    A video of Stella Maris Okafor, the wife of late Nollywood actor John Okafor, better known as Mr. Ibu, has caused a stir on social media.

    TheNewsGuru reported that Mr. Ibu passed away on March 2, 2024. In a video that surfaced on social media, the late actor’s wife was seen wearing a short gown while walking in front of the camera.

    The video has attracted backlash, as many criticized her for putting up such a video after only a year after the actor’s death.

    Others, however, had no issue, noting that she has the right to move on with her life.

    As the adage goes, death is unavoidable. Regrettably, within this year’s space, some remarkable figures in the Nigerian entertainment industry, particularly Nollywood, have had their lives unexpectedly truncated under peculiar circumstances.

    These entertainers, who were hale and healthy, had died either suddenly or after battling a protracted illness, throwing the both Nollywood industry and their fans into mourning.

    In this piece, TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) presents a list of notable Nollywood stars who passed away in the outgoing year:

    Agbako

    Nollywood veteran actor, Pa Charles Olumo Sanyaolu, popularly known as Agbako died in October, at aged 101.

    The president of the Theatre Arts And Motion Pictures Association of Nigeria, TAMPAN  Bolaji Amusan, popularly known as Mr Latin announced the actor’s demise on Instagram on Thursday.

    The statement released on his page,reads , “Announces the passing of Pa Charles Olumo Sanyaolu, fondly known as AGBAKO. Details of the burial arrangements will be shared at a later time. Good night father, 25/02/1923 to 31/10/2024.”

    Born on February 19, 1923, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Agbako had a fascinating journey before finding his calling in acting. He initially worked as a mechanic and even dabbled in amateur boxing, displaying his multi-talented nature.

    In 1953, he took a decisive step towards acting, beginning his career with a drama group at the Apostolic Church in Mushin, Lagos State. This was a turning point, as he soon became a beloved figure in Nigerian theater and, later, in Yoruba cinema.

    Agbako’s impact on the film industry is legendary, particularly in the Yoruba-speaking regions, where his powerful performances captivated audiences. Over the years, he starred in many popular films that cemented his status as a household name, including ‘Taxi Driver,’ ‘Jagun,’ ‘Amin Orun,’ ‘Aiye,’ ‘Jayesinmi,’ ‘Soworo Ide,’ and ‘Igbo Dudu.’

    Bobo B

    In October, Nollywood actor, Ayobami Olabiyi, popularly known as Bobo B, passed away in Ibadan, Oyo State after battling deteriorating health.

    The governor of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) Bose Akinola, announced the sad news, disclosing that the deceased was supposed to be on a movie set in Oyo, but died shortly after he was admitted to the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Oyo State.

    Akintola statement reads: “I have a directive of the Oyo state TAMPAN governor, Her Excellency Yeye Bose Akinola to announce the death of our TAMPAN national general secretary, Chief Alhaji Musadshir Ayobami Olabiyi ‘Bobo B. May God give his family and the entire TAMPAN members globally the fortitude to bear the loss. Insha Allah, Amen.”

    Emmanuel France

    Veteran Nollywood actor, Emmanuel France died September, 2024. He was in his 80s.

    Nigerian Filmmaker, Femi Ogedengbe announced the veteran’ demise, noting that he had taken the late veteran to Tanzania in 2006, and had shot a number of films with him, including Cross My Sin, She is My Sister and The Director.

    Sharing late actor’s photo, Ogedengbe wrote: “Rest in peace to one of Nollywood legends. Uncle Emmanuel Frances, one of the actors i took to Tanzania in 2006, shot three movie with him; cross my sin, she is my sister and the director. RIP.”

    A Ghanaian by birth, It is yet unclear how he died.

    Yusuf Olorungbede

    Popular Nigerian actor and movie producer, Yusuf Olorungbede,died on Tuesday, August 27.

    Confirming his death, his younger colleague, Oladimeji Peter via his verified Facebook penned an emotional tribute to the deceased actor.

    Sharing his image, he wrote: “It sad to hear you are gone, as an actor you gave me courage, you are the first director that will invite me to a movie location and pay me, not just that alone, my feeding and personal accomodation was settled without stress, how will i write up my stories in this industry and slide your name EGBON?? Ko possible through you i met alot and i learnt so much from you. Good night boss man. Yusuf Olorungbebe.”

    Sharon Okpamen

    In August, Nollywood actress Sharon Okpamen, passed away days after birthing her second child.

    According to reports, the actress fell into a coma and never came back.

    Announcing her death, her colleague, Stanely Ontop via his verified Instagram noted it was a sad day for the Nollywood industry.

    He wrote: “Nollywood Actress and Producer Sharon Okpamen has unfortunately passed on.

    “It’s a sad day for Nollywood & the Edo entertainment industry. Sharon, who was a filmmaker, actress, entrepreneur& humanitarian, has left a significant void in the industry. May her soul rest in perfect peace, Amen @sharonokpamen. It can only get better.”

    Lara Olubo

    Popular Musician cum Nollywood actress, Lara Olubo died in June, 2024.

    The cause of her death was not immediately clear, but she was reported to have taken ill a few weeks to her death.

    Stella Ikwuegbu

    Popular Nollywood actress Stella Ikwuegbu died on Sunday, June 16th, 2024.

    According to Stanley Nwoko, a movie producer, the actress died after battling with leg cancer.

    Bading her farewell, he told her to rest well. He wrote; “Popular Nollywood actress/veteran Mrs stella ikwuegbu is dead.

    ”The veteran Actress left this world today after battling with Leg cancer. Rest well madam Stella.

    ”Nollywood not again. It’s well. Shalom!”.

    Sule Suebebe

    Veteran Nollywood actor, Dayo Adewunmi, popularly known as Sule Suebebe died at an undisclosed hospital in June, 2024.

    Popular Ibadan-based cleric, Pastor Ademola Amusan who had cared for the actor announced the news of his death saying, “It’s a pity, Baba Suebebe died at the hospital this morning. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”

    Junior Pope

    Popular Nollywood actor, Pope Odonwodo, also known as Junior Pope, died in April while attempting to cross the River Niger to shoot a new movie.

    Filmmaker, Sam Olatunji announced his passing, noting that the actor died with three others after their boat capsized.

    He wrote: “Junior Pope passes on. Sad day for Nollywood. Four actors including Jnr Pope fell into Anam River on their way to location and their bodies have been recovered.

    “What a sad day for Nollywood. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Multiple sources confirm this sad development to us.

    Mr Ibu

    Popular comic actor, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, died in March of this year after undergoing multiple surgeries and a leg amputation in 2023.

    The national president of Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) Emeka Rollas confirmed Ibu’s passing in an Instagram post saying,  “Sad Day for Actors Guild of Nigeria. Kate Henshaw lost her mother earlier today and Mr lbu suffered cardiac arrest according to his manager for 24 years Mr Don Single Nwuzor. I announce with deep sense of grief that Mr Ibu didn’t make it. May his soul rest in peace.”

    He was aged 63.

    Sisi Quadri

    Comic Yoruba actor,  Tolani Quadri Oyebamiji, popularly known as Sisi Quadri, died on March 1, at the general hospital in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, where he was receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.

    Quadri, known for his sarcasm in movies and skits, had his breakthrough in 2004 in the epic Yoruba movie, Seranko Seniyan. His meteoric rise came in 2020 when he released the movie Ebudola alongside an actress, Funmi Awelewa.

    His other movies include Ololade Mrs Money, Toko Taya, Big Brother IbadanLepa Gawu and recently Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre.

    Amaechi Muonagor

     Veteran Nollywood actor, Amaechi Muonagor died on March 24, 2024, at the age of 62 after battling with kidney disease for long time.

    Before his death which came when Nollywood was still mourning Mr Ibu and Sisi Quadri, he had appealed to Nigerians for financial help to support his treatment.

    Zulu Adigwe

     The veteran Nollywood star, Zulu Adigwe died on April 24, 2024. Born in Enugu, Zulu Adigwe became popular for his role as Mr B in the now rested sitcom Basi and Company.

    He has been featured in movies such as Issakaba, Top Secret, Last Ofalla, The Kingmaker, After Dawn, Divided Hearts and City of Kings.

    Olofa Ina

    Veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor, Deji Aderemi, better known as Olafa Ina, died on January 4, 2024, at age 73, after a long battle with cancer.
    Ethel Ekpe

    Nigerian Actress Ethel Ekpe, who played the role of Segi in Basi and Company, a sitcom that ran on Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) from 1986 to 1990, passed on February 7, 2024, after a prolonged illness due to cancer.

    Ekpe gained fame for her role in Basi and Company, a classic Nigerian sitcom where she showcased her comedic talent.

    Jimi Solanke

    The Nollywood actor cum poet and playwright better known for his works on Tales by Moonlight, died on February 5, 2024, after a prolonged illness related to old age.

    The wife of late Nollywood actor, John Okafor popularly known as Mr Ibu, Stella Maris, has taken to social media to remember him on his first posthumous birthday.

    The mother of three on Thursday shared photos of the late comic alongside their children, expressing how much the late veteran cherished birthdays when he was alive.

    She wrote, “Today would have been my late husband’s birthday. This marks the first one without him celebrating with us.

    “I can never forget how much he valued and enjoyed his birthdays. We miss him deeply. May his soul continue to rest in eternal peace, Amen.”

    The late comic actor, 62 passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024, after a prolonged illness which required financial assistance. In November 2023, his family confirmed that one of his legs had been amputated in a bid to save his life

    Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has come under heavy criticism  over her outfit to late Nollywood actor, Mr Ibu’s funeral.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the veteran actor was laid to rest amidst tears on Friday, June 28th.

    Mr. Ibu died on March 2, 2024, after a prolonged illness. In October 2023, he publicly revealed his struggle with diabetes, and in November, his leg was amputated following seven surgeries.

    The final funeral rites kicked off on Friday morning in the deceased’s hometown of Amuri, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

    The event drew a significant crowd, causing heavy traffic.

    Also present was Angela Okorie, actor Charles Inojie and Mr Ibu’s adopted daughter Jasmine.

    In a video she posted online, the actress cum musician was captured walking in to the burial ceremony with two body guards as she went to greet the late actor’s widow.

    Sharing a video from the ceremony,  Angela made it known that there will never be another Mr Ibu.

    However, her outfit to the ceremony stirred controversy as many noted how she was over dressed.

    Others, pointed out the hypocrisy at how she condemned Zubby Michael for his outfit to Junior Pope’s burial, yet did the same.

    Amarachi Okafor, the first daughter of late comic Nollywood actor, John Okafor better known as Mr Ibu on Friday said she never had a father- daughter relationship with the late actor.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the 62-year-old was laid to rest in his hometown, Amuri in the Nkanu West Local Government of Enugu State on Friday.

    Videos that emerged online show moments from the funeral ceremony in Enugu as friends and family members could not hold back tears as they bid farewell to the late thespian.

    Speaking after the late actor’s burial, Amarachi in an interview said that she did not get to meet her father in person until he was sick, adding that she grew up with her mother and never got to have a father and daughter relationship with him.

    She said, “My name is Amarachi Okafor. I am his first daughter of late Mr Okafor. We had a lot of moments together, but i did not get to meet him in person until he was sick and that was the first and last time we got to see each other.

    “I have been with my mom since. Meeting him for the first time on the sick bed was so frustrating. I am not happy we did not get to have a father and  daughter relationship before his death.”

    Comic Nollywood actor John Okafor better known as Mr Ibu has been buried in Enugu amid tears.

    The 62-year-old was laid to rest in his hometown, Amuri in the Nkanu West Local Government of State on Friday.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the remains of the late actor arrived in his hometown in the early hours of Friday, after the State hosted a night of tribute on Wednesday, June 26 in honor of the late actor.

    Videos that emerged online show moments from the ongoing funeral ceremony in Enugu as friends and family members could not hold back tears as they bid farewell to the late thespian.

    The venue was surrounded by security operatives, including the police and local vigilante groups who prevented authorised persons from gaining entrance into the ceremony.

    Mr. Ibu passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024, after a prolonged illness which required financial assistance. In November 2023, his family confirmed that one of his legs had been amputated in a bid to save his life.

    Notable veteran entertainers and colleagues of late actor John Okafor, better known as Mr Ibu, on Wednesday, June 26th, gathered to pay their respects to the late actor.

    Photos and videos that surfaced social media from the event show Mr. Ibu’s family, friends, and well-wishers, all dressed in white, gathered to honour his memory. Colleagues of the late actor, including Charles Awurum, Victor Osuagwu, and Steve Eboh were also in attendance.

    Earlier this month, members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) organised a candlelight procession to pay their last respect to deceased veteran Nollywood stars, which includes, Mr. Ibu, Amaechi Muonagor, and Zulu Adigwe.

    The National President of the AGN, Emeka Rollas, alongside veteran actors, Kenneth Okonkwo, Zack Orji, Sidney Idiala led the procession.

    The attendees took turns to pay heartfelt tribute to the late thespians for their contributions to the Nigerian film industry.

    In her remark, the FCT mayor of AGN, Mercy Salma, said the event was to show appreciation and honour for the life and times of the late actors.

    She said, “These are Nollywood veterans that put smiles in the faces of Nigerians during their lifetime, so we should celebrate their legacies and memories.

    “They have both the young and the old Nigerians, and even across Africa and beyond as their fans.”

    “So this procession is to show that we love them and appreciate their sacrifices and contributions to our industry and nation at large.”

     Nollywood stars across the country, on Monday night, gathered at the Unity Fountain in Abuja to pay their last respect to  late veterans, Mr Ibu, Amaechi Muonagor and Zulu Adigwe for their candlelight procession.

    TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) reports that the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) organised a candlelight procession to pay their last respect to deceased veteran Nollywood stars.

    The National President of the AGN, Emeka Rollas, alongside veteran actors, Kenneth Okonkwo, Zack Orji, Sidney Idiala led the procession.

    The attendees took turns to pay heartfelt tribute to the late thespians for their contributions to the Nigerian film industry.

    He said, “This is a season of sorrow for us at the AGN, our hearts are filled with grief over the loss of our three veteran members. But as the saying goes, when someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.

    “The Late John Okafor, Amaechi Monaugor and Zulu Adigwe lived life that exemplified brilliance and inspired emulation. They also lived a life that burned so that others’ paths were lit, and they made impact on the society through their profession.

    “Today we are here to honour them, not only by profoundly feeling and expressing our loss, but also to remember their amazing personalities.

    “They all played unique and special roles in all of our lives and the acting profession and they were loyal colleagues and special friends to many of us.

    “Today, we honour these men as we recall special moments ,they were living proof of how fine a person can be, caring hearts to their friends and colleagues, loving and devoted father to their children.

    “They gave their all in their acting careers as they worked with passion, integrity and energy and our hearts and prayers are with their families at this most difficult time.”

    The family and friends of the late veteran Nollywood actor, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, have set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the funeral costs for the actor.

    Recall, the family of the comic actor in the statement jointly signed by Ibu’s brother, Elder, Sunday Okafor, said the actor will be buried on June 28, 2024 like a hero in his hometown Amuri, in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

    Following the announcement of a five-day funeral for the actor, the central planning committee made up of his family and friends has appealed to public for donations to ensure a successful burial for him.

    A statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Central Planning Committee, Monday Diamond; Secretary, Central Planning Committee, Christy Ejiofor; and the President, Actors Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Rollas; stated that the ailment which led to the actor’s death consumed millions of naira, which was why they were asking for financial assistance.

    The statement read, “The Central Planning Committee of Late John Okafor (family and friends) solicit financial support from the general public to help them execute a successful burial for the late Nollywood legend.

    “Mr Ibu suffered an ailment which consumed tens of millions (of naira) through hospital bills for almost a year.

    “Mr Ibu, who passed away at the age of 62, left a lasting legacy in Nollywood. The planned events aim to honour his contributions to the industry and celebrate his life. The CPC urges the public to support this cause to give Mr Ibu the farewell he deserves,” the committee stated, while providing a Zenith Bank where the funds could be sent to.

    According to the funeral announcement by the late’s actor family, the burial arrangements will begin on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, with a novelty match between Nollywood and Rangers International.

    Also, a candle night procession will be held for the actor on Wednesday, June 26; while a wake at the actor’s compound in Eziokwe Amurri in Enugu State will follow on Thursday, June 27.

    The statement added, “On Friday, June 28, 2024, his body leaves Eastern Nigeria Medical Center to his hometown in Amurri, Nkanu West LGA around 10 am for the burial ceremony. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 30, followed by a thanksgiving service.”

    The Central Planning Committee further extended gratitude to those who had already contributed, especially Jeremiah Fufeyin, the head prophet of Christ Mercyland Deliverance Ministry in Effurun, Delta state.

    The Nigerian movie industry has been hit with spate of deaths of prominent and budding actors this year.

    Veteran Yoruba actor, Deji Aderemi, popularly known as Olofa Ina, died on Thursday, January 4. He died at the age of 73.

    According to reports, the thespian died of cancer in Lagos State.

    Veteran actress, Ethel Ekpe, who adorned the Nigerian entertainment screen for years, died on Wednesday, February 7, in Lagos State.

    Ekpe is well known for playing the role of ‘Segi’ on the Nigerian Television Authority sitcom, ‘Basi and Company’. She died after a long battle with cancer.

    Yoruba Nollywood actor, Tolani Quadri Oyebamiji, popularly known as Sisi Quadri died on March 1, at the age of 44.

    A day after Sisi Quadri’s demise, the news of the passing of comic actor, John Okafor, popular as Mr Ibu broke out.

    The actor died at the age of 62.

    Three weeks after losing one of its comic actors, the Nigerian movie industry lost yet another veteran actor, Amaechi Muonagor, to the cold hands of death.

    Muonagor died on Sunday, March 24, after battling kidney disease for a long time.

    This came a few days after a viral video in which he solicited financial assistance from Nigerians to enable him to travel abroad for a kidney transplant.

    Nollywood actress, Adejumoke Oreoluwa Aderounmu, popularly known for her role as ‘Esther’ in popular TV series, Jenifa’s Diary, died on Sunday, March 7.

    Days after the death of Adejumoke, the news of the passing of Junior Pope Odonwodo popularly called, Jnr Pope, broke out.

    The actor died on Wednesday, March 10, while filming in Asaba, Delta.
    Again, on Tuesday, Veteran Nollywood actor and singer, Zulu Adigwe, died.

    Adigwe earned fame for his paternal roles in Nollywood movies such as Mr. B in the sitcom, ‘Basi and Company,’ and featured in the 2019 blockbuster ‘Living in Bondage’ and ‘Breaking Free’.

    Fans, on Wednesday , took to the social media platform, X, formerly Twitter, to raise their concerns.

    “This calls for concern. We lost so much this year, great men and women that had put smiles in our faces over the years.

    I think the government should start with Health Insurance for them.”
