Roma make loan cash offer for Arsenal midfielder

Serie A club Roma have made a move for Arsenal midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

The Daily Mail says Roma have offered a six month loan deal for Maitland-Niles with the prospect of the transfer becoming permanent for £8.4million.

Jose Mourinho’s club held discussions last week and have stepped up negotiations with an offer as they look to secure the 24-year old’s signature next week.

Maitland-Niles was frustrated to see a move to Everton fall through in the summer after Arsenal blocked the transfer and has been keen to play regular football.

Roma are offering a loan fee of around £600,000.

Maitland-Niles has found game time hard to come by at the Emirates this season despite being blocked from leaving back in the summer.

I contacted Mourinho for Super Eagles job – Pinnick

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, president, Amaju Pinnick revealed he held talks with Roma manager, Jose Mourinho, in its search to replace Gernot Rohr as Super Eagles coach.

Pinnick stated this during a media parley with sports journalists in Lagos.

He also hinted that the interim coach of the team Austin Eguavoen might not take the squad to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which begins January 9, 2022 in Cameroon as the federation may announce the new coach in “within the next week or so.”

The NFF boss added that the emphasis on the new coach is discipline.

He said: “The emphasis on the new coach is discipline. We will look at his antecedents on discipline.

“Secondly, we will also look at how hungry he is to win trophies because if they are hungry it supersedes so many things and if he wants to win he will instil discipline. We will look at all these things but I cannot make a pronouncement emphatically because I will be undermining my executive committee.

“So, until my executive committee comes out within the next week or so to say this is the name because the technical committee has to bring their presentation to the executive committee. It is going to be a seamless movement to the current team headed by Eguavoen.

“But we have spoken to three top coaches and Peseiro, whose name has been going around, is one of the coaches and I can tell you he is a top coach.”

He added, “We also talked to Mladen (Krstajic) but after talking to him he got a job with a top club in Israel, Maccabi Tel Aviv. You can see these are coaches that are hungry and ready to take Nigeria as a home; they are people that we know are ready to face the challenge from the 200 million Nigerians.

“They are coaches who the players cannot be bigger than and I believe we are doing everything we can and that’s why we interface with the ministry on every level.

“Of course Mourinho, I am not going to tell you we didn’t talk to Mourinho because we did and the (sports) minister also talked to Mourinho and there is nothing wrong with it.”

Pinnick refused to mention the coach who will manage the Eagles at the AFCON but noted that the new coach must guarantee to win the 2022 Nations Cup.

He added, “If the coach will give us the Nations Cup, he will be drafted in immediately. I am not going to tell you that it will be later, because of what essence is the recruitment? If the executive committee says yes and we are ready, what are we waiting for?

“When I spoke with one of the coaches on Tuesday, he was already scouting our players and was telling me things I didn’t even know about our players. It was quite impressive and he told me the strength of each player and he took me off guard. We are not going to experiment and if he can win the Nations Cup, no problem.”

The fan is now recovering in the Gemelli University Hospital.

After the win, Mourinho said: “I only realized [about the incident] at the end of the match.

“If he gives me his address, I’ll send him my jacket, so the next time he comes to the stadium with this cold, he’ll have my jacket with him.”

Roma legend Francesco Totti says Jose Mourinho has re-energised the club.

Totti is happy seeing Mourinho now in charge of the Giallorosso.

He told Sport: “I hope Roma finish the championship in the top four so as to play the next Champions League.

“I think Mou is a great coach and can lead the team to the top in Italy. The Roma fans don’t have much patience because they haven’t won anything for a long time, but with the arrival of Mourinho there is a lot of hope of regaining a title.

    “That’s what the fans need.”

I rate Mourinho but we turned him down – Ex-Bayern chief

Former Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admits they’ve never tried to hire Jose Mourinho in the past.

Rummenigge revealed the details to RAI Sport.

“A few years ago, Mourinho wanted to come to Germany to work at Bayern, but we felt he wasn’t the right man for the club.

“Personally, he always made a good impression on me. I hope that he can find success at Roma, because he needs to win on a daily basis.”

He added, “The philosophy of Bayern Munich has always been the same: have success, but with the books balanced. That is part of the culture of German football.

“We might not make many big splashes on the transfer market, but we can win the Champions League even without spending huge sums, as we already proved.”

  • This season can be a painful one for body and soul – Mourinho

This season can be a painful one for body and soul – Mourinho

Roma coach Jose Mourinho says they need to buy in January after a poor first three months of the season.

Mourinho was speaking after Sunday’s shock defeat to Venezia.

“Until it becomes mathematically impossible, I want to keep saying fourth place is the target. Roma finished sixth or seventh the last few seasons, the club made an effort over the summer, but it was more reactive transfer activity than building,” he said.

“I don’t think this squad is stronger than last season. We lost a lot of experience, we had to bring in players to replace those who left, many of them lack experience at this level.

“As a coach with a three-year contract, this season can be a painful one for body and soul, but still a very, very important one for me to understand something I couldn’t have understood before I arrived. I already know more than I did two months ago.”

Serie A: Mourinho struggles as Venezia shock Roma

Jose Mourinho’s struggles at Roma continued as minnows Venezia came from 2-1 down to sink the Italian giants.

Roma have won just one of their past seven matches and remain 12 points off leaders Napoli in Serie A.

Mattia Caldara put the hosts in front in the third minute, before goals from Eldor Shomurodov and Tammy Abraham put Roma ahead at the break.

Mattia Aramu’s penalty levelled the scores with David Okereke scoring the winner in the 74th minute.

Roma have now lost four of their last seven matches, a run which includes a 6-1 defeat to Norweigen side Bodo/Glimt in the Europa Conference League.

Venezia’s victory was just their third of the campaign, and it was the first time they’ve scored more than two goals in a game this season.

Jose Mourinho criticises Tottenham for sacking Nuno

Roma manager Jose Mourinho has criticised Tottenham for sacking Nuno.

Nuno was relieved of his duties as Spurs boss on Monday after just 10 league games in charge, with Spurs winning five and losing five since the former Wolves boss became the first full-time Tottenham coach since Mourinho’s sacking in April.

Mourinho told Sky Italia: “Nuno Espirito Santo did a great job at Wolverhampton, not in a year or a few months, but in four or five years.

“I can say that now (Tottenham) have a very good coach, but even before they had a very good coach.”

Mourinho’s comments appear to also be a dig at new Spurs boss Antonio Conte, with the Special One a major rival of the Italian coach during their time at Manchester United and Chelsea respectively.

  • Mourinho’s Roma suffer 6-1 defeat in Europa Conference League

Mourinho’s Roma suffer 6-1 defeat in Europa Conference League

Jose Mourinho suffered one of his biggest defeats of his coaching career as AS Roma stumbled to a shock 6-1 loss at Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night.

Erik Botheim and Ola Solbakken scored twice each for the home side, who led 2-1 at halftime and ran rampant in the second period to stun the Italians.

It was the first time in 1,008 games as a coach that a Mourinho side conceded six goals or more.

He did rest a number of first-team regulars, perhaps in anticipation of a comfortable night, and was made to pay.

“I decided to play with this line-up, so the responsibility is mine,” the 58-year-old Portuguese told reporters.

“I did it with good intentions, to give an opportunity to those who work hard and to rotate the squad on a synthetic pitch in cold weather.

“I never disguised the fact we were a squad with real limitations. We have 13 players who represent one team, the others are on a different level.

“We lost against a team that showed more quality on the night. It’s that simple.”

The defeat may not have been quite as painful for Mourinho as Real Madrid’s humiliating 5-0 loss to Barcelona in 2010.

But Roma, who started the Europa Conference League with two wins, are now in second in the group on six points, one behind Bodo/Glimt.

Serie A: I respect Jose Mourinho a lot – Allegri

Juventus coach Max Allegri says they meet Roma today in top shape.

However, Allegri will delay naming his starting XI as he considers how to approach the game.

“Clear ideas are big words,” Allegri said at a press conference. “Today, for the first time, I see the whole team together.

“The Europeans returned between Wednesday and Thursday, while the South Americans arrived yesterday. Let’s see what we’ll do. I’ll decide in the morning.

“Juventus vs. Roma is always a great match where there has often been controversy. There’s [Jose] Mourinho, who has given them character. They are ahead of us, and we must score points to not fall behind the best in the championship.

“We need to prepare well and turn the switch back on immediately after the break.”

Allegri says he’s looking forward to facing Jose Mourinho again.

“Mourinho is a coach who has won a lot and I respect him a lot,” Allegri added. “It’s in his character to, every now and then, do like he did with Manchester a few years ago.

“Moreover, that gesture of the ears with Manchester United he did it at the end of Juventus’ most beautiful games. In the end, nobody remembers it because we lost.

“It pleases me to have a coach of his value back in Italy.”
