Nigeria spends more money servicing debts, NASS, subsidy than on education – Ex-Kano Emir Sanusi

A former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, has slammed the Federal Government for failing to prioritise education in the country.

According to him, one out of every six children are out of school in Nigeria.

He said this at the 27th National Economic Summit in Abuja on Tuesday, adding that the leadership has to understand the need for development, especially in the education sector.

“Where you are dealing with a country where 40% of the population is living in extreme poverty or 1 out of every 6 children in the world are out of school in this country, you cannot fix this problem without having a leadership that understands what development is,” the ex-CBN governor said.

“Where are we spending our money? Does the Nigerian state even consider development as a critical priority? Forget the noise; where are we spending our money?

“We spend more money on debt service, fuel subsidy, overheads, and the National Assembly than on education. We’re spending less money on education and healthcare than countries like Ghana are spending. We’re spending less money on R&D than countries like Kenya and Rwanda,” he added.

According to him, if Nigeria does not understand that development is about human beings, everything will fall by the wayside.

“So, the biggest accelerator is political; having a political leadership that understands that the state should be a developmental state and not a populist state,” he explained.

Oyedepo curses future leader of his church who borrows money

Presiding Bishop, Living Faith Worldwide, David Oyedepo has placed a curse on any future leader of his church who attempts to borrow money on behalf of the church.

Oyedepo, in a sermon on Sunday said “imagine if we were a borrowing church, we would have borrowed ourselves out.

”The banks will be at all our entrances fighting over who will collect this side and who will collect the other one.

”God delivered me and this mission from any temptation of borrowing before we had the need to borrow..by light. You cannot serve 2 masters he said, you have to choose one and despise the other.

“I said I despise the devil, I choose my Saviour. He is also my provider. We have never borrowed, 40 years have come and God, we have never borrowed,” he said.

According to Oyedepo, “When I am going to heaven I will write it down as a covenant for the future leaders of this Commission that whosever borrows will come under a curse.

”If He brought us to where we are without borrowing, then he must have been possessed by something to go and start borrowing.

Two die in Edo over alleged money ritual practice

Two young men identified as Ebafor Abiye, 25, and Alex Benjamin, 36, on Tuesday died in mysterious situations at the same hospital in Igarra, Edo State.

An eye-witness who recounted the incident on Tuesday said it was a suspected case of ‘money ritual’ gone wrong.

The source said, “Ebafor was with his aunty on Monday night drinking around 9 pm when he suddenly started shouting, ah! see money, plenty, money Alex you are a bad friend, a bad friend. He started behaving hysterically so they were trying to calm him down but he started vomiting blood and that is how he was rushed to the hospital. They got to the hospital at about 10 pm and as the doctor was doing preliminary checks, he started shouting Alex’s name in the hospital again so they wondered if it was the Alex he was mentioning that poisoned him.

“On the other hand, Alex was said to be in the middle of his own incantations when he called his wife who sells fruits by Afekhai Junction in Igarra and told her not to come home after the day’s sale. But his wife did not understand what her husband meant by that and went home after the sales only to meet her husband stretching and talking incoherently.

The source continued, “She called neighbours who helped rush him coincidentally to the same hospital where Ebafor was. At the hospital, the two men started behaving the same way and in less than five minutes, they both died.

It was gathered that when his wife went home to fetch a cloth to cover him that she saw fire and a coffin on the floor of their room. Also, when Ebafor’s room was searched, there were several charms scattered on the floor.

As at the time of filing this report, the police are said to have evacuated the corpses but that the Igarra community maintained that they remove the charms discovered in their houses.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of Edo State Police Command, Bello Kontongs said he was yet to get a full briefing of the incident.

CBN gives fresh warning, says Naira abusers to spend 6 years in jail

The Central bank of Nigeria has warned that that abusers of the naira at social events risk imprisonment or an imposition of fine.

The CBN noted in a statement issued on Tuesday that according to the bank’s 2007 amended Act, ‘spraying of, dancing or matching on the Naira or any note issued by the Bank during social occasions or otherwise howsoever shall constitute an abuse and defacing of the Naira or such note and shall be punishable under the law by fines or imprisonment or both’

Findings revealed that the Act prescribed imprisonment for six months and or a N50,000 fine for anyone defacing or abusing the naira at social functions.

The statement, which was signed by the Acting Director, Corporate Communication, Osita Nwanisobi, was titled ‘CBN, police, others to prosecute abusers of Naira’.

The CBN also warned that abusers of naira notes would be prosecuted by the financial regulator in collaboration with other regulatory bodies such as the Nigeria Police, Federal Inland Revenue Service, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.

It said that the warning was necessitated by the activities of some people who flagrantly abused the legal tender at social functions.

The statement read in part, “The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria has again been drawn to the activities of persons, who flagrantly abuse the legal tender by hurling wads of Naira notes in the air and stamping on the currency at social functions.

“There have also been cases where people mishandle the Naira, deface it, hawk the currency at parties and reject the currency in some instances.

Naira abuse: CBN to try offenders in mobile court
“It should be stated that, contrary to the practice of these unpatriotic persons, it is neither cultural nor moral, for people to disrespect the currency which citizens trade in.

For the avoidance of doubt, Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 (As amended) stipulates that ‘spraying of, dancing or matching on the Naira or any note issued by the bank during social occasions or otherwise howsoever shall constitute an abuse and defacing of the Naira or such note and shall be punishable under the law by fines or imprisonment or both’.

“Accordingly, the Central Bank of Nigeria is collaborating with the Nigeria Police, Federal Inland Revenue Service, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit to address the unpatriotic practice.”

The CBN therefore warned Nigerians, particularly those at social functions such as birthdays, weddings and funerals, to desist from disrespecting the Naira or risk being arrested by law enforcement agencies.

  • What I told a governor when he gave me envelope containing money – Oyedepo

What I told a governor when he gave me envelope containing money – Oyedepo

Founder, Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo has revealed what he told a governor who gave him an envelope containing money.

Oyedepo spoke during his sermon on Sunday in Ogun State..

He said in 1990, a governor gave him an envelope and that he asked him if it was his money or stolen money, because he would never partake in stolen money.

“One lady came from Switzerland many years ago, we were in Kaduna, I have told you that story before. She was cumbered with troubles and said, “Sir, please pray for me and I will give you an offering.”

“When I pounced on her, she froze. I said, “if you are not blind, you will know I am richer than you.” 1987

“A governor gave me an envelope here 1990. I said, “I hope it is your money”: you will find it in my various documents. He puts his name there, he said, “Sir, it is my money.”

“Not that I opened it and it was small. How dare you? Give me something! To do what with it? Operating in the reality of your future. You are not begging issues. I can’t partake of your stolen stuff. Glory to God,” he said as captured by Church Gist.

According to Oyedepo, “Many people have been blessing this Church that are not partakers of such money and the only way to keep seeing that happen is to tie yourself with God and then you find favour from God flowing in your direction.”

  • The root of all evil – Femi Aribisala

    By Femi Aribisala

Is it good to go to school; get a good job; build your own house and have lots of money? Not according to Jesus. These things are highly valued by men. But Jesus teaches that: “What is highly valued among men is detestable in God’s sight.” (Luke 16:15).

Therefore, it is not surprising that Jesus had none of these accomplishments as a man. He did not go to school. He was a lowly carpenter. He did not build His own house. He was not a rich man.

In Jesus’ doctrine, the cares of this life are the preoccupations of Satan and men. This makes them offensive to God. Jesus told Peter: “Get behind me, Satan! You are an offense to me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.” (Matthew 16:23).

This means the things of men are the things of Satan. Jesus asked the chief priests of the Jews: “The baptism of John- where was it from? From heaven or from men?” (Matthew 21:25). If it is from heaven, then it cannot be from men.

    God is good

Jesus says: “No one is good but One, that is, God.” (Matthew 19:17). This means only the things about the kingdom of God can be good. Everything about this world is evil. Those things that preoccupy us; going to school, getting good jobs, building houses, and making money, all pertain to this world and, as such, are evil and not of God.

God’s kingdom is not of this world. (John 18:36). Indeed, everything earthly is a human alternative to the will of God in heaven. Continued devotion to the things of this world militates against our desire to be with the Father in heaven and is therefore evil.

Jesus says to His disciples: “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke 11:13).

This indicates He sees men as evil. To be good, men, who Jesus also categorises as “the sons of this world,” have to become “the sons of light;” another word for sons of God. Sons of men must receive from Jesus the power to become sons of God. (John 1:12-13).

This requires all our affinities to men and to this world to be relinquished in favour of God and the kingdom of heaven. These include allegiances to the fatherland, to family and relatives, and race, sex, and creed.

Jesus is categorical: “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:26). He says furthermore: “Whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:33).

    Relative and absolute evil

Men are consumed by the love of life, leading us to regard anything that threatens our life as evil. This makes us define evil erroneously in relative terms. If the enemy kills us, he is evil; but if we kill him, we are good.

However, God sees evil in absolute terms.

Jesus regards as evil anything that undermines God’s will. This makes man’s life the greatest evil of all. The love of life, expressed in our determination to enhance, promote, and safeguard our temporal condition, commands our allegiance even above the first and greatest commandment to love God with all our heart.

Therefore, Jesus regards man’s love of life as the root of all evil and the basis of every sin. Indeed, we steal, cheat, fight, kill and commit adultery to save our lives. We only overcome sin by hating our lives.

    Re-definition of evil

Jesus reveals that the love of life makes men enemies of God. He tells us that God has made the hatred of life in this world the primary prerequisite for the attainment of eternal life. Jesus says: “He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life” (John 12:25).

Thereby, Jesus redefines evil. Since men esteem their lives more than anything else, Jesus defines everything that diminishes our life in this world as good. He requires us to take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions and in distresses. For when we are weak, then we are strong. (2 Corinthians 12:10).

Poverty becomes a blessing. Jesus says: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.” (Luke 6:20). He also categorises adversities as a blessing: “Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.” (Luke 6:21).

He says: “Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.” (Luke 6:22).

Correspondingly, Jesus tells us not to bother to resist evil anymore: “I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.” (Matthew 5:39). He insists we must love our enemies: “I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. (Matthew 5:44).

Moreover, Jesus says we should not fear death: “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.” (Luke 12:4). Death becomes something good because it leads to our reunification with the Father in heaven: “If you loved me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father.’” (John 14:28). But life is evil because it keeps us away from God.

    Evil misnomer

The problem with the love of life is that men are unaware that it is sinful. If we love life, we will automatically love sin. The love of life militates against the love of God. It blinds men to the truth about good and evil.

Indeed, we define our righteousness by the extent to which we love and promote life; the very thing God hates. To understand good and evil from God’s perspective, we must first break free from the bondage of the love of life.

The love of life prompts us to eat from the God-forbidden tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Everything we make and do has evil and good in it simultaneously. Every good medicine for healing sicknesses has bad side effects. The plane that carries us from Cape to Cairo sometimes falls from the sky and crashes.

We make so-called “evil things” like the atom bomb and the machine gun; and “good things” like the airplane and the aspirin. But both our “good” and “bad” products are evil in God’s sight because they are of the world and not of God.

Accordingly, John counsels: “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world- the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does- comes not from the Father but from the world.” (1 John 2:15-16).
