No sign of hunger in Nigeria – Agric Minister

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Muhammad Sabo Nanono on Monday said Nigeria is producing enough to feed itself, contrary to the narrative in some quarters that there is hunger in the land.

Nanono said this at a news conference in Abuja as part of the activities to mark the 2019 World Food Day being celebrated internationally on Oct. 16.

He said it was wrong to promote the idea that there was hunger in Nigeria, adding that there were only inconveniences being addressed by the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders like the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

According to the minister, the World Food Day is set aside to discuss food production.

“From what I am seeing in this conference room, there is no sign of hunger but obesity. Only a few people like me are either trying to balance their diet or is it fasting that is responsible for the way some of us look?

“The policy of the present government for us to feed ourselves is key. In the process value chains are being created to empower people and give out some jobs.

“I think we are producing enough now to feed ourselves and I think there is no hunger but if you say inconveniences I would agree.

“When people talk about hunger I laugh because they do not know hunger. If you go to other countries you will see what hunger is.

“Food in Nigeria is fairly cheap compared to other countries. In Kano for instance, you can eat N30 worth of food and be satisfied. So, we should be thankful that we can feed ourselves and we have relatively cheap food in this country,” he said.

On fears that insecurity and flood may lead to food shortage, the minister said it is true that there were challenges in some states.

According to him, reports from Gombe and Bauchi states where I visited a few days ago, showed that there will be bumper harvest.

“Although, there has been flood and insurgency but I think the surplus that will be created in other parts of the country will balance up food shortage in other areas.

“In Nigeria, we are lucky that one of the food security spot is in Dawano market, Kano. But what we need is to reorganise our markets to solve the problem of malnutrition and other issues,” he said.

The minister noted the narrative of hunger was erroneous, noting that Nigeria was a buffer zone for migration for the the rest of West African sub regions.

He explained that there were lots of people from other African countries in Nigeria, who often blend into the system and were not easily identified except for their assent.

On border closure, Nanono said that the report from farmers and dealers in rice and other commodities was that of commendation.

He said although many people were not comfortable with the development when it happened, the testimonies that followed the closure were encouraging.

The minister said, “I think when the government came out with the rice policy, most people felt uneasy because they are used to imported rice, which sometimes are expired but we are now seeing the benefit.

“Some of our neighbouring countries are using Nigeria as dumping ground and efforts to let them know failed. So we closed the borders to sensitise them on the implications of that.

“One of the largest producers of Nigeria rice was in my office after the closure of the borders and they had about 600 tonnes of rice in the warehouse but that within the week the borders were closed 50 per cent was sold and farmers are smiling.

“So, as long as the countries will not respect the protocol, the border closure will remain.”

On rejection of Nigerian products in the international market, Nanono said efforts were being made to engage relevant inspection agencies to access and certify products for export.

On high cost of imported wheat, the minister said if Nigerians decide to stop consuming wheat bread the problem would be tackled.

According to him, bread is food for the elite and ordinary Nigerians eat more of local foods for breakfast than bread that can be done away with.

Nanono urged Nigerians, particularly the aged, to eat balanced diet, exercise regularly to shed weight, adding that there was a need for continued sensitisation on healthy living.

Minister condemns lynching of ‘one chance’ robbers in Abuja

The FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello has decried the lynching of three suspected traffic robbers popularly known as ‘One Chance’ in the Dutse Alhaji area of the Federal Capital City.

The Special Assistant on Media to the FCT Minister, Malam Abubakar Sani made this known in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

NAN reports that three suspected ‘one chance’ robbers were allegedly set ablaze by a mob at Dutse Alhaji junction on Kubwa-Zuba highway, on Monday in Abuja.

The minister frowned at the mob action which led to the unfortunate death of the three suspects and restated the FCT Administration’s resolve to reduce criminal activities to the barest in Abuja.

“The FCT Administration is not leaving any stone unturned to ensure that the entire territory is free of criminality and criminal elements.

“That is why we are working round the clock with the security agencies to maintain a 24 hours surveillance round the city and its environs.

“To a very large extent, we are happy with what the security agencies are doing to keep the territory safe and arrest all criminal elements particularly traffic robbers, kidnappers and other lawbreakers where ever they may be.”

Bello, however, noted that the killing of the three robbers was an act of lawlessness which the FCT Administration strongly condemned.

“No group or individual has the right to take anybody’s life the way these young men were burnt to death. I have directed the Police to carry out a thorough investigation and bring the papetrators to book”.

The Minister, who called on residents to remain law abiding, warned that any individual or group found taking laws into their hands or resorting to self help would be dealt with in accordance with the relevant law.

Bello appealed to traditional, community and religious leaders to step up engagements with their subjects by emphasising the need for obedience to the laws of the land and refraining from acts capable of causing the breakdown of law and order.

Brazil friendly will be good test for Super Eagles – Minister

Sunday Dare, the Minister of Youths and Sports Development, on Saturday in Abuja said the upcoming friendly game between Nigeria and Brazil would expose the Super Eagles’ strengths and weaknesses.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that three-times African champions Super Eagles will take on Brazil at the Singapore National Stadium in Kallang on Oct. 13.

This is coming 23 years after Nigeria, on their way to winning Africa’s first Olympic football gold medal, spanked the Selecao 4-3 after extra-time.

This was in the semi-finals at the Athens Stadium in the State of Georgia, U.S.

Dare said that even though the Oct. 13 game was a friendly, there was a lot at stake for both countries, describing it as a good test for the Super Eagles.

“The game in Singapore is a friendly, but also it is a friendly that we think will test our boys and we will see how prepared they are.

“It will also show our strong departments and areas where we are weak, so, we look forward to a very engaging and interesting game.

“We all know that Brazil is reputed to be a footballing nation and Nigeria is also one. We have ego at play even though it’s a friendly, but we have two great footballing nations playing a friendly and we hope Nigeria will excel.

“I am not one that predicts matches, but I hope our boys will play excellently well because we have got talents on that team and I know they will show what they have got on the day,” he said.

Dare also said the Buhari administration was committed to ensuring an all-round development of sports, adding that the Sports Ministry was ready to work with all the federations in the country.

“Let me also say, like I used to say, that I have brought to sports development in this country a fresh insight, an injection of a new dynamism in sports administration.

“In the past, there were distractions. But we will not be distracted, our eyes are set at the tip of the spear, we have a template and we will follow our plans.

“Also, we will go by the rule of law and also work with all federations, so long as the leadership is recognised by law.

“At that point, we owe it to Nigerians to work with them to such a point where we can develop every sports activity in our country the way they should be and put them in the right perspective,” the minister said.

  • Buhari’s ex-minister, Alhassan returns to PDP

Former Women Affairs Minister under the incumbent administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha Alhassan, who suffered massive defeat in the 2019 governorship election in Taraba State, says she has completed arrangements to return to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Hajia Alhassan was the governorship standard bearer of the United Democratic Party (UDP) in the 2019 elections in which she scored only 14, 651 votes.

She joined the UDP on the eve of the election after she failed to secure the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket, a party she contested under in 2015 and was able to secure 275,966 votes to come second in the governorship poll.

Hajia Alhassan was subsequently made the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development by President Muhammadu Buhari, but had to resign amid doubts over her political loyalty.

Hajia Alhassan told reporters on Sunday after a UDP stakeholders meeting in Jalingo that the majority of her supporters in the 168 wards of Taraba had encouraged her to shift base to the PDP.

She said that the stakeholders meeting, which lasted till midnight on Saturday, drew participation from all those who contested for various political offices on the platform of the UDP, executive members of the party from the ward to state levels and other respected elders.

Alhassan added that more than 80 per cent of respondents in an opinion poll conducted by a committee headed Alhaji Abdulmumini Vaki, a former PDP chairman in the state, which covered the 16 local governments, suggested that she should move to PDP.

The former minister said, based on the outcome of the opinion poll, she had no option but to go by the decision of majority members of the UDP.

She said: “I cannot go against the decision of the popular opinions of my supporters,” adding that she was glad that the committee did not suggest the APC as an option.

A communiqué issued at the end of the stakeholders meeting, a copy of which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jalingo on Saturday night, recommended that two committees be set up immediately to fast track the defection process.

According to the communiqué, which was signed by the state UDP Chairman, Alhaji Hassan Chul, the first committee is to visit the national leadership of the UDP in Abuja to express the appreciation of supporters of the former minister for providing her the platform to run for the 2019 governorship election.

The communique added that the second committee is to arrange a meeting with PDP leadership in Taraba to work out modalities for the former minister’s official return to the PDP.

NAN reports that Alhassan contested and won the election for the senatorial seat of Taraba North in 2011 under the PDP before defecting to APC in 2015.

  • Kwara APC caucus kicks against Saraki’s nomination as minister

Some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) under the Kwara State APC Caucus have regarded the nomination of Senator Gbemisola Saraki as minister by President Muhammadu Buhari as indirect restoration of the Saraki dynasty in the state.
The group said that already, her announcement as a minister-designate had thrown the defeated Saraki dynasty into celebration moods.
The APC Caucus Chairman and Secretary Yusuf Mohamnmed and Buhari Aliyu added that if they had their way with President Buhari, “we would have preferred another person from the state to replace Senator Gbemisola Saraki in order to save the people of the state the nightmare of going back to the dark days of the Saraki’s reign again.”
They hailed the president for re-nominating Alhaji Lai Mohammed as minister-designate, adding that “we wish however, like to state that we have received the nomination of Senator Gbemisola Saraki with mixed feelings.
“We are very apprehensive of the fact that as the saying goes, ‘blood is thicker than water.’ Therefore, we are afraid that the appointment of Senator Gbemisola Saraki as a minister, is likely to bring back the sad memories of the retrogressive political activities of the Saraki
dynasty, which impacted negatively on the lives of majority of the people of the state.
“We are of the believe that we have been able to defeat and wean ourselves from the Saraki’s negative political influences and strongholds that have left bitter and sour tastes in the mouths of
majority of the people of the state during the divinely inspired victory of the people in the last general elections in the state.
“However, we are now very worried and unhappy that the appointment of Senator Gbemisola Saraki as a minster, would most likely provide easy access and platform, which shall be employed to bring back this era of the misrule and financial rape that were imposed on us in Kwara state, during the past 16 years of political control by the Saraki dynasty which Senator Gbemisola Saraki was also an active participant.”

Ajimobi speaks on rejecting Buhari's ministerial offer

… Says he prefer being senator to minister
Immediate past governor of Oyo State Abiola Ajimobi has revealed his focus is on retrieving his senatorial mandate in the court as against pursuing ministerial appointment.
He stressed serving at the Senate is his personal preference.
The former governor denied he rejected ministerial appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari, saying he was not offered the appointment in the first place.
He made the disclosures in a telephone chat with The Nation on Thursday.
Reports went round on digital media on Wednesday he rejected a ministerial appointment offered him by the president.
The report added that Ajimobi said the appointment should go to a younger member of the party.
But the former governor told The Nation that it is impossible to reject what is not offered.
He said he only expressed his personal choice for the Senate, stressing it was the reason he was committed to the petition his party filed against Sen. Kola Balogun at the tribunal.
The latter was declared the winner of the Oyo South Senatorial District election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The elected senator is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while Ajimobi is of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ajimobi however affirmed the ministerial appointment should go to a younger member of the party in Oyo State since he is not the only APC member in the state.
He said: “I am in court for my senatorial election. I only expressed my preference, that I am in court because I prefer the Senate.
“How can I be pursuing the Senate and ministerial appointment at the same time? I prefer the Senate.
“I hold President Muhammadu Buhari in high esteem. I will actually prefer a younger person to be considered for the ministerial slot since I am pursuing my senatorial ambition.”
He said those behind the misleading report wanted to cause disaffection between him and President Buhari whom he has a lot of respect for.
“I don’t know the source of their report. They just want to set me against Mr President and it won’t work,” Ajimobi said.
