    The Management of TheNewsGuru.com, TNG has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of popular cartoonist, Olaseinde Obe, popularly known as Obe Ess, who passed away aged 68.

    TNG in a statement signed by management expressed shock over his passage.

    It extended condolences to the family of Obe Ess praying that God should give them the fortitude to bear such an irreparable loss.

    His brother, Taiwo Obe — founder of the Journalism Clinic — broke the news on Tuesday via a post on social media platform X.

    Born in 1957, the cartoonist was a pioneering figure in Nigerian journalism.

    For decades, he served as a prominent cartoonist at The Guardian, where his signature illustrations combined with, satire and social commentary to powerful effect.

    He also served TNG soul searching and inspirational cartoons before he took ill.

    He was widely regarded as a master of the medium, using his pen as a tool for truth and change.

    Ess hailed from Igbara-Oke in Ondo State and came from a family steeped in media legacy — he was a nephew of the legendary photographer Peter Obe.

    “Ah! May The Almighty bless his soul and console all his loved ones — in the mighty name of Jesus Christ,” said Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos State Commissioner for Information.

    “Obe Ess was a damn good cartoonist whose conversational style was captivating, full of repartee and bone cracking humour. He was simple, neat and warm — always.

    Oborevwori mourns victims of Agbor tanker fire incident, directs remedial action

    Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has extended his heart-felt condolences to the families of victims of Sunday’s fire incident caused by a fallen diesel tanker in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of the state.

    The diesel tanker reportedly suffered a brake failure, and fell at a traffic light junction and exploded into a ball of fire that burnt four persons to death.

    Three other persons suffered various degrees of injury in the explosion and the resultant inferno.

    In commiserating with the Ika South Local Government and people of the area on the tragedy, which resulted in the loss of lives and property, the Governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, described the fire incident as horrifying and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured and fortitude to those bereaved in the unfortunate incident.

    Governor Oborevwori directed the State Ministry of Health, the State Emergency Management Agency and other relevant authorities to expedite action by providing the much-needed immediate support to all victims of the incident.

    The Governor commended the Fire Service, the good people of Ika South Local Government and security agencies who rallied round to put out the inferno and their dedication to assisting those affected by the fire incident.

    Sad! IGP mourns retired senior officers, Jitoboh, Longe

    The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has expressed profound shock and sadness over the recent passing of two retired senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force [NPF].

    Egbetokun’s message was contained in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, announcing that the retired Deputy Inspector-General Moses Ambakina Jitoboh and retired Assistant Inspector-General Pastor Bola Longe, have both passed away.

    Adejobi stated that Jitoboh, who previously served as the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in the Department of Information & Communications Technology (ICT) at Force Headquarters, died in a brief illness early on Friday, December 27, 2024.

    He added that Pastor Bola Longe, formerly the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Federal Operations at Force Headquarters Abuja, and previously the Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, passed on Sunday, December 22, 2024.

    “Their contributions to the Nigeria Police Force, dedication to service, and integrity will never be forgotten,” Egbetokun stated.

    “The passing of these officers is a great loss, not only to their families but to the entire Nigeria Police Force.”

    Extending his condolences on behalf of all officers of the Nigeria Police Force, IGP Egbetokun offered prayers and solace to the families, friends, and colleagues of the late officers, wishing them strength during this difficult time.

    “May their souls rest in peace,” he stated.

    The Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, had expressed shock and sadness over the death of the member representing Babura/Garki Federal Constituency of Jigawa State, Hon. Isa Dogonyaro.

    Hon. Dogonyaro died on Friday, May 10 in Abuja at the age of 46 after a brief illness.

    The Speaker, who said Dogonyaro would be sorely missed, noted the late lawmaker’s invaluable contributions to nation-building during the brief period he served in the House.

    Describing Hon. Dogonyaro as someone who gave a good account of himself in terms of providing good representation to his people, Speaker Abbas said his constituents, the people of Jigawa State and indeed the House have lost one of their finest.

    “I woke up this morning to the sad news of the passing away of a brother, friend and patriotic Nigerian, Hon. Isa Dogonyaro. I am pained by his death because he was a committed member of the 10th House, who has demonstrated zeal, determination, and dedication to nation-building.

    “He was a perfect gentleman and a sound lawmaker. His departure will leave a vacuum in the House. We will sorely miss him,” the Speaker said.

    The Speaker commiserated with his family, constituents, colleagues, and the people of Jigawa State, while praying to Allah to grant him Jannatul Firdaus.

    Speaker Abbas also prayed to Allah to grant the remaining members of the House the grace to be alive and healthy in the service to the country.

    Until his death, Hon. Dogonyaro, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Control.

    The Brickhall School, Abuja has mourned the memory of its late four-year-old pupil, Miguel Ovoke who choked on a piece of meat offal in the home-packaged meal he ate during school hours.

    Lamenting the death of the pupil, the school said it was greatly saddened that the life of the pupil could not be saved despite the timely response of its trained nurse and the eventual decision to rush him to a hospital.

    While noting the decision to mourn the late pupil by closing the school for one week, the school respectfully urged everyone connected to the tragedy to respect Miguel’s memory with dignity and peace while allowing medical professionals and law enforcement agencies to conclude with the autopsy.

    The school said:

    It is with profound sorrow and deepest sympathy that we at Brickhall School, Management and the Parents Teacher’s Forum express our heartfelt condolences to the family of our dearly beloved pupil, Miguel Ovoke.

    We are devastated to report that Miguel tragically passed away on April 24, 2024, following a sad incident where he choked on a piece of meat offal from his meal brought from home, despite the immediate and expert care provided by our dedicated staff and certified school nurse.

    In response to this heart-wrenching event, we convened an urgent meeting with our school community on the day of the incident.

    Out of respect for Miguel’s memory and to honor his bright spirit, we suspended classes for over a week, allowing our community time to mourn and reflect on this profound loss.

    We have cooperated fully with the relevant authorities to ensure a thorough and compassionate resolution for everyone affected, especially Miguel’s grieving family.

    The leadership of both the school and the Parents Teacher’s Forum has personally visited Miguel’s family to offer our support and condolences during this indescribably difficult time. We stand with them in their grief and extend our support to all who loved Miguel—his friends, classmates, and our entire community.

    As our school resumes, particularly for students preparing for their Senior and Junior School Certificate examinations, we reaffirm our commitment to the well-being and education of all our students.

    We have continued to work closely with medical professionals, law enforcement, and Miguel’s family to clarify the circumstances surrounding this tragedy.

    In these efforts, we strive for transparency and sensitivity, mindful that the narrative shared in public may not always capture the complexity of such a deeply personal and painful moment.

    As a school, we consider this a most tragic incident and continue to take steps to seek resolution.

    However, we want to firmly reiterate the following:

    1. Our duty of care has been efficient, and we have never recorded an incident of this magnitude.

    2. Our staff are trained on emergency procedures and first aid.

    3. Our licensed school nurse followed laid down procedures for handling such emergencies.

    The loss of Miguel Ovoke, a cherished member of the Brickhall School family, fills us with profound sadness.

    We extend our deepest condolences to his family and assure them—and all who grieve alongside them—of our unwavering support and heartfelt empathy.

    We respectfully urge everyone connected to this tragedy to honor Miguel’s memory with dignity and peace, while we allow the medical and law enforcement professionals to ascertain possible cause of death, as we continue identifying and engaging with the

    family.

    Death of Ovularia: Nollywood veterans, Jide Kosoko, ‘Oga Bello’, Amata, others mourn

    Old-time Nollywood actors, Jide Kosoko, Adebayo Salami and many others in the industry have paid glowing tributes to Elizabeth Evoeme, popularly known as Ovularia in the 1980s TV sitcom, ‘The New Masquerade’, passed away at the age of 81.

    Kosoko said the late Ovularia was a disciplined woman who had contributed immensely to the growth of the entertainment industry.

    Lizzy, as she was affectionately known by friends and family, was part of the original cast of the show that ran from the 1970s to the mid-1990s.

    Lizzy, born on December 1, 1942, died on Sunday in Port Harcourt surrounded by her loved ones, a family member told Vanguard.

    Mourning her passage, Kosoko said: “We have lost another gem though at a ripe age, I pray the almighty God grant her soul a peaceful rest.

    “We worked together on The New Masquerade, I was a guest artiste at that time, she was just fantastic. May her soul rest in peace and may God continue to keep us that are still alive.

    “Her virtue of discipline that has to do with keeping to call time, submitting to the directors’ wish at all time and other professional ethics she stood for, should be emulated by all other actors.”

    Also, Adebayo Salami, popularly known as “Oga Bello”, described death of the actress as shocking.

    He said, “We are all getting older but no one wants to die, we are going to miss her but her legacies still remain with us. We love her but God loves her most.”

    Fred Amata, also expressed shock over the death of the actress.

    Her death was announced by family on Tuesday.

    A statement from the Evoeme Emekalam family on her passing read: “Friends, fans, colleagues, the family of the legendary actress, Elizabeth Lizzy ‘Ovularia’ Evoeme would like to inform the public, everyone who loved her and work in ‘The New Masquerade,’ of her death. Elizabeth ‘Ovularia’ Evoeme will be deeply missed and loved by her family as well as you, her fans

    “We thank you all for your support and for respecting our privacy at this time. God bless you all and may our precious Elizabeth “Ovularia” Evoeme rest in perfect peace now and always.”

    Her daughter, Justina Ngozi Evoeme, who lives in London, confirmed news reports of Ovularia’s death, which she described as painful and shocking.

    On November 5, 2019, Evoeme’s rumored death was reportedly announced on Twitter by one Churchill Ebhodaghe without any detail as to what caused her rumored expiration.

    Ovularia denied the rumor and reportedly said on November 8, 2019 that those behind the rumor deserved to be punished.

    The New Masquerade was a long-running Nigerian sitcom that kept audiences laughing from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s. The show actually started as a radio program called ‘The Masquerade’ on the East Central State Broadcasting Corporation.

    It was subsequently adapted for television and renamed ‘The New Masquerade’. The show was created and written by James Iroha, who also starred in it as Gringory Akabogu.

    Popular actors such as Chika Okpala (known for his role as Chief Zebrudaya Okoroigwe Nwaogbe), Claude Eke — Jegede Sokoya and thrilled in the sitcom in those days.

    The New Masquerade was a cultural touchstone, offering humor and social commentary. It addressed real life issues faced by Nigerians at the time of its performance, making it more than just entertainment. It ran for many years and remains one of Nigeria’s longest running sitcoms.

    The Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has described as painful, the death of a member of the federal legislature in the Second Republic, Alhaji Sidi Ali.

    Ali, a veteran journalist and ex-lawmaker, died on Thursday at the age of 86.

    Speaker Abbas, in his condolence message issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, said the late Ali was a good ambassador of the National Assembly until his death.

    He also described the late Ali as one of the brilliant minds from the Northern part of Nigeria.

    The Speaker, while commiserating with the late Sidi Ali’s family, the people and government of Kano State, prayed Allah to grant him Jannatul Firdaus.

    President Tinubu mourns Jimi Solanke

    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has condoled with the family and friends of the iconic actor and playwright Jimi Solanke, who died on Monday, at the age of 81.

    This is contained in a statement by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, on Monday in Abuja.

    “President, who Tinubu mourned the literary and cultural virtuoso, described him as one of the finest of Nigeria’s creative artists and bastion of the cherished Nigeria’s mores and cultural heritage.

    “The President condoled with the Solanke family and all those who mourn this painful loss while praying for the peaceful repose of the beloved departed,” he said.

    The deceased, who was born on July 4, 1942, in Ipara, Remo, Ogun state is survived by his wife, Toyin.

    His career spanned seven decades, including appearances on Western Nigeria Television in the 1960s, international festivals in Senegal and Algeria in the 1970s.

    He also acted memorable roles in plays such as “Death and the King’s Horseman,” “Kurunmi,” and “Kongi’s Harvest.”

    The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse 111 has commiserated with the people of Olomu Kingdom over the passage of Ovie Richard Layeguen Ogbon, Ogoni-Oghoro 1, the Ohworode of Olomu Kingdom at 106.

    The Ogiame’s official condolence message was delivered on Wednesday to the Olomu people by three of his palace chiefs: Solomon Areyenka, Gabriel Awala, and Patrick Yalaju.

    The message was read by Areyenka on behalf of the other chiefs to the people at the Ohworode palace in Olomu Kingdom, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta.

    Ogiame described the transited king as a traditional ruler with a difference, “full of humility, peacemaker, a bridge builder and an embodiment of love.

    “We are consoled by the fact that Ohworode of Olomu Kingdom lived a fulfilled life.

    “His reign speaks volume. His legacies, the Olomu Kingdom should endeavour to sustain and build upon.

    “May his soul rest in perfect peace. Adieu Your Majesty,” Ogiame prayed.

    Responding, Mr Macaulay Ovbagbedia, the Otota of Olomu kingdom who spoke on behalf of the people,  said there had been an existing cordial relationship between the Olomu kingdom and Warri kingdom.

    “When Ohworode of Olomu Kingdom celebrated his 100 years birthday, the Olu of Warri Kingdom was here and the relationship has continued like that.

    “The departure of the Ohworode of Olomu Kingdom is a celebration because he lived a fulfilled life. We are happy that the relationship continues,” he said.

    Also, the eldest son of the Ohworode of Olomu Kingdom, Godwin Ogbon thanked the Olu of Warri Kingdom for commiserating with them and the entire Olomu Kingdom.

    Recalled that the passage of the traditional ruler was officially announced on March 17, at a meeting of the traditional council at the Ohworode palace.

    The departed king who celebrated his 106 birthday in January,  was born on Jan. 20, 1917 and retired as Inspector of Education in the defunct Bendel State.

    The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has described as shocking, the death of the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA), Peace Anyiam-Osigwe.

    The Speaker said the Nigerian and indeed the African movie industries have lost one of its finest and committed members.

    Gbajabiamila recalled that the late Anyiam-Osigwe touched many lives positively during her lifetime, using her network of friends and associates across the continent.

    In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Lanre Lasisi, the Speaker said the late AMAA founder would be remembered for her humanitarian services and positive impact on the industry.

    Gbajabiamila prayed to the Almighty God to grant her eternal rest and give her family and many associates the fortitude to bear the loss.
