    Five feared dead, six rescued in Kano boat mishap

    A boat mishap, on Tuesday evening, in Bagwai Local Government Area of Kano State has left no fewer than five passengers dead while six others were rescued.

    It was gathered that the incident happened at the Bagwai dam around 5 pm when the persons boarded the boat with an engine from Badau village to Bagwai town and in the process capsized.

    The Information Officer, Tasiu Jibo Dawanau confirmed the sad development to newsmen.

    Dawanau said the team of local swimmers, firemen, NSCDC, police and the Local government Chairman were currently on a search and rescue mission at the dam.

    According to him, “As of now, we are yet to ascertain how many persons were involved.

    “The local swimmers, fire service, NSCDC, police and Local government Chairman were currently at the riverside on search and rescue mission.

    “So far, six persons were rescued and five persons lost their lives. The corpses have been evacuated to the Bagiwa General hospital.

    “Searching is ongoing but by tomorrow, we should be able to ascertain the figure of casualties involved in the mishap,” Dawanau however said.

    Meanwhile, unconfirmed sources said the incident involved about 30 persons out of which 10 persons lost their lives.

    Boat mishap kills 13 in Sokoto, Tambuwal, Wamakko mourn

    The Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, and Chairman, Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, have mourned the death of 13 people in a boat mishap on Thursday.

    The victims were said to be travelling from Doruwa to Ginga when the boat capsized.

    The Chairman of the Shagari Local Government Council, Alhaji Aliyu Dantine Shagari, said eight of the victims were married women and the remaining five were children and elderly men.

    He revealed that investigations are still ongoing as to find out what caused the mishap.

    The chairman noted that all their bodies had been recovered and buried in line with the Islamic rites.

    The state governor who condoled with the people on Friday promised to provide them with motorised boats and life jackets.

    Senator Wamakko in a statement expressed shock at the death of the people and lamented that it happened barely nine days after the deaths of over one hundred people in a similar tragedy in Warrah Local Government of Kebbi State.

    He prayed to the Almighty Allah to grant the deceased persons Aljannat Firdaus.

    The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has declared 156 persons missing in the boat mishap which occurred in Kebi State on Wednesday.

    Mr Yusuf Birma, NIWA area manager in Yauri Kebbi State, disclosed this, adding that the accident was caused by overloading.

    Birma said rescue operation is still ongoing but added that four people have been confirmed dead, 20 rescued alive while 156 people are still missing.

    “The boat is carrying 180 passengers with 30 Bajaj motorcycles. The victims were going to a market in Malele in Borgu local government area of Niger state from Kebbi and the incident happened just one hour into their trip.

    “We are still rescuing the victims; the mishap occurred as a result of overloading. The boat capacity is not up 180 passengers it carried, as we speak, only 20 people have been rescued alive, four dead confirmed while the remaining 156 people are still missing and they are believed to be underwater,” he told reporters.

    Speaking further on the cause of the mishap, Birma added that most of the boats are old and weak.

    “The boat involved is a wooden boat which are is old and are very weak but this people will not listen when we sensitised them to reduce the number of passengers they are carrying with the boat, ” he said.

    The Niger state emergency management agency also confirmed the incident adding that it didn’t happened in their state.

  • Pandemonium as five die in Lagos boat mishap

    At least five people died in a boat accident in Lagos Wednesday evening.

    According to eye witness accounts, the incident happened at about 5.57 p.m.

    The general manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Adesina Tiamiyu, who confirmed the deaths, said the cause of the incident was still unknown.

    Findings revealed that a 20-capacity passenger boat belonging to Blue sea capsized mid-sea enroute Ikorodu from Lagos Island.

    Bodies of victims have since been deposited at the morgue at Ikorodu general hospital.

    The deceased, whose identities still remain unknown, include four women and a man.

    Meanwhile, five other persons were rescued after the incident.

    Recovery efforts still on-going at time of this report.

  • Six dead, 12 missing in Kebbi boat mishap

    The Chief Press Secretary to the Kebbi State Governor, Abubakar Dakingari, said on Wednesday that six traders died while 12 persons were missing after a boat mishap on River Niger in Shanga Local Government Area of the state.

    Mr. Dakingari made the confirmation on Wednesday in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Birnin Kebbi.

    “Two canoes were carrying more than 78 passengers, six persons have been confirmed dead while 12 are still missing and over 60 were rescued,” he said.

    He said Governor Atiku Bagudu of the Kebbi State had directed the traditional rulers, local government chairmen, Nigerian Inland Waterways’ officials and Marine Police to prohibit night travels by boats and canoes.

    According to Mr. Dakingari , the governor gave the directive while on a condolence visit to the relatives of the victims in the area.

    NAN reports that the incident happened following head-on collision of two canoes carrying traders and their goods on Tuesday at about 8:30 p.m. in Barikin Sakace in Shanga Local Government Area.

    A resident of the area, Abubakar Maleje, told NAN that it was a terrible scene as the traders were brought out from the river.

    “I have seen six dead bodies and others are still missing in the river while search and rescue mission is still on by the authorities concerned.

    “Most of the passengers were travelling in the night inspite of the dangers of river voyage in the night.

    “ You can see the local boat operators over loading their boats with goods and people,’’ he said.

    The Executive Director of the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Abbas Kamba, also confirmed the incident.

    NAN also recalls that in September 2017, no fewer than 53 traders were reported dead in a boat mishap on River Niger in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi.
