What Tinubu mandated me to do – Mohammed Idris

The Minister of Information and National Orientation Alhaji Mohammed Idris, says, President Bola Tinubu mandated him to promote patriotism, honesty and transparency as the core values of the administration.

The Minister made this known in an interview with NAN in Abuja.

According to him, President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ is to take Nigeria to an enviable height among the committee of nations and change the negative narrative about the country.

“He charged me with the responsibility to ensure that Nigerians are reoriented within the few years that we are here, so that, at least, we can recover our sense as a nation and begin to go in the right direction.

“It is a great challenge. You know that moral decadence is not among the youths only but among the entire social strata of the country.

“I think that is why the president renamed the Ministry of Information and Culture to Ministry of Information and National Orientation.

“It means the president want to put the issues of orientation and reorientation in the front burner,” Idris said.

The Minister further explained that the virtues of patriotism, honestly, and transparency were some of the things that Tinubu is vigorously promoting.

“He has given us a marching order to see that those values are promoted and put on the front burner and disseminated to the majority of Nigerians for the good of all”.

  • Passports backlog and Minister Tunji-Ojo’s wave of ‘magic wand’ – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Passports backlog and Minister Tunji-Ojo’s wave of ‘magic wand’ – By Ehichioya Ezomon

When someone does a good job, they deserve our praise, and our honour. Today, that praise, that honour goes to the Minister of Interior, Mr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for a promise made and a promise kept. He’d pledged on September 7, 2023, that the backlog of applications for 204,000 passports would be cleared in two weeks.
But the minister was “laughed out of court” because Nigerians had heard such promises from different Ministers of Interior and Comptroller-Generals of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and they never delivered on those declarations.
So, Tunji-Ojo making the assurances to clear accumulated passports in two weeks was like a promise made by a drunk under the influence, as usual. But this minister was a different promise-maker, who bandied the name of President Bola Tinubu as wanting the backlog cleared because he (Tinubu) was “embarrassed” by the undue delays in their issuance.
And pronto, the passport officials – lethargic in operations, and notorious in underhand dealings to fleece hapless applicants – swung into action, and in a record time, “the 204,000 passports were cleared.”
Besides former Minister of Aviation under the Muhammadu Buhari government, Mr Hadi Sirika – who’d promised a “brand new runway” for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, and delivered it with 24 hours to spare – Nigerians can’t recall in recent history such a “magician” like Minister Tunji-Ojo.
Not even former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola (former Governor of Osun State), could solve the endemic delays in passport issuance in his four-year supervision of the ministry, leaving behind the backlog inherited, and now “cleared in a jiffy” by Tunji-Ojo.
The minister gave a “marching order” to the NIS in September, demanding swift clearance of the pending passport applications in two weeks. At a meeting with top government officials, including the Acting Comptroller-General of NIS, Mrs Caroline Adepoju, and the Managing Director of Iris Smart Technologies (that produces passport booklets), Mr Yinka Fisher, the minister said he’s determined to remove “bottlenecks in the acquisition of passports and other immigration documents.”
Describing the task ahead as a national emergency, Tunji-Ojo said: “As far as I am concerned, the issue of passport is a national emergency. I keep getting emails daily from Nigerians complaining. We cannot continue like that.
“It has become an embarrassment to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I represent him here as your minister. That embarrassment is mine now. I am not changing my words. I need the backlog cleared in two weeks.”
As a strategy for achieving the goal, the minister “man-marked,” and monitored the process, making the passport officials to give him progress reports every morning until “mission accomplished.”
Even as Tunji-Ojo’s hit the bull’s eye with his first shot at clearing the backlog of passports, he’s promised more actions that’d ease the processing of passports within two weeks, and “the documents would be delivered to the owners at homes, in offices or places of their choice.”
He told visiting Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, in his office in Abuja on September 12, that, “Nigerians must not be relegated from being citizens of Nigeria by denying them a passport,” adding that, “We must get it right now… By the time the backlogs are cleared, Nigerians will start enjoying the efficient service of having their passports issued within two weeks upon application.”
Also in an interview on Channels TV, Tunji-Ojo said to fast-track passport issuance, his ministry would enter into a partnership with post offices, financial institutions, and others to serve as enrolment centres, and also work towards reducing the human factor in the passport application process, which “breeds corruption.”
Only a few other ministers have “hit the ground running” after their inauguration. They include Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike; Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi; Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu; Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr Simon Lalong; and Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri.
Most Nigerians will disagree with the tag of “performing Ministers” bestowed on these gentlemen and lady. Yet, their policy statements, actions and body language stand them out from the crowded field of ministers. Samplers: Mr Wike – nicknamed “Mr Project” as Governor of Rivers State (2015-2023) – was on the streets of Abuja the day after his swearing-in, inspecting projects, and making pronouncements, some with far-reaching ramifications. He said he’d revoke and/or demolish thousands of undeveloped plots, property built on green areas, and property owing ground rents.
Exhibiting his “talk-and-do” trademark, Wike’s test-run his demolition machine with multi-storey structures owned by “very influential Nigerians,” and by last week, the FCT administration had raked in about N2bn from ground rents, with a projection of N5bn to N7bn from that single source of revenue by December 2023.
Senator Umahi – also a “Mr Project” as Governor of Ebonyi State (2015-2023) – made the inspection of the Abuja-Lokoja-Benin highway in a punishing 14-hour vehicular journey – but done partly on foot due to the road’s dilapidation.
From interactions with contractors, stranded commuters and community people living on the highways, Umahi’s plotted how to efficiently and timely fix that road and others in similar shapes nationwide. That’s how a new policy of officially adopting cement and discarding literite for road construction was mooted.
Dr Edu – former Commissioner of Health in Cross River State and Women Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) – has shown that President Tinubu didn’t make mistakes in picking her as a female and a youth, and giving her the important ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to supervise.
She’s been all over the place – disaster and disaster-prone areas – meeting, and sharing in the experiences of the internally-displaced persons (IDPs) in their camps, and preparing and fine-tuning a template for bringing 15m Nigerians into the social safety net of the federal government.
Mr Lalong, an elected Senator, had his work cut out for him, as he’s thrust immediately into the den of angry organised labour unions up-in-arms against the government over President Tinubu’s “subsidy is gone” declaration in his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023, and floating of the Naira that combined to send the economy into a tailspin.
Lalong has only had some respite in the past week from labour’s series of agitation, but there’s potential for further confrontation if the government failed in the next two weeks to wrap up negotiations with the unions led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).
Coming at a time when prices of oil products, mostly for petrol, hit the roof aftermath of President Tinubu’s removal of subsidy, Dr Lokpobiri’s staked his reputation and that of the president on the December 2023 completion of rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt Refinery, and resumption of refining crude thereafter.
Lokpobiri’s paid several visits to the refinery, for progress assessment, and came out each time to restate that the revamping of the plant was going according to plan and schedule, and that the December deadline would be met. Nigerians pray, and hope that the money-guzzling refinery would be back to life as promised by the minister and President Tinubu!
One or two other ministers have proclaimed the directions they want to take their ministries. They include the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo (SAN); Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh; Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Chief Adegboyega Oyetola (former
Governor of Osun State); Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite; Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani; Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr Dele Alake; and Minister of Defence, Mr Mohammed Badaru Abubakar (former Governor of Jigawa State).
But most of the ministers appear to be sleeping on duty, or at home. It took quite awhile for them to resume duty from organising and/or attending parties to celebrate their appointments. Thus, many Nigerians are unsure if these appointtees had visited their ministries to introduce themselves to, and familiarise with the staff and workings of the ministries.
Particularly concerning are the following: Chief Adebayo Adelabu, who handles the crucial Ministry of Power – the most critical driver of the economy after petrol and foreign exchange; the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr Mohammed Idris, supposedly the spokesperson for the government; Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman; Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate; and Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari.
One thread, though, runs through the pronouncements and actions of the “stand-out ministers,” and that’s to invoke President Tinubu’s name to drive the process. Often, you hear the ministers say: “That’s what the President wants,” “That’s the instruction of Mr President,” “The President said I should carry out this plan,” “Mr President wants quick results.”
The ministers aren’t coy deploying the President’s name, so long as it yields the necessary results – and it seems to be doing the “magic” afterall! So, the “slumbering” ministers should wake up, adopt a similar strategy, and add value to the lives of Nigerians, who hurt from government’s twin economic policies of subsidy removal and floating of the Naira!
To succeed in his ambitious “Renewed Hope” agenda, President Tinubu needs to encourage the likes of Mr Tunji-Ojo to implement government’s policies and programmes, and execute and timeously deliver on projects and services to meet the people’s needs.

  • Ministry of Agriculture partners IFAD to strengthen food security

Ministry of Agriculture partners IFAD to strengthen food security

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, has expressed his readiness to partner with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), to strengthen food security in the country.

Kyari stated this when the Country Representative of IFAD, Mrs Dede Ekoue, visited him on Wednesday in Abuja, a statement by Mrs Anthonia Eremah, Chief Information Officer, Ministry of Agriculture, said.

“Since 1985, IFAD has been Nigeria’s trusted partner for reducing rural poverty.

“President Bola Tinubu is committed to his Renewed Hope Agenda to implement programmes and policies that will enhance food security, job creation and poverty eradication.

“To achieve these, the President declared a state of emergency on food security,” the minister said.

He thanked IFAD for its support and opportunities presented to the country, saying that Nigeria was faced with challenges, and that the door was open for contributions and assistance to ensure food availability for the populace.

Kyari said four out of the eight point agenda of President Tinubu was devoted to food security.

The minister said that the ministry had a critical role to play to achieve the agenda, adding that the country’s agricultural yield was low due to insecurity, flood and climate change.

He stressed that the country needed all the assistance it could muster from its international partners.

In her remark, Ekoue expressed delight with the cooperation between the ministry and IFAD at different fora as well as the country’s commitment towards food security.

She recalled that Nigeria’s cooperation with IFAD dated back to 1985 with support to small-holder farmers, which gave rise to food security.

Ekoue said her visit was to renew IFAD’s commitment to food security, adding that it had developed a new cooperation strategy that would guide its investment and cooperation.

She said that opportunities available to Nigeria included strengthening technology and mechanisation, strengthening women participation, integrating animal husbandry and strengthening the private sector contributions to food systems, among others.

  • Young CEOs seek creation of ministry for young entrepreneurs

Young CEOs seek creation of ministry for young entrepreneurs

The Young CEO Initiative has called for creation of a ministry for young entrepreneurs to stimulate the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria.

Founder of the initiative, Mr Aigbe Omorege, made the call on Monday during a news conference in Benin, Edo.

Omorege, who was joined by other members of the initiative, said creating such a ministry had become necessary in order to relate directly to young entrepreneurs and drive the spirit of entrepreneurship for which the country was known.

According to him, young entrepreneurs employ the highest number of people, thereby generating the highest amount of revenue as far as Nigeria’s gross domestic product (GDP) is concerned.

These efforts, he said, had helped to reduce unemployment to a significant level.

“Also, we want the president to instruct the CBN (Central Bank of Nigeria) to make public the currency swap agreements between the bank and Republic of China’s Central Bank so that our people can take advantage of this.

“Remember, few days ago, a human rights activist, Femi Falana, came up with the revelation that there was a currency swap agreement between the two countries that would help our people going to do business in China not to source for dollars, but to exchange naira for China currency.

“If we had known this early enough or it was made public, it could have helped to reduce the stress of sourcing for dollars,” he said.

Omorege, who is the Chief Executive Officer, Intercontinental Paint, urged President Bola Tinubu to, as a matter of urgency, create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, particularly in the areas of clearing.

“The situation at the clearing point or the entry point, as far as the clearing system is concerned, is frustrating to us.

“The high cost of clearing has also increased the cost of commodities in the market, especially for those of us in the manufacturing sector.

“You can source for dollars at a very high cost, clear your goods at a very high cost but it is the common man on the street who will suffer for it.

“We also ask that government subsidises dollars for young entrepreneurs who go into importation of raw materials for manufacturing.

“This will help to crash the cost of commodities in the market,” said the initiative’s founder.

The young entrepreneur expressed the regret that many enterprises belonging to members of the initiative had folded up in recent time due to the prevailing economic situation.

He called on governments at all levels to declare a state of emergency in the economies that were within their purviews so as to encourage the youngsters contributing to the nation’s economy.

Omorege, however, commended the president for the steps taken so far to cushion the adverse impacts of the present economic situation in the country.

While stating that the palliatives rolled out for SMEs were in order, he, nonetheless, called for the inclusion of Edo in the number of state to be considered.

Change your mindset, to work – Humanitarian Minister tells NEDC

    Wevole Ezin, Calabar.

The Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu has told the Management and Staff of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to change their mindset and attitude to work.

Dr. Edu who gave the warning while addressing the management of the Commission at its Headquarters in Maiduguri said it would no longer be business as usual.

She urged them to work with a strategy that will help to deliver the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which is aimed at reducing poverty and humanitarian crises in the region.

While frowned at the attitude to work of the Commission’s top management staff, she said only collaboration and partnership will help the Commission to deliver on its mandate.

According to her, a situation where various departments don’t share knowledge or collaborate, leading to difficulties in achieving short, medium, and long-term goals, saying it won’t work under the Leadership of President Bola Tinubu. “It is a team work. We must all collaborate and stop the duplication and wastages.

“Enough of the joke. Working in silos and poor coordination will not give Nigeria results. We can’t continue with business as usual. Please let us make U-turn leave politics of division and face the job. Nigerians are waiting.

“President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima are working together on how to reduce poverty and humanitarian crises in Nigeria, and this Commission is very strategic to the people of North Eastern part of Nigeria to drive the agenda. “You must, therefore, fasten your belt and be goal-oriented. The only thing I want to see and hear is the result, and teamwork is key to achieving this, “she stressed.

The Minister challenged the Management of the Commission to come up with strategic plans on how to lift people of the region out of poverty and humanitarian crises. Providing durable solutions and capital projects that will lead to development and poverty alleviation
“I believe the management team in this hall can bring about the much-needed change to enable us to see a different result. “I challenge you to jettison the conventional ways of doing things, the era of politics is over, so please, give us results, sit down on the roundtable to implement the master plan of the Commission aligning it with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President”

Dr. Edu appealed to some of the development partners in attendance, including UNFPA, UNICEF, IOM, and WFO, to reprioritize the Governments mandate and key into the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Executive Director, Administration, and Finance of the Commission, Dr. Garba Abubakar Illiya, who responded on behalf of the management team, assured the Minister that the message of collaboration and partnership was well received by them, saying they will henceforth work as a team to achieve sucess.

He promised the Commission would work with the Minister to enable speedy implementation of its ten-year Development and Stabilization master plan.

8.3m persons in need of humanitarian interventions in North/East – Minister

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, says no fewer than 8.3 million Nigerians are in dire need of humanitarian assistance in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.

Edu said the figure is part of the total 16 million Nigerians affected by various humanitarian crises, with the three states worse hit.

The minister said this in a statement by her Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Mr Rasheed Zubair, on Sunday in Abuja.

She said aside from the North-East, Benue in the North/Central had been tagged the capital of humanitarian crises in Nigeria by United Nations.
“We have a huge task on our hands, as we speak now, over 16m Nigerians are affected by humanitarian crises either man-made or natural disaster with over 8.3m of them based in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.
”Several states in the North Central; and others spread across the country.

“The UN said Benue had become the humanitarian need capital in Nigeria, and as such, a lot of work needs to be done in the humanitarian angle,” she said.

She added that “One of the agendas of Tinubu administration is to ensure that poverty is alliviated in Nigeria in line with the SDG goal one.
“The president is coming up with a very robust program to lift Nigerians out of poverty.

“Our work is to see how we can get those in poverty out and those at the verge of getting into poverty increase to social safety to protect them from falling into poverty.
“In a couple of weeks, we will be fully launching into this plans to take out over 136 million Nigerians out of poverty as implementation has started to help cushion the effects of the fuel subsidy removal.”

She said the ministry had come up with innovative ways of thorough verification of the social register for accuracy and transparency.

“We are bringing innovations to ensure transparency in Conditional Cash Transfer by carry out a thorough verification of the social register, validate and then expand it to accommodate more persons.

“We will be working with the World Bank while seeking approval from the President to begin the Conditional Cash Transfer to Nigerians” she said.
The minister promised to upgrade, rejig and expand the social safety net programme to accommodate more people through a transparent process.

“We want to increase the Social Safety Net for Nigerians in a transparent manner by counting the numbers together just as we counted COVID-19 cases using a digitalised system.

“We are very conscious of the fact that Mr President’s passion and true intentions are to ensure that we can lift Nigerians out of poverty.
“Party politics is over, now is time for governance, President Tinubu is a president for everyone irrespective of political party,” she said.

She therefore assured Nigerians that the ministry would soon come up with accurate and acceptable social register to curb the challenge associated with disparity in the register.

”Ministry would soon come up with a more acceptable Social Register, one that will be verified, validated.

” It will also be expanded to include those who should be there while taking off those who no longer belong within that bracket.

”We will also work with all tiers of government as well as various communities to identify persons eligible for the scheme.” she added.

Ministerial list: Stop distracting Tinubu’s CoS, CSOs tell political detractors

…as coalition of 92 CSOs pass vote of confidence on Gbajabiamila

A coalition of 92 Civil Society Organisations under the aegis of Centre for Credible Leadership and Citizens Awareness has condemned moves made by some political elements in the country to steer clear of President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila over political appointments.

Apparently disturbed by the plethora of attacks on the CoS, the coalition passed a vote of confidence on him giving vivid details as to why he deserves to remain the president’s man.

Convener of the coalition, Dr Gabriel Nwambu who read a press statement titled:’Orchestrated, Malicious And Unfounded Attacks on Rt Hon Femi Gbajabiamila’,on behalf of the group stated that:

“We have noted with dismay the last few weeks that the media space had been thrown agog with all manner of falsehood designed to mutilate the integrity of the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, malign him and portray him in bad light before Nigerians and the President and Commander in Chief, President Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

“Gbajabiamila has come under acerbic attacks from certain political actors who are spreading falsehood against him just because they missed out on the ministerial and other lists.

“They are blaming him for their inability to occupy appointive office at the moment, even though it is the president acting in consultation with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the governors, and other key stakeholders in the polity, that appointed ministers and board chairmen.

“These people do not care for the fact that positions come at the time destined, and that clearly, everybody cannot be a minister at same time.

“However, Nigerians are not buying the falsehood, and we have seen socio-cultural groups like the Arewa Youth Forum and Ohanaeze Youth Movement call on Nigerians to ignore the accusations thrown at Gbajabiamila over the constitution of boards of government agencies.

“They have appealed to Nigerians to ignore the detractors, saying that the Chief of Staff is well experienced and capable of carrying out his duties.

“Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila’s antecedents as a public servant with a sterling record and a stickler for truth, fairness, and due process would entertain the absurdities ascribed to him for a second.

“As a Surulere, Lagos-born politician cum technocrat, he comes to the present assignment fully qualified, having been in the House of Reps for two decades (2003-2023), boasting a record of unblemished service.

“As a lawmaker par excellence, he held many sensitive positions, including that of Leader of the Opposition, and he used the position of Speaker in the last dispensation to build unity and love across political tendencies, leaving imperishable legacies on the sands of time.

“Throughout his sojourn in public service, Gbajabiamila has been a very close and loyal disciple of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Recall that while serving as speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, it took the intervention of Femi Gbajabiamila to end the protected and unending ASUU strike of University lecturers in Nigeria.

” As a chief of staff to Mr. President, he had participated actively on resolving the disagreement between Government and Labour just this year alone. As Speaker, he was a bridge builder par excellence, a force for competence, integrity, and people-centered lawmaking. Gbajabiamila commanded such a level of respect from his colleagues that he was often referred to as a Speaker of Speakers and a leader of leaders.

“He welded together new and old members of the Green Chamber, many of whom transited to the Senate while some emerged as ministers, placing Project Nigeria above partisan pursuits.

“In appointing Gbajabiamila as Chief of Staff, President Tinubu took his track records and the actualization of his Renewed Hope Agenda into consideration. The National Assembly is a strategic organ of the democratic state, and as such, it needs somebody who understands the dynamics and workings of that arm of government, which Gbajabiamila does as a former Speaker and lawmaker of two decades standing.

“Ladies and gentlemen, let us allow Gbajabiamila to do his job in peace. Casting needless aspersions on him won’t cut it, and it’s too early to seek to derail the Tinubu administration with blatant falsehood. The media should be wary of the desperadoes planting negative stories against an innocent, patriotic public officer. Fairness is more than a slogan.

“In all these, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has remained focused and undaunted. As Nigerian citizens, we must all work together to ensure that the Tinubu administration achieves its “Renewed Hope Agenda” for the betterment of all Nigerians.

“Consequently by this medium, as a Coalition of Civil Society Organizations, we hereby unequivocally pass a vote confidence on the Chief of Staff to Mr. President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.

“As a man with the requisite character, capacity, competence and qualification for the office of the Chief of Staff to Mr. President, we hereby encourage you not to be distracted as you continue with your good works in serving the nation and humanity.
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
    Thank you.
    Signed:

    DR. NWAMBU GABRIEL,
    For the Coalition.

Execute policies to turn around economy – Tinubu orders ministers

President Bola Tinubu on Monday ordered members of his cabinet to execute policies that would turn around the Nigerian economy.

Tinubu gave the Federal Executive Council (FEC) members a marching order to marshal the revival of the economy and make life more bearable for the people.

The maiden council meeting he presided over at the Council Chambers of the presidential villa in Abuja, considered the “Roadmap for the economy” presented by the minister of finance and coordinating minister for the economy, Wale Edun.

Speaking on the issue at the post-FEC press briefing, Edun said the council agreed that the economy is not where it should be.

He said FEC examined eight priority areas and identified targets to deliver in the next three years.

Edun affirmed that President Tinubu has charged the ministers to roll out policy and programmes to turn around the economy.
