Seun Kuti tackles Nigerians jubilating over Buhari’s death

Seun Kuti, one of the sons of legendary Nigerian musician and activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has slammed Nigerians rejoicing over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023 and also served as Military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985, died in London on Sunday, at the age of 82, after a prolonged illness.

Reacting, Kuti via his verified Instagram page on Tuesday, stated that, even though the late Nigerian leader dealt with his family,  his death is not justice, and should not be a victory for Nigerians.

The singer who expressed deep pain over the harm allegedly caused by late president to his family, noted that, he did not celebrate his death.

He also highlighted the amount of taxpayers’ money used to fund Buhari’s overseas medical treatment until his death.

In his words: “That an old man has died in old age after using our blood to secure the financial future of his generations is not justice. Nobody watching this live video can say that their family suffered in the hands of Buhari the way my family did.”

“Now, some of you will come online celebrating like his death is a victory for us. Did you charge him in court for his crime? Why do you think an old man dying of old age is justice?” he asked.

“Over £3,000 was spent every month for his treatment in the UK while Nigerians are dying in public hospitals. You think that’s justice?.

“Buhari killed my friends, Buhari killed better men than me, men that should still be alive today. He killed my people. He killed the future of many Nigerians.”

Buhari’s life valuable lesson for future leaders – CISLAC

Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has mourned the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing his life as a valuable lesson for future leaders in the country.

The Executive Director of CISLAC, Auwal Rafsanjani, who made the remark in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, said that the late former president’s legacy was one marked by discipline in public engagement.

Rafsanjani, who is also the Head of Transparency International Nigeria, said that Buhari would particularly be remembered for his early leadership as a military head of state during which he launched War Against Indiscipline (WAI).

He said that the WAI initiative fostered a sense of civic responsibility, discipline and patriotism among citizens.

“During that time, people began to observe greater order, coming to work on time, queuing properly at public places and displaying the national flag in offices. National symbols were respected and a stronger sense of civic duty was instilled,” he recalled.

Rafsanjani also noted that Buhari’s military administration attracted criticisms over human rights concerns, saying that this remained a point of reflection, even as he (Buhari) returned to power in a democratic capacity years later.

“Buhari was elected as a civilian president in 2015 after multiple attempts, enjoying broad support both domestically and internationally.

“This raised high hopes that his presidency would address pressing issues such as insecurity, corruption and unemployment,” he said.

While acknowledging the former president’s sincere intentions and international credibility, Rafsanjani pointed to internal political challenges which, he said, might have constrained his administration’s effectiveness.

“He came into office with noble goals and enjoyed public trust in the beginning. However, governance is complex, and political dynamics—particularly the influence of certain figures within his administration—posed significant challenges.

“This offers an important lesson: Leadership must go beyond vision and must include effective execution, transparency and accountability,”

Rafsanjani also acknowledged Buhari’s wide popularity and how his leadership helped shape national discourse around anti-corruption, security and civic discipline.

He said that civil society organisations, including CISLAC, engaged actively with his administration on governance, institutional reform and accountability.

The executive director urged current and future Nigerian leaders to place national interest above everything else and strive for legacies that would command respect both within and outside the country.

While expressing deep sympathy over the death of the former president, he prayed Allah to grant him eternal rest.

NLC reacts as FG releases Buhari’s funeral arrangements

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says Late President Muhammadu Buhari was a patriotic servant leader who stood with the people and put the country first, no matter the cost.

Comrade Joe Ajaero, NLC President stated this in a condolence message he personally signed and made available to newsmen on Monday in Abuja.

“For us in the unions, Buhari came fighting the unions and mass-retrenching workers leading to indescribable suffering during his tenure as a military head of state.

“However, as a civilian president, Buhari saw to it, that no worker was laid off (not  even during the Covid-19 pandemic).

“He repeatedly gave facilities to state governments to clear the backlogs of salaries and pensions as well as to enable them  regularly pay salaries (although some governors betrayed this trust),” Ajaero said.

The labour leader added: “Although Buhari increased the pump-price of petroleum products, he stoutly refused to sell off the refineries or  devalued the Naira.

“Buhari  consistently identified with worker-issues/values including resisting pressure to adopt fundamentalist market policies as part of the process of protecting workers and ordinary people.

“In the late President, therefore, we have lost a leader who corrected his mistakes against workers, during his second coming. He stood with the people and country, a leader who truly put the country first no matter the cost”.

Ajaero said  NLC was deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Buhari, and the members’ hearts were with the immediate family, friends and associates in their trying moments, especially his wife, Hajiya Aisha.

“He sought persons of character, goodwill, and vigour to serve the country while he was president.

“That informed his hiring of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited to handle the surveillance of critical oil and gas facilities in 2022, when the country’s oil and gas infrastructure were bleeding.

“Today, the story is different as the country is progressing steadily towards attaining a peak in oil production. Nigerians will miss his contributions to the unity and peace of the country,” he said.
