Why I relocated my office to MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja – Enoh

The Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Enoh, on Thursday explained why he relocated his office to the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

He said he wanted to personally supervise what was going on in the sports centre and ensure that things were put in the right place.

“I did a tour of MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja, and I insisted that instead of having my office at the Secretariat, my office as Sports Development minister has to be at the stadium.

“I have taken that decision already, I have an assignment to make the ministry work and we have to make it work. MKO Abiola Stadium is where we have 90 per cent of the departments of sports.

“The stadium is where we have all the federations’ secretariats, athletes and footballers. For the purpose of coordination and to keep a watchful eye, it is imperative that my office is at the stadium.

“I don’t mind the challenges; what matters to me is the gain in the sports sector. I have also issued a memo to the permanent secretary that the remaining sports departments should be at the stadium,” he said.

Enoh restated that his main focus would be development of sports and how sports could be used for the development of the country.

“The focus as a sports minister is going to be in two folds; one is the development of sports, the grassroots development, infrastructure and amenities at the grassroots level where the real talents are domiciled.

“I want to see those talents from Ajegunle developed into elite sportsmen. We want to go to those places where there are fewer opportunities, or may not get the opportunity to express themselves.

“I want to provide, like a basketball court for those in the hinterland and others. A lot of times, the great boxers are not produced in the high brow areas but in the local environments.

“I want to provide these things and not just saying it, and at the end of my tenure, we want to count tangible things that have given us social inclusion which will translate to sports development,” he said.

According to reports, as part of his ongoing efforts to assess the state of major sports facilities in the country, Enoh inspected the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, on Thursday.

He started his inspection from the stadium complex, where he visited the National Institute of Sports, the boxing complex, mainbowl of the stadium, sports medical centre, indoor sports hall and other facilities.

He also inspected the Games Village hostels, Legacy Pitch, Power House, as well as the courts for different sports.

  • June 12: Tinubu told to declare late MKO Abiola President-elect

June 12: Tinubu told to declare late MKO Abiola President-elect

President Bola Tinubu has been called upon to dispense justice on June 12 by declaring the late Chief M. K. O Abiola as president-elect.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Accord Party, Lagos State Chapter, made the call in a statement by Mr Dele Oladeji, State Chairman of the party to mark Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

Mr Oladeji said the party wanted Tinubu to declare MKO as president-elect of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election so as to bring an end to a long lingering injustice against Nigerians.

Oladeji noted that the “June 12 Day” remained a blight and  watershed on the checkered democratic history of Nigeria and Africa.

“We request a release of the official result of June 12, a declaration of late MKO as the president-elect and presentation of insignia office and necessary compensation to his  family.”

The chairman stated that the requests would bring an end to long lingering injustice and correct a devastating social and electoral bills against Nigerians and Nigeria.

“This requests will not be for only late MKO Abiola but for all Nigerians and the world at large, who will feel a huge relief.

“It will also restore their faith and hope in the country afresh.

“At this time, the June 12 Day should start to be celebratory like the Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“Also, it should stop being a day we keep mourning the injustice, loss to lives and property and the democratic rape of June 12 debacle,” he said.

The chairman reiterated that a fulfillment of the party’s request would shore up  renewed hope in the democratic system of Nigeria and Africa.

He explained that it would bring a lot of maturity and faith in the democratic system in Nigeria.

“It will  build trust, faith and hope in the government of Tinubu, develop and foster rapid growth of the judicial and justice system and process in Nigeria.”

Oladeji said this was the right to bring Justice to June 12 because a few of the active actors are still alive.

“Ex-president Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida who annulled the election is still alive, Prof. Maurice Iwu, the third  INEC chairman who conducted  the election, Prof. Wole Soyinka and Mr  Dele Momodu.

“Others are Dr Kayode Fayemi and President Bola Tinubu l, who were  major actors and prominent agitators in the June 12  debacle.

“Tinubu was not only a victim and active actor but also went on exile with other like- minds, members and leadership of NADECO,” he said.

The chairman said the party looked forward to the official announcement of the result of the June 12, 1993 election and declaration of the winner while congratulating the President on the eventual victory of the Feb. 25, presidential election.

“We wish the President and Nigerians a successful tenure and a prosperous reign.”

Recall that former President Muhammadu Buhari on June 6, 2018, declared June 12 as Nigeria’s democracy day instead of May 29 in honour of late Chief M.K.O Abiola.

Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election died in detention for an alleged treason.

The declaration followed many years of agitations by civil society groups that Abiola must be immortalized.

According to Buhari, the change was to remind all Nigerians of one free election after which the presumed winner along with Nigerians were denied their rights and their choices.

  • Tinubu is no Abiola and Atiku is no Tofa – By Babajide Balogun

Tinubu is no Abiola and Atiku is no Tofa – By Babajide Balogun

    By Babajide Balogun

The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has apparently run into a cul-de-sac, with less than two weeks to the February 25 election. All his gimmicks and subterranean machinations have come to a grinding halt.

So, they are now opening a new frontier by likening Tinubu to MKO Abiola and Atiku Abubakar (the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party as Bashir Tofa. Well, it has failed even before it started.

Tinubu’s thinking is that being from the Southwest like the late Abiola, and his running mate Kashim Shettima coming from the Northeastern state of Borno, just like Babagana Kingibe, he will be able to get the votes from the North, especially Muslims. But there are so many reasons why Tinubu is no Abiola, just as 1993 cannot be the same as 2023.

Indeed, Atiku cannot be put in the same political bracket as Tofa. First of all, Abiola’s story as that of an only surviving child of his parents who fought his way out of poverty resonated well with many Nigerians. And as a successful accountant cum businessman, Abiola’s philanthropic disposition earned him a place in the heart of many Nigerians.

He granted scholarships to many indigent students, built places of worship for people of all faiths, helped people without any recourse to their ethnic, religious or regional backgrounds and set up industries and ventures – from Abiola Babes Football Club to Abiola Airlines and more – where he provided employment opportunities to many Nigerians.

Abiola was able to secure the ticket of the then Social Democratic Party (SDP) by making his movement appealing to Nigerians from all walks of life. He built bridges of unity across the country. Even his eventual Muslim-Muslim ticket was more coincidental than political, because Babagana Kingibe contested against him for the SDP ticket but lost to him. So he was made to be on the ticket in an effort to keep the party united.

It could have been any other politician. Abiola did not use his wealth to intimidate or compromise anyone. He did not leave any room for people to doubt his sincerity.

Tinubu, on the other hand, is completely different. Apart from the controversy surrounding his health, birth and educational history, Tinubu was comfortable concentrating all his energies on Lagos and other parts of the Southwest.

At a point, he was seeing himself as the heir-apparent to late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and the champion of regional politics. It was his presidential ambition that showed that he was neither a sincere Awoist nor the national figure he is now claiming to be. He only needed to use the South West as a bargaining chip, which he used in bringing strange bedfellows to form the APC, giving President Muhammadu Buhari some presence outside his northern stronghold to become president.

To clinch the APC presidential ticket, Tinubu is said to have used his questionable wealth to reach out to some northern governors who worked for his emergence as the party’s flag-bearer. In the end, most of those that contested against him were blackmailed or intimidated into quitting the race.

Many of them are still nursing their wound, which explains why they have shunned the party’s campaign activities. The only success recorded by Tinubu is that of elevating godfatherism in politics to a new high. But “a leopard never changes its spots”. Tinubu has yet to outgrow his ethnic champion status.

Since the commencement of campaign activities, he had always retreated to the South West anytime he felt threatened by the chieftains of his own party (If his own party chieftains do not trust him, why should Nigerians?). It was in Ogun State that he made the infamous ‘Emi lo kan (it is my turn) remark. Also, because he was more interested in appealing to the sentiment of the people, he would speak Yoruba anytime he was in their midst.

That scenario played out on more than one occasion. Unlike in Abiola’s case, Tinubu’s resort to a Muslim running mate was dictated by self-interest. It has nothing to do with advancing the cause of Islam or Muslims. He certainly cannot do that when he can’t even recite Surah al-Fatiḥah, the first chapter of the Qur’an, as many have observed.

Rather than win the hearts of Muslims with this stunt, it has since backfired with many now doubting his claim to being one of them. Knowing how to recite Fatihah is obligatory for Muslims because no prayer is ever complete without it. The move failed to elicit the sort of frenzy envisaged.

Tinubu is now relying on only the northern governors on the platform of the APC to achieve his ambition. He has not been able to reach the grassroots in the north who are the actual voters. The APC candidate should listen to the advice of Senator Shehu Sani who told him not to trust northern governors and politicians because the majority of the common people in the North do not support his touted presidential ambition.

These northern governors are more interested in self-preservation than Tinubu’s ambition. They have mismanaged their states and the people can’t wait to get rid of them. Yet they are the ones selling false hope to Tinubu. A Tinubu presidency can only divide the people further.

However, Atiku seems to have more in common with Abiola because he was also an only child who learned to take care of himself and to fight his own battles from an early age. Atiku has also built bridges with Nigerians of different backgrounds; he has been providing job opportunities to Nigerians, and offering scholarships to many indigent students. In 2017, 15 of the Chibok school girls who escaped from their Boko Haram abductors were awarded scholarships to attend the American University of Nigeria Academy, AUN, Yola.

The scholarships were awarded to the 15 girls by Atiku, who is the founder of AUN, along with some individuals.

Atiku, who has the requisite experience to turn things for the better in the country, has also listened to the yearnings for Nigeria’s unity and participatory politics by coming up with a balanced ticket, picking Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate.

Okowa, who will be completing his second term on May 29, is one politician that commands respect among his people. He is without any baggage. In fact, many have described the choice of Okowa as not only strategically representative but one that will also unite the party and the people. If it is about record and pedigree, there should be no debate.

But still Atiku will rather use his manifesto – not just story – to convince Nigerians. His exciting campaigns and the huge turnouts have made him the candidate to beat. Many have judged Atiku’s manifesto the most coherent, realistic and convincing of all the manifestos put forward by all the 18 presidential candidates.

He has laid out his plans, including the things he set to achieve in his first 100 days in office once elected as president. He has promised to work towards ceding more powers to the states to enable them to do more for the people, in line with the yearnings for the restructuring of the country.

But in what can be described as an insult, Tinubu has no plan for the north whose votes he is desperately seeking to enable him to accomplish his desire to be the occupant of Aso Rock.

This much was revealed by Naja’atu Mohammed, who should know because she was the APC’s Campaign Director on Civil Societies. According to Naja’atu, the APC flag bearer told her at a meeting in London that he had no blueprint for tackling insecurity in the North. He is said to be waiting to get elected first before deciding on what to do for the region, despite its numerous challenges.

The average Nigerian voter, whether in the south or north, has come of age. We are in the era of one man, one vote, not one godfather deciding for millions of people. As they say “Once beaten, twice shy”. The people have seen how the APC lied their way to power and made a mess of it.

They know the difference between a hurriedly packaged lie and a truth that has stood the test of time. The difference between Atiku and Tinubu is like that between light and darkness, and no one in his right senses will choose the latter ahead of the former.

“Contrary to the defamatory statement in the print and electronic media as well as online media, I never assaulted my former orderly neither did I instruct anyone else to do so.

“Such an incident never took place in my house as there are CCTV cameras all over the street surroundings to debunk the claim.

“Contrary to the allegations, I have never asked the former orderly to carry out any domestic chores as sophisticated robot machines like Alexa are installed in the palace.

“I was never a suspect but a victim of a frame up by the defendants,’’ she said.

She added that that the acts of the defendants were libelous, scandalous , slanderous and defamatory by calling her unprintable names both in the conventional and social media.

  • I will win 2023 presidential election – Abiola boasts

I will win 2023 presidential election – Abiola boasts

Kola Abiola, presidential candidate of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) has expressed confidence that he will win the 2023 presidential election.

Abiola, who is the first child of late Chief MKO Abiola, acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election, said this at the launch of the party’s manifesto for 2023 in Abuja on Saturday.

Speaking at the event, Abiola said his party has no immediate plans to form an alliance with any political party for the 2023 general election while expressing optimism that the PRP would win the presidential election by a landslide.

“I can’t see any right away. You have to run the race before you start thinking of an alliance. We have a very strong grassroots network. We have been campaigning at the grassroots. We will soon begin our national campaign.

“We have a wide reach. We are in all the Local Government Areas of the country and we have 711 candidates nationwide. That is what we require to run a successful campaign. We are a national party that will make a big difference in the election,” he said.

Abiola dismissed insinuations that he was riding on his late father’s legacy.

“It is very unfortunate and ignorant of people to say that. I’m a man of my own right,” he said.

Alhaji Falalu Bello, the PRP National Chairman, described Abiola as an intellectually capable candidate.

“Our presidential candidate is physically fit and capable to contest alongside other candidates,” he said.
Bello faulted allegations that the candidates paid for various positions, saying it wasn’t true.

“We in PRP, whoever had the mandate to contest whether presidential or gubernatorial, did not spend a kobo that he gave to the party to be nominated for any position.

“In terms of principle, there is no party better than PRP; we have been tested; we had formed government in Kaduna and Kano states,” Bello said.

  • Professor Zainab who assaulted policewoman in Abuja is MKO Abiola’s widow, Chief in Niger Delta- Report

Professor Zainab who assaulted policewoman in Abuja is MKO Abiola’s widow, Chief in Niger Delta- Report

The academic Prof. Zainab Abiola, who allegedly assaulted her police orderly, Inspector Teju Moses, for refusing to do menial jobs, has been revealed to be a widow of the late politician, Chief  Moshood Kashimawo Olawale, aka MKO Abiolareport.

Zainab, who is the Chairperson of the Akasoba Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution (ACPCR), holds a chieftaincy title as the Akasoba of Kalabari land in the Niger Delta.

Late MKO Abiola and Zainab were said to have gotten married under the 1837 matrimonial acts in England and Wales.

Recall that the Inspector general of police, IGP, Usman Baba, has ordered the prosecution of the Mbaise-born academic (Prof. Zainab), an Abuja-based lawyer, for assaulting the police orderly.

The statement said, “The IGP has directed the express prosecution of the arrested suspects who are currently in Police custody, as the preliminary investigation shows overwhelming evidence of culpability on the part of the Professor and her domestic staff.

“The IGP has equally tasked the investigative team to ensure that the fleeing suspect is arrested and made to face the wrath of the law.”

The Police disclosed that the incident occurred on Tuesday following the refusal of the orderly, Inspector Teju Moses to carry out menial and domestic chores at her residence, which contravenes her professional ethics.

Force PRO, Olumuyiwa Adejobi said, “Assault on woman police: We have arrested the woman professor and her staff since the date of the incident, the matter is getting the necessary attention it deserves. FCT Command will charge d case to court asap. It is condemned in totality. We will still update you shortly.”

Zainab was shown in a viral video on Wednesday where her orderly, in a pool of blood accused her of instructing her maids to beat her up, and her men to kill her.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Abiola was the winner of June 12, 1993, presidential election annulled by the Ibrahim Babangida-led military junta.

On June 12, 2022, Zainab wrote a public letter to her late husband. In her self-acclaimed role as an activist, she highlighted that the Nigerian government had recognized him as the winner of the 1993 presidential election and June 12 had been proclaimed as Democracy Day.

The professor wrote in the letter, “My Darling MKO, Wa Ingi Di of Kalabari Kingdom, Bashorun, the 14th Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land who by the special grace of God and the Presidential Fiat of President Buhari, you are now an ex-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“From this Terra Mater, I send you felicitations as you and my loving parents with whom you shared the same birthday, continue to play music in the heavenly orchestra for the Daeus in Caelo, better than you played on earth.

“As you recall, on June 12 1993 you won the freest and fairest presidential election ever in the country and you were given the Sacred Mandate of a heterogeneous conglomerate called Nigeria. The elections were subsequently annulled and Aare MKO Abiola was held under lock and key, incommunicado, for several agonizing years.

“In fighting for the actualization of the people’s mandate you and other great lovers of democracy laid down your lives that democracy might thrive and for Nigeria to be free from Military dictatorship. Aare Onakakanfo and his fellow patriots were cut down in a meaningless battle of egos. Your precious blood was shed to water the tree of democracy and the angels cried out for Justice.

“It might interest you to know that June 12 has been enshrined as Democracy Day in Nigeria in your honour by the present regime. It might also interest you to know that some state governors have cancelled this democratic celebration due to the spade of macabre terrorism and bloodletting in the country.

“How come the great military that once ruled this great continent cannot defeat a rag-tag group of marauding murderers masquerading as martyrs? Whatever the political permutations the country’s ills appear to be growing in leaps and bounds. Terrorism rules the day closely followed by corruption escorted by segregation, victimisation and oppression whilst hunger brandishes the koboko cane and leads a hapless people on a journey to nowhere.

“On the political turf Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, my gubernatorial colleague under the Social Democratic Party, SDP, have emerged the flag bearers of two of Africa’s largest political parties. The emergence of these two great Nigerians is mainly kudos to the political School of Thought of General Shehu Yar’Adua and MKO Abiola, in that order.

“However, it would be tantamount to the height of socordia horribilis if they fail to carry women along in their permutations. Political apathy permeates the land and Nostalgia for free and fair elections akin to June 12 is palpable. Recall that former President Jonathan infamously confiscated my Presidential nomination form and for that oversight, the Peoples Democratic Party lost elections in 2015. We are still in court.

“My Darling husband, you did well in leaving behind a good and responsible family, sensible, educated and well-behaved children. God bless you for your leadership qualities. We miss you more than words can say. As I often said to you solemnly- ‘venit, vidit, vicit’ -you came, you saw you conquered.

“Besides, the blessed elements so enthusiastically infused in you the essence of the divine that Nature itself will declare from heaven and say to the world ‘MKO is a Great Man.’ Yes, is, not was, as We acknowledge once more, the sacrifices you made for June 12. Keep smiling, keep singing to the Almighty Daeus in Caelo.”

Zainab will be prosecuted for assaulting a policewoman, according to the inspector general of police Usman Baba.

  • Tinubu has chosen to walk along MKO’s path in picking Shettima – Adamu

Tinubu has chosen to walk along MKO’s path in picking Shettima – Adamu

Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, the National Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC) says Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has chosen to walk along the path of great Nigerians like late MKO Abiola in picking Sen. Kashim Shettima, as his running mate for the 2023 poll.

Adamu said this on Wednesday in Abuja at the unveiling of Sen. Kashim Shettima, a former two-term governor of Borno as Tinubu’s running mate for the 2023 presidential election.

“It is now time for the APC to step out to the public space with one of its best. Since the presidential candidate of our party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, announced the choice of his running mate on July 11, the nation is yet to know who he is, we welcome this opportunity to unveil him.

“As the national chairman of our party, it is both my honour and duty to unveil this distinguished son of our country and formally present him to this august body and through it, the Nigerian public,” he said.

Adamu said that the late MKO Abiola in 1993 presidential election,  chosed a Kanuri man, Alhaji Babagana Kingibe from the North-East as his running mate.

“We are beginning to suspect there must be some synergy between the Yoruba people and the Kanuri people. Maybe there is a mutual attraction between them that the rest of us do not know, never mind, we will put the searchlight on them,” he said.

According to him, the 1993 MKO Abiola-Kingibe presidential ticket and the current Tinubu-Shettima ticket, bridged one of our fault lines in the management of our diversities.

Adamu said that Nigerians overwhelmingly voted for that ticket because they trusted Abiola, a man who opened his arms to every tribe and religion in the country to run an inclusive government.

He said that Tinubu was a man who has also thrown his arms around every tribe in the country and has offered his shoulders for those in pains to lean on.

“He has used his wealth to bring succour to the needy, he can be trusted to run an inclusive government in which character, competence and vision matter to his administration.

“Our party has produced a candidate who is accepted by all zones in our country, he enjoys the trust of every strata in our national socio-economic structure.

“We are confident that Nigerians will entrust him with the leadership of our country in 2023. We offer our gratitude to Nigerians for the continued trust they repose on the APC.

“In our political tradition, the choice of a running mate is the exclusive right of the presidential candidate,” Adamu said.

He said that the party’s presidential candidate exercised that right with due consultations with stakeholders.

Adamu said that Tinubu being an astute politician, couldn’t have made the choice of a running mate without widely consulting the party’s stakeholders, including President Muhammadu Buhari.

The national chairman said that having made his choice, the party wholly and unconditionally accepted Tinubu’s choice and have a duty to work for their victory in the 2023 poll.

“At this time in our national development, and given the myriads of our national challenges, we should look for men and women of character, competence and demonstrable evidence of their performance in public or private offices.

“We believe these informed Tinubu’s decision to select Shettima because he fits the bill.

“Shettima brings to the joint ticket impressive antecedents as a political leader and administrator, Tinubu could not have made a better choice of a running mate.

“He chose a man he believes can partner with him to undertake the urgent task of our economic recovery as well as social and political development in peace and security,” he said.

Adamu said that as a former two-term governor of Borno, Shettima did what one might rightly describe as titanic things and demonstrated his capacity as a focused leader when the state was virtually under siege by the Boko Haram terrorists.

He said that when the bombs were exploding and the bullets were flying, Shettima bravely continued to provide for his people, building new primary and post-primary schools, health facilities and housing projects.

Adamu said that Shettima never abandoned his people, but continued to serve them under virtually impossible conditions.

“Shettima is not a stranger to the security challenges confronting our dear country going by his personal and first hand experiences with Boko Haram while they were at the peak of their operations in Borno.

“He has earned his right to a higher political office, he must now move up the ladder of our national service as the next Vice-Presidential of Nigeria.

“The unveiling of the Vice-Presidential candidate today sends out a strong signal to the country that our great party is ready and united around the common cause of coasting home with victory at every level in 2023.

“But we must not be unmindful of the hurdles ahead, it is time to purge ourselves of the bitterness arising from our individual losses in the party primaries,” he said.

Adamu added:It 8s time to submit ourselves to the will of God and the party and do nothing to sabotage its well-laid plans for victory.

“The other political parties want what we want, and that is, to win and form the next government.

“If by any acts of omission or commission we give in to bitterness and pettiness or fail to see the larger picture or take any of the political parties for granted.

“We will constitute an obstacle to the victory of our party.”

    2023: I’ll repeat my father’s feat 30 years after – MKO Abiola’s son boasts

Mr Kola Abiola, presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) said on Wednesday in Abuja that the party would win the 2023 presidential election.

Kola, scion of deceased Chief MKO Abiola said PRP’s victory would be synonymous with that of his deceased father on June 12, 1993.

He made the assertions when he and governorship candidates of the party received their Certificates of Return from the chairman of the party, Alhaji Falalu Bello.

Abiola who noted that it would be 30 years in 2023 since his late father won the presidential election, said “there is going to be a repeat in 2023.’’

“It reminds me of 1993. A lot of people came out for the first time to vote because of MKO. We are going to have a repeat of that in 2023.

“If we can win it then, we should win it now,’’ he said.

He said that the biggest role the PRP would play at the general elections was to serve as a bridge for current generation of Nigerian youths.

“We are going to bring the younger generation into politics, governance and leadership.

“I’m appealing to youths to regard us as the vehicle of change; we should make sure that at the next election, we have the highest voter turnout.

“By this, we will make your voices and number count,’’ he said.

Abiola urged the party’s governorship candidates to ensure that youths obtained their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

“This is the only party that doesn’t have any encumbrances. We will use that to build the future of Nigeria.

“We are a national party. To everybody’s surprise, we had 3,625 delegates at the primary elections.

“We are present in every local government area. We have 22 candidates for governorship elections and we have more than 500 candidates vying for other different offices.

“In the history of the PRP, this is the largest so far till date,’’ he said.

PRP’s gubernatorial candidate in Cross River, Mr Usani Usani, urged the electorate to “assess who they want and vote for that person irrespective of party.

“There are no two major parties as insinuated in some quarters. Nigeria has 18 registered political parties which are all active.

“I believe PRP has got what it takes to rule this country,’’ he said.

Earlier, Bello said the PRP is ready to offer leadership at all levels.

“We can compete with all parties to give the nation a new lease of life. Our candidates will win in free and fair elections,’’ he stressed.

  • June 12: Wole Soyinka, Femi Falana, other activists lay wreath on Abiola’s grave

Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, Femi Falana and several others on Sunday, gathered to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the death of Chief Moshood Abiola.

They gathered at his residence in Ikeja, Lagos for a wreath-laying ceremony even as they expressed concerns about the state of the nation.

The late Chief Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, died on July 7, 1998, after spending years in detention in the fight for his mandate and for Nigeria’s return to democracy.

Soyinka, as well as some others present at the ceremony, while paying tribute to Abiola lamented that Nigeria has not achieved his vision and Nigerians were still battling poverty and injustice among other things.

The Nobel Laureate, who has repeatedly called for decisive action to combat insecurity in the country, drew attention to the rate of poverty in the country.

“I am afraid. Just looking at the level of poverty scares me. I am afraid for this nation,” he said.

“For the first time, in a very deep, visceral way, I really am afraid for this country.”

Mr Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, recalled Abiola’s vision of the nation and called for unity.

He said, “Abiola stood for justice for all. Abiola’s mandate was a reflection of the popular will of the people. That mandate, that election defied ethnicity, religion or any other primordial consideration.

“Therefore, if we want to recognise June 12, if we want to celebrate Abiola, we must celebrate the unity of our people and not the disunity of our country”.

  • God’s hands never too short to deliver Nigeria from challenges – SGF

Mr Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), says the hands of God are never too short to deliver Nigeria from whatever challenges it may be going through.

He made the assertion at the 2022 Democracy Day interdenominational church service, held at the Abuja Christian Centre on Sunday, where he represented Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

“We assure ourselves that the hands of God are never too short to deliver, and that his grace would always prevail for our good.

“Equally important is that we also assure ourselves that no matter how challenging the situation or moment might be, there is always enough God-given strength within us as a people to surmount them.

“Nigerians have always risen to the occasion; when it mattered most, we rose to the occasion when colonial powers subjugated our people and lorded over our resources.

“We rose to the occasion, following the ravages of a civil war to rebuild a united country, no matter how imperfect, we rose to the occasion,” he said.

The SGF added that the country also rose when military dictatorships pushed us to the age of extinction and negotiated our way into a democratic government.

This, he said, provided a platform for us to build a country we could all be proud of, adding that we had come this far because of the collaboration of all.

He extended President Muhammadu Buhari”s gratitude to the body of Christ for its stabilising role in the growth of the county’s democracy.

“I believe an interdenominational gathering of this sort is an important way to mark this special anniversary of our nation’s democracy.

“Largely because the values of justice, equality, fairness and inclusion, which underpin democratic governance are also at the heart of our Christian faith.

“A day like this set aside to commemorate Nigeria’s transition from military rule to democratic governance gives us an opportunity to reflect on how far we have come as a people. It invites sobriety and gratitude,” he said.

Mustapha said that the day allowed Nigerians to remember the decades characterised by lack of freedom, suspicion, and uncertainty and calls to mind the prayers, faith as well as the courageous actions.

He urged people to therefore see the day as a day for gratitude and hope, and a day to remind ourselves that what was once thought impossible of Nigeria had been made possible.

The SGF expressed optimism that with unity, all hands being on deck, there would be light at the end of the tunnel, in spite of the country’s challenges.

“It is possible for joy to overcome sorrow, it is possible for peace to prevail, it is possible for us to be re-united, irrespective of our cultural, linguistic, religious or even ideological differences.

“Jesus said to the crowd in Luke, Chapter 12, verse 54, when you see a cloud rising in the West, immediately you will say it’s going to rain.

“And it does and of course we have seen the rain coming over Nigeria, reign of peace and prosperity, one which like the goodness of God touches everyone, no matter who or where they are.

“Today, let us be rest assured in the promise and possibilities of Nigeria, we have the talent and the resources to be a beacon of hope and standard bearer for the rest of Africa and the block grace,” he said.

Mustapha said that as a country, we had been progressively moving, proving that we had what it took to run an open, honest and transparent government that guarantees the rule of law.

He added that the Federal Government had showed that it could lift 100 million people out of poverty and guarantee equal access to education and opportunities for our women.

He said the government had also brought into fruition the most comprehensive social welfare programme for the poor and vulnerable in our society.

“We know the challenges, we live with them, but we also know and we have seen in the worlds of hold apostle that in all these things, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

“And of course, our nation will continue its long but steady march toward the fulfillment of his goal.

“I believe you are as persuaded as I am, because we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose,” he said.

Mustapha assured that the government was working towards the emergence of a stronger, united, peaceful and economically prosperous Nigeria.

Recall that from 1999, Nigeria had consistently celebrated Democracy Day.

The day is used to mark the end of military rule, and the return of power and control to the hands of those freely elected by the people to represent them in government.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Buhari-led federal government in 2018, moved Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12, the day the election that launched Nigeria into democracy took place.

The June 12, 1993, general election was acclaimed the freest election in the country’s political history, though the presumed winner, Chief Moshood Abiola, and Nigerians were denied their rights and choice of leadership.

This was because the election was consequently annulled on June 24, same year, by the Gen. Ibrahim Babangida military administration.

The service was attended by members of the diplomatic communities and heads of government agencies, among others.
