Constitution review: Position of Urhobo nation in process, says UPU P-G

The Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) has said it was in the process of submitting to the National Assembly (NASS) a paper on the position of the Urhobo nation on the Constitution review before the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) struck.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Olorogun Moses Taiga, President-General of the umbrella body of the Urhobo nation made this known during a press briefing at the weekend.

He stated that the UPU would continue to work with the federal and the Delta State Governments to ensure that Urhobos receive the Economic Impact of Government policies.

“Whilst, we as a socio-cultural Institution will remain non-partisan, we will seek to cooperate and work with each government and the institutions of state and federal governments of the day, to ensure that the Urhobo Nation gets its fair share of the resources and opportunities.

We were in the process of submitting the paper on Urhobo position to Senator-Omo-Agege-led Constitution Review Committee before COVID-19. We shall do so subsequently.

“The Federal and the Delta State Governments should provide adequate infrastructure to the Urhobo Nation. We need Federal Roads, particularly the East West Road, which has remained uncompleted for over 20 years.

“The Ughelli/Asaba Road, Benin-Sapele-Warri Road, among others, need completion. The road is in a terrible state of disrepair, which has led to needless loss of lives, properties and productive man-hours. A one-hour journey now takes between three to six hours. For the Urhobo people, and other Nigerians, plying the road, especially from the Ugbenu, Oghara, Adeje, Elume to PTI Junction on Effrun axis of the Benin-Ughelli Expressway, it has been a harrowing experience,” he said.

He further stated that the UPU requires an urgent attention for the legalization of community policing and solution to the herdsmen menace in Urhobo communities.

“We seek the return of Uvwie and Okpe lands, acquired for military purposes, in the past, but not so utilised, and are being sold subsequently being sold by the military to private individuals.

“We, as a Nation, had presented this matter to the President – HE Muhammadu Buhari, in June 2018, and he made a commitment to return these lands. But nothing has been done till now.

“Our Sapele Port that was given to the Navy, which is currently underutilized, should be restored back as a full operating Port. We also want full business activities at the Warri Port. Government should also develop the Okwagbe/Ganagana Port in Ughelli South Local Government. We generate Gas from Utorogu Plant – Perhaps, the largest Gas Plant in Nigeria – yet electricity in Urhobo land is comatose! This needs to be redressed.

“Government should bring in Investments to our area, together with provision of adequate SECURITY. Without security, there will be no investment or investors, with consequential zero job opportunities for our teaming youths. Our concern for the security situation for the state and country cannot therefore be over emphasised,” he said.

He also stated the resolve of the Urhobo nation to continue to cooperate with neighbouring ethnic groups.

“It is a sine qua non: It is our cardinal policy to co-exist peacefully with our neighbours in: The South, the Ijaw, Itsekiri and Isoko. The North – the Ukwani, Oshimili and Anioma. And further – The Bini, the Igbo, the Igala, the Yoruba and other ethnicities. We will continue to cultivate their friendship and good neighbourliness,” he stated.

Speaking on the Urhobo Language Education, Olorogun Taiga thanked the Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for the approval of the Urhobo Language Curriculum for Primary and Junior Secondary Schools.

“We, however, need this to be extended to include areas of Patani and Warri South LGAs, which have sizeable population of Urhobos,” adding that for primary health care, these are new times.

“With the COVID-19 Pandemic, our lives have changed. UPU therefore has added Responsibilities to our people. We intend to play a bigger role in community sensitization, ensuring that we prevent rather than treat Corona Virus. We need to care more for the elderly, poor and infirmed persons,” he said.

The UPU P-G used the opportunity to thank President Muhammadu Buhari for naming some Railway Stations along the Itakpe/Ajaokuta/Aladja/Warri Corridor after worthy Urhobo Sons.

“We thank him for naming the Abraka Station after Major-General David Ejoor (Rtd.), and the Okpara Station after Olorogun Michael Ibru. The Urhobo Nation is immensely grateful for this honour done to our departed heroes,” he said.

  • INTERVIEW: NDDC probe just a token of Nigeria’s problems, says UPU P-G

INTERVIEW: NDDC probe just a token of Nigeria’s problems, says UPU P-G

President General of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), Olorogun Moses Taiga has said the probe of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is just a token of the problems in the country.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Olorogun Taiga, who stated this in an interview with newsmen recently, said it is a shame to that the wealth of the nation is being abused.

He attributed the rot in the NDDC to the problem of leadership, stressing that if the leadership is firm and proper and contracts are given out properly, things would be different.

    On NNDC Probe

Every problem must have a cause and effect. I think the NDDC probe is not the beginning, but just a token of the problems in the country. It is a shame that what we all fought for to improve the well-being of the people who produce the wealth of this nation is being abused. I don’t expect to see anything good from the issue of this probe as it is just a drama. We have seen this type of thing before. For us in the UPU, we are not just interested in the NDDC probe only, we are calling on the President to swear in our son, Olorogun Bernard Okumagba, as the Managing Director of the NDDC, as earlier approved.

On Niger Deltans being their biggest enemies

I don’t think that criticism is fair. What is the level of the contracts of NDDC that the indigenes of Niger Delta have taken? We don’t know, but we are waiting for the result of the forensic audit which I don’t believe anything good will come out from. But let us say we have a list of all the people that started taking contracts since the NDDC was formed. How many of those are from the Niger Delta and what is the level of the activities of all these people? What about the problems that happened at Ogoni with Shell? There are problems that you don’t accuse the people that produce the wealth of this country by saying they caused those problems for themselves.

The issue is that NDDC had always lacked good leadership. If the leadership is firm and proper and contracts are given out properly and educated people, who know how to run institutions take charge, things will be different. I am talking from experience because I started my career working for the Nigerian Industrial Development Bank, NIDB. Development institutions need to be run and organized by people who are trained in that direction. It is not so much about the beneficiaries who are Niger Deltans but leadership in the running of these institutions.

On Niger Delta being over pampered (13% derivation et all)

Well, I think 13% derivation became a reality as a result of the governors from that area that were very strong on resource control. If the Niger Delta got a share of that which they produce, why will it be over pampering? I think it was done at that time by President Yar A’dua to calm the area which had become restive. It is not an issue of pampering, but an issue of giving to them that which they are entitled to. The way I see it that the governors are supposed to be distributing it, they are distributing that wealth in proportion to the production derived from each area. So, I don’t see it as pampering.

On Infrastructure and Performances of governors

I am looking at what is happening with the Urhobo nation. I am calling on the federal government to provide infrastructure which is our fair share. I am not looking beyond the nation of Urhobo, the fourth largest tribe in this country…We are not being fairly treated. I am demanding infrastructural development for the Urhobo area. I am demanding adequate utilization of our resources – gas, to give us electricity, etc. All the oil companies operating in our area should come back. FG is even insisting that oil companies should go back to their areas of production. We are calling on Shell to come back to Urhobo land. We are calling on Chevron to expand its activities to include Urhobo land. We are calling on Seplat to continue production activities in Urhobo land and we are calling on Heritage to come to do same. Urhobo land had one time the largest facilities in the whole country. We want development from them.

On the (Niger Delta) governors, some of my colleagues and equivalent of UPU in other ethnic groups have cried out loud that the governors are not doing enough for our development. They need to do a lot more than what they are doing for us.

Reviving the Ports in Urhobo land

This issue was cardinal when we met the President in June, 2018. He said he was going to look at it. In the case of Uvwie and Ukpe land, he said if it is indeed true, he is going to reverse them back to us. But like most things in Nigeria, you have to keep knocking and knocking on the door until you get your answer. Same thing with the port. That Sapele port has nine bases, and the navy is only using one. They are under utilizing the ports. So, we said they can keep using their own but that they should restore the rest back to us so that we can get shipping companies to bring their products direct, to Sapele, instead of the congestion problem in Apapa.

    Security

On May 19, 2020, the Delta state Governor, His Excellency, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, made a pronouncement and decided to set up a state community police committee and state community advisory committee. The Co-Chairman of the advisory committee was the Chairman of the council of Traditional Rulers and the state community policy committee was made up of various youth bodies, NGOs, etc. That is a background of the state government saying that it will establish a security outfit to be called operation Delta Hawk. It will work with vigilante groups, security agencies and other relevant stakeholders.

I know that there is the talk of setting up an Ámotekun’ which is the South-West concept. For now, let’s concern ourselves with Operation Delta Hawk for a place like Delta which is big before we expand to include other states in the Niger Delta.

The issue is, first, can we establish the operation Delta Hawk properly? We are conscious about security because we know that without it, there is no room for investors and investments. We do need adequate security. There is the issue of the herdsmen who are creating a lot of problems in our area. Only recently, the women in Oviri Olowu, in Ughelli South LGA took it upon themselves and decided that they were going to fight the herdsmen. Security is an item we should always put on the front burner.

On 2023 Governorship Elections and zoning

The reality is, though we are the largest constituting unit in Delta, we cannot win alone. Therefore, we need to work with our neighbours. Whether with the three Is-the ijaws, Isokos or the Itsekiris or go up north to the Aniomas, Ukwanis and Osiminis. Therefore, the UPU will work hard to coordinate the Urhobo nation, such that we will work in tandem with our neighbours. We will work with our neighbours. Urhobo has only eight local governments, and a candidate needs to score at least 25 per cent of the votes in three local government areas to emerge governor we cannot do it alone. also, though we are the major ethnic group, we do not want to be seen as dominating. These are the initial stages. We will work with our neighbours to unite the state and the UPU will liaise political parties to ensure that we select the best candidates in Urhobo land. We will showcase the candidates and get our neighbours to give us support to ensure a candidate of Urhobo origin emerges the next governor of Delta State. But UPU will remain a socio-cultural body

    Youth Wing

By the nature of youths, there is always agitation for offices. We have settled the issue of the youth wing now. We have appointed Ovie Ebireri as the President of the Ukoko R’ Ighele R’Urhobo. He was the deputy president in the last regime. Once the President-General of UPU has appointed and anointed a candidate, I don’t understand any other group making noise in the newspapers. The Ovie Ebireri executive is the only group known to us and was legitimately sworn in.

    Achievements

Some of the items on our campaign promises include the renovation of Urhobo college, establishment of an Urhobo University, setting up of a microfinance bank, etc. On the microfinance, we actually appointed a consultant, a management team, a three-man interim board chaired by Mr. Albert Esiri. At that time, the CBN stopped licensing of microfinance banks because it wanted to raise their capital base. For two years, we were waiting for the revised approval of the minimum capital for the establishment of a microfinance bank. Until the central bank approved late last year, we couldn’t proceed. From what we had set up before, we approached all the 24 kingdoms to set up a microfinance that is called the Okugbe microfinance bank. We asked kingdoms to nominate individuals in their kingdom that will own at least five per cent of the bank to ensure it is not owned by one person or few persons. We were moving well except for the delay of the CBN. Our initial plan of putting our microfinance bank is on. When Corona Virus is over, we intend to finish it up.

    University

On the university, we set up a committee under Prof G.G. Darah that is doing the feasibility study and we have and we have had very good interest from Urhobo people. There are at least four communities in Urhobo land that have indicated interest in having the university sited on their land. Work is still on.

2019: Stop senseless killings, Taiga urges warring factions

The President-General of Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) Worldwide, Olorogun Moses Taiga, has called on politicians of Urhobo extraction to prevail on their supporters to stop the senseless political violence currently going on in Urhobo land.

Olorogun Taiga spoke against the background of reported political violence which led to the death of political party supporters in Uvwie and Abraka in Delta Central Senatorial District, Delta State.

“I have said before; do not shed the blood of any Urhobo son or daughter to achieve your political ambition. If you kill the people you are aspiring to serve, who will you serve when you get to power; goats and other domestic animals,” Olorogun Taiga asked rhetorically.

He advised Urhobo sons being used as thugs to be wise and tell their masters to use their own children instead.

“Do not endanger or waste your precious life for any politician,” he admonished the youths.

Olorogun Taiga reiterated his earlier call on politicians to go about their campaigns peacefully.

“Sell your programmes to the people and let them decide who they want as their representative or governor,” he stated.

He urged all contestants, especially those of the two major political parties in the state not to upset the fragile peace in Delta State, in general, and Urhoboland, in particular.

He further appealed to candidates in Delta Central to play politics as refined people and eschew any form of bitterness and rancor.

“There is always life after politics; we are all one with a common heritage. Our people in politics should not upset the table today over politics because tomorrow offers greater and bigger opportunities,” he added.

The UPU PG maintained that the UPU is the umbrella body of all Urhobos and remains neutral.

He, however, urged Urhobos to vote for only politicians who will protect and further the interest of the Urhobo Nation.

  • Urhobo Mfb begins operation in 2019

Urhobo Mfb begins operation in 2019

Mr Moses Taiga, the President-General (PG) of Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), says the proposed Urhobo Microfinance Bank (MFB) will start operation in the second quarter of 2019.

The PG of the umbrella body of the Urhobo ethnic nationality said this on Thursday at a “Meeting of PGs of the 24 Urhobo Kingdom Forum” held at Effurun, Uvwie Local Government area of Delta.

Addressing newsmen shortly after the meeting, Taiga said the union had started perfecting the necessary arrangements to secure the licence before May 2019.

He said the bank would have been functional before now and attributed the delay to the directive of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) which stopped the issuance of operational license to prospective investors in the sub-sector.

“The Urhobo MFB would have taken off before now, but CBN closed the gate of granting licenses. Now that it has given the go ahead, by May 2019, the bank will become operational,” he said.

Taiga said the objective of opening the bank was to uplift the wellbeing of the people, particularly women and youths of Urhoboland.

“The purpose of the bank is to give the women and youths access to small capital to do their businesses and by implication reduce unemployment,” he said.

The PG said that the Mfb would be in single unit category with capital base of N200 million, adding that 48 per cent of the shares would be owned by Urhobo communities to guarantee its sustainability.

He said that UPU would own a small per cent of the shares, while the remaining shares would be owned by prominent Urhobo sons and daughters.

Taiga said that the bank, targeted at meeting the financial needs of the small scale business operators, would lend at single digit interest rate.

“The aim of the Mfb is to give the people, youth, women and traders and to guarantee means of getting money to borrow and pay back later at a very low interest rate.

“We are going for the single unit category which requires N200 million capital base,” he said.

UPU accuses Soldiers of aiding killings in Delta, calls for probe

The Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) has called on the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government and security authorities to probe allegations of partisanship on the part of soldiers drafted to quell crisis between Aladja and Ogbe-Ijoh communities in Delta State.
TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports, Aladja, an Urhobo community, and Ogbe-Ijoh, an Ijaw community, both in Delta State, have locked horns in crisis, running years, leaving several persons, including children reportedly killed.
President-General of the UPU Worldwide, Olorogun Moses Taiga, who was speaking against background of renewed clashes between the two warring communities in which over eight persons were feared dead, stated that “Soldiers were grossly partisan in the recent incidence by firing shots at helpless residents of Aladja”.
“For how long are we going to allow the breach of peace of peace and the disregard for the sanctity of human lives in these two communities because of other considerations not favourable to truth, justice, equity and peaceful co-existence?.
“I call on the federal government to investigate allegations that Soldiers were grossly partisan in this recent incidence by firing shots at helpless residents of Aladja, killing many,” Taiga stated.
He also called on Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to show political will and summon moral to, as a matter of urgency, resolve the lingering dispute between Aladja and Ogbe-Ijoh communities in Delta State.
The Leader of the Urhobo ethnic nationality frowned at allegations that certain individuals in high places are exacerbating the crisis, submitting that “such persons, if it is true, should search their consciences and be warned that history and the Creator will be unkind to them for any role they play in the wanton killings and destruction.
“This dispute has lingered for too long and has taken much blood, lives and property. I call on the State Government led by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to show political will by looking at the reports of the various committees set up to look into the dispute and carry out their recommendations fearlessly.
“Governor Ifeanyi Okowa should etch his name into the golden books of history by resolving this crisis permanently by upholding the tenets of truth and justice, no matter whose ox is gored,” he said.

No blood is worth any politician’s ambition – UPU

As the 2019 general election is fast approaching, the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) has warned no blood of any Urhobo sons and daughters is worth the ambition of any politician.
TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports President General of the Union, Olorogun Moses Taiga, gave the warning on Sunday while congratulating candidates who have conclusively secured their parties’ nomination to contest in the general elections.
While maintaining that the UPU is the sociocultural umbrella body of all Urhobos worldwide, he reiterated commitment that the UPU will work with the political class, irrespective of party leanings, to move the Urhobo Nation forward.
Olorogun Taiga also advised Urhobo sons and daughters vying for various political offices to put the interest of the Urhobo Nation first, and above personal interest.
“I recognize the passion and the competitive nature associated with the nomination process, but I advise all the contestants across political parties to follow due process, avoid rancour and any act capable of dividing or weakening the position of the Urhobo Nation.
“The precious blood of Urhobo sons and daughters should also not be shed to actualize any political ambition,” he stated.
He further urged all contestants to go and sell their programmes to the people in other to get their support.
However, he advised that such programmes should lead to the enhancement of the wellbeing of the people and improvement in the socioeconomic environment of the Urhobo Nation.

  • Omo-Agege: Taiga congratulates Urhobo nation

The President General of Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), Olorogun Moses Taiga, has rejoiced with the Urhobo nation over resumption of duties of the Senator representing the Urhobo nation in the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.

In a press release, Olorogun Taiga said while the suspension of Omo-Agege lasted, it was the Urhobo nation that suffered because it was robbed of his voice in the Senate.

He reiterated his call on the Senate leadership to stop further appeal on the matter and face more urgent matters of national importance.

“We have many problems in Nigeria to keep the Senate busy and it should refrain from chasing shadows.

“The rejection by the court of the Senate’s plea of stay-of-execution of the earlier judgment declaring Senator Omo-Agege’s suspension illegal further attests to the futility of the Senate’s continuous pursuit of the case,” Olorogun Taiga asserted.

Olorogun Taiga used the opportunity to urge Senator Omo-Agege to redouble his efforts in his service to his fatherland, especially the Urhobo nation that sent him to the senate.

  • Omo-Agege: Taiga urges Senate to discontinue appeal

Omo-Agege: Taiga urges Senate to discontinue appeal

The President General of Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), Olorogun Moses Taiga, has urged the Nigerian Senate to discontinue its appeal against the victory of the Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Obarisi Ovie Omo-Agege.

This is coming even as Olorogun Taiga congratulated Senator Omo-Agege on his victory, saying it was not only a victory for the Senator alone, but the entire Urhobo nation.

TheNewsGuru reports the Senate filed a notice of appeal and a stay of execution on a High Court judgement nullifying the suspension of Senator Omo-Agege at the Abuja division of the Federal High Court.

The Federal High Court in Abuja had nullified the suspension of the Delta Central Senator by the Senate describing the action as unconstitutional, after the Senator instituted a suit challenging his suspension.

Taiga, while speaking with newsmen at the weekend, said the Urhobo nation was being denied representation at the red chambers and that there is an urgent need for the leadership of the Senate, especially Senate President Bukola Saraki to see to it that Senator Omo-Agege is immediately recalled to take his rightful place in the upper chambers.

Omo-Agege was suspended for 90 days by the Senate after he accused his colleagues of working against President Muhammadu Buhari by amending the electoral act.

The Senate said the suspension was not because of Omo-Agege’s comments on the election re-oreder but for his move of approaching the court over the matter.

Nullifying the suspension of the Delta Central Senator, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba held that while the National Assembly had the power to discipline its erring members, the premise on which Omo-Agege’s suspension was anchored was illegal.

  • Omo-Agege’s suspension unacceptable to Urhobo – Taiga

The President General of the Urhobo Progress Union Worldwide, Olorogun Moses Taiga, has urged the Nigerian Senate to immediately lift the suspension placed on the senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Ovie Omo-Agege.

Olorogun Taiga, who made this plea in a press statement, said the Urhobo Nation, the fourth largest ethnic group in Nigeria, could not be without representation in the senate for such a long and critical time.

“Senator Ovie Omo-Agege is the only senator representing the entire Urhobo Nation. For him to be absent at this critical time is unacceptable to the Urhobos.

“Elections are almost here, we are discussing the way forward for Nigeria and there are many other critical issues, including the invasion of Urhoboland by Fulani herdsmen.

“We need Senator Omo-Agege in the senate to protect and defend the Urhobo interest we sent him there to do.

“All the UPU is asking for is the reinstatement of Ovie Omo-Agege and the UPU is ready to work with the senate to ensure his prompt recall,” Olorogun Taiga added.

Olorogun Taiga said the Urhobo Nation was the greatest loser in the suspension of Senator Omo-Agege and urged all Urhobos, irrespective of political affiliations and whatever would have happened before, to work towards the lifting of the suspension.

It would be recalled that the senate suspended Senator Omo-Agege for 90 legislative days last week.
