    Qatar 2022: Gallant Morocco bows out with fourth place finish

    The Atlas Lions of Morocco today failed to make a podium finish after losing its third place match to one of Europe’s football giants Croatia.

    The Moroccans lost 2-1 to Croatia at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

    2018 finalists Croatia continue to defy the odds with remarkable tournament performances that equaled their illustrious 1998 cohort by wrapping up third place in Qatar.

    In the 7th minute, Croatia’s Gvardiol puts his team ahead with a  powerful header that sent the entire Croatian fans into frenzy.

    However, the Atlas Lions responded almost immediately when Ziyech’s inswinging free-kick was unwittingly looped towards his own goal by the head of Majer, and Dari reacted quickest to head past Livakovic from five yards to score his first international goal for Morocco on the dot of 9 minute.

    However, in the 69th minute ,Mislav Orsic a low drive pass past the Moroccan goalie into the opposite side netting.

    Orsic,  ran round the ball, on the left edge of the area, and floated an exquisite first-time shot across goal with his right foot. It beat the flying Bono, hit the inside of the far post and rebounded into the net.

    The result meant Croatia has finished second and third respectively at the World Cup.

    French striker Olivier Giroud reached out to Morocco coach Walid Regragui after France’s World Cup semifinal win.

    The pair were former teammates at Grenoble.

    Giroud said, “I congratulated him and said that he could be proud of his team.

    “I told him that I would be happy to discuss all this later, that it would be my pleasure to see him again.

    “He is a good person, he deserves all the praise that has been given to him.”

    Hakim Ziyech donates Morocco wages to team’s staff, charity

    Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech won’t take a penny from Morocco’s World Cup run to the final four.

    Ziyech has not pocketed any of the salary that he receives from playing for Morocco.

    The Chelsea midfielder gives all of it away to charities and members of the team’s staff.

    Ziyech, 29, was first capped for Morocco in 2015 and since then he has not kept a single penny, according to journalist Khaled Beydoun.

    He also reports that the former Ajax man is set to make £262,000 from Morocco’s run to the World Cup semi-finals and that all the money will be given to poor people in his homeland.

    According to the Arabic Post, Ziyech hires a private plane every time he is called up to his country’s squad and on his way from London to Africa he picks up some of his team-mates.

    They go on to claim that he has also donated money to amateur football clubs and hospitals in Morocco.

    Qatar 2022: France zooms into World Cup final, beat Morocco 2-0

    World Cup defending champions, the Le Blues of France today zoomed into the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup after defeating Morocco 2-0 at the At Bayt Stadium.

    The French took the lead inside five minutes of the encounter as Theophilus Hernandez scored a beautiful volley to launch France into the lead.

    Antoine Griezmann gets in behind the defence and he cuts the ball back for Kylian Mbappe. The striker shoots as red shirts charge towards him like moths to light but the blocked effort only fell into the path of AC Milan defender, Theo Hernandez who with a high volley put the ball past Bono to give France the lead.

    Theo Hernández is the third defender to have both scored and assisted in a single World Cup tournament with France, after Marius Trésor in 1982 and Bixente Lizarazu in 1998.

    In the 78th Minute, the ball falls for Randal Kolo Muani who with his first touch after being introduced few seconds earlier latched on to a loose ball inside Morocco’s 6 yard box for France’s second goal of the encounter.

    It ended 2-0 in Favour of France.

    This result meant France will play Argentina in the final of the Mundial on Sunday 18th December, 2022, whilst Morocco will slug it out with Croatia for the bronze medal match.

    Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has had an influence on Morocco’s stunning World Cup run to the semi-finals.

    Morocco manager Walid Regragui – managing at native side Wydad AC at the time – attended the Spaniard’s 2021 masterclass via zoom on the Gunners’ 2020 FA Cup win.

    In that call, Arteta broke down Arsenal’s 2-0 FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester City and the behind-closed-doors 2-1 final win over Chelsea.

    According to Tribalfootball, Regragui, 47, listened with intent and was clearly taking notes, as just a year later he is managing in a World Cup semi-final.

    Morocco are the Qatar World Cup’s dark horses, and topped a group consisting of 2018 finalists and fellow semi-finalists, Croatia, as well as Belgium’s golden generation and an impressive Canadian side.

    The North African side then slayed 2010 winners Spain 3-0 on penalties after drawing 0-0 in normal time.

    Portugal came up next in the quarters and Morocco pulled off an unlikely 1-0 win to become the first African country to reach the last four of the competition, going one further than Cameroon 1990, Senegal 2002, and Ghana 2010.

    Impressively, Morocco have conceded just one goal in the winter tournament and it didn’t even come from an opposition player.

    The former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has called for support from Nigerians to give support to the Atlas Lions of Morocco ahead of their semi-final clash against France.

    The former Minister made the call via her social Media page today, Wednesday,

    Ezekwesili made the call on Wednesday in a post via her verified Twitter handle.

    She said all other African countries are also Moroccans, even beyond the field of football.

    She wrote, “We are all Moroccans and playing on that pitch in Doha @ #FIFAWorldCup today.
    For as long as you can check up the map of the world and find the country called Morocco on the continental territory known as Africa, we all are Moroccans today. It’s not just about Football.”

    The highly anticipated match between Les Bleu and the Atlas Lions will take place tonight at 8 pm at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor.

    Brazil legend, Ronaldo Nazario, has said that he wants Morocco to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar this year.

    Ronaldo said Morocco are united, adding that he likes the way the Atlas Lions attack and defend.

    According to him, he was supporting the North Africans at the 2022 World Cup.

    Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Ronaldo said, “I would like them [Morocco] to win the World Cup. Everything is fantastic, how they attack, how they defend, how they are united.

    “And I am enchanted by the joy they have given their people and all of Africa, it is a joy that only football can give.”

    Morocco will tackle France in the World Cup semi-final tie on Wednesday night.

    Qatar 2022: Morocco will make it to the final – Coach Regragui boasts

    The head coach of the Atlas Lion of Morocco, Walid Regragui, has said that his boys will do whatever it takes to reach the 2022 World Cup final at the expense of the Le Blues of France.

    The encounter between Morocco and France will take place at Al Bayt Stadium by 8 pm Nigerian time on Wednesday.

    Regragui warned France that Morocco would do anything to reach the final and win when both teams clash in the World Cup semi-final at Al Bayt Stadium in Doha.

    Morocco defeated World number 2 Belgium and Europe powerhouse Spain and Portugal  Enroute the semi-final  and coach Regragui has now assured of a final place.

    Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Morocco-France fixture, Regragui said (via RMC Sport): “We want to go to the final and win. We are ready to do anything to achieve this goal. We’ll have extraordinary energy tomorrow.

    “Saying that we are satisfied to have reached the semi-finals doesn’t suit us…We are not tired. Tomorrow we are going to race.”

    By virtue of their victory against Portugal, Morocco becomes the first African side ever to reach the Semi-Finals of Senior Men’s football at the World Cup.

    The Moroccan side have only conceded one goal en route semi-final and it was an own goal conceded in their 2-1 win over Canada in their last group game.

    Gusau inaugurates Players Unions’ reconciliation committee

    A five-man panel to finally and fully restore peace to the rank of Nigeria’s retired and active football players was on Monday inaugurated in Abuja, with President of Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau imploring the members to work assiduously towards erasing all forms of misgivings among the game’s major actors and allow Nigeria Football to move forward in peace and tranquility.

    Gusau told the panelists that their mandate, which would last for two months, is to discuss with the two players’ bodies currently operating and settle the differences, while also advising the NFF on how to forge a formidable union that will be acceptable to all retired and active players.

    “I have confidence in this team to put to rest the discord and bickering that we have witnessed among players’ bodies over the past years. There has been an unhealthy proliferation and this is not in the interest of peace and development of the game. We want to put a permanent end to the bitterness and divisive tendencies, so that we can move forward.

    “Last week, I sat down with leaders of the two groups and we deliberated on how to achieve reconciliation and peace. What is really important is recognition, celebration and inclusiveness. We don’t want to alienate anyone. Players are the key actors in the game and we have no reason not to carry them along.”

    The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu is the chairman of the committee, with Mr. Emmanuel Okala, MON, Dr. Felix Owolabi Akinloye, MON and Mr. Garba Lawal as members, and Mr. Abdulrafiu Yusuf as secretary.

    Okala, who was part of the gold-winning Green Eagles squad at the 1973 All-Africa Games that Nigeria hosted, was part of the silver-winning Green Eagles at the 1978 All-Africa Games and was in the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team, was present at the inauguration at the NFF Secretariat, alongside Dr. Owolabi Akinloye, who was part of the 1978 All-Africa Games silver-winning squad and the 1980 AFCON winners, and Abdulrafiu Yusuf, assistant director in the NFF Technical Department.

    NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, lauded the membership of the panel, and expressed confidence that they would be able to resolve the logjam in the terrain of the players’ unions. He thanked them for their noble contributions to Nigeria in the past and said he has no doubt they will still contribute more by enabling peace in the Nigeria game soonest.

    “Morocco has done exceedingly well for Africa at the ongoing FIFA World Cup finals in Qatar. Nigeria is capable of doing likewise and even better if we have a peaceful atmosphere in which all stakeholders work towards a common, noble goal,” Sanusi said.

    Responding on behalf of the committee, His Excellency, Comrade Philip Shaibu said the panel will work with boundless energy and sincerity of purpose to ensure seamless reconciliation of the unions, and come up with an acceptable solution. He reiterated that the principal interest of the committee is to see Nigeria Football attain higher heights, and that recognition and appreciation of the game’s actors cannot be discounted.

    Also present at the occasion were NFF Deputy General Secretary, Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme; Director of Finance and Administration, Mr. E. C. Kadiri; Director of Technical, Mr. Augustine Eguavoen and; Director of Communications, Mr. Ademola Olajire.

    Qatar 2022: Buhari hails Morocco ahead of clash against France

    President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the Moroccan national team, the Atlas Lions and the ruler of the country, King Mohammed the VI for making history at the ongoing World Cup in Qatar.

    In a congratulatory message issued by his spokesperson, Malam Garba Shehu on Monday in Abuja, Buhari lauded the Atlas Lions for becoming the fourth team from an African country to ever qualify for the World Cup quarterfinals.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the team is also the first in Africa to win a place in a semi-final at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

    According to Buhari, Morocco has made the entire continent proud with their grit and dexterity, giving hope that an African team can indeed win, and should win the ongoing global championship in Qatar.

    Buhari commended the team for their skill and teamwork, saying at the same time that this could not have been achieved without the exemplary role of the Moroccan authorities in putting together a formidable team.

    TNG reports the Atlas Lions of Morocco qualified for the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after a 1-0 defeat of Portugal.

    Youssef En-Nesyri headed the historic goal in the 42nd minute when he beat Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa to a cross from Yahya Attiat-Allah.

    Ronaldo was again not in the starting line-up but came on in the 51st minute for his 196th cap which equalled the world record from Saudi Arabia’s Badr al-Mutawa.

    However, he was unable to force a turnaround for Portugal and left the pitch in tears.

    Morocco will now continue on Wednesday when they face title-holders, France for a spot in the 2022 World Cup final.
