Edo 2024: Monday Okpebholo unveils agenda

Sen. Monday Okpebholo, governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Sept. 21 election in , has pledged to prioritise security, education, health and economy, if elected.

Okpebholo disclosed this during an interactive session with the members of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo Council on Tuesday in Benin.

The governorship candidate, who decried the level of insecurity in the state, promised to declare a state of emergency on security the first day he would assume office.

Okpebholo, who is currently representing Edo Central at the Senate, said he would equally revive the education system in the state.

“There is nothing in the much-talked-about EdoBEST education reform in the state, a better reform is nothing once APC takes over,’’ he said.

The APC flag bearer said he had gone round some schools and uncovered that many schools lacked basic infrastructure.

“Many schools need classrooms and teachers. Regrettably, there is a ratio of two teachers to more than 200 students in some of our schools.

“These are critical areas we will look into when I emerge. We will set the ball rolling with strong education reform,” he said.

He also expressed his plan to revamp the health sector, which he claimed had been in a state of comatose in the last eight years.

Okpebholo insisted that achievements of previous governments must be sustained, saying that government is a continuum.

He bemoaned the increasing debt profile of the state, which had risen from N43 billion to more than N500 billion currently.

“As an IT expert, I will deploy my experience to bring in international investors to the state and not the Memoranda of Understanding which the current government is synonymous with.

Okpebholo hinted that the state would operate its own airline like some states in the country under his watch as governor.

“We are going to see a new Edo. Benin was the capital city during the defunct Midwestern state and also capital for the old Bendel.

“Unfortunately, there is no single flyover bridge in Benin. Go to Calabar, go to Port Harcourt, you will appreciate that we still need a lot of modern infrastructure,” he said.

He promised to provide good environment that would create jobs and other opportunities that would accelerate development.

Senator Monday Okpebholo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Edo State has been reportedly admitted in an undisclosed hospital following an attack on his convoy by suspected political thugs in Benin City.

A policeman in Okpebholo’s convoy was reportedly killed in the attack, while two others sustained injuries.
Godswill Inegbe, Legislative Aide to Okpebholo, in charge of Media & Communication, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday evening.

The statement was posted on several WhatsApp platforms.
Inegbe said the policeman was killed by suspected political thugs who invaded the Benin Airport when the impeached deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, and the APC governorship candidate arrived from Abuja.

He said, “This afternoon, the motorcade of Senator Monday Okpebholo, the APC governorship candidate, was brutally attacked by members of Edo State Security Network and State government-sponsored thugs.

“During the unprovoked brutal attack, three mobile policemen attached to the security detail of Senator Okpebholo were injured with bullets wound, while one of the policemen has been declared dead

Edo Deputy Governor Shaibu, APC guber candidate Okpebholo escape assassination attempt

Edo Deputy Governor, Philip Shuaibu has escaped assassination attempt as a policeman reportedly died when some gunmen attacked him.

The gun battle which was captured in a viral video seen on X was learnt to have occurred between the gunmen said to be the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) and the deputy governor’s convoy.

This was also confirmed in a press statement issued by Shaibu’s media team dated July 18, 2024.

The statement reads: “The Edo State Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, Thursday afternoon, escaped an assassination attempt on his life in Benin City the state capital.

“The attempt on the life of the deputy governor and other VIPs, including supporters who were at the Benin Airport to receive him, was carried out at the Airport exit gate roundabout, near Faith Mediplex.

“The attack orchestrated by state-sponsored thugs and members of the Edo State Security Network (ESSN), witnessed sporadic shootings that left the cheering crowd who had come to welcome the reinstated deputy governor back to Benin, scampering for their dear lives seeking protection from the flying stray bullets.

“However, it took the effort and intervention of security officers to rescue the situation, leaving the state-sponsored thugs and local vilgiantees to run from the spot and allowing the rallying crowd to reconvene.

“Sadly, one gallant police officer attached to the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, whose rode alongside the deputy governor’s convoy, lost his life in the unprovoked brutal attack, with several officers and supporters wounded,” the statement added.

This is coming a day after the ruling of a Federal Court in Abuja, reinstating Shaibu as the Deputy Governor and a directive that the Inspector General of Police should restore his security details following the nullification of his impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly.

The Edo State Police Command is yet to respond to the incident.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate of the state, Monday Okpebholoa lso escaped assassination attempt on Thursday.

  • Edo 2024: The Inegbeniki, Mayaki ‘suitability’ question of Okpebholo’s candidacy (2) – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Edo 2024: The Inegbeniki, Mayaki ‘suitability’ question of Okpebholo’s candidacy (2) – By Ehichioya Ezomon

In the second and last installment of this header – the first part on Monday, July 1, 2024, having dealt with the High Chief Francis Inegbeniki’s angle to the instant issue of “suitability” of Senator Monday Okpebholo for Governor of Edo State – I plead to recall a seemingly anecdotal but factual reporting on March 29, 2024, by Mr John Mayaki, a topshot of the Edo chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Dubbed as a “Media icon,” Mayaki, who’s vowed to work against Sen. Okpebholo (APC, Edo Central), in the September 21, 2024, governorship election, had captured, in lucid, descriptive, and interpretative prose, the arrival of the APC candidate from Abuja, following the primary that returned him to contest for the governorship.

Posted on his Facebook page @JohnMayaki.com on March 30, Mayaki quoted “Distinguished Senator Monday Okpebholo” as expressing his profound gratitude to Edo people for the overwhelming reception accorded him upon his return to Esanland yesterday (March 29) to commence a thank-you tour, saying, “Edo people cannot go outside its shores to borrow a governor,” and that, “somebody who cannot speak his language cannot be an Esan man. A true Esan man is here.”

(That’s a dig at the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Asue Ighodalo, accused by political opponents as not a “homeboy” or Esan or Edo enough because he’s reportedly born, bred, schooled and worked outside Edo State, and can’t communicate in Esan language, as if these are qualifying criteria for Governor. A few of us – I don’t know if Mayaki’s among – wrote several times to condemn the stereotyping of Ighodalo.)

Excerpted below is the Mayaki report on the Okpebholo arrival from Abuja: “In a stirring address to a gathering of supporters and well-wishers, the APC candidate articulated his vision for unity and progress in Edo State.

“May God bless us all… Amen,” Senator Okpebholo began, invoking blessings upon the entire community gathered before him. With a fervent ‘Amen’ echoing through the crowd, the atmosphere was charged with hope and anticipation.

“Okpebholo extended his blessings to the three senatorial districts within Edo State. ‘May God bless you all… Amen,’ he declared, emphasising his desire for divine favour and prosperity to be bestowed upon every corner of the state.

“Speaking directly to the people of Esanland, the Senator invoked the traditional saying, ‘Esan di fure’ (It shall be well with Esanland), expressing his commitment to the welfare and prosperity of the region.

“Turning his attention to Benin, the historic heart of Edo State, the candidate proclaimed, ‘Edo di fure’ (It shall be well with Benin), reaffirming his dedication to the city and its people. The crowd responded with enthusiastic approval, signaling their endorsement of his message.

“Addressing the Afemai region, Senator Okpebholo declared, ‘Afemai di fure’ (It shall be well with Afemai), underscoring his inclusive approach to governance and his commitment to serving all constituents, regardless of geographical boundaries.

“‘We will work in Esanland, we will work in Afemai, and we will work in Benin,’ the candidate proclaimed boldly. And the crowd erupted into applause, affirming their endorsement.

“In a moment of unity and clarity, Senator Okpebholo posed a rhetorical question to the crowd: ‘Are these not what you people want and looking for?’ The resounding response of ‘Yes’ echoed throughout the crowd, affirming their collective desire for positive change and effective leadership.

“Concluding his address, the APC candidate asserted, ‘Edo State cannot be held to a standstill again…’ and there was a resounding ‘yes,’!

“Earlier, his (Okpebholo’s) convoy made its way from Abuja to Ikabigbo in Etsako West local government area, where he was hosted by the acting Chairman of the party, Emperor Jaret Tenebe. He later proceeded to Esanland, where a jubilant crowd welcomed him at Irrua and accompanied him all the way to his private residence.

“His kinsmen lined the roads from Irrua, enthusiastically waving and expressing their joy. The motorcade from Edo North did not disembark; they joined in the welcome frenzy. This marks the Senator’s first visit to his hometown after his declaration as the APC candidate.”

Of course, some would argue that Mayaki’s doing his professional job as a reporter. But would he’ve done a similar beautiful story if it were, for instance, Dr Ighodalo of the PDP or Mr Olumide Akpata of Labour Party (LP), that’d arrived from Abuja and rode in a convoy into a welcoming reception in his hometown since clinching the PDP or LP ticket, as Mayaki, perhaps, still believed in the supremacy of the APC then?

This was barely three months and one week ago, but today, Mayaki, and several chieftains of the APC in Edo State, have “discovered” that Sen. Okpebholo isn’t qualified in terms of character, capacity, competence, congnition, carriage, charisma, eloquence, exposure, political maturity, popularity and vision to be the APC candidate for the September poll!

Let’s look at the reason(s) for Mayaki’s avowal to work against Okpebholo’s election. Mayaki had lined behind Sen. Adams Oshiomhole’s preferred aspirant, Hon. Dennis Idahosa (APC, Ovia Federal Constituency of Edo South), who Okpebholo defeated twice at the controversial primary, which’s upheld by the APC leadership as reflecting the mandate of the party’s voters.

While Oshiomhole successfully negotiated the Deputy Governor’s position for Idahosa, Okpebholo, who named Mayaki as Director (New Media) for the Campaign Council, reportedly met with resistance from APC members, who argued that the Media and Publicity arm of the council should go to another person, as it wasn’t Mayaki’s “birthright” to occupy it again.

Recall that Mayaki’s Senior Special Assistant (Media) to Governor Oshiomhole, and Acting Chief Press Secretary (CPS), for a few months, to Governor Godwin Obaseki, before he’s sacked (Mayaki claimed he resigned) under controversial circumstances.

In rejecting the Okpebholo offer on Sunday, June 9, Mayaki’s ambivalent: That he turned down the job due to the potential impact on his working relationship with a colleague initially penciled for the role, saying he prioritised maintaining a harmonious work environment. Then, he shifted the gear to his “still recuperating from an accident,” and needed time to come back to full steam for the rigours of electioneering.

Finally on Friday, June 14, Mayaki quit the obvious rigmarole, and declared that Okpebholo wasn’t a “sellable material for Governor in the 21st century Edo State,” and that he’d campaign and vote for a candidate on another political platform.

Noting that competence must trump party supremacy, Mayaki said he’s showcasing a candidate who’s an embodiment of “capacity, competence, connections, experience and sincerity to provide the leadership required to tackle the enormous challenges in governance and take the state out of the woods.”

In a prepared message titled, “2024 Governorship Election: Party Supremacy, Competence, and the Future of Edo State” — delivered at the 5th Edition of the ‘John Mayaki Roundtable with Friends in the Media’ at the NUJ Press Centre in Benin City, Mayaki alleged that a factionalised and fragmented APC might not throw up a competent flagbearer (after almost four months of the primary).

Mayaki’s words: “My candidate is the man we can all trust. The man who has networks and connections both home and abroad. The man with ‘moral’ or ethical reputation, not a novice to governance system. This man is not of the APC stock because irrespective of party supremacy, the future of Edo state is more supreme in my heart. My first commitment is to the state while the party is secondary.

“From the communicative to the managerial and cognitive. Does the leader know what to do as a leader at every point in time? Is he always available? Does he have vision and good understanding of what to do? If he does, does he have the required skills and political will to do same? I have accessed (sic) all the candidates and have come to the conclusion that the candidate I will campaign for has all these qualities in abundance.

“The strength of a leader’s vision, the methods he employs in driving the vision, his communication and ensuing goodwill and popularity, all add up. I mean the candidate who has a clear vision and thorough understanding of the mandate he’s seeking for.

“One who has remained focused and committed to taking development to all corners of Edo State and alleviate the sufferings of the people in our various communities. The one who has equally applied the right leadership style and judiciously applied his limited stock in governance.

“For me therefore, I have made up my mind to commit myself to encouraging my numerous supporters across the state, especially in my local government area, ward, and unit, that they vote for the candidate who will best develop the state, regardless of political affiliation. I mean a man who has the carriage, clout and charisma befitting of a governor.”

Politics aside, Okpebholo – and not the “choice” Mayaki’s yet to unveil or any other – is the only candidate in the running for the Edo governorship in 2024, who’s the “moral, ethical reputation, and knowledge of governance system” that the community people of particularly Esanland, and Edo State in general, could identify and associate with for standing by and for them over the years.

The highfalutin qualities Mayaki bandies about his “candidate” are relative, which most politicians or technocrats parade outside of governance, but given the opportunity to wave the same acclaimed magic wand in government, they fall flat, and perform abysmally. Do we need to travel outside Edo State for example of such a dismal performance from a “wonder technocrat” imposed on the people for years now?

To round off this article, it’s beyond belief that Mayaki could label, as a “novice in governance system,” Okpebholo, who’s a Senator, and had years of tutelage under the late “political oracle and kingmaker,” Chief Anthony Anenih, aliased “Mr Fix It” in political circles by friends and foes alike!

While pulling himself up by the bootstraps, Okpebholo combined schooling and business, and made success of both, before going full-time into politics, where he became a “giant killer” – as noted by President Bola Tinubu when he handed the APC flag to Okpebholo and his running mate, Idahosa, on March 18 – who assisted in uprooting an entrenched PDP, and planted, for the first time, the APC in Edo Central since 1999.

Mayaki’s inalienable right to choose a candidate and campaign for them. But on the premise of “suitability” of Okpebholo to be Governor of Edo State, he appears to lack indepth knowledge of current peculiarity of Edo politics – and what propelled Okpebholo to clinch the 2024 governorship ticket.

On his “late discovery” of the quality and governance flaws in Okpebholo, Mayaki’s only acting out the character traits of the typical Nigerian politician, whose first – and only priority – is self-interest, and not the affected promises of fighting for or representation of their people, talkless of the interest of Edo State.

On this score, Mayaki should leave Okpebholo to Edo people, who can tolerate his alleged “lack of capacity, competence, connections, experience and sincerity to provide the leadership required to tackle the enormous challenges in governance and take the state out of the woods,” and concentrate on marketing his “sellable candidate” to the voters for the September 21 election.

  • Edo 2024: Withdraw from governorship race – Okpebholo tells Ighodalo

Edo 2024: Withdraw from governorship race – Okpebholo tells Ighodalo

Sen. Monday Okpebholo, APC Governorship Candidate for Sept. 21 election has hailed the Federal High Court judgement nullifying the primaries that produced the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Asue Ighodalo.

Okpebholo, in a statement on Thursday in Abuja, said the judgment was a clear indication that the APC was the party to beat in the upcoming Sept. 21 Edo governorship polls.

He assured that the people of the state would always come first.

The APC governorship candidate called on the PDP candidate, Ighodalo, to take the path of honour and withdraw from the race, having been misled by PDP stakeholders.

He alleged that the policies of the PDP-led government in Edo, the level of insecurity, unemployment, cultism, perennial floods, bad roads and disregard for traditional institutions was poor.

He claimed that the faith of the PDP candidate was a clear pointer to the failure that awaited the party in the forthcoming Edo governorship election.

“I welcome the court judgment given on Thursday by a Federal High Court in Abuja, the courtnhas saved Edo people of another four years of pains and agonies,” he said.

Okpebholo added that what the PDP called primaries were a far cry, noting that with just two months to a crucial election, it was unable to put its house in order.

He called on Edo people to rally round him and the APC to bring back the lost glory of the state, adding that if elected, his administration would be committed to taking the state to greater heights.

He noted that since the exit of Sen. Adams Oshiomhole as governor of Edo, its people had not had any reason to celebrate.

“This will change in September when the people will take power back through the ballot. Edo has been cut off from the centre for too long.

“We can see this from the level of abandonment, we need to return Edo to the centre and enjoy all the benefits that we truly deserve. We are optimistic.

“With this judgment, Edo people can clearly see that the PDP is a chaotic party and can’t be allowed to continue to lead our dear State.

“With the APC, I assure you of the best, our best is yet to come,” the APC Edo governorship candidate said.

The court, in its ruling, declared as invalid the primary election that produced Ighodalo as PDP governorship candidate.

The primary election conducted on Feb. 22, 2024, was voided on the ground that 378 delegates who were supposed to vote at the primary election were unlawfully excluded.

Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo invalidated the primary election while delivering judgment in a suit instituted by some aggrieved delegates.

The suit was instituted by one Kelvin Mohammed in a representative capacity.

Ekwo held that both the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 and the PDP guidelines were grossly violated in the conduct of the primary election held at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin, Edo capital.

Details of how court declared Edo PDP Governorship Primary unlawful

A Federal High Court Abuja, on Thursday, declared the Feb. 22 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s primary election that produced Asue Ighodalo as party’s candidate in the forthcoming governorship election in Edo as unlawful and unconstitutional.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a judgment, agreed with the plaintiffs’ submission that the primary failed to comply with Sections 82 of the Electoral Act, 2022; the guidelines for the conduct of the poll and Article 50(3) of the party’s constitution.

The judge held that by virtue of the Ad Hoc delegates congress conducted on Feb. 4 and the exclusion of the three plaintiffs and 378 other lawful delegates, making 381 delegates, in the Feb. 22 primary poll, the election was a nullity.

Citing judicial authorities, Justice Ekwo said “it is mandatory for a political party such as the 2nd defendant (PDP) to comply with its constitution.”

Also making allusion to a previous case in Christian vs. Innocent (2023), he said a party must therefore respect and honour its guidelines or constitution.

“Parties are bound by the constitution of Nigeria, the Electoral Act and their own constitution and guidelines.

“Where they act contrary to the provisions of the law and the guidelines which they have enacted for themselves, such actions will be declared invalid,” he quoted.

Justice Ekwo, who said that the Exhibit PDP 1 tendered by the party was bereft of evidence, held that the plaintiffs, through the exhibits tendered, were able to establish their case against the defendants.

“I do not see how Exhibit PDP1 has complied with the provision of Article 5O (3) of the 2nd defendant’s constitution which makes mandatory provision that the Congress for 3 delegates shall be by direct primaries in which all card-carrying members of the party at the ward level shall participate.

“Unlike Exhibits BID 8A to 8L, Exhibit PDP1 does not demonstrate that the said results emanated from direct primaries in which all card-carrying members of the party at the ward level shail participate.

“There is therefore, no evidence that Exhibit PDP1 complied with the provision of the 2nd defendant’s constitution.

“It has always been the law that where a statute or statutory instrument provides for a mode or method of doing a thing, non-compliance with such a prescribed mode or method goes to the root of the matter and it affects the foundation.

“The lapse is beyond mere irregularity, and it is ultra vires. In other words, it is null and void and of no effect,” he said.

The judge said that from the exhibit presented by the PDP, he found that the returning officers who prepared the result sheets only sat down in a place to manufacture the outcome.of the poll.

He said Adeyemi Ajibade, SAN, the National Legal Adviser of the party, who gave information to the deponent in their counter affidavit, was not an eye witness of the ward congress purportedly conducted by the PDP.

He also said the deponent, Nanchang Ndam, a litigation secretary in the PDP Directorate, was also not an eye witness.

“Not being persons on ground at the time that the said congress was held, A. K. Ajibade, SAN who gave information to the deponent failed to state his source of information.

“Be that as it may, I have noted upon studying Exhibit PDP1 of the 2nd defendant, that the said Result Sheets do not qualify as Ward Congress Result Sheets going by the provision of Article 1 (b) (i) of the Electoral Guidelines for Primary Elections of 22nd February, 2024 of the 2nd defendant which makes it for each Ward Chapter of the Party to elect three (3) Ward Ad-Hoc Delegates at a Special Ward Congress.

“Where election of delegates in a Ward Congress is in issue, the only credible evidence is the Result Sheet of the Congress of each Ward Chapter of the party where such congress was held and not ‘Summary of Result Sheets for Elected 3 Ad Hoc Ward Delegates’ by Local Government Areas which the 2nd defendant has tendered in this case.

“I find that the said ‘Summary of Result Sheets for Elected 3 Ad Hoc Ward Delegates’ (Exh. PDP1) are hurriedly manufactured documents leaving quite a brazen trial of their illegalities.

“What happened here is that two people sat down and wrote and signed some of the Result Sheets and in the process failed to signed some together and outrightly failed to sign other sheets.

“As for the unsigned documents, the law is clear that unsigned documents command no judicial validity and have no evidential or probative value,” the judge said.

Three aggrieved ad-hoc delegates, for themselves and on behalf of the 378 others, had sued the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the PDP, its national secretary and the vice chairman, south south as 1st to 4th defendants respectively.

In the originating summons marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/165/2024 dated Feb. 7 but filed Feb 8, the plaintiffs put four questions for determination and sought for two orders.

The number four question read: “Whether by virtue of the provisions of Article 50(3) of the constitution of the 2nd defendant, an exclusion of the plaintiffs and other lawfully elected delegates whose names and election results appear on Exhibits BID 8A to 8L, from participating in the scheduled governorship primary election of the 22nd of February, 2024 by the defendants, such primary election can be said to be lawful, valid, legitimate or constitutional?”

Delivering the judgment, Justice Ekwo answered the number four question posed by the plaintiffs in affirmative.

“Consequently, I find that the case of the plaintiffs succeeds on the merit upon preponderance of evidence as required by law.

“Before I answer the questions formulated by the plaintiffs, there is need to say that question 1 did not adduce evidence on it.

“I answer the other questions as follows: Question 2 in the affirmative; question 3 in the negative, and question 4 in the affirmative.

“I enter judgement on the terms as follows:

“A declaration is hereby made that by virtue of the provisions of Article 50 (3) of the Constitution of the 2nd defendant (as amended in 2017), the plaintiffs together with the other lawfully elected delegates, whose names and election results appear on Exhibits BID 8A to 8L herein, are the lawfully elected Ward Congress Delegates in their respective wards and by virtue of which the defendants cannot exclude them from participating as 3 Ad-Hoc Ward Delegates at the governorship primary election of Edo State slated for the 22 of February, 2024 or any other date.

“An order is hereby made directing the defendants who are bound by the provisions of Section 82 of the Electoral Act, 2022 and Article 50 (3) of the 2nd defendant’s constitution (as amended in 2017) to abide by the outcome of the 3 Ad-Hoc Delegates Ward Congress of February 4, 2024, at which the plaintiffs and the other 378 delegates, whose names and election results appear on Exhibits BID 8A to 8L were elected and to allow the plaintiffs and the 375 other lawfully elected delegates participate in the primary election of February 22, 2024.

“An order of Mandatory Injunction is hereby made restraining the 1st, 2nd, 3rd defendants from unlawfully excluding the plaintiffs and the other lawfully elected delegates whose names and election results appear on Exhibits BID 8A to 8L herein, from participating as 3 Ad-Hoc Ward Delegates in the governorship election primaries of the 2nd defendant slated for the 22nd of February, 2024 or any other date.

“This is the order of this court,” the judge said.

Earlier, Justice Ekwo also held that, though INEC, the 1st defendant, filed a memorandum of appearance in the suit, it was unfortunate that the commission did not file any process in the case.

According to the judge, the 1st defendant counsel only said the commission will be bound by the decision of the court.

“There is need to say that it is not helpful to the cause of justice for the 1st defendant (INEC) who by virtue of its statutory and constitutional functions and power to observe and monitor conventions, congresses and meetings of political parties and to keep records of the activities of all registered political parties, does file process nor actively take part in proceedings in order to assist the court.

“Where the law gives power, duty or function to a person, the expectation of the law is that such a person shall exercise such power and perform such duty or function creditably and lawfully, and shall take responsibility where such is required.

“Let me stop here. I know that the 1st defendant has heard me well,” the judge said.

The 381 delegates are those loyal to Philip Shaibu, the impeached deputy governor.

Edo 2024: Okpebholo vows to correct Obaseki’s wrongs

Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Sept. 21 governorship election in Edo, Sen. Monday Okpebholo has said he will right the wrongs of Gov. Godwin Obaseki-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration, if elected.

Okpebholo said this in a statement issued  by his media office on Thursday in Abuja.

“Our administration will right the many wrongs of the PDP administration and ensure that Edo is governed with a human face.

“We deserve more and my administration will provide that.

“If elected as governor, my administration will behave differently. Beyond the minimum wage, we will look at other priority areas for civil servants, like quality healthcare, housing and proper transportation.

“I call on Edo people not to be disturbed; help is on the way.”he said.

He asked  Gov. Godwin Obaseki to explain how he spent  the N5 billion approved by the Federal Government as palliatives to cushion the hardship of civil servants in the state.

The candidate recalled that President Bola Tinubu ,had in 2023, approved N5 billion for each state and the FCT to enable them provide interventions to ease hardships in their respective states.

He alleged that the governor had not spent the money for the purpose for which it was meant, saying he was rather  keeping the money to prosecute the Sept.21 election.

Okpebholo  also described Obaseki’s recent increment of minimum wage from N40,000 to N70, 000  for workers in the state as a Greek gift.

He said: “Obaseki is actually owing Edo civil servants arrears of six months. Like other states, Edo got N5 billion from the Federal Government to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal.

“In FCT, civil servants were paid additional N35,000 for six months.

“Other states did the same thing and distributed palliatives to them. In Edo, Obaseki has been mute. No civil servant got any extra money like their counterparts in other states.”

He said that civil servants deserve a better deal from the state government and that the N70,000 minimum  wage  announced by the governor was  to mask his failures and trick Edo people to vote for “a  failed party” in September.

JUST IN: Okpebholo wins Edo APC Governorship Ticket

Senator Monday Okpebholo has been declared winner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship primaries in Edo State.

The Chairman of the election committee and the Governor of Cross River State, Bassey Otu announced the final result of the exercise in Benin after the collating results from 18 Local Government Areas.

Okpebholo pulled a 12,433 votes to defeat 11 other aspirants who contested the primary election.

The ruling party sacked Governor of Imo State, Sen. Hope Uzodinma as the chairman of Edo Governorship Primary Election Chairman.

His removal may not be unconnected with a rancorous primary election conducted last Saturday by Uzodinma which saw the emergence of three different aspirants as the winners.

In his place, the party has appointed the Governor of Cross River state, Senator Bassey Otu to oversee the rerun election scheduled for Thursday.

The party in a statement issued Wednesday by the National Organizing Secretary, Sulaiman Muhammad Argungu announced seven-man committee to conduct the rerun ordered by the party.
