  • Why I buy cars for people but don’t own one – Mr. Eazi

Hip hop sensation, Tosin Ajibade (popularly called Mr. Eazi) has explained why he is comfortable buying cars for people even when he doesn’t have one to himself.

Mr. Eazi in a recent interview with The Punch said he preferred using Uber. He further said, “If your self-esteem is based on how much you have in your bank account, then you have a serious self-esteem issue. Right from when I sang my very first song, someone offered me N80m record deal but I turned it down and at the time, I did not have N300,000 in my account.

My first record deal offer from the UK was £356,000, I turned it down but at the time, I had done a tour and the total amount I earned was £12,500. I used the money to shoot the videos of some of my songs. I was left with £20; they were offering me £365,000, but I turned it down. The reason I did that was because my value was not dependent on what was in my account.

Till today, I use Uber but I do not care and by the way, I don’t even pay for the ride because I was given Uber credit. But if you see me in the Uber vehicle and feel that Mr Eazi is poor, what is my business (with that)? For instance, everybody around me has cars, and besides, I buy cars for people. If it makes sense for me to use an Uber, why should I drive? Why would I pay about N100m for a car that I would probably drive just five times a year?

There are better things to do with that money. In the short time I have spent on earth, I have made a lot of money. While I was into mining, I had so much money that I was living at a place that was a stone’s throw away from the airport in Accra and I was paying my rent in dollars.

I was making a lot of money. That shows you how expensive it was but I went from there to squatting with my friend in a one-room apartment. I was sleeping on the floor in his room. Also, when I was doing the business of selling beverages, we started with a crate and in a short while, we began to import four containers every two weeks. From importing four containers every two weeks, we went back to nothing. In my life, I have had ups and down. If my self-worth was based on material things, I would have killed myself.”

The singer admitted that he had received a lot of backlash on social media simply because of his relationship with Temi, one of the daughters of a billionaire oil magnate, Femi Otedola.

However, Mr Eazi said such things would never faze him.

People can say what they want to say and if you want to let everything they say about you bother you, then you are not going to live, especially when you are in the public eye.

You have to realise that as an entertainer, your life becomes a form of entertainment to others. I really do not care about what anybody thinks. He that is in me is greater than he that is in the world, so why care about what the world is saying?” The singer said.

  • My performances can be bitter, sweet- Mr Eazi

‘Pour me water’ sensation, Mr Eazi is no doubt a talented artiste who doesn’t just understand music, but also the business side of music.

Eazi who recently unveiled his album ‘Lagos to London’ has launched his mentorship programme ‘Empawa’ targeted at empowering budding young talent to shoot for global success.

At the media parley for Empawa on Tuesday 20th of November 2018, Eazi opened up about the bitter sweet side of being a performing artiste.

“Even me that you see here I am learning on the job, my performances keep changing and I keep adapting. Even me I need help, I perform sometimes and people scream and I perform in some other places and someone say:’ This guy sef, I just wasted my money’.

He also noted that artistes need to find their rhythm, adding that there is no particular formula when it comes to succeeding as a stage performer.

“I have done a show where I used live band, people were screaming, I took that same band to outside Nigeria and people were complaining. After that we had to switch it to live band and a DJ. The first time we did it, people loved it. There is no actual formula; you have to find your rhythm”.

The Banku music boss also noted that Adekunle Gold is one of his favourite performers.

“Adekunle Gold is one of the best performers I know . I tell him everytime,If he is here he will tell you”.

When asked If he has sole right to his creative content as an artiste, he said:”No body owns my content, I own my content, everything. I’m not trying to make someone else a slave.I am not an expert, I just started doing music 2 years ago, I didn’t plan to do this”.

  • Dating Otedola’s daughter is one of my best part of 2017- Mr Eazi

Afro-pop singer, Mr Eazi has said he had interesting moments in 2017. The talented singer stated that despite being heavily condemned all year round particularly for his claim of pioneering the infusion of Ghanaian lingo in lyrics, he still has interesting moments in 2017.

He said, “I think at the end of the day it is still all love. For instance, I’m just coming straight from Benin, which we shut down. What I saw there, I didn’t know people partied on Wednesdays.

“I was so shocked the DJ had more Mr Eazi songs than my DJ. So after I had finished performing, the DJ continued playing songs. It just goes to show that there is still love and it is just teasing.”

Reacting to people who bashed him for running out of hit songs, the ‘Leg Over’ crooner said his songs are still being listened to.

“I think it can be some people’s opinion but if you go out, I’m still performing those songs. I dropped my mixtape in February, and the plan was to promote the mixtape. And I have toured the world with the mixtape,” he said.

“In Benin, I was still performing ‘Short Skirt’, ‘Leg Over’, ‘Business’, ‘Life is Eazi’, that is four songs from a mixtape in one year, and I still performed ‘Pour Me Water’. If I can do that in one year, I think that’s not valid.”

  • I once sold phones at Computer Village- Mr Eazi

Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade fondly called Mr Eazi in the Nigerian music industry has had his own fair share of life’s ups and downs. The singer who was backlashed by fans and colleagues for claiming to have pioneered the infusion of Ghanaian lingos into the Nigerian music industry, revealed that he once sold phones at Computer Village, in Ikeja, Lagos.

Speaking as a guest on a radio show, he said after obtaining his masters degree, he had to sell phones . According to him: “After I came back from Ghana, I got a job in oil and gas in Port Harcourt that paid about six thousand dollars per month but I quit because I was not finding fulfillment in it.

“I mean it was the same thing everyday, the same routine over and over again. The decision to quit the job finally hit me when my boss’ wife left him even with all the money he had.

“After I left my job, I got my Master’s degree and with all that qualification I started selling phones in computer village and everyone thought something was wrong with me.

“Even my mother started praying special prayers for me but my father didn’t add that final voice that would have decided my fate. My break finally came after I got an invite to do two shows in London that made me twelve thousand pounds which I used to shoot two videos.

“When I told my mother what I did with the money she stopped talking to me for about three weeks. I had to move in with a friend because even my relatives didn’t want me around but everything finally changed when I went back to London for shows that fetched me really good money.”
