Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has said the State will soon set up a committee to identify specific schools eligible for handover to missionary organizations across the state.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Fred Itua, the governor announced this when Bishop Gabriel Dunia of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi visited him on Monday in Benin.

Okpebholo said schools currently under renovation by the state government would remain under its supervision until all rehabilitation works were completed.

Some of such institutions include: Our Lady of Fatima College, St. Angela’s Grammar School, and St. John Grammar School, among others.

Earlier, Bishop Dunia stated that previous governments allegedly failed to respond positively to multiple appeals by the Church for the return of its educational institutions.

He emphasised that the schools were vital for both academic excellence and the moral upbringing needed to shape responsible, value-driven citizens in society.

Gov Okpebholo gifts Edo LGA chairmen SUVs with condition

Governor Monday Okpebholo has presented 17 brand new 2025 model SUVs to local government chairmen in the State to enhance grassroots service delivery statewide, but with a condition attached.

Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, said Okpebholo was joined by the Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa and other top officials at the presentation event on Saturday in Benin.

He quoted Okpebholo to have emphasised that his administration would not interfere with local government funds, adding that he allowed councils to drive development at the grassroots without constraints.

He criticised the previous administration for sidelining local governments, adding that his government recognised and empowered council chairmen with tools like the new SUVs to enable function better.

Okpebholo expressed gratitude to God for enabling chairmen to now enjoy brand new vehicles, describing it as a sign of progress in Edo.

He said the new development was unfolded under President Bola Tinubu, stressing that Edo would soon rival cities like Lagos and Abuja in terms of growth.

The governor gave the condition, warning that the SUVs were not for personal use but strictly for public service. He vowed to monitor their use across the local governments in the State.

He added that council funds were untouched by the state, adding that performance would be measured based on visible outcomes aligned with financial allocations.

The Commissioner for Local Government, Lucky Eseigbe, praised Okpebholo for upholding local government autonomy and ensuring accountability and transparency in council operations.

Eseigbe noted the positive impact of the autonomy, highlighting new infrastructure like newclassrooms, roads, and healthcare centres across the 18 local government areas.

According to him, this is the first time in Edo’s history that brand new SUVs 2025 model were purchased for all local government chairmen.

  • Appeal Court verdict: Ighodalo heads to Supreme Court

Appeal Court verdict: Ighodalo heads to Supreme Court

The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Thursday, affirmed the election of Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the governor of Edo and winner of the election held on September 21, 2024.

A three-member panel of the court, in a unanimous judgment, held that the appeal by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, was unmeritorious.

Justice Olabode-Abimbola Adegbehingbe, who delivered the lead judgment, held that the appellants failed to show that the election tribunal erred in its decision and proceeded to affirm the judgment of the tribunal delivered on April 2.

Justice Adegbehingbe also held that the tribunal was right to hold that the petitioners did not prove their allegations of non-compliance and over voting.

The judge equally held that the evidence of 19 witnesses, called by the appellants at the tribunal, were insufficient to prove the allegations, adding that they failed to call relevant witnesses from the polling units complained about.

“The case of the petitioners (appellants) was inadequately presented by calling only 19 witnesses, most of whom did not witness what happened at the polling units,” he said.

Justice Adegbehingbe noted that 14 out of the 19 witnesses called by the respondents at the tribunal, gave evidence about what they did not witness, having not been present at the polling units when the election was held.

He added that it was impossible for the appellants to prove over voting when they failed to tender voters register.

In partly allowing the cross appeal filed by Okpebholo, Justice Adegbehingbe set aside the decision by the tribunal, admitting the 133 Bi-modal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines tendered by the appellants in their bid to prove over voting.

The judge said the BVAS machines were wrongly admitted having been tendered from the bar by the appellants’ legal team.

He further held that the tribunal was in grave error when it admitted the BVAS machines that were tendered from the bar in the absence of a prior consent of parties.

The judge said: “The condition precedent to the admission of exhibits from the bar, which is concession, was absent.

“The 133 BVAS machines were wrongly admitted in the manner adopted by the tribunal.”

The judge added that the admission of the BVAS machines was a miscarriage of justice.

He proceeded to set  it aside and expunged the BVAS from the record of  the tribunal.

Justice Adegbehingbe also struck down some part of the petition filed before the tribunal by Ighodalo and the PDP for being defective.

Meanwhile, Ighodalo and the PDP have vowed to challenge the decision of the Court of Appeal at the Supreme Court.

A chieftain of the PDP, who was in  court, said their legal legal team had been instructed to immediately lodge an appeal before the apex court.

“Accept the judgment and allow the sleeping dogs of the election to lie,” Wike said.

Gov Okpebholo reacts after Appeal Court victory

Senator Monday Okpebholo has opened up after the Court of Appeal affirmed his election as the bonafide Governor of Edo State on Thursday.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Appeal Court, in its judgement, upheld the earlier tribunal ruling, validating the mandate of Governor Okpebholo.

In a statement in Benin, Okpebholo praised the judiciary’s integrity, describing the ruling as a victory not just for All Progressives Congress (APC) but for democracy and rule of law in Edo, adding the verdict reaffirmed the will of Edo people

The Edo State Governor, meanwhile, urged the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the election, Asue Ighodalo to accept the judgment and embrace unity for the progress of the State.

He signalled all political actors in Edo, especially Ighodalo, to set politics aside for the progress of the State.

He urged Ighodalo and the opposition to reflect deeply on the judgement, adding that prolonged litigation distracts the incumbent from delivering good governance to the people.

Okpebholo reaffirmed his open-door policy, stating that Edo’s development remained the top priority, above partisan interest or political affiliations.

“Now is the time for statesmanship, he said, noting that the legal process has been exhausted, and the verdict was final and binding,” he said.

The governor noted that he remained committed to his people’s first agenda, focusing on infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic empowerment across the state.

He called on citizens to remain peaceful and law-abiding, promising that his administration would intensify its people-centered development programmes with renewed energy.

With the legal battle now settled, Okpebholo reiterated that his government was ready to serve all Edo residents without exception or discrimination.

  • BREAKING: Appeal Court affirms Okpebholo governor

BREAKING: Appeal Court affirms Okpebholo governor

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, on Thursday, affirmed Mr Monday Okpebholo as duly elected governor in the Sept. 21, 2024 governorship election held in Edo.

The court, in a judgement by a three-member panel led by Justice M. A. Danjuma, dismissed an appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, to challenge the election outcome.

The appellate court held that it found no reason to dislodge the May 15 judgement of the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which validated the declaration of Gov. Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the poll.

However, Ighodalo has vowed to appeal the judgement at the Supreme Court.

Justice Wilfred Kpochi-led three-member panel had dismissed the petitions by the PDP and its candidate; the Action Alliance (AA) and its National Chairman, Adekunle Rufai Omoaje; as well as a case that was brought before it by the Accord Party (AP) and its own candidate, Dr. Bright Enabulele.

The tribunal described the petitions as “lacking in merit.”

The tribunal held that it found no reason to nullify the outcome of the governorship election declared in favour of the APC and its candidate, Okpebholo.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had declared that Okpebholo of the APC secured a total of 291, 667 votes to defeat his closet rivalry, Ighodalo of the PDP, who got a total of 247, 655 votes.

Dissatisfied with the result, the petitioners approached the tribunal, alleging that the election was not conducted in substantial compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.

In the petition marked: EPT/ED/GOV/02/2024, PDP and its candidate alleged that governor Okpebholo did not secure the highest number of lawful votes that were cast at the election.

It was equally the contention of the petitioners that INEC failed to serialise and pre-record some of the sensitive materials that were deployed for the poll, a situation they said aided the rigging of the election in favour of the APC and its candidate.

Specifically, PDP and its candidate alleged that there was wrong computation of results in 765 polling units in the state, even as they produced 19 witnesses that testified and tendered exhibits before the tribunal.

  • Tinubu 2027: Okpebholo, Edo PDP in war of words over early campaigns

Tinubu 2027: Okpebholo, Edo PDP in war of words over early campaigns

A war of words has erupted between Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo and the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over early 2027 campaign activities linked to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election.

The disagreement centers around accusations of premature political campaigning and alleged attempts by Governor Okpebholo to gain favor with the Presidency. The PDP praised the Federal Government for distancing itself from unauthorized 2027 campaign billboards, some of which have been linked to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Senator Okpebholo.

In a statement, PDP’s Publicity Secretary, Chris Nehikhare, applauded the Presidency’s move to condemn early re-election campaigns, saying it helps to avoid unnecessary tension in the political space. The PDP accused Okpebholo and the Edo APC of promoting illegal billboards in a bid to win the President’s favor.

“This is a major setback for Senator Okpebholo’s desperate attempt to gain relevance through illegal and reckless political maneuvers,” the PDP said. “The Presidency’s public disapproval of these premature billboards confirms our earlier concerns, exposing the APC’s disregard for the rule of law and national electoral guidelines.”

The PDP emphasized that such actions are a direct affront to Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which clearly states that political campaigns can only begin 150 days before election day.

The party further criticized the APC for embarrassing the people of Edo State and called on the state government to respond to what it described as the Presidency’s clear rejection of their tactics.

In a swift response, Governor Okpebholo’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, described the PDP’s statement as “reckless, misleading, and malicious.” He accused the opposition party of spreading falsehoods and clinging to relevance by attacking the APC-led administration.

“It is unfortunate that the PDP continues to invent lies in a desperate attempt to smear the image of Governor Okpebholo and the progressive work of the APC in Edo State,” Itua said. “This is nothing more than the frustrated ranting of a party that has lost credibility and is fighting to stay in the political spotlight.”

Itua also called out the PDP’s hypocrisy, accusing the party of repeatedly violating the rule of law during its time in power, while now pretending to uphold constitutional values for political gain.

“The same PDP that trampled on democratic norms and ran a government of impunity has no moral authority to speak about the Electoral Act or constitutional order,” he added.

  • BREAKING: APC’s Okpebholo crushes Ighodalo at Edo Tribunal

BREAKING: APC’s Okpebholo crushes Ighodalo at Edo Tribunal

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal had dismissed the case filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and it’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo challenging the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

TheNewsGuru reports that the three-member tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, held that while substantial non-compliance was demonstrated, the burden of proof rests solely with the petitioners (PDP, Ighodalo) —and cannot be shifted to the respondents (Okpebholo, APC).

TNG understands that Petitioners had initially argued that the September 21st election was marred by non-compliance with the Electoral Act and over-voting, rendering the results invalid.

Additionally, allegations that Okpebholo was not duly elected collapsed under scrutiny, with evidence failing to substantiate the claims.

Tribunal also held that failure to call polling units agents by the Petitioners (PDP, Asue) in respect of INEC forms tendered was fatal to their case and amounted to dumpling of documents on the Tribunal.

  • Okpebholo’s victory: Edo governorship tribunal set for judgement

Okpebholo’s victory: Edo governorship tribunal set for judgement

The Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal will on Wednesday, deliver judgment in the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, against the Sept. 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo.

The PDP and Ighodalo are challenging the decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare Sen. Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the poll.

They alleged that the election was marred by irregularities.

The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, had, on March 3, reserved judgment in the petition after parties adopted their final written addresses.

The tribunal will deliver  judgment in the three petitions marked: EPT/ED/GOV/01/2024, EPT/ED/GOV/02/2024 and EPT/ED/GOV/03/2024.

The tribunal had, on Jan. 31, admitted in evidence, 148 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System Machines (BVAS) that were used during the conduct of the disputed governorship poll.

The electronic devices were tendered by a Senior Technical Officer in the ICT Department of INEC, Anthony Itodo, and admitted in evidence by the panel.

The petitioners had subpoenaed INEC to produce the BVAS machines that were used in 133 polling units where election results are being disputed.

INEC had declared that Okpebholo of the APC secured a total of 291, 667 votes to defeat his closest rival, Ighodalo of the PDP, who got a total of 247, 655 votes.

Dissatisfied with the outcome of the poll, the PDP and its candidate approached the tribunal, praying it to nullify INEC’s declaration of the APC and Okpebholo as winners of the contest.

The petitioners, among other things, contended that the governorship election was invalid because of alleged non-compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.

However, APC and Okpebholo urged the tribunal to dismiss the petitions for being baseless, arguing that the petitioners had failed to substantiate the allegations in their petitions.
