Gov Okpebholo rescues accident victims on Benin–Auchi road

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State on Saturday was personally involved in the rescue of victims of a ghastly motor accident along the Benin-Auchi Road after the bypass.

Okpbeholo was en route to Irrua in Esan Central Local Government Area of the state with his entourage when he encountered a heavy gridlock and immediately stopped to assess the situation.

Upon arrival at the accident scene, he found several victims in critical condition, many bleeding profusely, while bystanders were recording videos instead of offering assistance.

Moved by the dire state of the victims, Sen Okpebholo ordered two of his security Hilux vehicles to be converted into emergency transport vehicles.

He personally supervised as injured passengers, including a woman with severe injuries, were lifted into the waiting vehicles and rushed to the hospital for urgent treatment.

Eyewitnesses reported that the accident was caused by the driver of a white Toyota Venza, with registration number ABUJA GWA 50 AW, who drove against traffic, resulting in a collision involving four vehicles.

The vehicles were three commercial mini-buses loaded with passengers and the Venza.

The impact left scores injured and caused a major traffic gridlock.

The governor remained at the accident scene until he was assured that the victims were safely conveyed to a medical facility under the escort of another security vehicle.

His swift action drew applause from motorists, residents, and sympathisers, who hailed him as a humane and God-fearing leader who prioritised the sanctity of life.

An eyewitness praised the governor’s actions, saying, “Before the governor arrived, people were only taking pictures and videos. But he came, took charge, and ensured the victims were rescued.

“This is the kind of leader we need; one who leads with compassion and action.”

The governor’s intervention has been widely appreciated, showcasing his commitment to the welfare of his people.

Edo assembly confirms 4 new commissioners

The Edo State House of Assembly on Wednesday confirmed four additional commissioner-nominees for appointment into the state’s executive council, following a formal request from the governor.

Governor Monday Okpebholo had sent a letter to the House seeking the screening and confirmation of the nominated individuals for appointment into key positions in his cabinet.

It would be recalled that the House had on Aug. 20 confirmed Kassim Afegbua, along with seven others, as commissioner-designates to serve in various ministries in the state.

During Wednesday’s plenary, lawmakers adopted the report of the House Committee on Rules and Business regarding the screening process for the five new nominees.

The report indicated that four of the five nominees were present and recommended for confirmation, while one nominee failed to appear.

The confirmed commissioner-designates are: Vincent Osas Uwadia, Etin-osa Ogbeiwi, Saturday Uwuilekhue Idehen and Charity Amayaenvbo.

In a voice vote during plenary, members of the House unanimously confirmed the four nominees as commissioner-designates without objections.

Edo by-election: Okpebholo faults malfunction of BVAS machine

Gov. Monday Okpebholo of Edo on Saturday expressed concerns over the slow performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in the ongoing by-election in Edo Central Senatorial District.

Okpebholo said this while casting his vote at Ward 2 Polling Unit 1 in Udomi Primary School in Esan Central Local Government.

Speaking with journalists shortly after casting his vote, Okpebholo said that although the exercise was peaceful, the BVAS machines deployed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were causing unnecessary delay.

“Well, I just voted. You can see the frustration. The BVAS is just too slow. It takes too long before you can get accredited. I think INEC needs to look into this. So far, so good, the reports I’m getting are good,” Okpebholo said.

The governor, however, commended INEC for the peaceful conduct of the exercise. He urged the electorate in the senatorial district to participate fully in the process and defend their votes.

“The process has been smooth here and the reports I am getting from other areas in the district are also smooth. INEC is doing well. I urge the voters to come out to vote and defend their votes,” Okpebholo said.

The by-election is being conducted to fill the vacant senatorial seat following Okpebholo’s emergence as Governor of Edo State.

  • Edo Govt. bans transport unions, others from revenue collection

Edo Govt. bans transport unions, others from revenue collection

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has banned transport unions and a private firm, Atalakpa Recovery Concept Ltd, from collecting any form of revenue in Edo.

A statement on Wednesday in Benin by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Ikhilor, said that the groups no longer have the authority to collect levies, taxes, or dues.

The government raised concerns over the resurgence of illegal collections by unions acting under misleading pretences across various parts of the state.

Ikhilor explained that some of the unions were previously allowed to support the Edo Internal Revenue Service (EIRS) under strict conditions that they have now violated.

He said that their activities reportedly include unauthorised cash collection, intimidation, extortion, and harassment of motorists and traders, violating the terms of their engagement.

“As a result, the state government has immediately banned NURTW, RTEAN, ANNEWAT, and Drivers on Wheel from any revenue-related activity across Edo.

“These groups, including Atalakpa Recovery Concept Ltd, are no longer permitted to collect dues from any individual, driver or road user statewide.

“Credible reports indicate that Atalakpa Recovery Concept Ltd and its operatives have engaged in serious abuse of power, leading to widespread public extortion,” he said

The SSG noted that governor Okpebholo viewed the illegal activities as economic sabotage and a grave threat to law, order, and public confidence in governance.

He stressed that intimidation of motorists or abuse in the name of revenue collection would no longer be tolerated under any circumstance in the state.

“All union revenue operations are now suspended indefinitely pending further directives from the Edo Government and relevant regulatory bodies.

“The new order prohibits any person or group under the listed unions from collecting payments or levies from road users in any form.

“Motorists and traders are advised not to comply with demands for cash or other illegal payments made by the banned transport unions,” he added

Ikhilor encouraged citizens to report illegal revenue collection activities directly to the Edo Special Taskforce led by SP Michael Anetor.

According to him, complaints can be directed to the official taskforce contact number: 08038157126 for prompt investigation and enforcement action by the authorities.

He said that the state government had formally notified the Commissioner of Police and all security agencies to act against any violations of the revenue ban.

He further explained that security agents have now been authorised to arrest and prosecute anyone or any group acting contrary to the governor’s directive immediately.

  • PDP faults Okpebholo’s claim on Benin-Asaba road project

PDP faults Okpebholo’s claim on Benin-Asaba road project

The Edo chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described Gov. Monday Okpebholo’s claim of initiating the ongoing reconstruction of the Benin-Asaba Expressway as misleading and inaccurate.

In a statement on Saturday, the party’s caretaker committee’s Publicity Secretary, Chris Nehikhare, said “the governor’s narrative distorts public records.”

He condemned the claim by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary linking the project to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda (RHA), describing it as political propaganda and a misrepresentation of facts.

According to Nehikhare, the expressway project was conceived and finalised under former Gov. Godwin Obaseki’s administration through a structured public-private partnership framework.

“In January 2024, Obaseki signed a N228 billion concession agreement with Triple A Infrastructure, InfraCorp, and Africa Plus Partners to execute the redevelopment of the road,” Nehikhare said.

He explained that the project was part of the Federal Government’s Highway Development and Management Initiative and followed all required regulatory approvals and standards.

Nehikhare noted that the initiative was not a routine contract but a visionary infrastructure renewal effort designed by Obaseki to deliver long-term economic benefits.

He insisted that the APC-led federal government played no role in the planning or initiation of the project, alleging that execution was deliberately delayed until after the Edo 2024 elections.

Describing Okpebholo’s recent inspection tours of the project as mere publicity stunts, the PDP said the tours added no real value to the project’s scope or funding.

The party maintained that Edo people were politically aware and could not be deceived.

It urged the governor to focus on initiating and completing his own impactful projects rather than claiming credit for inherited ones.

Nehikhare concluded by challenging the governor to deliver on his mandate with original projects that genuinely benefit the people.

It would be recalled that during a recent inspection, Okpebholo described the project as a tangible outcome of Tinubu’s RHA.

He had praised it as a cornerstone of the president’s development vision and a demonstration of the federal government’s commitment to its promises.

“This is part of the RHA of Mr President. He is taking this road straight to Asaba. It is going to be 10 lanes. Five on one side, five on the other side,” he said.

“Remember when this road was flagged off a few months ago, the Minister for Works was here.

“The Minister for Finance was also here. And I was here. This is the fruit of that flag-off,” Okpebholo said.

According to him, and this is the demonstration of Mr president’s RHA for our people.”

Gov Okpebholo suspends adviser on oil, gas

Governor Monday Okpebholo has suspended his Special Adviser on Oil and Gas, Felix Osemwengie Isere, for alleged unauthorized fundraising over an upcoming Oil and Gas summit in Edo.

The suspension was announced in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Ikhilor, on Tuesday in Benin.

The SSG said the governor also announced the immediate halt of the planned summit, scheduled to begin on Aug. 7.

“Due to the breach, the proposed summit is suspended, and Isere is directed to refund all monies collected from donors for the event.

“Prospective donors are hereby advised to stop all dealings with the suspended adviser,” Ikhilor said.

  • I didn’t threaten Peter Obi – Gov Okpebholo

I didn’t threaten Peter Obi – Gov Okpebholo

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has said his directive to former Governor Peter Obi of Anambra was advice and should not be misinterpreted or taken out of context as a threat.

Governor Okpebholo made this statement on Tuesday in Benin, stressing that he has no regrets about asking the former Anambra Governor to notify him before visiting the State.

Speaking at the official inauguration of the new Edo Line, a transport company owned by the state government, Okpebholo noted that his own failure to heed such advice from the Commissioner of Police in 2024 led to the death of his police orderly.

“Because of the rain, I won’t say much. Even when I said just one word, people were already crying. What I said was a simple advice. I told him not to visit Edo without informing me. As chief security officer, it’s a basic protocol.

“If asking him to notify me is considered a crime, so be it. I have no regrets. Let me not dwell on irrelevant matters. This is not important. To the people of Edo, our message and intention have already been made clear.

“I don’t understand their pain. Is it because I said they don’t have ‘shishi’? Didn’t they say they don’t have ‘shishi’?” Okpebholo asked .

He recalled being similarly advised by the commissioner of police in 2024, when he arrived at Benin Airport, under former governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration.

“The commissioner saw me and asked me to remain at the airport. I ignored him. At the gate, my police orderly was shot dead.

“Inspector Akor Onu was killed before my very eyes. That painful experience still guides how I view security warnings and protocols to this very day.”

“I’ve seen security reports. I’ve advised Obi. If he listens, good. If not, it’s his choice. It doesn’t concern me,” he added.

Okpebholo, however, attributed the launch of the new Edo Line to the state’s improved federal allocation, which he said made the project possible.

He also credited the success to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying that without a father like him, the dream of reviving Edo line would never have been possible.

“This dream could never come true without a father like the President. He truly cares about Edo and the entire South-South region.

“In Edo, we must always thank the President. He has shown genuine love, funding us, monitoring us, and helping transform our vision into visible reality.

“President Tinubu brought practical governance to Edo. His Renewed Hope Agenda is transforming the country,” he stated.

He expressed appreciation to the people of Edo for voting for him, saying that their support was a clear sign that progress was truly underway.

“What we’re witnessing today is a dream fulfilled. The people of Edo have been in the wilderness for years. Now, change has finally arrived,” he added.

Also speaking, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, guest of honour at the event, supported Governor Okpebholo’s stance on security protocols for high-profile Nigerians.

Wike emphasised that high-profile Nigerians, including Peter Obi, must inform a state governor before visiting to ensure that adequate security measures were provided for their safety.

He explained that when Peter Obi visited him in Rivers during his tenure, Obi secured official clearance beforehand, respecting security protocols and standard procedures accordingly.

Wike expressed surprise that Obi failed to follow similar protocols when he visited Edo, questioning why such a crucial step was skipped.

“I thank God for Edo people for standing firm during Monday Okpebholo’s election. As far as I’m concerned, the governor is focused and prepared.

“I do not identify with failure. I identify with people who mean well for their people.

“You have also resolved the problem of students, women, and men travelling.

“You have actually shown your support for our President in practical terms by your performance,” he said.

According to him, your performance will give you the confidence to always come home even after your tenure as governor.

  • Gov Okpebholo gives only condition to welcome Peter Obi into Edo State

Gov Okpebholo gives only condition to welcome Peter Obi into Edo State

Governor Monday Okpebholo has disclosed that Edo State will only welcome Mr Peter Obi and all well-meaning Nigerians, provided appropriate security and procedural protocols are respected.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Okpebholo made the disclosure in a statement released on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Mr Fred Itua.

Recall Okpebholo had earlier at an event warned that Peter Obi must not enter Edo State without notifying the government, stating that the former Anambra governor’s safety could not be guaranteed otherwise.

However, the State Government has claimed that various misinterpretations surrounded the recent remarks made by Okpebholo regarding the visit of Mr Obi to the State.

The statement reads: “It is imperative to state clearly that the Governor did not issue any form of threat to Mr. Obi, but rather emphasized the need for high-profile individuals, particularly politically exposed persons, to notify and seek security clearance from the Governor before embarking on any public engagements within the State.

“As the Chief Security Officer of Edo State, it is the Governor’s constitutional responsibility to safeguard the lives and property of all residents and visitors alike.

“This duty includes ensuring that adequate security measures are put in place during high-profile visits or events that may attract large crowds or media attention. When such protocols are ignored, it creates serious security vulnerabilities, not only for the visitor but also for citizens who may be caught in avoidable threats.

“Governor Okpebholo’s position is particularly relevant in light of the rising attacks and abductions of religious leaders, especially Catholic priests and Christian clerics.

“Edo State has witnessed its share of these tragic incidents, including the abduction of seminarians and the killing of clergy in recent years. Public donations made to churches, hospitals, or other faith-based institutions, while noble in intent, must be approached with caution and in full consultation with the appropriate security channels, to avoid exposing these institutions and their leaders to further danger”.

It reads further: “The Governor’s comments on the need for discretion in public giving are rooted in both security intelligence and moral responsibility.

“The Holy Scripture reminds us that giving is best done in private, as Jesus admonished us in Matthew 6 : 2 – 4 that, “when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpet…but when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

“In today’s volatile security environment, this wisdom cannot be overstated. Governor Okpebholo is not Peter Obi, who, as Governor of Anambra State, detained Nasir El-Rufai when he visited.

“Furthermore, the Governor’s concerns should not be twisted for political mileage by individuals seeking to score cheap points. The State Government will not fold its arms and allow politically motivated activities to endanger lives. We expect leaders, no matter how highly placed, to align with the protocols and security realities of the areas they visit.

“Governor Okpebholo is committed to a safe and inclusive Edo State for all. His administration is working tirelessly to address the insecurity it inherited, and his call for coordination and orderliness should be seen as a measure of responsible governance, not hostility.

“The Edo State Government will continue to welcome all well-meaning Nigerians, provided appropriate security and procedural protocols are respected”.

  • Why I ‘threatened’ Peter Obi – Governor Okpebholo speaks

Why I ‘threatened’ Peter Obi – Governor Okpebholo speaks

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has clarified his controversial remark about former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi’s visit, saying it was misunderstood and rooted in protocol, not hostility.

TheNewsGuru reports that in a widely circulated video, Governor Okpebholo was seen addressing supporters and warning that Peter Obi must not enter Edo State without notifying the government, stating that the former Anambra governor’s safety could not be guaranteed otherwise.

He particularly condemned the recent visit of Peter Obi, to Benin City, and asserted that it coincided with a resurgence of violence.

“That man who says he has no ‘shishi’ came and dropped ₦15 million. Where did he get it from? After he left, three people were killed. For this reason, Obi must not come to Edo without security clearance,” the Governor stated.

However, his comments drew widespread condemnation from Labour Party Senators, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), OBIdient Movement and many Nigerians.

After backlash over his comments linking Obi’s visit to violence, the governor through his spokesperson, Fred Itua emphasized inclusivity and respect for all Nigerians, stressing the importance of adhering to official procedures.

Okpebholo clarified that Edo State remains a home for all Nigerians, regardless of party affiliation, faith, or creed. He added that his government is committed to politics of inclusivity, not exclusion, adding that his administration is one of bridges, not walls.

He insisted that proper protocols must be adhered to by political leaders, including Obi.

Itua pointed out that the governor’s comment was not an attack but a statement borne out of official protocol, not personal bias.

His statement reads: “At every point in the journey of leadership, those in authority must provide not only stewardship but also clarity. The weight of governance often demands that decisions, words, and actions reflect a deep sense of responsibility, not just to one’s immediate constituency but to the broader Nigerian family. This is the principle that guides Governor Monday Okpebholo’s leadership.

“Much like the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu’s compelling reflection in his 1989 book, Because I Am Involved, the current realities in Edo State require a similar declaration. The governor’s words and actions are not accidental; they are deeply rooted in duty, context, and commitment to Edo people. His statement — now the subject of public commentary — was made in a setting that demanded clarity of roles and respect for official order.

“Governor Okpebholo, a man of civility and courtesy, upholds the highest traditions of intergovernmental respect and protocol. In public events where protocol is critical, the order of recognition and speech must follow laid-down standards, especially where serving officials and guests of honour are present.

“His clarification was a restatement of this norm — that while all visitors to the state are welcome and respected, official channels and roles must be observed to maintain structure and avoid unintended misinterpretations.

“It is important to state that Edo remains a home for all Nigerians, regardless of party affiliation, faith, or creed. As a leader elected to serve every Edo citizen, Governor Okpebholo is committed to politics of inclusivity, not exclusion. His administration is one of bridges, not walls.

“Governor Okpebholo’s passion for service is evident in the transformational work already underway across Edo State. In education, his three-pronged strategy — rebuilding infrastructure, recruiting teachers, and reforming pedagogy — is returning public schools to centers of excellence.

“In agriculture, the cultivation of over 3,000 kilometers of arable land, backed by increased budgetary allocation, is reviving food production and rural enterprise.

“Major road construction projects are reconnecting communities and easing trade and mobility. On security, the governor’s support for anti-cultism and anti-kidnapping legislation, alongside thousands of operational vehicles for security agencies, shows his seriousness in keeping Edo safe.

“These are not the pursuits of a distracted leader. They are the footprints of a man focused on development, driven by duty — because he is involved.

“The beauty of Nigeria’s democracy lies in its plurality — in its allowance for differing voices, divergent views, and shared national aspirations. Governor Okpebholo holds this sacred. He respects every political leader, including Mr Peter Obi, and recognizes the role they play in deepening Nigeria’s democratic space. But, proper protocols must be adhered to by political leaders, including Obi.

“Where misunderstandings arise, it is the responsibility of leaders to clarify, not to condemn. And that is what this moment calls for: clarity. The governor’s comment was not an attack. It was a statement borne out of official protocol, not personal bias.

“Edo is at a defining moment. The mandate given to Governor Okpebholo is not just to build infrastructure but to rebuild trust. As one who listens, learns, and leads, he remains open to every Nigerian willing to see Edo thrive. The inherited issues we face as a state — from youth unemployment to security and education — demand collaboration, not confrontation.

“Let this moment not divide us but deepen our resolve for understanding. Let it remind us that even in disagreement, we must preserve our common humanity.”
