“Recall that the President had approved the sum of N70,000, which we have decided to exceed, considering the concerns raised by organised labour regarding our ability to pay,” he said.

Zamfara opens up on payment of new minimum wage

The Zamfara State Government says it will implement the N70,000 minimum wage very soon, the State Head of Service, Allhaji Ahmad Liman, has said.

Liman, who disclosed this at a press briefing in Gusau on Wednesday reiterated Gov. Dauda Lawal administration’s commitment to promoting the welfare of the civil servants in the state.

He said that Lawal has already promised to pay N70,000 minimum wage to the state civil servants.

“You know the state government set up a committee for the civil servants verification and that of the implementation of the 70,000 minimum wage. The two committees have been working day and night to complete the exercise,” he said.

Liman emphasised that the committee’s responsibility was to provide an accurate framework of civil servants data in the state for immediate implementation of the minimum wage.

“The welfare of workers is a top priority for our administration, I am very confident that the implementation of the new minimum is the top priority agenda of Gov. Lawal.

“The two committees conducting the ongoing exercises are expected to complete their work by the end of this month of November,” he stated.

Liman said that as soon as the committees complete their work and present their report to the governor he would approve the new minimum wage.

He said, “You know, the ongoing exercise is necessary to address various irregularities in the civil service sector inherited by the previous administration.”

The head of service mentioned ghost workers and over payment among the irregularities discovered at the ongoing verification exercise.

“We discovered a single general hospital in the state with 22 medical doctors receiving salary monthly, The ongoing exercise discovered only two doctors are real workers in that hospital, all the remaining 20 doctors were fake workers.

“There was also an issue of a secondary school teacher receiving N140,000 as his monthly salary, but the committee discovered that he was receiving N700,000,” he explained.

Liman further disclosed another issue of a medical doctor receiving N700,000 as his monthly salary but he was discovered by the committee receiving over N1 million.

“There are a lot of issues related to the civil service sector in the state, I believe at the end of the ongoing exercise, the details of the findings of the committee will be made available to the public.

“I am therefore appealing to the civil servants in the state to remain calm, the state government under Gov. Dauda Lawal is committed to their welfare,” he explained.

Minimum Wage: Cross River Committee gets 4 weeks deadline

The  Cross River Government has handed a four-week period to the Joint Public Service Negotiating and Implementation Committee for the N70,000 Minimum Wage to conclude its assignment.

The Commissioner for Information, Dr Erasmus Ekpang, who disclosed this in an interview in Calabar on Monday, said that the committee, inaugurated on Monday and chaired by the Head of Service, Dr Innocent Eteng, should agree on modalities to fashion out an acceptable minimum wage for the state civil servants.

Ekpang, however, said that the new wage that would be agreed upon should be such that would not hurt the state revenue.

“The governor has always maintained his desire to make the state workers happy by enhancing their welfare and working environment.

“The negotiation for the new minimum wage is to be concluded within the next four weeks and this is one of such moves.

“However, what will be agreed on and it’s implementation by the committee will be one that will not affect the smooth running of the government or other sectors of the state economy.”

Gov. Bassey Otu constituted a 16-member committee to negotiate a new minimum wage with labour in the state.

The membership of the committee included Mr Gregory Olayi and Monday Ogbodum as well as the Chairmen of the Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress.

  • Governors issued ultimatum to pay new minimum wage

Governors issued ultimatum to pay new minimum wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has given State governments an ultimatum of December 1 to implement the new minimum wage.

The NLC made this known on Sunday in a communique signed by its President, Mr Joe Ajaero at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Ajaero, who expressed dissatisfaction over the delay by some states to implement the new wage, said workers in affected states were finding it difficult to sustain themselves given the worsening state of the economy.

“The NEC notes with deep frustration the persistent delay and outright refusal by some state governments to implement the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act.

“This betrayal by certain governors and government officials across the country flies in the face of both legality and morality, as workers continue to be denied their rightful wages amidst rising economic hardship.

“It is a blatant disregard for the law and the lives of millions of Nigerian workers, who are being exploited by the very leaders sworn to protect them.

“The NEC therefore resolved to set up a National Minimum Wage Implementation Committee that will commence a nationwide assessment, mobilisation and campaign to educate citizens on the need to resist this assault on their dignity and rights.

“Furthermore, the NLC shall initiate a series of industrial actions in all non-compliant states and shall not relent until the minimum wage is fully implemented across Nigeria.

“To this end, all state Councils where the National Minimum Wage has not been fully implemented by the last day of Nov., 2024 have been directed to proceed on strike beginning from Dec. 1,” he said.

He called on government to embark on a wage review and immediately implement concrete interventions that would relieve the sufferings of Nigerians.

Furthermore, he said the NLC would initiate a series of industrial actions in all non-compliant states and would not relent until the minimum wage is fully implemented across Nigeria.

“Inflation continues to rise unchecked, with the costs of basic necessities spiralling beyond the reach of the average worker.

“Millions of Nigerians are being driven into destitution, forced to choose daily between feeding their families and seeking healthcare.

“Access to energy has become a mirage while workers become increasingly poorer even as they work longer hours to meet their other basic needs.

“As a result, nutritional diseases like Kwashiorkor and Marasmus have resurfaced in Nigeria,” he said.

The NLC president, while calling for immediate, concrete interventions from the Federal Government, called for the implementation of comprehensive social protection policies to shield Nigerians from poverty and ensure a living wage.

He decried the fact that the current price of fuel is significantly higher than the real market price.

“NLC demands appropriate pricing of petrol and calls for the public domestic refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna to quickly come back on stream to break-up the monopolistic stranglehold the big players have on the industry.

“The NLC stands in solidarity with the workers and people of Rivers State. We demand an immediate resolution that allows the state to continue to have unfettered access to its rightful revenue allocations,” he said.

He called on President Bola Tinubu to release the remaining protesters in various jails across the nation as NLC had severally demanded earlier and creating adequate safeguards to avert future occurrence.

“NEC -in- session expressed its appreciation to the federal Government for providing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to the Congress but noted that they are grossly inadequate to address the huge gap in transportation.

“It also noted the apparent CNG infrastructure deficits around the country which may scuttle the entire CNG objectives.

“Inflation continues to rise unchecked, with the costs of basic necessities spiralling beyond the reach of the average worker.

“The Nigeria Labour Congress remains unwavering in its commitment to the wellbeing and dignity of Nigerian workers.” he said.

Minimum wage: Bayelsa govt urges LGAs to improve IGR

The Bayelsa State Government has urged local government councils to shore up their Internally Generated Revenues (IGR) to meet the new minimum wage obligations.

The State Deputy Governor, Sen Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, made the call on Friday in Yenogoa while granting audience to the executive committee of the state chapter of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), local government branch.

The advice is sequel to the announcement of N80,000 as minimum wage by Gov Douye Diri of Bayelsa.

Ewhrudjakpo assured local government pensioners of the state government’s commitment towards improving their welfare as it took steps to implement the N80,000 new minimum wage in the state.

The deputy governor called on the councils to fashion out other sources of revenue rather than depend solely on monthly federal allocations.

He noted that it would be difficult for councils in the state to pay and sustain the new minimum wage if they continued to completely depend on statutory allocations.

Ewhrudjakpo said : “I have asked experts in that area to work out the new minimum wage to see what the local governments will be able to pay. I know that council workers will insist that they should be paid like their state counterparts.

“But we should know that the state government and local governments do not have the same level or sources of funding. How many of our local governments are able to generate N100 million in the whole year? Just very few of them.

“As I said earlier, the details of what is going to cost each local government area must be worked out first because if we are not careful, our local government areas will go bankrupt.

“That is why I have told them to be very innovative and serious about generating revenue for the councils.

“There is nothing that stops you from collecting little money from people selling in the market. Or, collect licences fee from boat, motorbike, keke operators. That’s not a crime. It is legitimate,”.

Responding to the retirees’ requests, Ewhrudjakpo assured them that arrangements were underway to clear and pay pensioners who were inadvertently omitted in the payment of gratuities across the board last year.

He also promised to make some efforts to ensure that local government retirees have a share of the N7 billion the state government recently announced for the payment of outstanding gratuities.

On the issue of upward review of monthly pensions to the retirees, the deputy governor said such review would be based on the capacity of the local governments which currently depended mainly on monthly federal allocations.

He congratulated the executive committee members of the local government wing of the NUP on their recent inauguration, adding that government would look into their request for an operational vehicle, among others.

Earlier in his presentation, the Chairman of the local government branch of the NUP in the state, Mr Noel Itade, said their visit was to introduce the new executive committee members to the deputy governor.

Itade, who thanked the state government for approving N7 billion for gratuities, pleaded that local government pensioners who were omitted in the 2023 gratuity payment exercise be reconsidered for payment.

He also called for an upward review of their pensions to reflect the present economic realities in the country, as the Federal Government had done for its retirees.

“The recommendation of the committee got approval from the governor for the implementation of the new salary scale.

“This new scale will be implemented as soon as the consequential adjustments process is completed by the committee which comprises of government and top labour officials,” he stated.

The Commissioner further said an agency of the Federal Government —- National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) —- recently in its 2024 employment statistics rated Oyo state well.

“The state was rated as the most worker-friendly state in the whole of South-West.

“This NBS rating was as a result of the significant decline in Oyo state unemployment rate following a series of high-pitched employment of workers into various sectors of the state,” he said.

Oyelade also said workers in the state have always received their salaries on the 25th of every month since Makinde came into office in 2019.

He added that the Makinde administration had paid the backlog of gratuities from 2008 to 2015 for pensioners with an increase in gratuity payment.

The civil servants, who walked through parts of Akure, the state capital, later converged at the Government House, Alagbaka, where they were warmly received.

Aiyedatiwa emphasised that the welfare of civil servants remained a priority of his administration.

  • Minimum wage: Anambra workers tell Soludo to use FG’s template

Minimum wage: Anambra workers tell Soludo to use FG’s template

Anambra labour leaders, on Friday, appealed to Gov. Charles Soludo to use the Federal Government’s template to compute the workers’ new minimum wage.

The President, Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Anambra Chapter, made the appeal in Awka, while briefing newsmen on the workers’ expectations from the new minimum wage.

Aromeh said that the organised labour in the state, comprising the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and NULGE, “are collectively appealing to Soludo, in the interest of workers, to use the chart released by the Federal Government.

“Yes, there is an issue of new minimum wage on ground and the labour leaders, including NLC, TUC and NULGE, have been meeting with the governor on the matter.

“In Anambra, unfortunately, the  governor is not getting it right, because from what we have seen from him and his team, we are not happy, especially in the areas that affect salaries Grade Levels eight to 17, government’s proposal is nothing to write home about,” he said.

Aromeh further said that though the government is basing its argument on its internally generated revenue, but available reports show that Anambra is far better than a number of states that have adopted the Federal Government’s template for the new minimum wage.

“The Federal Government’s chart must be used and not for the state to adopt a discriminatory package for workers on different grade levels.

“If what the state is bringing to the table is allowed, it means that as you progress, your take home pay will continue to go down,” he said.

The NULGE boss wondered why a worker on Grade Level one, step one, would earn N70,000 plus, while a staff on Grade Level eight would also earn N70,000 plus every month.

“It is wrong. The real thing should be done. NULGE is not happy about it and seriously pleading with the Anambra Government and Mr Governor as the father to use the chart used by the Federal Government.

“Gov. Soludo is friendly with Anambra workers and NULGE in particular, but on this new minimum wage, he is not protecting the collective interest of the workers.

“Our collective stand is that the normal chart be used, and everything worked out based on percentage.

“We are optimistic that he will do something, urgently, because he knows the economic hardship facing the workers,’’ he said.

Aromeh said that all the workers in the country operate in the same market and economy, hence no state should apply a template different from the one released by the Federal Government.

“If our governor does not adopt the Federal Government’s template, we have other options than giving him ultimatum or going to court because we do not want to bring problem in the state,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the government would reason with the workers to use the Federal Government’s template, due to the current economic hardship in the country.
