  • Fresh crisis looms in varsities as non-academic staff unions plan nationwide strike Monday

Another round of strike is looming in the nation’s universities as the leadership of the non-teaching staff of the universities have begun mobilisation of their members nationwide to begin a nationwide strike on Monday, July 15, 2019 over alleged breach of agreements by the government.
The leadership of the non teaching staff told newsmen on Friday in Abuja that top on the list of grievances was the exclusion of its members from the workings of the National University Pension Company (NUPENCO) solely operated by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and the allocation of 80 percent of the money released by the federal government as earned allowances to ASUU while the three non academic staff unions got the remaining 20 percent.
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) operating under the Joint Action Committee said they were rejecting the 20 percent earned allowance allocated to it and called on the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency, release N30 billion to the non teaching staff as earned allowance for the period of 2009 to 2016
SSANU President, Comrade Samson Ugwoke who spoke on behalf of the unions said the Federal Government should be prepared to meet its demands and called on its members to ensure full compliance with the directive in order to show its relevance to the university system.
He said: “The recent sharing of money where the money collected from the ministry of education signed by the director of tertiary education, allocating 80 per cent of the money to ASUU and only 20 per cent to the three non-teaching staff unions is not acceptable to us.
“We reject in total the 20 per cent allocated to our members, rather we demand from the federal government the sum of N30 billion as part of the earned allowance of non teaching staff from 2009 to 2016 l, and we call on government to hasten the audit of university earned allowances so that we will know how much is paid to who and how much remains.
“The way and manner the money is being shared is contrary to any known accounting procedure or any known international best practice. It should be condemned by all, this house calls it a fraud and calls for investigation.
“We call and demand that the government should release as a matter of urgency, N30 billion for non-teaching staff.
“JAC has approved protests from the branches, protests at the zonal levels of our unions and mother of all protests in Abuja for three days before a deadline is given to the government for the mother of all strikes that will follow. The protest will commence on Monday 15th July 2019”.

Lagos begins demolition of shanties, structures under high tension Monday

The Lagos State Government will begin the demolition of structures and shanties under high tension cables in Lekki area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, on Monday.
Officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA embarked on sensitisation tour in Lekki, Eti-Osa Local Government Area on Tuesday to tell affected people to vacate the dangerous area latest by Sunday as government would hit the area on Monday to get rid of the structures.
Most of the structures to be affected were those belonging to car dealers, shopping complexes and other structures built directly under the tension cables.
LASBCA officials said notices had already been served occupants of the area before now and that government wanted to remind them that they had seven days to quit the area and that by Monday, it would swing into action.
Head of Department, Building Administration and Public Enlightenment, LASBCA, Mrs. Victoria Taiwo-Ajose, during the sensitization campaign, said that government did not want people to lose their lives by staying under high tension and doing businesses.
According to her, it was disheartening that most Lagosians prioritise their businesses more than their lives, wondering why any reasonable citizens could choose to locate their businesses under deadly tension cables.
“It is dangerous to stay under high tension cables, anything can happen anytime. So they should vacate the place. The places where they built is meant for the setback created for the high tension cables. We have warned Lagosians not to live or carry out businesses under high tension cables. We will commence demolition of any structure found under the high tension cables,” she said.
Taiwo-Ajose said government would not allow disaster to occur in the area before doing the needful, warning business owners to vacate under tension cables before Monday.
However, the sensitisation campaign was carried out by LASBCA officials in conjunction with officials of the Ministry of Information and Strategy.
The government officials toured the area distributing leaflets, urging residents to build right and not engage in illegality.

FG to inaugurate SEC board Monday

The Federal Government will on Monday inaugurate the board of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to be chaired by Mr Olufemi Lijadu.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the board’s constitution is coming four years after President Muhammadu Buhari sacked the former SEC board headed by Mr Peter Obi.

A senior management source who pleaded anonymity confirmed the constitution and inauguration to NAN in Lagos.

The source said that the inauguration would take place at the Ministry of Finance Headquarters, Abuja, and would be conducted by the permanent secretary.

The source said that Lijadu, who hails from from Ogun, had been announced as the commission’s chairman.

According to him, other members of rhe board include Mr Lamido Yuguda from Gombe State (Non-executive Commissioner), Mrs Rekiya Ladi (Kaduna) Non-executive Commissioner and Mr Okokon Ekanem, representing Ministry of Finance.

The others include Dr Alvan Ikoku, representing the Central Bank of Nigeria, Ms Mary Uduk, SEC’s Acting Director-General, and Mr Henry Rowlands, SEC’s Acting Executive Commissioner, Corporate Services.

NAN reports that President Muhammadu Buhari dissolved the previous board on July 16, 2015, and set up an eight-man panel headed by a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Babachir Lawal, two months later, to reconstitute it.

Market operators had been calling for the reconstitution of the board to strengthen SEC’s operations.

The Chief Operating Officer, InvestData, Mr Ambrose Omordion, told the News Agency of Nigeria that non-reconstitution of the board for over three years had implications for operational efficiency of the apex capital market regulator.

He said that the situation was affecting some operational activities of the commission, thereby dampening investor confidence.

Omordion told NAN that SEC needed to be strengthened with appointment of board of directors for its growth and the development of the capital market.

Omordion, who commended Uduk for achievements recorded so far in the commission in spite of being in acting capacity, called for her confirmation.

He said that the management team of the commission should be confirmed by the government with immediate effect to avoid excesses in the market.

Uber set to increase fares from Monday

Uber passengers will be charged an extra £1 for journeys in London’s congestion zone from next week.

The popular taxi service said that the additional funds will contribute to the £11.50 daily fee its drivers must pay when entering the congestion zone in the city centre.

From Monday, a £1 surcharge will be added to all trips that enter the busy central zone, even though the charge only applies between 7am and 6pm on weekdays.
