Mourinho spoke to Tottenham players for four hours after sack

Former Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho met with his players for four hours after his dismissal on Monday.

The Telegraph says Mourinho’s relationship with some members of the squad hit an all-time low following Spurs’ Europa League exit.

Chairman Daniel Levy relieved Mourinho of his duties on Monday, just six days before the Carabao Cup final, with Ryan Mason being appointed interim head coach.

Spurs were sat seventh in the Premier League when Mourinho was dismissed and crashed out of the Europa League last month, with Dinamo Zagreb overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit to win the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

Following a two-hour meeting with club chiefs on Monday where he was informed that he would be dismissed, Mourinho is said to have held a series of discussions with the players where he told them ‘home truths’ about their recent performances.

Key reason to Mourinho’s sack by Tottenham

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy sacked Jose Mourinho over concerns of missing out on RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann, it has been claimed.

The Telegraph says Mourinho was sacked by Tottenham following Levy’s decision to accelerate the appointment of a new manager – prompted by the interest in young German coach Julian Nagelsmann from perennial Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Levy had made the decision over the weekend following the 2-2 draw with Everton on Friday night that left Spurs with one win in their last five league games and in reaction to the news that Bayern head coach Hansi Flick will not lead the club next season.

Nagelsmann is favourite to succeed Flick at the end of this campaign.

Harry Kane has thanked Jose Mourinho after he was sacked as manager of Tottenham on Monday.

The Portuguese was shown the door after 17 months at the club, just days from the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City.

Kane was the first Spurs player to release a statement following the news.

He wrote on his Twitter account, accompanied by a photo of the pair: “Thank you for everything, Boss. A pleasure to have worked together.

“I wish you all the best for your next chapter.”

Mourinho reveals next action after Tottenham sack

Axed Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has spoken on his future few hours after he was dismissed.

Mourinho, however, refused to to comment on the shock sacking, “No, no. Thanks so much. I’m not going to speak. ‘You know me, you know that I’m not going to say anything,” when asked by Sky Sports if he has something to say about it.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss was sacked by Spurs after a disappointing season.

After the sack, the former Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss was seen returning to his west London home to unpack all the belongings from his office, including a number of photos.

There, he met reporters looking to get his first interview on his sacking,

Asked by Sky Sports if he had anything to say, Mourinho replied, “Nice picture’ as he lifted aloft one of his framed photos, before adding: ‘No, no. Thanks so much. I’m not going to speak.

“You know me, you know that I’m not going to say anything.”

Asked if he would take a break, Mourinho shook his head and replied:

“No. No need. No need [for] breaks and no need for [recharging] batteries.”

Probed on whether he wants to be back in football as soon as possible, Mourinho smiled and said: “I’m always in football.”

Wayne Rooney slams Tottenham for sacking Mourinho

Derby manager Wayne Rooney has slammed Tottenham over the sacking of Jose Mourinho today.

Spurs have fired their Portuguese coach just six days before they meet Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, and Rooney believes there is no-one better to outwit Pep Guardiola than Mourinho.

“I think it’s crazy doing it before a cup final,” said Rooney, who worked with Mourinho at Manchester United. “It’s strange timing anyway. Surely they could have waited until after the cup final if that’s the direction they wanted to go in.

“Mourinho is a manager who loves winning trophies, that’s quite clear to see. He’s won a lot of trophies throughout his career.

“If there was one manager to set up a team to play against Man City in a cup final it’s Jose Mourinho. Tottenham haven’t had the best of seasons so from that point of view so it’s crazy and a massive risk.

“I’m sure Daniel Levy could have waited until the day after the game, that would have made more sense if they wanted to get rid of Mourinho.”

  • Mourinho set to miss out on full £30m payout after sack

Mourinho set to miss out on full £30m payout after sack

Premier League club Tottenham will avoid a full pay-out to sacked manager Jose Mourinho.

The Daily Mail says Mourinho leaves with significantly less than the widely purported £30m compensation package he was said to be due.

Sources have claimed that his package will not go over £20m due to performance-related clauses in his contract linked to European qualification and his £10m-per-season salary.

Mourinho will be placed on gardening leave by Tottenham despite his dismissal, meaning Spurs will continue to pay him as normal until he finds new employment.

As a result of Spurs’ poor league position, Mourinho is effectively not entitled to his full compensation. Spurs are seventh in the Premier League, five points off the final Champions League place, currently occupied by West Ham.

Initial indications that Mourinho was earning £15m per season are said to be exaggerated.

His basic wage is closer to £10m, which significantly decreases his severance deal.

It has been claimed that coaches Ryan Mason and Chris Powell are set to take the reins for the rest of the season.

Paul Pogba launches attack on Jose Mourinho

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has launched a furious attack on Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho.

The midfielder has opened up on the turbulent spell under Mourinho at Old Trafford and pointed out what has changed under new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“What I have now with Ole is different, he wouldn’t go against the players,” Pogba told Sky Sports. “He wouldn’t go against the players.

“Maybe Ole wouldn’t pick them, but it’s not like he puts them on the side like they don’t exist anymore. That’s the difference between Mourinho and Ole.

“Once I had a great relationship with Mourinho, everybody saw that, and the next day you don’t know what happened. That’s the strange thing I had with Mourinho and I cannot explain to you because even I don’t know. So, yeah.”

He had the last laugh when they met Mourinho’s Tottenham at the weekend, with Pogba taking the opportunity to have another swipe.

“We won the game, he lost the game and he doesn’t want to speak about the game, he wants to speak about the dad of someone, that’s what he does,” Pogba added. “Everybody knows him, it’s very Mourinho.”

Tottenham players believe in Mourinho – Moura

Lucas Moura has insisted that the whole Tottenham squad are united behind under-fire boss Jose Mourinho amid the club’s turbulent 2020-21 campaign.

Mourinho’s position in the Spurs dugout has been called into question in the wake of a nightmare week which saw the team follow up a north London derby defeat to Arsenal by exiting the Europa League in shocking fashion at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb.

“It’s been a very bad week for us, the feeling was very bad,” the Spurs winger told the Evening Standard : “Last night, we showed our nature, we showed attitude.

“The good thing about football is you don’t have time to cry. We talked about [the Dinamo] game. The manager told us a lot of things, but the kind of things we need to keep between us.

“He has a lot of experience and he tried to motivate us, and it was very good for last night’s game. Let’s go. We have nine games to play, we have a final (the Carabao Cup), let’s finish the season well.

“We are all together. We’re in the same boat. We lose together, we win together. What happened in Croatia was our fault. Everyone included. When we’re on the pitch, we just want to win.

“We know there are a lot of fans behind the TV supporting us. We play for our family, we play for pride and we’re all together. We believe in the coach. We believe in the coach because we know his history. We just want to be successful here.”

Why Mourinho superior to Guardiola – Ferreira

Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira says Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola should move to Porto.

Ferreira insists Guardiola needs to prove himself at a lower ranked team.

“I would like Guardiola to say ‘no, now I’m going to coach Porto, I’m going to Portugal to be European champion’,” Ferreira told ESPN Brasil.

Despite these statements, the Palmeiras coach acknowledges that Guardiola is one of his references.

“I admire him deeply,” he said.

But Ferreira stays with Jose Mourinho ahead Guardiola: “It is one thing to reach clubs that spend a fortune to build final squads, and quite another is not to have that opportunity. In that sense, Mourinho won at Porto, at Inter fifty years after the last Champions League. For me he is a reference, if I see him, I bow to him.

“I never spoke personally with Mourinho, we only exchanged a message. For me, he is a great reference in Portuguese football, it was he who opened the door to everyone. For my part, there will always be great admiration.”

I spoke with Jose Mourinho, PSG – Rudiger

Antonio Rudiger has revealed he held talks with PSG and Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho last summer.

The German defender decided to stay at Chelsea and has since become a regular under Thomas Tuchel.

Speaking before Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 clash with Atletico Madrid, Rudiger said: “Some things I saw coming, but I didn’t see that I wouldn’t be in the squad [under Lampard].

“This I didn’t see coming. But in the end, I took it on the chin. Yes, I had really two main teams that maybe wanted me and that I was considering.

“It was PSG, to be honest, and with Mourinho [at Tottenham]. But this is something that didn’t happen. With Tuchel, it didn’t happen. I was a bit upset because I knew that I wouldn’t often play in my situation.

“Then I had a talk with the ex-coach of Lampard and I was suddenly back in the team but on the bench. I had a couple of games and I worked my way back. In the last games of his reign, I was on the pitch. Now, things are going well for me and I am very happy about it.

“To be honest, though, I always felt good in the club. They treated me nicely, especially upstairs from the board. No one told me I should leave. Neither did Frank Lampard, the transfers I had didn’t happen. The loans didn’t happen, but no one told me at the club that I should leave either.”
