Chelsea boss Lampard condemns Mourinho’s advice

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, has taken a fresh swipe at Jose Mourinho, after their angry touchline row this week.

Mourinho took aim at Lampard during their Carabao Cup clash on Thursday.

The Tottenham Hotspur boss shouted “f****** hell Frank, when you’re losing 3-0 you’re not standing up here,” as the pair exchanged words.

Both managers played down the incident after the match and insisted their mutual respect remains intact, with Mourinho claiming he was giving his former midfielder advice.

But, asked if he could take the advice offered by Mourinho, Lampard said: “I don’t think any remarks made on the touchline during the game can be called advice.

“They can probably be wrapped up as advice after a game when you manage to get back in the game and win on penalties, so I don’t think that is the case.

“I would always be happy to not just take advice from fellow managers, but everything around me whether it be my players, staff, people I respect, listen to in football outside football, in life.

“I think that’s what moulds you as a manager so I don’t think the Jose incident was ever advice. It wasn’t that.”

Maniche shares memories with Jose Mourinho

Former Chelsea and Porto midfielder Maniche has recalled working with Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho.

It’s 20 years since Maniche first played for Mourinho at Benfica and he admits the players had never before experienced the man-management employed by the Special One.

He told O Jogo: “The way of working and communicating was a tremendous novelty.

“The confidence transmitted was so strong that we thought we were excellent players.

“On the eve of the game with Boavista, Karel Poborsky said he wanted to play at number 10. Mourinho called him to the dressing room, told him to sit in his chair and asked to explain it to him…”

Maniche added: “It was not by chance that he wrote the preface to my book. The text is powerful and reflects what I am. He is a coach who takes players to the clubs he knows and gives guarantees. He won very important titles, broke records after records and likes to be on the front line. That’s why he is one of the best.”

Maniche played for Mourinho at Benfica, Porto and Chelsea.

Why Mourinho will not play Bale until October

Tottenham Hotspur’s medical team has confirmed Gareth Bale will be unavailable for selection for at least one month with an injury, Marca reports.

Bale arrived in London on Friday alongside Real Madrid team-mate Sergio Reguilon, who joins on a permanent deal, to finalise the deal.

The 31-year-old has been carrying an injury, but has been working in a gym at Valdebebas.

However, the Spurs medical team took a look at Bale’s injury and determined he will be out for as many as four weeks.

It appears that Tottenham knew this may be the case in advance, meaning the £20million loan transfer will still go through.

EPL: Mourinho reveals Alli’s reaction to being substituted

Jose Mourinho has revealed Dele Alli was ‘quiet and sad’ after being substituted at half-time in Tottenham’s opening Premier League game of the season against Everton amid reports of a bust-up with the midfielder.

Spurs started the new campaign on a sour note, losing 1-0 at home to Carlo Ancelotti’s side on Sunday in a disappointing performance.

England international Alli was hooked by Mourinho at the interval, with midfielder Moussa Sissoko brought on in his place.

“Dele was quiet, he was sad,” said Mourinho, regarding Alli’s reaction to being substituted against Everton amid reports he could head to Real Madrid as part of any agreement which would see Gareth Bale return to Spurs. “After the game, he was just one of many.

“He’s a good boy, very, very polite and I never saw from him a strong reaction. A good boy, a really good boy.”

EPL: Mourinho slams ‘lazy’ Tottenham after slim defeat

Jose Mourinho suffered his first ever defeat on Premier League opening weekend as Tottenham fell 1-0 to Everton in north London.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored with a fine second-half header from Lucas Digne’s free-kick to give Carlo Ancelotti’s side all three points.

James Rodriguez was impressive on debut for the Toffees, while fellow new signings Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure also started the match.

Spurs were unable to breach Jordan Pickford’s goal despite managing five shots on target, and Mourinho was quick to criticise his players for being ‘lazy’ when speaking after the game.

“What happened after the goal with them having more chances is a consequence of conceding the goal and not such good fitness condition from some players,” Mourinho told BBC Sport.

“What happened before the goal was a good game. We had two incredible situations and two good saves from Jordan Pickford. We didn’t score. The game was open.

“In the second half one goal made a difference in the result and what happened after the goal.

“Against good teams like Everton if you let them play from the back they are comfortable with very good technical players. If you don’t press them you give them ammunition.

“We were lazy in our pressing. That is a consequence of bad fitness, bad pre-season. Some players didn’t even have a pre-season. Some players had a wrong state of mind. I don’t want to speak about it — I’m not sure about it.

“It was too easy for them to play from back to front.

“Technically it was not so easy because some players didn’t have a pre-season for different reasons. We had two days with everybody. Two days before the game is not where you can work too much.

“The goal shouldn’t be possible when you have six referees and VAR – to let a free-kick be taken five or six metres in front because it’s a huge difference.”

  • Mourinho fears Coutinho may upset locker room at Tottenham

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has been forced to rethink their push for Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho.

Coutinho is available for around £80million or a £9m season-long loan but he would want more than the £200,000-a-week Spurs pay their top-bracket stars including Harry Kane.

That would break Tottenham’s wage ceiling.

Mundo Deportivo says Mourinho is not prepared to do that and upset the rest of his stars, who would demand pay hikes.

Spurs might have to fork out around £9m for next season to take the 27-year-old Brazilian.

Although that would be a figure Spurs bean counters would be agreeable with, Mourinho feels the talisman’s wages would be a huge stumbling block.

Mourinho accepts he broke social-distancing rules

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho says he “accepts my actions were not in line with government protocol” after being pictured flouting coronavirus social-distancing guidelines.

Mourinho was pictured leading a training session with record signing Tanguy Ndombele on Hadley Common.

Davinson Sanchez and Ryan Sessegnon were filmed running together through the same London park.

Serge Aurier posted a video of himself on Instagram jogging alongside another.

Spurs said they have spoken to the players to “remind them to respect” the government’s coronavirus guidelines, while the Metropolitan Police said it was “aware” of the social media footage but “no complaints had been received in relation to this incident”.

Mourinho said: “I accept that my actions were not in line with government protocol and we must only have contact with members of our own household.”

“It is vital we all play our part and follow government advice in order to support our heroes in the NHS and save lives.”

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said the players and Mourinho should be leading by example.

  • Mourinho on longest winless run of his career

Mourinho on longest winless run of his career

Jose Mourinho is struggling to get results with a squad currently ravaged by injuries and low on confidence

Tottenham’s 3-0 defeat to RB Leipzig in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday night has seen Jose Mourinho fail to win his past six matches in all competitions – his longest ever run without victory.

Across Spurs’ last six games, Mourinho has seen his side beaten four times and held to two draws as they struggle in the wake of injuries to key attackers Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

That poor form has ended the club’s hopes of any silverware this seaso, with Tottenham knocked out of the FA Cup and Champions League in the space of a week.

Spurs also now face a real fight to qualify for the Champions League next season with the club currently eighth in the Premier League – seven points shy of fourth-place Chelsea.

The Portuguese tactician has struggled since he replaced Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham, with the club’s 3-0 loss on Tuesday condemning him to his joint-heaviest Champions League defeat and three consecutive losses in the competition for the first time in his career.

Mourinho must now try to end his longest winless run on Sunday when Spurs host Manchester United in the Premier League.

While Tottenham have hit a rough patch over the past few months, the Red Devils have started to hit their stride and have avoided defeat in their last 10 matches.

Mourinho’s Tottenham knocked out of Champions League

Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League campaign came to an end as they were well beaten by RB Leipzig in the last 16.

The German club – who were only formed 10 years ago – led 1-0 from the first leg in London and Marcel Sabitzer’s double at the Red Bull Arena put Leipzig in control.

Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris should have done better for both goals – getting a hand to both the Leipzig captain’s 20-yard shot and near-post header.

Emil Forsberg scored with his first touch after coming off the bench to give Leipzig a 4-0 aggregate win.

Injury-hit Spurs never looked capable of mounting a comeback like the one against Ajax last season which took them to the final and will now finish the season without a trophy again.

Jose Mourinho’s side – who have not won in six games in all competitions – will need to find some form if they are to be back in this tournament at all next season. They are seven points behind the top four in the Premier League.

EPL: Son seals late victory for Mourinho

Son Heung-min’s stoppage time goal gave Tottenham a last-gasp victory in an entertaining game at Aston Villa as the visitors moved up to fifth in the Premier League table.

The result means Jose Mourinho’s side have leapfrogged Sheffield United and are now a point behind fourth-placed Chelsea, who have a game in hand.

Villa, who remain a point above the bottom three in 17th, made the stronger start and took the lead via Toby Alderweireld’s own goal – with the Spurs defender prodding Anwar El Ghazi’s cross past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

The Belgian atoned for his error by equalising with a superb angled effort that flew into the top right corner of the Villa goal from 10 yards.

Spurs, who always looked dangerous in attack, went in front when Steven Bergwijn won a penalty after being fouled by home defender Bjorn Engels.

Son’s initial spot-kick was saved by Villa goalkeeper Pepe Reina, but the South Korean forward followed up to score and become the first Asian player to reach 50 Premier League goals.

The hosts responded after the break with Engels heading in from a Jack Grealish corner to level the scores.

However, another Engels mistake allowed Son to race clear late on to place the ball past Reina as Villa’s miserable run against sides in the top half of the table continued.
