Human rights group mourns Mohammed Fawehinmi

The Centre for Human and Socioeconomic Rights says the demise of Mohammed Fawehinmi, eldest son of late legal icon and activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, is a terrible loss.

Mr Alex Omotehinse, National President of the group, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria while reacting to the death of the lawyer.

NAN reports that Mohammed died on Wednesday in Lagos. He was aged 52.

Omotehinse said the news was ” shocking”.

“The fact remains that among the children of the late legal icon, Mohammed was the only one who identified with us and remained with us, despite the challenges he faced.

“Mohammed stood with us in the struggle to defend the masses.

“Now that he has again dropped the baton, a very big vacuum has been created,” he said.

According to him, the death of Mohammed Fawehinmi implies that Gani Fawehinmi’s household may be finally missed in the activism circle.

“It is only Mohammed that carried the mantle, despite his health challenges.

“When some of us see him, we believe Gani is still alive, because he was bold, spoke like his father, was courageous and never looked at his challenges.”

The rights activist recalled how civil society groups, alongside Mohammed, attended the burial of late Mr Yinka Odumakin, another activist, who died recently.

He added that the late younger Fawehinmi also joined them recently, during a courtesy visit to the residence of another late activist, Mr Innocent Chukwuma .

Omotehinse said the death was a huge loss and very sad one, praying God to console the late Mohammed’s mother and family.

NAN sources indicated that Mohammed had complained of breathing difficulties and was taken to a hospital where he died.

He had a law degree from the University of Buckingham, England and was called to the Nigerian bar in 1998.

In 2003, he had an accident in Lagos which affected his spinal cord and confined him to a wheelchair. (NAN)

  • Kashamu: Mourn me as you like when I die, Obasanjo replies Tinubu, Fayose

Kashamu: Mourn me as you like when I die, Obasanjo replies Tinubu, Fayose

Nigeria’s former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has said he does not care what people say about him when he die.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Obasanjo had on Saturday released a controversial statement on the death of Senator Buruji Kashamu, saying that the former lawmaker used politics and legal means to escape justice but could not use the same to stop death.

In his words: “The life and history of the departed have lessons for those of all us on this side of the veil. Senator Esho Jinadu (Buruji Kashamu) in his lifetime used the maneuver of law and politics to escape from facing justice on alleged criminal offence in Nigeria and outside Nigeria.

“But no legal, political, cultural, social or even medical maneuver could stop the cold hand of death when the Creator of all of us decides that the time is up.

“May Allah forgive his sin and accept his soul into Aljanah, and may God grant his family and friends fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

Obasanjo’s statement generated lots of controversies, with former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu attacking him for his reckless statement.

But Obasanjo in an interview with Premium Times said it was okay for people to mourn every death but that the living, including himself, must draw the right lessons from the lives of those who have died.

He said it was only in doing this that the society can make progress.

“When I was growing up, in our community, when anyone known with bad character died, we usually only mourn him and bury him. No eulogy. No praise-singing.

“There is an English saying that urges us never to talk ill of the dead. But in this case, we are not talking ill of the dead. We are only drawing lessons from the life and history of the dead. I am not gloating over his death. It is sad for anyone to die and we must mourn him.

“But we must learn from such a passage. There will be bad lessons. There will be good lessons. But we should not just be praise-singing or eulogising the dead, especially when there is no need to do so.

“We should not cover up bad histories and conducts so that the right lessons can be learnt,” Obasanjo states.

The former President said he did not care what people would say about him when he died because he had said the right thing about Kashamu.

“As you know, I say my mind as truthfully as I know them and in line with my convictions. People are free to say whatever they want about my comment. I don’t begrudge people for holding opinions on whatever I say or do.

“Let people say whatever they like when I transit. Now that I am alive, am I not being abused? Whenever I transit, let people say whatever they know or think about me. Let them say it as it is. What my maker thinks of me is what matters most,” he added.

14 burn to death in Borno IDP camp, Buhari mourns

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday evening described as “extremely horrifying,” the news of the death of 14 persons and injury to many from a fire incident at an IDP camp in Ngala, Borno State.

According to reports, the blaze broke out mid-morning in a camp holding some 70,000 people in the town of Gamboru, close to the border with Cameroon.

“We recovered 14 burnt bodies from the gutted shelters and another 15 who sustained varying degrees of burns from the fire,” militia leader said.

More than 200 shelters were destroyed, rendering 1,250 people homeless, said a rescue official, who asked not to be named.

“The fire killed 14 people, six from the same family, and left 15 with injuries, seven of them critically,” said the official.

It was not clear what caused the fire but residents blamed it on arson after a suspect was arrested with a lighter in his pocket, another militia member Shehu Mada said.

The decade-long Boko Haram conflict has killed 36,000 people and forced 1.8 million from their homes in northeast Nigeria.

Reacting to the sad incident, the President directed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to investigate and report the circumstances leading to the incident, and advise on how a future occurrence will be averted.

He further directed that urgently needed assistance be immediately given to the victims, and prayed to Allah to repose the souls of those whose lives were lost, and the quick recovery of the injured persons.

  • 47 soldiers die in Boko Haram ambush, Buhari mourns

President Muhammadu Buhari and Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces has expressed “profound grief and sorrow’’ over the loss of 47 soldiers ambushed by Boko Haram terrorists in Gorgi Village, Borno State.

“Sacrifices of our gallant patriots cannot be quantified, and their sacrifices cannot go in vain,’’ Buhari said on Tuesday night.

The killing of 47 soldiers on Monday in one fell swoop, was one of the worst moments in recent times in the 11 year-old Boko Haram war, which goes on ferociously despite official line that the enemies have been technically defeated.

While the Nigerian Army has dispatched a team to assess the situation and report back to the government, Buhari rallied the remaining troops not to allow the tragedy affect their morale.

President Buhari said “despite the tragedies and incidents, we cannot allow anarchists and mass murderers to hold the country hostage.’’

He assured that his administration will continue to motivate and equip them adequately in order to cope with the complex challenges of unconventional warfare.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian military has tried to explain how the 47 Nigerian soldiers paid the supreme price on the Boko Haram frontline on Tuesday.

The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. John Enenche said the men died when the terrorists ambushed the troops, who were inside a truck providing logistics back up for the frontline troops.

He explained that the truck that also conveyed explosives was hit by terrorists’ fire leading to explosion that affected other trucks conveying fuel.

“As a result, the troops suffered some casualties in the attack leading to killing of 47 soldiers.”

According to him, if you clear a place and you don’t consolidate, there is a problem and so we needed to go with reinforcement of artillery of the land component.

“We also need to go with extra ammunition and supplies.

“The echelon that was behind was the supply echelon. It was carrying fuel and weapons. It was targeted and fired at. The truck was carrying the bomb and then there was explosion.

“The explosion in the real sense was what killed the majority of our troops including the pockets that came to attack.

“That transferred to the other trucks carrying the fuel which caught fire. As a result of that we recorded 47 deaths after the mopping up.

Enenche said despite the deaths, troops yet again recorded success against the remnants of Boko Haram terrorists by killing scores of them at Gorigi in the Allagarno Forest general area of Borno.

Enenche said that the troops of Operation Lafiya Dole achieved the feat when the land component came into contact with mounted terrorists during clearance operations along the forest axis on March 23.

He explained that air assets, including an Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform and fighter jets, were immediately deployed to provide close air support to the troops.

According to him, while the ISR platform provided situational awareness to the troops, the fighter jets engaged the terrorists, immobilising their gun trucks and neutralising an unspecified number of the terrorists.

“As you know, we are in a fluid conflict situation and our gallant troops are out there at the frontlines.

“Between 21 and 23 March, troops of Operation Lafiya Dole were on clearance and fighting patrol operation to Gorgi in Borno which successfully done.

“Some others who attempted to withdraw were also mopped up by the jets in follow-on attacks.

“During the air bombardment, none of the terrorists that came to attack escaped but we cannot ascertain the casualty figure of the terrorists now,” he said.

“The Defence Headquarters commiserate with the families of our fallen gallant heroes who paid the supreme price in the course of defending our fatherland.

“We assure Nigerians that the Armed forces and other security agencies in furtherance of the objective of restoring peace and security in the North East and other parts of the country will continue to sustain the offensive against the enemies of our nation,” he said
