Russia’s president, Putin congratulates India on Moon landing feat

The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin has hailed India’s achievement as the first nation to land a spacecraft on the Moon’s south pole, days after Moscow’s own mission crashed.

Putin sent his “heartfelt congratulations” to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi according to the Kremlin’s website.

“This is a big step forward in space exploration and, of course, a testament to the impressive progress made by India in the field of science and technology,” the Kremlin statement read.

Recall that  Russia’s own Moon lander — the first in almost 50 years — had crashed after an incident during pre-landing manoeuvres last weekend.

Russian space agency Roscosmos has vowed to stay in the lunar race, amid a renewed push for exploration that has drawn in both the world’s top space powers and new players.

“Roscosmos congratulates Indian colleagues on the successful landing of the Chandrayaan-3,” Roscosmos said on Wednesday.

“Exploration of the Moon is important for the whole of humanity, in the future it may become a platform for the deeper mastering of space.”

  • China plans to send crewed spacecraft to moon by 2030

China plans to send crewed spacecraft to moon by 2030

China plans to send two rockets to the moon by 2030, one carrying the spacecraft that will land on the surface and the other transporting the astronauts.

Both the rockets will enter the moon’s orbit and after a successful docking the astronauts will enter the lunar lander to descend onto the moon’s surface, state media reported on Wednesday, citing a China Manned Space Agency engineer.

The twin-rocket plan would overcome China’s longstanding technological hurdle of developing a heavy-duty rocket powerful enough to send both astronauts and a lander probe.

After the astronauts have completed their scientific tasks and collected samples, the lander will transport the astronauts back to the orbiting spacecraft, on which they will return to Earth, said Zhang Hailian, deputy chief engineer at the China Manned Space, at a summit in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.

The race to send people to the moon has intensified in recent years with both China and the United States are eyeing potential mineral resources on the moon. Establishing lunar habitats could also help support future crewed missions to other planets such as Mars.

China still trails the United States in experience and technology. The last NASA crewed landing was in 1972, and U.S. astronauts are expected to return to the moon by 2025.

To meet China’s lunar objectives, Chinese researchers are developing the super-heavy Long March 10 carrier rocket, a new-generation crewed spacecraft, a lunar lander, and a crewed lunar rover, according to Zhang.

In 2020, China brought back lunar samples from the moon on an uncrewed mission, making China the third nation to have retrieved lunar samples after the United States and the Soviet Union.

Scientists prepare for doomsday with lunar vault

Scientists at the University of Arizona have made preparations for doomsday known, with plans to build an underground lunar ark on the moon.

According to the scientists, the lunar ark would be filled with millions of seed, spore, sperm and egg samples from Earth’s species, hidden in a network of tubes on the moon.

This is with the view to provide a genetic backup for the planet in the event of a doomsday scenario.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the lunar ark, dubbed a “modern global insurance policy, would be hidden in a series of caves and tunnels under the moon’s surface.

CNN quoted the scientists to have said any move to build such a bunker is a long way off.

Meanwhile, a similar doomsday vault known as The Global Seed Vault exists on Earth.

Home to under a million seed samples, it is located on a remote island in Svalbard, an archipelago located between Norway and the North Pole.

  • Sultan declares sighting of moon, says Ramadan begins Friday

Following the sighting of the moon, this year’s Ramadan starts Friday, the Sultan of Sokoto, Saad Abubakar, announced Thursday.

The president of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) said this in an announcement made on an NTA live broadcast.

In compliance with physical distancing by health authorities as means to check the spread of COVID-19, the NSCIA had urged Muslims to shun congregational gatherings by staying at home.

The council also directed mosques to suspend taraweeh sessions (a daily voluntary prayer during the month), tafseer (lectures), Qur’anic fora and i’tifaaf (seclusion in the mosque during the last ten days of Ramadan).

The council’s director of administration, Yusuf Nwoha, who announced this earlier in the day, urged religious leaders to use electronic media to reach their followers.

The group had issued a guideline for the burial of infected Muslims during the pandemic, saying the burial should be handled by officials of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

Ramadan is the ninth lunar month of the Islamic calendar seen as sacred by Muslims for which they refrain from eating, drinking and sexual activities from dawn to dusk for 29 or 30 days — depending on when a new crescent is slighted.

The sighting of this new moon marks the beginning of another month, Shawwal, and the celebration of Islamic festival, Eid-l-fitr.

  • Russia plans to create long-term base on moon

Russia plans to create long-term base on moon

Russia plans to create a long-term base on the surface of the moon as part of its lunar programme and study the satellite with the help of robot avatars, Roscosmos Chief, Dmitry Rogozin. said on Tuesday.

“This is about creating a long-term base, naturally, not habitable, but visited.

“But basically, it is the transition to robotic systems, to avatars that will solve tasks on the moon surface,’’ local media reported.

Rogozin said the first landing of Russian cosmonaut on the moon is scheduled for 2030, though he did not specify how much time it might take to progress from the start of manned flights to the moon to the creation of full-fledged base.

“The Russian programme is more ambitious than what the U.S. did for its lunar programme in the 1960s and 1970s,’’ he said.

The Moon is an astronomical body that orbits planet Earth and is Earth’s only permanent natural satellite.

It is the fifth-largest natural satellite in the Solar system, and the largest among planetary satellites relative to the size of the planet that it orbits.
