PALLIATIVES! Tinubu gives 1,200 bags to ministers as Alake promises to give only the aged

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, has said that the 1200 bags of rice made available to him by the Presidency as palliatives for grassroots will be channelled to only the aged in the state.

Alake made the disclosure in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori,
made available in Ado Ekiti on Sunday.

The minister said, “Following the decision of the Presidency to respond to the yearnings of the Nigerian people to make more food available at the grassroots, 1,200 bags were made available to each minister to further supplement the established channels of distribution such as state governments and civic organisations.”

He said that the 1200 bags made available to him “will be channelled to the aged only”, adding, “We need to reach out to our aged fathers and mothers at times like this to demonstrate the Omoluabi values of taking care of the old in the community.

“In the spirit of inclusion, it is important that we channel this intervention to mainly elderly citizens who do not have the strength to compete for welfare goods such as these at the established centres. We have taken their inventory and we are delivering to them.

Subsequent interventions will target other segments of the populace such as widows, orphans, persons living with disabilities and students in higher institutions of learning,” Alake said.

He enjoined all public-spirited Ekiti people to lend a hand to the needy, adding that all hands must be on deck to support all efforts to rid the state of hunger and poverty.

See Edu’s probe as ‘red flag’, Don tells ministers, other political appointees

A don, Prof Jonah Onuoha, says the probe of the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs Betta Edu, over alleged financial misappropriation should serve as a ‘red flag’ to other members of President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.

Onuoha, a former Head, Department of Political Science, DFXUniversity of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka, said this in an interview on Tuesday.

The don, while reacting to Edu’s recent grilling by Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), said that Tinubu’s action against Edu was a sign that other cabinet members should tread with caution, as it was no longer business as usual.

“I commend Mr President for allowing Edu to be probed by EFCC over alleged financial misappropriation, less than six months he appointed her as minister.

“By this bold step, Tinubu has raised a ‘red flag’ to other cabinet members that his administration has zero tolerance for bribery and corruption.

“The bane of our democracy in the past was corruption, financial misappropriations and diversion of public funds to private pockets,” he said.

The political scientist noted that Edu’s probe should serve as deterrent to other ministers and political appointees to either shun corruption or be ready to face the consequences.

“With this, Tinubu’s administration has started well in the fight against corruption and if he continues like this, his tenure will restore the confidence of Nigerians in governance,” he said.

Onuoha advised ministers and other political appointees to see their appointments as an opportunity to serve their fatherland and contribute their own quota to national development rather than an opportunity to amass wealth illegally.

“We should all put patriotism and national interest first whenever we are called to serve our fatherland.

“Nigeria is the only country we can call our own; we are they people that will make Nigeria great.

“We should always remember that there is no place like home, as we will be treated as foreigners in any other country we find ourselves,” Onuoha, who is also the Director, UNN Centre for American Studies said.
