Mourinho has changed our mentality – Roma midfielder

Roma midfielder Jordan Veretout says they face Juventus this weekend.

Veretout admits coach Jose Mourinho is changing their “mentality”.

He said, “We always play to win and that is our objective going to Turin. We have a coach who won almost everything and that makes a difference. Winning away to Juventus would be an important result.

“Mourinho changed our mentality and in training we work twice as hard to satisfy him. If we continue like this, we can go far.

“I am scoring goals more consistency now, but I can do even better. I practice penalties every day, trying to totally relax when I put the ball on the spot. It’s a psychological game with the goalkeeper, you have to stay calm and I’ll aim to keep that attitude even if one day I get it wrong.”

How Mourinho convinced me to leave Chelsea – Abraham

Roma striker, Tammy Abraham, has opened up on how Jose Mourinho convinced him to leave Chelsea this summer.

According to the 24-year-old, Mourinho advised him not to take the “easy option” of staying at Stamford Bridge.

Abraham stated this while speaking at St George’s Park on Thursday.

The player has been recalled to England’s squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary, a move which vindicates his decision to leave for Serie A this summer in a €40million deal.

“I think the first thing he [Mourinho] said to me, I picked up the phone and he was like: ‘Do you want to enjoy some sun or do you want to stay in the rain?’

“I laughed and I think at first I didn’t really think much of it when he was speaking because my mindset was that I wanted to be in the Premier League.

“When Mourinho speaks, you listen. I’ve learned so much tactically than I have in my lifetime. You need to learn off different managers,” Abraham said.

Abraham has scored four goals in his first 10 appearances for Roma so far.

He had netted 30 times in 82 appearances for Chelsea having joined them at seven but had to consider his options after manager Thomas Tuchel froze him out.

Tottenham should never have sacked Mourinho – Tony Adams

Arsenal great Tony Adams says Tottenham should never have sacked Jose Mourinho.

The Roma coach was infamously dumped on the eve of last season’s Carabao Cup final and replaced by rookie coach Ryan Mason.

Before Arsenal’s derby win yesterday, Adams stated: “Both clubs are in transition and I thought Mourinho was doing a fantastic job for Spurs to be honest.

“I never thought of him as a Tottenham manager, he’s not open enough.

“They were getting it together Spurs, and had a good way of playing. I don’t think they’ve got that going at the minute.”

Mourinho blasts referee, VAR after Roma lose derby to Lazio

Jose Mourinho blamed the referee and VAR for AS Roma’s 3-2 defeat to rivals Lazio in Serie A on Sunday, saying his side were dominant in spite of the result.

It was the Portuguese manager’s second loss since taking charge of the Italian side in the summer and Lazio led from the 10th minute until the final whistle.

However, Mourinho was unhappy about a potential foul in the build-up to Lazio’s second goal, scored by former Roma winger Pedro after 19 minutes.

He felt Lucas Leiva should have received a second booking after seeing Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini sent off against Udinese on Thursday.

“Italian football has improved a lot. But unfortunately, the referee and VAR were not at the right level for this fantastic match,” Mourinho told reporters.

“On the 2-0 goal it could have been 1-1, the referee and VAR made a mistake. This is too much.

“The lack of a second yellow for Leiva is also important. It was a similar situation to Pellegrini, he got a red but today there was nothing.

“We were the better team on the pitch. Obviously when you concede three goals, something has gone wrong, but the second and third were counter-attacks.

“We tried, we dominated. We gave everything and put Lazio in difficulty,” Mourinho said.

Roma, who are fourth in Serie A, face Zorya next in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday, before hosting Empoli in the league.

  • Why I celebrated Roma win like a child – Mourinho

Why I celebrated Roma win like a child – Mourinho

Jose Mourinho says he was lying to himself by attempting to play down the significance of his 1000th game in management after he oversaw a thrilling last-gasp win for AS Roma over Sassuolo on Sunday.

The win took Mourinho’s career tally to 638 victories.

The Portuguese has drawn 205 and lost 157 of his 1000 games as a manager.

“I told everyone lies! I had been saying to the team for days that this 1000th game was not important to me… but I had an incredible fear of losing!

“Luckily we won and I was running like a child today because I was feeling 12 years old, not 58,” he said after the game.

Roma are now top of Serie A, having won their first three fixtures.

Roma players still adjusting to my methods – Mourinho

Roma coach Jose Mourinho says the players are still adjusting to his system.

Mourinho was speaking ahead of tonight’s Europa Conference League qualifier against Trabzonspor.

Discussing last week’s victory against Fiorentina, he said, “We can still grow a lot. I congratulated [La Viola coach Vincenzo] Italiano because we have been working with the players for less than two months.

“And when his team plays like that I have to congratulate him.

“Maybe for a team like Inter it is different because Inzaghi has a team that plays with their eyes closed, it’s more difficult for us.”

Serie A club Roma are eyeing Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

New Roma coach Jose Mourinho worked with Loftus-Cheek while with Chelsea and wants to bring him to Italy, says Corriere dello Sport.

For the moment, no approach has been made, but Mourinho has recommended the midfielder’s signing after landing former Chelsea teammate Tammy Abraham.

Aston Villa, Southampton and Lazio are also being linked with Loftus-Cheek.

The England international spent last season on-loan with Fulham.

Mourinho never considered playing me at Man Utd – Depay

Barcelona striker Memphis Depay says he was forced out of Manchester United.

Depay has revealed what pushed him over the edge during his time in England.

He told El Periodico: “I’ve thought a lot about why it went wrong. The first season I had to adapt and it didn’t go well compared to my time at PSV.

“I lost a bit of confidence and I lost the confidence of [Louis] Van Gaal and his staff.

“It was hard for me. The following season I felt like I had more experience, but they changed the coach.

“Jose Mourinho came and I fought to get into the team but I think the idea of giving me a chance was never in his head. He never gave me an opportunity. Never.

“I went to his office but it changed nothing. It was a very difficult period, I felt that I was training well and the players themselves did not understand it.

“[Paul] Pogba and Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] told me: ‘Why don’t you ever play?’ For me that was the confirmation that I had no chance. And I realised that I didn’t want to be in a big club without playing.”

A surprise that Dzeko left Roma – Mourinho

Roma coach Jose Mourinho admits he didn’t expect to lose Edin Dzeko this summer.

The veteran striker left for Inter Milan last week.

“The reality is that we started the preseason thinking we had Dzeko,” Mourinho explained, “and it was a bit of a surprise for all of us what happened.”

He continued by saying that “the Dzeko situation, it’s a strange situation. It was clear that he would go to another club, but there were some doubts.”

“’He goes away, someone comes, he does not arrive,’” said the coach about the uncertainty, “I heard the players much more worried about this situation than focused on the end of the preseason training. “

  • Mourinho wants Super Eagles star at Roma

Mourinho wants Super Eagles star at Roma

AS Roma are looking at Leicester City forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, as an ideal option if they fail to sign Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham, according to Sky Sports.

Iheanacho only signed a new three-year deal with the Premier League side in April.

However, the Nigerian is now a target for Roma, who will be coached by Jose Mourinho from next season.

The Serie A club have already agreed a £34million deal with Chelsea for Abraham, but the 23-year-old is not very keen about the move.

Abraham fell out of favour after Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as head coach in January.

He was left out of the squad for the Champions League final against Manchester City, despite being fully fit.

Romelu Lukaku’s return to Stamford Bridge is set to push Abraham further down the pecking order.

Despite his limited game-time last season, Abraham finished as Chelsea’s joint-top scorer with 12 goals.

He is also reportedly attracting attention from Arsenal.
