Police to grill Emir Sanusi II over Sallah procession violence in Kano

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has officially invited the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, for questioning over the violence that erupted during the recent Eid-el-Fitr procession in Kano, which resulted in the death of a local vigilante member.

TheNewsGuru reports that the invitation follows a tragic incident that occurred on Eid Day when the Emir’s entourage moved from the Eid prayer ground to the palace in a traditional procession. The violence, which disrupted an otherwise peaceful celebration, led to the death of vigilante member Surajo Rabiu and left one other person injured.

An official letter, dated April 4, 2025, and signed by Commissioner of Police CP Olajide Rufus Ibitoye, on behalf of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Department (FID), was sent to the Emir.

The letter reads “I have the directives of the Inspector General of Police, through the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID), to invite you for an investigative meeting with regards to an incident that occurred during the Sallah celebration within your domain.”

The Emir has been asked to appear before the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja, opposite the Police Headquarters, Area 11, at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

This development comes amid heightened tensions in Kano State following the earlier decision by the State Police Command to ban the annual Durbar festival due to security concerns. The ban, announced days before the Eid-el-Fitr celebration, was intended to prevent any possible breakdown of law and order during the festive period.

However, despite the suspension of the Durbar, a motorcade procession of Emir Sanusi II still took place on the third day of the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations

  • What I will do to you, if your husbands slap you and you did not slap back  – Emir Sanusi to his daughters

What I will do to you, if your husbands slap you and you did not slap back  – Emir Sanusi to his daughters

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has revealed that he urges his daughters to return any slap they receive from their husbands, willing them to stand up to domestic violence.

Sanusi, while speaking at the National Dialogue Conference on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention from an Islamic perspective, revealed that domestic violence cases account for 45 percent of cases in nine Shari’a Courts in Kano over the past five years.

The conference, themed ‘Islamic teachings and community collaboration for ending Gender-Based Violence,’ was organized by the Centre for Islamic Civilisation and Interfaith Dialogue (CICID), Bayero University Kano (BUK), in collaboration with the Development Research and Projects Centre (DRPC) and supported by the Ford Foundation.

The emir said, “You can take that verse and say that as a husband, I’ve been given this permission to beat my wife light. And nobody will deny that, nobody will say it is haram if you comply with all the rules. But if you live in a society in which those rules are never applied, nobody who is angry remembers to look for a chewing stick or a handkerchief.

“They just slap these women and punch them and kick them and beat them. I just wrote a doctorate thesis on family law, and I did research on nine courts, nine Shari’a courts in Kano. 41% of the cases over a five-year period had to do with maintenance. 26 per cent had to do with harm. And out of those, 45 per cent were cases of wife beating, domestic violence. And when we go to the content analysis, not one case of wife beating was light beating.

“We had women whose limbs were broken. We had women whose teeth were knocked out. We had women who were victims of constant beating with sticks. We had women where the husband and his other wives beat one of the wives. We’ve had cases of Cardis having to send her sons to trial for criminal assault because of the nature of the beating against their wives. This is the common beating that happens.

“…Beating your wife or beating your daughter or beating a woman is prohibited. It is a crime. Let’s not even talk about handkerchief or chewing stick. It is just haram. It is prohibited. Allah says, All harm must be removed. And beating, gender-based violence is harm. And it must be removed.

“It just does not make sense. Now I said it before, and I know I’ve been attacked for it, and I’ll continue saying it. When my daughters are getting married, I say to them, if your husband slaps you, and you come home and tell me my husband slapped me, without slapping him back first, I will slap you myself because I did not send my daughter to marry somebody so he can slap her. If you do not like her, send her back to me. But don’t beat her.

“And we must teach our daughters not to take it. And also teach our sons that it is not allowed to happen. It is not acceptable. It cannot happen. We have to bring up our children to understand that violence against the body of another human being, whether it’s your brother, or your sister, or your son, or your daughter, or your wife, that violence against persons violates the basic dignity of a human being.”

  • How Buhari fuelled inflation, weakened value of Naira – Sanusi

How Buhari fuelled inflation, weakened value of Naira – Sanusi

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Muhammad Sanusi II has opened up on how former President Muhammadu Buhari triggered inflationary pressure in Nigeria and weakened the value of the Naira.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Sanusi to have said CBN’s lending to the federal government under the administration of former President Buhari through Ways and Means triggered inflationary pressure and weakened the value of the Naira.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at a two-day Premier Capital Markets Day Event organised by MTN, the former CBN Governor said Buhari’s 8 years saw the rapid expansion of the apex bank’s balance sheet through ways and means.

The 14th Emir of Kano said the CBN has, however, embarked on aggressive monetary tightening through various liquidity control instruments, including open market operations, Open Buy Back (OBB) and high T-bills rates, which Sanusi said is an indication that the bank was sticking to its core mandate of financial systems stability and inflation control.

“I am optimistic, especially in the short term. We’ve had eight years of rapid expansion of the central bank’s balance sheet through ways and means. And that has fueled inflation and weakened the currency. And that is the fact.

“If you look at OMO Bills and OBB rates in the last few weeks, I can see that the central bank has started a process of aggressive tightening. OBB rates are beginning to approach what they should be. And I think that’s what the market needs to look at; that the central bank is taking this role of tightening money and fighting inflation as a primary focus.

“For the short term, I don’t think we have a problem. I think the central bank is doing the right thing – tightening money, clearing the backlog, trying to fund the market, and I think we will have stability,” Sanusi II said.

TNG reports Ways and Means is a way in which the federal government raises funds by borrowing from the CBN.  The CBN’s loan to the federal government hit N22.7 trillion, an amount the CBN said had been securitised not to dampen its balance sheet.

Speaking earlier at the event, CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, represented by Director in charge of Research Department, Dr Omolara Duke, said the bank would return to its primary role of price stability.

Cardoso said “The Ways and Means will no longer be more than five percent, going forward. The period for the government to access Ways and Means is over” while adding that the central bank was looking at how to drive down the cost of remittances to increase the inflow and move them away from the informal sector into the formal.

NBA conference: Deposed Emir Sanusi takes sides with El-Rufai

The deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II has taken sides with Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai for the withdrawal of the Governor’s invitation to take part in the 2020 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the deposed Kano Emir, who departed Lagos State for Kaduna State on Sunday morning, on a visit to northern Nigeria first time after his dethronement in March, felt Governor El-Rufai was not accorded the right to fair hearing, and he hoped the matter does not tear the NBA apart.

Sanusi stressed that the invitation granted Governor El-Rufai would have actually given the NBA a rare opportunity to grill the Kaduna State Governor. He argued that El-Rufai always has opinions, and that people will either like him for it or hate him for it.

“You know if you have an opinion, people will either agree with you or disagree with you but a man ‎who has an opinion that can be agreed with or disagreed with is always better than a man who has no opinion at all.

“Nasir always has opinions. He knows what his positions are on things. He says that position very clearly. People will like it, some people will not like it and that is what some people call controversial and being controversial is actually having an opinion. To be honest I do not want to join issues because we have already heard the views of Nigerians and the response.

“Everybody has a right to a fair hearing, and most importantly for me, if you feel that the Governor of Kaduna State is not doing right you should invite him to your covers and ask him to explain what he is doing. Tell him what you think is doing wrong and you will learn something from him and he will learn something from you.

“‎That is the best way to handle issues like this. But again, I have seen the response from different branches of NBA and I hope this matter will not be turned to ethnicity and religious matter. It should be a matter of principle,” Sanusi said.
