Ten Hag doing brilliant job at Man Utd – Moyes

Former Manchester United manager David Moyes has come to the aid of a colleague.

The Scotsman heaped praise on United manager Erik ten Hag this week, talking about the pressure on his shoulders.

Despite the Dutchman’s position coming under intense scrutiny at United, Moyes believes he is doing a great job.

“I think he’s doing a brilliant job,” Moyes told BBC Sport.

“I think he’s shown brilliant resilience in the situation that he’s in and I think he should be credited for how well he’s conducted himself.

“As far as I know, I don’t see him ducking any questions or any media interviews that you people (the media) put forward to him,’ he added.

“I think you have to give him great credit for that but it’s a job that is going to attract immense pressure, people talking, so I have to say that I think he’s doing a brilliant job.”

Europa Conference League: Moyes hands over medal to father

David Moyes handed his Europa Conference League winners’ medal to his father after ending West Ham United’s 43-year wait for a trophy.

Jarrod Bowen’s dramatic last-minute goal sank Fiorentina 2-1 on a historic and emotional night in Prague.

The victory helped the Hammers to secure the first piece of silverware since 1980’s FA Cup, and a first European trophy since 1965,

Moyes’ dad, 87-year-old David Snr, has been on every step of West Ham’s European tour and joined his son on the pitch after the final whistle.

“He was the first one, I thought I should get it round his neck,” said the jubilant West Ham boss. “He’s watched a lot over the years and I hope he enjoyed it.”

West Ham led through a Said Benrahma penalty kick on the hour but were immediately pegged back by Giacomo Bonaventura’s strike.

But when Bowen chased Lucas Paqueta’s ball over the top, Moyes almost found himself going full Jose Mourinho.

“The moment he went through I was edging down the touchline,” he added. “If it was going to be anyone, I thought ‘this is the moment’.

“But I couldn’t do a full Mourinho knee slide as the grass was a bit dry and I’d have ended up on my belly.”

Moyes has written his name in West Ham folklore, joining Ron Greenwood and John Lyall as trophy-winning Hammers managers.

A place in next season’s Europa League means the club has qualified for Europe three campaigns in a row, for the first time.

“I actually think the last two years have been an incredible journey,” he said.

“It’s an incredible achievement to do so well in Europe. You look at some of the very good teams who find it a struggle. It’s great credit, we’ve turned a disappointing season into a super season.”

Bowen has come a long way from beginning his career at non-league Hereford, and he is planning to party.

“I’m so buzzing, all of us are just going to go mad I think,” he said. “You have to celebrate.

“When the final whistle went I just thought ‘this party is going to be crazy’.

“I’m just a little boy from Leominster who never thought I’d be talking like this. My family are crying and it just shows me how far I’ve come.”

It was a memorable way to sign off for Declan Rice who is destined to leave this summer.

He is with the legacy of becoming only the third captain, along with Bobby Moore and Billy Bonds, to lift silverware in the club’s 128-year history.

The England midfielder has a year left on his contract, and West Ham hold the option of another, but Arsenal are poised to firm up their interest in the coming days.

The only downside to West Ham’s big night was an object thrown from their end which left Cristiano Biraghi with a nasty cut on the back of his head.

The incident forced referee Carlos Del Cerro Grande to briefly halt play while a message over the public address (PA) system implored the fans to stop throwing missiles.

The club “unreservedly condemned” the incident while a UEFA inquest will follow, with charges likely.

It was a double Cup disappointment for Fiorentina, who were only narrowly beaten 1-2 by Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia last month.

“We lost two finals playing really well, and it’s a shame,” said coach Vincenzo Italiano. “Tonight, I honestly didn’t imagine it could finish like this.”

EPL: We’ll play to beat Arsenal – David Moyes

West Ham boss David Moyes insists they’ll test Arsenal on Sunday.

The Irons need a result to maintain distance from the bottom three.

Moyes said, “We will put out a team that will try and beat Arsenal. Last year, we challenged a lot of the so-called ‘big teams’ so we will try to give them a good game.

“They have got themselves in a great position [to possibly win the league.]

“They are very good. And they have a good record on the road. It makes it a difficult game but we have had a good couple of games against Arsenal over the past years and hopefully, we can do that again.

“I don’t think we have many memories from the Newcastle game. In the main, we have done very well at home and hopefully we can do that and show what we are about.”

  • Rice worth more than Enzo Fernandez – Moyes

Rice worth more than Enzo Fernandez – Moyes

West Ham manager David Moyes can see captain Declan Rice commanding a British record transfer fee.

Chelsea signed Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez for £107m on Wednesday, making him the most expensive Premier League signing ever.

England midfielder Rice, 24, has played 224 times for the Hammers since his 2017 debut and now captains the club.

“Undoubtedly Declan is going to be a top player,” said Moyes.

“He’ll be a British transfer record if he ever leaves West Ham.”

Rice, who joined the Hammers youth set-up in 2014, only has 18 months left on his contract and has reportedly turned down new deals.

Asked after Saturday’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Newcastle if Rice’s departure was inevitable, Moyes said: “I hope it’s not. I hope he sees his time here.”

Argentina World Cup winner Fernandez, 22, had only made 29 appearances in Europe, having joined Benfica last summer from River Plate.

Rice has been a senior international since 2018, first with the Republic of Ireland and then England, while Fernandez only made his Argentina debut in September.

Moyes said: “There’s a lot of talk about it and when you see what’s going about for the prices, I think Dec will be blowing that out of the water, that’s for sure, when it comes around.”

  • Arteta explains relationship with David Moyes

Arteta explains relationship with David Moyes

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admits he’s close to West Ham United manager David Moyes.

Arteta played under Moyes for six years during his time at Everton, who signed him from Real Sociedad in 2005 when the Spaniard was just 22. They enjoyed immediate success together, with Arteta’s arrival playing an important role in the Toffees’ top-four finish in 2004/05 as they reached the Champions League qualifiers.

He would go on to play over 200 times for Moyes, and admits he learnt plenty from the Scottish boss in that time that helped shape his managerial philosophy, and was happy to pay tribute to his former boss before they meet again on Boxing Day.

“He was extremely supportive all the time and everything we did together, and I have incredible memories with him because we had a very successful time together,” Arteta said.

“I’m so grateful first off for the trust he always showed in me. For how much I learned of him on the field, off the field, about building a team, about getting the right characters in the team to build what you want.

“I know for sure he has been working the team really, really hard since he took over.

“He absolutely maximized the potential of that team, and took that team to a different level.

“I’m sure they have been working really hard like we all have been in this period, and it will be a very difficult contest.”

  • EPL: We’re excited facing Chelsea today – Moyes

EPL: We’re excited facing Chelsea today – Moyes

West Ham boss David Moyes is excited facing Chelsea today.

The Hammers host the Premier League leaders for the early kickoff today.

Moyes said, “We are playing the Champions League winners. Last week we played the Champions League finalists as well. I said a few weeks ago, I really want us to play the best teams and see how we do and see where we are at, it is the only way to find out.

“I said at the start: ‘Can we challenge them?’ ‘How well can we do against them?’ So we’ll try and do that against Chelsea.

“We know it will be a big test.

“Everybody playing against Chelsea is finding how difficult it is. We have seen the quality in Europe against Juventus as well so it’s very hard to find any weaknesses in their team, they’ve got a really strong squad as everybody’s aware. So it will be difficult. I’ve got to say it’s a tough, tough game and I’ve got to say the manager has done a really good job since he’s come in. He has won trophies and he’s been successful, which at Chelsea is the requirement. You have to come in and compete at the top.

“But it’s a game we played quite well in this game in recent seasons, we had a great win when we were trying to stay up when Yarmolenko scores the winner late on in one of the games I will always remember.

“The three points were vital. We needed to beat a team near the top and I think last year we played quite well, we got unlucky that we didn’t get something out of those games. But let’s not kid ourselves, Chelsea are a top team and a team in form as well.”

  • I think the club are firmly behind Mourinho – Moyes

Former Manchester United manager David Moyes says he thinks Mourinho retains the full backing of the club, despite the poor start.
Moyes succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, but was sacked 10 months into a six-year contract.
“I think the club are firmly behind the manager,” said the former Everton and West Ham boss.
“He’s been a winner, Jose, throughout his career. So I don’t see why that should suddenly change.”
Moyes, 55, says United’s comeback win against Newcastle at Old Trafford on Saturday showed the fans are also behind the Portuguese.
“It was a great result, any team that comes from 2-0 down,” added the Scot.
“But the one thing that happens at Old Trafford is the crowd gets right behind you, and is always supportive of the manager and the players.”

  • Moyes wants West Ham playing like Tottenham and Chelsea in the future

West Ham manager David Moyes says he wants his side to play “like Tottenham, like Chelsea” if he remains in charge beyond the end of this season.

Moyes, 54, has guided the side out of the relegation zone and up to 15th place in the Premier League since he was appointed in November.

He signed a short-term contract following the sacking of Slaven Bilic.

“I’ve got an idea in my head how I want it to look,” Moyes told the BBC’s Football Focus.

“I want us to go to those teams and say, ‘we’re having a game with you and we’re going to see if we can beat you’,” added Moyes.

“At the moment, we just don’t have the same level of quality of players as those teams do, but I’m saying that for probably every other team bar the top six or seven in the Premier League.”

The former Everton, Manchester United and Sunderland manager lost three of his first four games in charge as he got to grips with his new side.

However, since the start of December, Moyes has led the side to a win over Chelsea, draws against Arsenal and Tottenham and a narrow defeat at Manchester City.

West Ham have lost once in their last eight Premier League games.

Will West Ham do any transfer business in January?

The January transfer window gives them an opportunity to strengthen and it has also been reported they would be happy to sell striker Javier Hernandez.

Moyes admits he does not know how busy he will be this month.

He said: “We’d like to add to it if we can but I want to try to get the right type of players. I want to try to help West Ham prepare now and also have that vision when I lift my eyes a little bit higher up.

“I want to look a wee bit further forward and what we should be trying to get.

“When you start doing that, it doesn’t make it quite as easy a decision as saying ‘let’s get somebody for today’ because we also need it for tomorrow as well.”

  • West Ham boss, David Moyes says, ‘I can do any job in the world’

David Moyes says he could manage any team in the world and wants to prove it at West Ham.Since the Scot was appointed Hammers boss last month, the club has moved out of the relegation zone and are unbeaten in their last three games.

Saturday’s 3-0 victory at Stoke followed a victory over Chelsea and a draw against Arsenal.

“I think I’m capable of doing the job at any club in the world so I’m sure I can do it at West Ham,” he said.

West Ham are now 15th in the Premier League and travel to Arsenal on Tuesday for a Carabao Cup quarter-final.

Moyes, 54, is rebuilding his reputation after unsuccessful spells in charge of Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland.

“I have to come here and show I can do it,” he said. “You have to come and show what you can do. Your reputation doesn’t stand for anything.

“You have to come here and try to get up and show you’re capable of doing the job.”

  • West Ham earn first win under Moyes as they beat Chelsea

West Ham won for the first time under David Moyes as Marko Arnautovic’s first goal for the club proved enough to beat a disjointed Chelsea at London Stadium.

The Hammers scored the only goal after just six minutes when Arnautovic curled a deft strike into the bottom corner after exchanging passes with Manuel Lanzini on the edge of the area.

Chelsea responded well before the break but were repelled by an organised West Ham defence and two solid saves from Adrian, retaining his spot in place of the dropped Joe Hart.

Both sides became increasingly ragged in the second half but West Ham desperately held on, with Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata firing wide when clean through late on.

Despite victory, the hosts remain in the bottom three, though they have drawn level on points with 17th-placed West Brom, who face fellow strugglers Swansea at 15:00 GMT.

Defeat means champions Chelsea will finish the weekend 14 points behind leaders Manchester City if Pep Guardiola’s side beat rivals Manchester United on Sunday.
