Minister of Power, Adelabu hints at fresh electricity Tariff hike

The Federal Government is taking new steps to eliminate electricity subsidies and plans to implement a fully cost-reflective tariff structure to address the growing ₦5 trillion debt in the power sector.

TheNewsGuru reports that the Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu announced this on Tuesday during the Mission 300 Stakeholders’ Engagement in Abuja where he described these changes as part of a broader reform aimed at ensuring “sustainability and bankability” in Nigeria’s power sector.

Adelabu explained that there is currently a significant outstanding debt owed to power generation companies due to unpaid government subsidies, which amounts to approximately ₦4 trillion as of December 2024.

He stated that the government is working on ways to end these subsidy payments and transition to a full cost-reflective tariff regime, while still providing targeted support for vulnerable Nigerians.

It was reported earlier that in the first half of 2025, the Federal Government accrued an additional ₦1.1 trillion in subsidies, bringing the sector’s total debt to ₦5 trillion.

The new tariff model is expected to lead to significant price increases across all electricity bands, particularly affecting Band B and lower bands the most. Current assessments show that allowed tariffs are significantly lower than the actual cost of supply.

Cost vs Allowed Tariff Breakdown [Selected Bands]

    • Band A (Non-MD): ₦231.79 (cost) vs ₦209.50 (allowed)
    • Band B (Non-MD): ₦223.94 (cost) vs ₦68.96 (allowed)
    • Band C (Non-MD): ₦209.32 (cost) vs ₦56.38 (allowed)
    • Band D (Non-MD): ₦164.34 (cost) vs ₦39.67 (allowed)
    • Band E (Non-MD): ₦145.07 (cost) vs ₦39.44 (allowed)

Reacting to the development, the President of the Nigeria Consumer Protection Network, Kunle Olubiyo, warned that any electricity tariff hike without improvements in service delivery would amount to exploitation.

“There’s been no real increase in generation, transmission, or distribution despite tripled revenues in the last year,” Daily Trust quoted Olubiyo as saying.

“Between 2015 and now, we’ve only added about 400MW of power capacity.”

He urged the government to consider political sensitivity and avoid abrupt decisions that may “carry unintended consequences.”

Tinubu’s minister declares governorship ambition, says he will contest in 2027

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu has declared his intention to contest the Oyo State governorship seat in 2027, during consultations with key All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in the state.

Adelabu made this known on Friday while addressing party leaders,  as he assured that the party will not impose any candidate on members.

“I am here to tell you that I want to contest for governor of Oyo State in 2027. I am ready to put to test all experience I have gathered from the past two elections.

Adelabu was quoted in the media, as saying that the consultations, which involved stakeholders in Oyo and Ogbomoso areas, were part of his legwork ahead of 2027.

Widely touted as President Bola Tinubu’s preferred choice for the race, the minister however, assured the stakeholders of a transparent selection process, saying there would not be imposition of candidate by anyone.

“I am up to the task. I want to show them that I can withstand and survive competition and come out victorious,” he was quoted to have said.

The minister pleaded with those he might have offended through his actions and utterances in the past to forgive him.

According to him, they should put whatever grievances behind them focus on the bigger picture of seeing the APC win the state in the next election.

“I am not against other zones becoming governor of the state, all I know is that God’s time is the best.

“Ogbomoso is very important in this state election, I am here to seek for your support and backing. I am happy to see that all the factions in Ogbomoso are now one,” he was quoted as saying to the stakeholders in Ogbomoso.

Adelabu also urged the supporters to support President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, for “more dividends of democracy.”

“This is another turn of Yoruba to serve their two terms as President of Nigeria. Nigeria has a lot to benefit if Tinubu is re-elected,” Adelabu added.

Addressing stakeholders in the ancient Oyo town, the minister urged them to support his aspiration.

“I will run all inclusive government where everybody will be involved in governance of the state and no one will be left behind if I become governor of the state in 2027.

“I am here for people to know that no one can impose anybody. I want to work and prove to our party members that I am up to the task. I want to show them that I can withstand and survive competition and come out victorious.

“Oyo is like a second home to me, my supporters, followers, associates and allied are all here. They have been supporting me in the past and they are ready to support me again.

“I will give what is due to Oyo. Oyo zone deserves better treatment because it is symbolic. Oyo is historical, symbolic and a blessing to the entire state,”

My return to APC not about governorship ambition – Adelabu

The Minister of Power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu, says his return to to the All Progressives Congress (APC)  from Accord Party is not about succeeding Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State in 2027.

Adelabu said this during his official return to the APC  at the party secretariat at Oke-Ado, Ibadan on Friday.

Adelabu had in May 2022 left the APC to join Accord party after failing to secure the governorship ticket of the party.

The minister, while addressing party faithful at the event, said that he and others that left the party with him had formally returned to APC to make the party stronger.

He explained they had earlier left the party based on principle, and not because they had problems with APC in the state or with party members.

“I  returned not because of 2027 governorship ambition or to takeover the party, but because I believe this is a party that brought President Bola Tinubu to power, and we need to support him to deliver on his electoral promises.

“This is not time for politics, it is time for governance and Tinubu needs our support for him to succeed and deliver on his Renewed Hope Agenda.

“I have come back to the party not to takeover the party and not to dissolve executives;we have come to the party to extend hands of fellowship and reconciliation.

“We are assuring you that we are back for cooperation and collaboration for us to build a strong party so that the party will takeover power in the state at the end of the day in  2027,” Adelabu said.

In his remarks, APC Chairman in the state,  Mr. Isaac Omodewu, who was represented by the Party Secretary, Alhaji Tajudeen Olanike, said that the party was open for reconciliation and was ready to listen to all aggrieved members,to build a stronger party.

Also speaking, a former deputy governor, Mr Moses Adeyemo, said that the party needed peace and unity of all members for progress.

National grid collapsed due to fire outbreak-Power Minister

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has disclosed that fire outbreak caused the nationwide blackout in Nigeria last Thursday.

ThNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls the grid collapsed totally around 12:40 a.m., leading to the massive loss of supply to power distributors nationwide.

But giving details of what led to the development in a Facebook post on Thursday, the minister explained that a fire outbreak at Kainji/Jebba located in the North-central caused the blackout.

Adelabu said, “At 00:35Hrs this morning, a fire outbreak with explosion sound was observed on Kainji/Jebba 330kV line 2 (Cct K2J) blue phase CVT & Blue phase line Isolator of Kainji/Jebba 330kV line 1 was observed burning. This led to sharp drops in frequency from 50.29Hz to 49.67 Hz at 0:35:06Hrs with Jebba generation loss of 356.63MW resulted in system collapse of the grid.

“We are on top of the situation and speedy restoration is in progress. The fire has been fully arrested and over half of the connections are now up and the rest will be fully restored in no time because of response to the situation and work done so far. Let’s get the restoration work completed as soon as possible.

Delay in update was deliberate, so as not to cause panic and to also be able to update on progress of remedial actions taken so far.

This is to ensure economic and security saboteurs don’t take advantage of every situation reported.”

  • Nigeria’s lowest electricity generation was 2,661.82 Mega Watts (MW)- Minister of Power

The Minister of Power, Engr. Abubakar Aliyu, has said the lowest electricity generation was 2,661.82 Mega Watts (MW).

He explained that this was due to the partial shutdown of the Oben Gas Plant to address the repair of critical gas processing equipment.

According to the Nigerian Electricity System Operator (SO) of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) System Performance of 3rd June 2022, peak generation was 3,450.60Mw.

The report added that total energy generated was 3,105Mw while total energy sent out was 3,059Mw.

Meanwhile, the minister, in a press statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Mallam Isa Sanusi, said: “We wish to notify the general public that the current dip in electricity generation is a result of the partial shutdown of the Oben Gas Plant to address the repair of critical gas processing equipment.”

TheNewsGuru, com (TNG) recalls that the federal government gas had earlier accused some States Governments of hampering projects that are meant to strengthen and expand the national power grid for a better supply of electricity in the country.

The incident, he said, unfortunately, occurred at a time when other power plants on other gas sources are undergoing planned maintenance and capacity testing.

The minister, however, noted that Seplat Energy Plc has mobilized equipment, material, and personnel to the site with a view to expediting the restoration of normal gas supply to the affected power plants.

He assured the public that the repair work would be concluded this weekend and normalcy will be restored.

“While pleading with electricity consumers with the current state of supply, we wish to assure the general public that efforts are being made for a sustained improvement of supply across the country,” the minister said.

Consequently, energy allocation to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) was reduced from 650Mw to 228.65Mw, representing a 64.8% decrease.

Its management which disclosed this in a public notice assured its customers of distributing the allocation equitably.

The public notice reads in part: “We are aware that the instability of electricity supply has persisted. This is still due to the reduced load allocation to our franchise area.

“AEDC’s allocation is currently 228.63Mw which is significantly lower than the average allocation of 650Mw during the optimal generation period.”

  • Minister blames vandals for latest collapse of electricity grid

Minister blames vandals for latest collapse of electricity grid

The Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu, has blamed the latest collapse of electricity grid on vandals. He says it was due to the sudden loss of about 400MW of generation, caused by vandalism on a transmission tower on the Odukpani — Ikot Ekpene 330kV double circuit transmission line.

The Power Minister disclosed this in a statement signed by his Special Adviser (Media) Isa Sanusi.

His words: “Further to our earlier press release, we wish to apprise the general public that the immediate cause of national blackout (system collapse) was an act of vandalism on a transmission tower on the Odukpani — Ikot Ekpene 330kV double circuit transmission line thus resulting in a sudden loss of about 400MW of generation. This consequently led to a cascade of plants shut down across the country.

“We wish to notify the public that power on the grid is being restored sequentially by the System Operator as other on-grid power plants are being dispatched to cover the lost generation capacity from the Calabar power plant owned by the Niger Power Holding Company Ltd.

The minister said the federal government is probing the immediate and remote causes of the recurring grid failure in the country.

He said the process of restoring power supply is ongoing following the national grid collapse at 6.30 p. m. on Friday.

A statement by Sanusi noted that some sections of the national grid had been energised already and supply restored to consumers.

“We wish to notify the general public of the incidence of a system collapse which occurred at 18:30hrs on April 8, resulting in power outages in many parts of the country.

“A detailed investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the recurring grid failure is currently ongoing by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and System Operator of the national grid.

“We wish to assure Nigerians that the Federal Government is working assiduously to deliver on the much-needed reforms and investments,” he said.

Sanusi said the reforms included Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and other investment that are critical to improving the capacity and reliability of the national grid.

He said that the reform was in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive on closing infrastructure deficits in critical sectors of the Nigerian economy
