that anything contrary to democracy as entrenched in the regional and continental bodies’ constitutions would amount to setback for prosperity in Africa.

The regional union is the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) while the continental union is Africa Union (AU).

Muhammad-Bande spoke against the backdrop of succession of military coups unfolding across Africa with the recent being in Gabon.

The Gabon coup came on the heels of July coup in Niger, Burkina Faso in 2022, and Chad, Guinea, Sudan and Mali in the years prior to that.

Overall, all recent coups, except Myanmar, in 2021, have taken place on African continent.

The Nigerian envoy said countries in the continent fought for sovereignty of their nations and should be at liberty to choose how they would live.

“In the same vein, people also should be free within their own nations to determine how they live and so that is not a big thing to act, it is simply consistency with this, for any setback, must be called out as a setback.

“And people, who do not understand the meaning of military rule, should be told, this is not the way the continent or the sub-region wants to go or way the world wants to be.

“And we want to be clear concerning the right of people to choose freely, because we also had to fight to free ourselves from colonialism, one country after another, some more peaceful than others.

“But the result has been the same – to allow African countries respect the choice of the people within the constitution of the country,’’ he said

Muhammad-Bande said the agreement to uphold democracy is established in all the Charters, whether of the AU principles and all the ECOWAS principles

He said nothing was new about the agreement, emphasising that people should just understand and that nothing was conjured by anybody.

“It is a simple agreement to live in a particular language of constitution. So, this is the point where we are members of the United Nations.

“There are rules, there are norms and values embedded in that and we try to thrive to live up to those as the expectations; we have constitution of Nigeria. We try to live by it,’

The envoy said that Nigeria would continue to play its role in ECOWAS, AU, and the UN, even to actively participate at the ongoing 78th session of UN General Assembly.

He told NAN that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, would be attending the session and would elaborate further on the stand of Nigeria on some of the issues.

“I can tell you that for Nigeria, the whole question is that we are part of the ECOWAS and AU and also committed to the norms and values embedded in those organisations.

“Also, the norms of United Nations are very clear concerning peaceful, prosperous societies. Anything that is contrary to that is a setback.

“We are working within the rules to ensure that we continue to make progress in helping people decide their fate,’’ he said.

According to the group, tackling the security challenges facing the North and the entire country calls for adequate attention to troops welfare.

“We commend the Chief of Defence Staff for keying into the Federal Government poverty alleviation programmes for families of wounded and fallen soldiers. It is definitely a morale booster for troops.

“We Northerners have really suffered banditry and terrorism as life has not been normal in our region with businesses closed down and our people continuing to struggle to survive for some years now.

“We are very much aware that troops tackling these malaise will be encouraged by this cheering news which concerns their welfare.
