Why Deschamps wrong for taking off Griezmann – Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has criticised Didier Deschamps for his substitutions in the loss to Switzerland on Tuesday.

The reigning World Cup winners were knocked out at the round of 16 stage after blowing a 3-1 lead against the Swiss.

Deschamps brought off Antoine Griezmann in normal time before France failed to see out the game.

‘I believe France had a little bit of fun, which in football I think you must have football after the game, not during the game. They had fun too early,’ Mourinho told talkSPORT.

‘They were playing fantastic, the way they changed the result, amazing, Benzema’s first goal was incredible, Pogba’s third goal was top. But then I think they had a little bit of fun.

‘I also believe Deschamps made one mistake that I think about many, many times.

‘When you’re in a game where there’s a possibility of extra time you have to be very careful with the changes you make.

‘When you make a change on minute 89 and you take off one of your best players, Griezmann, who was playing amazingly well and you change Griezmann for Sissoko.

‘If this is a points game without extra time that’s okay. But when there’s the possibility of extra time that’s a big game because then you make that change, they equalise in minute 91 or 92, you go to extra time and then you want to shoot yourself because you left Griezmann out of extra time.

‘Then in extra time you have the unlucky situation you cannot control of Benzema getting injured or feeling something and you lose your two top attacking players.

‘And then during extra time you never felt France could win it because they didn’t have the power to do it.

‘I think in this moment that Deschamps knows he made that mistake, which is something that can happen to every one of us, but experience helps us.

‘When you have extra time as a possibility still open you don’t take off one of your best players.’

  • What I really think of Memphis Depay – Mourinho

What I really think of Memphis Depay – Mourinho

Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says he’s a fan of Barcelona signing Memphis Depay.

Mourinho feels Depay joined United too early in his career.

“He is a really good professional. People can look at him and probably think he’s a party boy,” new Roma coach Mourinho told talkSPORT. “I think he got this maturity in Lyon which is sometimes what players need.

“Sometimes they can go too early to the biggest clubs where they are not ready to cope with it. Where they are not ready to understand that in the biggest clubs there are internal competition, that you can not play all the time. That there are fantastic players to fight with you for a position. They can lose a little sense of reality and become a bit childish. Which is what happened.

“So when he decided to go to Lyon it was a great move for him and now he goes to Barcelona with maturity, with a good football age and I believe the Barcelona culture of football will help him also to level up in this important part of his career. But good memories of him and I repeat – he was a good professional.”

Roma manager, Jose Mourinho, has claimed Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has ghosted at Euro 2020.

According to him, Fernandes has taken up space on the pitch but “not playing”.

Mourinho admits the Manchester United man has “incredible potential”, but isn’t showing the same abilities he usually offers at club level.

“Portugal at its highest level can beat anyone,” Mourinho said on talkSPORT.

“But we need to play with 11 players, in these two matches, Bruno Fernandes was on the pitch but not playing.

“I hope he turns up against France because he’s a player with incredible potential.”

He added: “Portugal has three fantastic attacking players, Bernardo Silva, Cristiano [Ronaldo] and [Diogo] Jota.

“We need that connection, but until now Bruno is not playing.”

Eto’o hoping Ramos joins PSG, unhappy with Mourinho

Former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o is backing Sergio Ramos for a move to PSG.

Ramos will leave Real Madrid when his contract expires at the end of the month, with PSG in contact about bringing him to France.

Eto’o, who admits he’s a big PSG fan, told AS: “If I could bring him to Barcelona, I would, but if he went I would be happy to see him at PSG.

“I know he would help us win this Champions League which is so difficult to win.”

On his former Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho taking the Roma job, Eto’o admitted a little disappointment.

He continued: “It hurt me, I won’t hide it, to see the one who gave me the opportunity to win in Italy go to another team. But I know he is happy and friendship is above all else.

“I would have liked to see him again at Inter, but I wish him good luck at Roma all the same but know that Inter always comes first for me.”

I’d like to sign Aston Villa captain – Mourinho

Roma coach Jose Mourinho admits he’s a fan of Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish.

However, he says the England ace will be out of range of Roma’s transfer budget this summer.

Mourinho admits Villa chief executive Christian Purslow, who worked with Mourinho at Chelsea, knows that too.

Mourinho said: “Look, I think he knows where he wants to go, I think he knows the type of club to be able to buy him.

“My friend Christian Purslow also knows the value of the player, and of course that is not for Roma. If it is for Italian football, it would be a different club, not for us.”

Serie A: Why I agreed Roma move – Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has explained taking the job with AS Roma.

Mourinho was named new Roma coach barely days after being sacked by Tottenham.

“They really wanted me,” he told GQ Portugal.

“It was almost instantly, me leaving Tottenham in the morning and Roma calling me in the afternoon. They wanted me a lot and were objective.

“Something I had already felt throughout my years in Italy was the Italian passion when it comes to football, specifically around Roma, a club that has won no trophies in 20 years.

“These are new owners, who have a very humble approach in a way that they recognised this was a new chapter in their amazing professional lives, a chapter in which they needed help from someone with a broad experience.

“They were very honest and straightforward, and I immediately felt this passion I have for my work. So I didn’t have to think too much about it, because they really touched me with their approach. I really liked it.”

  • Mourinho on Hazard: Amazing player with awful training

Mourinho on Hazard: Amazing player with awful training

New Roma coach Jose Mourinho has taken aim at Real Madrid’s Belgium star Eden Hazard.

Hazard played under Mourinho during the Portuguese’s second spell at Chelsea, winning a Premier League title in 2013/14.

But the pair enjoyed a famously combustible relationship during their time together, with Mourinho once telling a dressing room they were “playing with 10 men” thanks to Hazard’s lack of defensive work.

Coming off the back of his worst season as a professional, Mourinho has rekindled the rivalry, claiming his poor attitude on the training pitch stops him from reaching the game’s pinnacle.

Asked about his former charge, Mourinho told talkSPORT: “An amazing player with awful training.

“He gets on the pitch every morning and he doesn’t work much. You can imagine what he could be if he was a top professional.”

  • Euro 2020: Mourinho names two Scotland players to upset England

Euro 2020: Mourinho names two Scotland players to upset England

Jose Mourinho says Scotland need their players to produce a five-star performance for a chance to upset England today.

Writing for The Sun, Mourinho said: “You must believe Scotland’s mentality can make their team much better than the sum of its parts — but England are much, much better.

“Scotland are based on their three best players — Kieran Tierney, Andy Robertson and Scott McTominay.

“And without Tierney against the Czech Republic, they were reduced to two top-quality players.

“I would expect more from John McGinn and Stuart Armstrong, they are good Premier League players.

“Scotland, though, are a team with a good mentality but without real talent, especially in attack.

“I was surprised with Scotland against the Czechs in the way they really struggled to build their game. The quality wasn’t high.

“Their spirit will be doubled at Wembley but England just have to approach the game in a serious way and win.”

Mourinho told TalkSPORT: “I think Ruben Dias is the best centre-back in the world now, maybe.

“I would say that Ruben with this step to the Premier League is getting a different knowledge and experience of competitiveness.

    “I think he’s a fantastic centre-back.”

Why I’m upset with Chelsea midfielder – Mourinho

Roma manager, Jose Mourinho, has said he was very upset with Chelsea midfielder, Mateo Kovacic because he never managed the Croatia international despite their similar career paths.

Mourinho said this ahead of Croatia’s Euro 2020 opener against England on Sunday.

Since leaving Dinamo Zagreb in 2013, Kovacic has played for three clubs, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea, all previously managed by Mourinho.

But the 27-year-old has never worked with the Portuguese gaffer.

“Kovacic, I always feel he’s much better than what people think,” said Mourinho on talkSPORT.

“And I am very upset with him because he played in every club I have been to, but never with me!

“He played for Real Madrid, but not with me. He played for Chelsea, but not with me. He played for Inter, but not with me.

“So I love the guy and the guy who followed my clubs… maybe he goes to Tottenham! Maybe he will go to Tottenham next season! But he never played for me.”
