The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has expressed optimism in meeting stakeholders’ needs in the broadcasting industry, using `Audience Measurement System’ report.

Idris gave the asurance at the presentation of the report and findings of the Task Team on “Audience Measurement System in Broadcasting’’ on Friday in Abuja.

According to him, the comprehensive findings and report is a crucial step forward in shaping the future of our media and creative industry.

“The Audience Measurement System holds immense importance in ensuring that our broadcasting endeavours are not only impactful but also reflective of the diverse preferences and needs of our audience.

“It is a tool that empowers us to understand and respond to the dynamic nature of our media consumers, providing valuable insights into their viewing habits, content preferences, and engagement patterns.

“With the knowledge derived from the Audience Measurement System, we are better equipped to shape policies that promote diversity, quality content, and inclusivity,’’ Idris said.

He then commended the task team for their dedication and tireless work in designing the framework.

“Your commitment to excellence and thoroughness in examining the intricacies of our broadcast audience is commendable. This report stands as a testament to your hard work,’’ he added.

The minister also said that there was a need to leverage this valuable resource to strengthen Nigeria’s media terrain.

“And, ensure that our broadcasts continue to be a powerful force for information, entertainment and societal cohesion.”

He gave assurance to the stakeholders that he would engage further with the regulatory agencies such as the National Broadcasting Commission, the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria and other critical stakeholders.

The aim of the engagement, he said, was to secure their buy-in on how best to utilise the findings for the betterment of the advertising and broadcasting industries.

According to the minister, the introduction of the Audience Measurement System becomes imperative because, currently, the broadcast and advertising market is underperforming despite the country’s huge population.

He said that in spite of having more than three times the eyeballs in South Africa, Nigeria’s television advertising market revenue was low compared to that of South Africa and Kenya.

He further reiterated that the comprehensive insights provided by the findings of this Committee offered a unique opportunity to strategically position the broadcasting industry as a catalyst for economic growth.

“By leveraging the data on audience behaviour, preferences, and engagement patterns, we aim to facilitate a more conducive environment for economic activities within the media sector,’’ he added.

Earlier, the Head of the Task Team, Alhaji Garba Kankarofi, said the team was inaugurated in 2020 by Idris’ predecessor with Mr Joseph Mutah as Secretary.

“We have done a wonderful job. The report includes the take of prominent stakeholders in the media industry.

“The work of the committee is private sector driven. I want to thank all members of the technical committee and others for doing a wonderful work.

“The total submission also has inputs from friends of the house. We worked in harmony with many others to come up with this report,’’ Kankarofi said.

The report of the Audience Measurement System in Broadcasting has 182 pages.

The First Media and Entertainment Integrated Nigeria Ltd, a marketing research company made a presentation on the scientific research process that brought about the report.

We are monitoring activities on Twitter – Minister of information

Speaking at the 3rd edition of the ‘PMB Administration Scorecard 2015-2023’ series on Thursday, the Minister of information, Lai Mohammed stated that, the government is monitoring activities on Twitter following its takeover by a new owner.

According to Lai, he said “Many have asked for our reaction following reports that there has been a spike in fake news, disinformation and hate speech since the micro-blogging site changed ownership.

“Many have even asked us if another ban is in the offing. Let me say this: We are closely monitoring the evolving developments at Twitter.

“It has never been our intention to ban any social media platform or stifle free speech. Not at all.

“What happened in the case of Twitter is well known to all. Twitter became a platform of choice for those who want to destabilize Nigeria using fake news, disinformation and hate speech.

“No nation will allow any social media platform to plunge it into anarchy. Definitely not Nigeria. But we have continued to engage positively with the different social media platforms, including Facebook, Google (owners of YouTube) and Twitter.

“We have no intention of banning any social media platform again. But we will also not sit by and allow any platform whatsoever to throw our nation into crisis.”

Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed does not have COVID-19 – Aide

The Ministry of Information and Culture has debunked reports in the media that the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed has Coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The ministry in a statement issued on Sunday and signed by his media aide, Segun Adeyemi debunked the story describing the media houses that published it as lapdogs.

    Read full statement below:

The attention of the office of the Honourable Minister of Information
and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has been drawn to a report making
the rounds that he has contracted the Covid-19 virus and that he is
now in isolation, where he is receiving treatment.

For the record, the Minister does not have Covid-19, hence he is
neither in isolation nor receiving treatment anywhere.

That report, which was first published by an online newspaper and then
latched on to by some mainstream lapdog media, once again highlights
the uphill task we face in our campaign to stamp out fake news and
    misinformation.

A journalism mantra says ‘when in doubt, leave it out’. Also embedded
in the code of ethics for journalists are the basic principles of
truthfulness and accuracy, among others. The report in question did
    not meet those standards.

The Minister was at the Federal Executive Council meeting on
Wednesday, an extraordinary FEC meeting on Thursday and also witnessed
the swearing-in of the Minister of State for Works and Housing on
Friday. All these events took place at the Villa, where the
correspondents of many media organizations are deployed. In fact, the
Minister coordinated the post-FEC press briefing on Wednesday and
Thursday. Could he have done this from
the imaginary isolation centre where he was consigned by a mischievous reporter?

As a member of the Presidential Steering Committee on Covid-19, the
Minister has the added responsibility of leading by example, hence
would not have hesitated to publicly announce his Covid-19 status if
indeed he has contracted the virus. After all, he is not only fully
vaccinated, he has also taken the booster shot, a situation that
offers him different layers of protection even if he contracts the
virus. For those who contract the virus, they deserve our empathy and
    prayers, not stigmatization.

The media does itself a great disservice by making ‘exclusive news’
out of beer parlor gist. Sooner or later, the truth will come out and
a fake-news-peddling-organization will have its credibility dented for
    good.

In the best tradition of journalism, we expect the online newspaper
behind this fake news not only to retract the publication but also to
apologize to the Minister for causing him such embarrassment,
especially in a season of joy.
