  • Lessons from last Monday – By Francis Ewherido

Lessons from last Monday – By Francis Ewherido

Last Monday was sharply different for me. The screen of my phone went blank over the weekend. Consequently, I was also blank for much of the weekend. It is not as if I am addicted to phones. I use it basically for calls, emails, messages and getting knowledge from responsible and informative online sources.

I only use one handset because, like a spouse, I cannot handle two. After losing two phones when I was using two handsets, I started using only one and I have not misplaced any in the last 15 years. Phone manufacturers had people like me in mind and started making phones with provision for dual Sims. That helped me to partly overcome the problem when there is poor network from one provider, the primary reason why some people have more than one phone number.

Switching and mastering the usage of Nokia, blackberry and other brands was too much stress for me and once I got used to android, I never switched again. In those days, I would not have repaired the phone. I would simply have gone to get a new phone. I was very intolerant of the disruption caused by faulty electronics. When one technician saw that my faulty deep freezer was full of foodstuff and wanted to use the opportunity to hold me to ransom, I called off his bluff. I went and bought a new freezer, dropped three post-dated cheques with the people I buy electronics from and came home with it. These days, the first option is to repair.

On Monday morning, instead of the usual Monday morning routine, I headed for Computer Village, Lagos. On entering the car, I noticed that I forgot my wallet, but I did not bother since my wife was with me and she was driving. I did not need my driver’s license, or so I thought. Lesson number one, always go out carrying an identification. I broke the same rule I drive into my children’s head because I was with my wife. What if the NLC demonstration was that day, turned rowdy and I was arrested?

When we got to the mall, where we usually parked, I wanted to go with her as usual, but she said the building where the repairer had his office was a multi-storey building. My right knee is still healing, so I do not climb beyond first floor for now. Lessons number two: Do not assume when facts are available. I assumed we were going to the usual place on the ground floor. I should have asked my wife at home. Assumption makes even the most sensible or intelligent people look foolish and do foolish things. As I wrote in my book, Life Lessons from Mudipapa, the legendary philosopher, Aristotle, assumed that women had fewer teeth than men, but he was married twice and also had a daughter and could easily have verified his assertion. He goofed because he assumed.

That said, the Lagos State Government needs to review its approval laws for public buildings to make multi-storey buildings user-friendly for the disabled, physically challenged and temporary physically challenged people. I spent three months in India. Every public building with more than three floors I entered had a functional lift. I do not want to mention Europe and America. Using the staircase should be an option not by compulsion. The lifts must also be functional. I have climbed 20 floors and 13 floors, respectively, in Lagos because the lifts were bad. I was younger and much fitter then. Now, I will simply abort the trip and walk away.

When my wife was leaving the mall, I remembered you pay to use the toilet even to do the “small one” (urinate). I collected N400 from her just in case I needed to use the toilet. After she left, I remembered I had nothing to keep me busy; no phone, book, newspaper, etc. I also had no money to engage in any activity. I was totally unprepared for the period I would be waiting. Lessons three: Always be prepared and take more money than you need. It is better to bring back the money than be stranded.

It also occurred to me that I was incommunicado. There was no phone to communicate with my wife or the rest of the world. I thought of paying a guy sharing the table with me to use his phone to reach my wife. Then I remembered stories of people who got into trouble because their phone numbers were found on certain call logs. Apart from obvious emergency, I will not allow a stranger to use my phone with the situation in the country right now. I lamented not borrowing the last daughter’s phone. But it never occurred to me that I would be separated from my wife during the trip. Lesson four: Prepare for the unexpected.

I resent idleness. Without a phone, book and money, I decided to get busy by observing my environment, another information gathering technique that we were taught in school. The mall is very neat and beautiful like malls abroad. The cleaners were cleaning per second. Two people littered the floor. Within a minute that I was distracted the bottle of water and used tissue had disappeared before I looked again. Then I asked myself, why can’t the whole of Lagos be clean like this? Then I learnt the fifth lesson. The management of the mall is intentional and deliberate about keeping the mall clean. Lagosians, the Lagos State and local governments need to be intentional and deliberate to make Lagos clean all round, not in patches.

I couple passed with their baby. The husband was fully dressed in Kaftan and the baby girl was all dressed up, but the wife was wearing bum shorts and a skimpy top in a mall! You know why? She has flawless skin and she wanted the world to know. Why will a man be fully dressed and allow his wife to go out with him half naked? When the hawks hover around and anyone succeeds in plucking her, even if once, you cry blue murder that “my wife cheated on me.” Lesson six: A wife a private property, an asset, guard her jealously.

After what looked like an eternity my wife showed up to my relief. Time to go to home. As a rule I use the toilet before the leaving the house and I also use the toilet before departing from anywhere I go to. You never know with Lagos traffic. The mall charges N100 per entry whether you are doing the “big one” or “small one.” The toilets were very neat. After washing my hands, I wanted to dry them. The hand dryer was faulty. They had no hand toilet paper to dry hands, which is the minimum standard abroad. There was also no toilet paper in the toilet because I suspect people take them away. I then asked for tissue. They gave me the cheapest of tissue I have ever seen. I was shocked. After paying N100 just to “piss?” Seventh lessons: Maintain standards all the way, pay attention to details and give people value for their money.

It was already after 3pm. I am pre-diabetic, but I do not take drug. I use food to control my blood sugar. My wife asked if we should buy food. “Mee? After spending money I did not budget for fixing my phone, N1,600 for parking ticket for and another N200 for the two times I used the toilet. I will eat when I get home. Just buy me a bottle of coke so that if my blood sugar drops suddenly before we get home, half a bottle of coke will take care of it.” Lesson eight: Prepare for medical emergency.

When we got home I was expecting my usual soup and blended oat. I saw eba, my former addiction, which I jettisoned to control blood sugar. Once in a while cannot cause damage. Instead of getting angry, I descended on it and had my lunch/dinner. Lesson nine: Marriage is full of landmines. Diffuse the ones you see. At some point in my marriage, I decided that food will never cause a rift between my wife and I have stuck to that. Final lesson: Husband, eat whatever your wife sets before you. Wife: By now you should know what your husband likes. But in unusual situations, both of you should show understanding.

That was my last Monday. In the night, did EKEDC give me light to allow me sleep off the stress? For where!

  • See why domestic airlines will halt operations from Monday

See why domestic airlines will halt operations from Monday

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has announced plans to shut down operations from Monday.

TheNewsGuru reports that this is due to the skyrocketing cost of Aviation fuel, which has reached an all-time high of N700 per litre.

The Airline Operators stated this in a letter its President, Alhaji Abdulmunaf Yunusa Sarina, sent to the Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika.

Sarina’s position was endorsed by the chief executives of all the domestic airlines.

The letter read: “It is with a great sense of responsibility and patriotism that the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have carried on deploying and subsidizing their services to our highly esteemed Nigerian flying public in the last four months despite the steady and astronomical hike in the price of JetA1 and other operating costs.

“Overtime, aviation fuel price (JetA1) has risen from N190 per litre to N700 currently. No airline in the world can absorb this kind of sudden shock from such an astronomical rise over a short period.

“While aviation fuel worldwide is said to cost about 40% of an airline’s operating cost globally, the present hike has shut up Nigeria’s operating cost to about 95%.

“In the face of this, airlines have engaged the Federal Government, the National Assembly, NNPC and Oil Marketers with the view to bringing the cost of JetA1 down which has currently made the unit cost per seat for a one hour flight in Nigeria today to an average of N120,000.

“The latter cannot be fully passed to passengers who are already experiencing a lot of difficulties.

“While AON appreciates the efforts of the current government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure air transport in Nigeria grows, unfortunately, the cost of aviation fuel has continued to rise unabated thereby creating huge pressure on the sustainability of operations and financial viability of the airlines. This is unsustainable and the airlines can no longer absorb the pressure.

“To this end therefore, the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) hereby wishes to regrettably inform the general public that member airlines will discontinue operations nationwide with effect from Monday May 9, 2022 until further notice.

“AON uses this medium to humbly state that we regret any inconveniences this very difficult decision might cause and appeal to travelers to kindly reconsider their travel itinerary and make alternative arrangements.”

5G: NCC Conducts Mock Exercise Ahead Of Monday Auction

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says it has successfully carried out a mock session for the 3.5 gigahertz (GHz) spectrum auction for the deployment of the Fifth Generation (5G) network in the country.

NCC spokesman, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, explained that the simulated auction held on Friday in Abuja was preparatory to the main auction scheduled to take place on Monday.

The conduct of the simulation exercise, he said, was in line with the requirements stipulated in the Information Memorandum (IM) for the 3.5 GHz spectrum auction.

The IM is a document that defines the process for the licensing of the 3.5 GHz spectrum band earlier published on the commission’s website at the inception of the auction process.

“Using the Ascending Clock Auction System for the mock session, the three qualified bidders for the 3.5 GHz spectrum, namely MTN Nigeria, Mafab Communications Ltd, and Airtel Networks Ltd, participated in the software-based simulated auction exercise,” the statement said.

“Following the successful mock auction, the stage is set for the commission to license two slots in the 3.5 GHz spectrum band expected to be picked by successful bidders at the end of the Main Auction on Monday, December 13, 2021.

“The auction on Monday will mark a turning point in Nigeria’s determination to harness the benefits of 5G for the nation’s socio-economic growth as the concrete roll-out of 5G commences in 2022.”

Chairman of NCC Board of Commissioners, Professor Adeolu Akande; the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the commission, Professor Umar Danbatta; Executive Commissioner (Technical Services), Ubale Maska, and the Executive Commissioner (Stakeholder Management), Adeleke Adewolu, were among those who witnessed the exercise.

Others include representatives from the bidding companies, senior management staff from relevant departments of the commission, technical consultants, software consultants, legal consultants, and other external observers.

In a brief remark at the mock auction, Danbatta said the commission had taken all necessary steps to ensure due diligence on the credibility of the consultants and to safeguard the integrity of the software solution being used to carry out the implementation of the national assignment.

“This is consistent with the open, credible transparent, and fair manner by which the commission is known to have conducted previous auction processes, which have been locally and globally applauded,” Danbatta was quoted as saying in the statement.

In order to ensure a fail-proof process, Adinde said the NCC also carried out a simulation of the manual process of the auction, aside from the electronic mock.

He explained that this was to make bidders familiar with the manual auction in case of any circumstances on the main action day that may warrant a need to switch to the manual auction.

“It is pertinent to note that the two forms- electronic and manual- are clearly stated in the IM and they follow the same process,” the statement added.

“Representatives of the bidding companies, the commission, the consultants, and other observers at the mock auction expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the simulation exercise, which also provided an opportunity for the commission to perfect the auction process ahead of the main auction.

“The commission had commenced the process for the auction of the 5G spectrum in the last quarter of the 2021 and had, since then, carried out a number of activities ahead of the main auction.”

COVID-19: NCDC announces 36 new infections Monday

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said 36 new infections were announced across seven states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

The centre however said Nigeria recorded no additional fatalities on Monday.

The NCDC disclosed this in an update on its website on Tuesday morning.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 36 infections reported on Monday represented a decrease from 57 reported on Sunday.

The Nigerian Public Health Institute noted that that new cases increased the country’s infection toll to 213,625, while its fatality toll stood at 2, 974.

The agency said that a total of 206,778 people had been successfully treated and discharged in the country, noting that the FCT reported 240 new discharges, which include 236 community discharges.

The NCDC said that Lagos State reported 21 cases on Monday, while Kano State reported four cases and the FCT and Gombe State reported three cases each.

Niger State, recorded two cases, while the three states of Bauchi, Plateau and Rivers reported one case each.

It, however added that two states; Delta and Sokoto, recorded no cases on Monday.

The public health agency said that a multi-sectoral national Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) activated at Level 2, continued to coordinate the national response activities.

It added the country recorded its first cases in February 2020, and by Sunday, 3,440,172 had been tested so far.

  • Monday no longer work-free day in Anambra

Monday no longer work-free day in Anambra

Mr C. Don Adinuba, the Anambra Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment has informed all public service workers in the state that Monday is no more a work- free day in the state, effective from Nov. 22.

Adinuba, who made this known in a press statement on Sunday in Awka, said that Anambra Government wishes to remind all individuals and organisations in the state that work has resumed in earnest in Anambra.

“This reminder became imperative in view of the tendency of some people to observe in the last few months every Monday as a work-free day.

“Work free day was being observed in the state in compliance with the directive by some non-state actors in an effort to press the Federal Government to free the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“Kanu is standing trial for some charges in Abuja, brought by the federal administration.

“The IPOB leadership has suspended the directive requiring people to stay at home every Monday which it said would start from Monday, Sept.15, throughout the Southeast geopolitical zone.

“The IPOB leadership has in the last few days reiterated the suspension, warning that any person who still tries to enforce the earlier decision is on his or her own and will, therefore, be dealt with accordingly.

“The IPOB leadership has kept every pledge it has made, including rescinding its decision to thwart the November 6 gubernatorial election in Anambra State.

“In fact, far from disrupting the election, IPOB encouraged the people of Anambra State to come out in their numbers and exercise their democratic right on Nov. 6.

“The election is now recognised as easily the most peaceful and the fairest election since the state was created in 1991,” he said.

Adinuba said that a group of Igbo leaders, including worthy sons of Anambra, met with President Muhammadu Buhari, in Abuja, on Friday, Nov. 19, to plead that Kanu be released and the issues around his arrest and trial resolved in a political way.

The commissioner said that in view of all efforts being made by elders of the zone to secure Kanu’s release, people of Anambra are enjoined to go about their normal business every Monday.

He urged the public not to entertain any fear of disruption of their work or any kind of harassment from any quarters from Monday, Nov. 22.

Adinuba said that the month of December is almost here and it is the month mankind marks the birth of Jesus Christ, defined by peace, unity, love, solidarity and merrymaking.

He noted that the festive period ushers in a new year which itself is a festive period and Anambra public like many other Nigerians, use the period to launch community and church development projects.

“We hold cultural festivals and conduct important personal, family and community events such as marriages, weddings and title taking. All this requires a lot of money.

“What is more, parents and guardians pay the educational fees of their children and wards during this period, thus making January the longest month in the year, as it is described in common parlance.

“It is in the interest of our people that all markets, all businesses, all offices and all schools in Anambra operate fully every Monday, with effect from Nov. 22.

All our people are once again assured that they will not face any kind of molestation on any day of the week from any quarters henceforth,” Adinuba reassured.
