Police hunt Lagos party organizer as man murders friend over lover

The Lagos State Police Command has started a probe into the killing of two friends at a party in the Mafoluku area of Oshodi, Lagos State.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said the police were searching for the party organizer to know the circumstances that led to the death of the friends.

According to reports, Segun Afuye went to a naming ceremony with his friend, Sodiq Elewure, on Wednesday.

Afuye was said to have learnt that Elewure was allegedly having an affair with his girlfriend, Kafayat.

A squabble reportedly ensued between the two friends, as Afuye allegedly stabbed Elewure with a broken bottle in the neck.

The victim died on the spot.

A mob was said to have attacked Afuye and beaten him to a pulp.

A five-second video posted on a social media platform, Instablog9ja, revealed the moments Afuye was lynched by the mob.

A voice could be heard accusing him of hooliganism.

It is everybody you beat on the street, have you seen yourself? You will be jailed,” the male speaker stated.

The police spokesperson, Adejobi, said policemen attempted to save Afuye, adding that he died in a hospital.

He said, “There was a party yesterday (Wednesday) around the Mafoluku area of Oshodi and the two friends were there. One Segun Afuye stabbed his friend to death and immediately an angry mob lynched him.

“He was critically injured, rescued by the police from the place, but he gave up the ghost in the hospital. Preliminary investigation shows that they were fighting on the issue of girlfriend and that was what led to the hot argument before Afuye stabbed his friend.

“The two of them are dead, but the matter is under investigation. We are looking for the person who arranged the party to know if that was what led to their death or there was more to the story, to curtail any further ugly occurrence.”

Adejobi said the case had been moved to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.

Hearing in the case of kidnap and murder of late Obi Akaeze Ofulue III of Ubulu-Uku in Aniocha South Local Government of Delta State on Tuesday was stalled by the absence of the defence counsel.

This is coming as the trial judge, Justice M.O. Omovie of the High Court, Ibusa, Delta State, inexplicably prevented journalists from covering the kidnap and murder case in his court.

In the suit A/20C/2017 and A/198/2017 between the State versus Jamilo Ahmed and three others, Justice Omovie had to adjourn to April 28, 2021 for the next hearing due to the failure of the defence counsel to appear for the accused persons.

Four suspects are standing trial for the murder of the late monarch who was kidnapped and then murdered in 2016.

The suspects were apprehended by security operatives in various parts of the country with the recovery of the monarch’s stolen phone leading to the arrest of the suspects.
Before the commencement of the proceedings, Justice Omoke ordered journalists to leave the court.

The court Registrar came to inform journalists that their presence in the court was deemed detrimental y the presiding judge and should they leave or get permit from the Chief Judge of the State before they can be allowed to cover the proceedings.

The dozens of journalists who were in the court to cover the hearing in the kidnap and murder case of late Obi Akaeze Ofulue III of Ubulu-Uku, were bewildered at the judge’s decision to prevent them from covering the proceedings for the day.

Lawyers and members of the public at the court premises were equally shocked at the decision of Justice Omovie.

Those who spoke on account of anonymity expressed their disbelief that a judge of the High Court could descend so low as to give such an order.

They noted that journalists are very important in dissemination of information to the general public and court proceedings are not left out.

They urged the Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Marshall Umukoro, to call Justice Omovie to order, noting that his action amounted to impeding the dispensation of justice.
According to them, the case is high profile one involving the kidnap and murder of a prominent traditional ruler.

“The case has been going on for four years and I wonder the judge should be uncomfortable with the presence of media practitioners”, one of the journalists said.

Speaking to newsmen at the court premises, Chief Ojeigwu of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom, Dr. Samuel Nwabuoke lamented the gruesome murder of the late monarch, adding that the incident still torments the entire community till date.

He expressed the belief that justice would be served at the end.

Speaking in the same vein, the President-General of Ubulu-Uku Development Council, Sir Jonathan Monye, noted that even though the trial has been lingering since 2016, the people of Ubulu-Uku will not relent in he quest for justice, noting that since the abduction and killing of the royal, the town had nit know peace.

According to Monye who also a lawyer, murderous cattle herders have continued to terrorise the community kidnapping, raping women, destroying farmlands and killing farmers. He called for increased security presence in the community.

Alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, aka Evans, and others will today continue with trials over murder and kidnap charges before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of Lagos High Court, in Ikeja.

At the last hearing, Inspector Idowu Haruna, a member of the Intelligence Response Team of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), had at the last hearing told the court that he obtained the confessional statements of the alleged kidnap kingpin under a conducive atmosphere.

  • No apology after fifteen million murders, By Owei Lakemfa

KING Philippe of Belgium descends from his heavenly throne this week to sign a letter to President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo of the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, acknowledging for the first time in 113 years, Belgium’s genocide in that country. Philippe danced round the subject of his country’s massacre of over 15 million Congolese men and women, children and adults, the old and the young. He mentioned “deepest regrets” for the “suffering and humiliation” Belgium inflicted on the African people. But he never rendered an apology. That would be too much for a Belgian monarch, one of whose predecessors, King Leopold II, led Belgians to inflict unconscionable pain on humanity. Rather, he talked glibly about the need “to further strengthen our ties and develop an even more fruitful friendship”, adding “we must be able to talk about our long common history in all truth and serenity”.

It was to mark this Tuesday, the 60th anniversary of the DRC’s independence, one which lasted three months before the murderous Belgians and their British and American first cousins unleashed another round of atrocities, murdering more Congolese for another four decades. Belgium’s genocide in the DRC has been the bloodiest, most atrocious, most inhumane and most outrageous in human history.

While the Holocaust in which some six million Jews were exterminated by the Germans in one of the most insane acts ever perpetuated by human beings is still being talked about, documented and made into films with memorials, there is silence in the Congo case which had three times more casualties. The difference is that those killed in the Holocaust were Whites while the victims in the Congo were Blacks. That is why the beneficiaries of the African tragedy who, until today, swim in the riches stolen by King Leopold II cannot apologise not to talk about returning part of the stolen wealth. Leopold II from his business of killing so many human beings and amputating hands and limbs, made a personal profit of some 220 million francs (or $1.1 billion in today’s dollars) from a country he never set foot.

In his insulting letter, King Philippe, a cousin of the butcher Leopold II wrote: “Our history is made of common achievements but has also experienced painful episodes. During the period of the Congo Free State, acts of violence and cruelty were committed, which still weigh on our collective memory.” What are the “common achievements” between the robbery squads from the Belgian monarchy and governments, and the Congolese people?

Leopold II wiped out villages that did not meet his rubber quota demands, children as young as five years were amputated if they were found not to be hard working; it was death penalty for adults who did not meet quota allocations. For education, the Belgians allowed only orphans to be taught in Catholic schools, to be soldiers or workers for the King. His criminal enterprise also brought people from China, Nigeria, the Caribbean, Zanzibar and other African countries to slave in the DRC.

Although they were all colonialists carrying out forced labour, theft, exploitation of the African peoples and massacre of the colonised people, and despite being first cousin of Britain’s Queen Victoria, the European establishment thought Leopold’s atrocities were too extreme and moved against him by establishing an International Commission which confirmed the genocide. But rather than allow the Congolese to be free, the country was handed over to the Belgian government whose further 52-year rule was better only by degrees.

If the King cannot apologise, what about the Belgian government? In 2019 during a visit to Belgium, a team of United Nations Human Rights experts established “clear evidence that racial discrimination is endemic in institutions in Belgium”. So, will such a system apologise to the African people?

Yes, there have been Black Lives Matter protests in Belgium during which some made critical remarks against Leopold II, but there are many in the country’s leadership who see nothing wrong in his criminalities. Just in June, Prince Laurent, King Philippe’s brother, rose to the defence of Leopold II with the unintelligent talk: “He never went to [DR Congo] himself. I do not see how he could have made people there suffer.” He, however, said whenever he met African heads of state he always apologised “for the actions Europeans have done to Africans in general”. That is his way of saying Belgians were not the only criminals who looted Africa blind. A possible difference is that while other Europeans looted Africa as governments or traders and colonised it, Leopold II saw the DRC as his personal estate over which he had proprietorial control over its people, resources and lands like a man owns a farm and its animals. Yes, to him, Africans were not human beings, they were at best animals who were not even entitled to animal rights. Yet the size of the DRC is 2.345 million kilometres while the entire Belgium is 30,689 kilometres, which means the DRC is 7,581 percent larger.

Despite the documentation of his unspeakable Hitlerite actions, Leopold believed he was a missionary. He was quoted as saying: “I undertook the work of the Congo in the interest of civilisation and for the good of Belgium.”

The DRC was led to independence by a principled trade unionist, Patrice Lumumba, a former postal worker. Within weeks of the June, 1960 independence, the Belgians sent troops to strengthen a revolt in the Katanga region. As Prime Minister, Lumumba asked for United Nations troops, but under the influence of Belgium, Britain and United States whose President Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered Lumumba’s assassination, the UN troops put Lumumba under house arrest. He escaped from the UN troops but was captured in flight.

Taken to the rebel enclave of Katanga where he and two other senior officials were tied to trees in the forest and executed under the command of the Belgian troops. The corpses were then butchered and soaked in acid. One of the Belgian officers, Gerard Soete, took Lumumba’s teeth as trophy which until today, is kept in his house in Belgium.

The DRC, Africa’s richest country in terms of natural resources, remains unstable until today with local and international gangsters roaming the country and looting its resources.

  • 45-year-old woman raped, murdered in Imo

45-year-old woman raped, murdered in Imo

The Imo State Government has vowed to fish out suspected ritualists who allegedly killed a 45-year-old woman, Mrs. Susanna Iwuoha, after raping her.

Iwuoha, a mother of four from Alaocha, Umuchiaku, in the Lowa-Okata Autonomous community, Ihitte Uboma LGA, was found dead with her face dug into a local stream days after she left home to get cassava from her farmland.

The woman, whose undergarments were allegedly carted away by her attackers, was discovered by a community search party after her children raised the alarm over her disappearance since June 3.

A man identified as Bernard Ekeka, who is believed to have seen the yet unidentified attackers, was also killed.

The woman’s alleged rape and murder, it was gathered, created panic in the community especially because two other women identified as
Mrs Chidinma Nwokorie and Mrs Evelyn Duru have allegedly fallen victims to rapists in recent times.

Locals told our correspondent they believed the perpetrators were familiar with the terrain and most likely enemies within.

Iwuoha’s 15-year-old daughter, Ugochi, said they had earlier gone to the farm together for weeding and returned home before her mother decided to go back later that day to harvest some crops.

During a visit to the community on Sunday, Commissioner for Special Projects, Simon Ebegbulem appealed to residents to avail the police any useful information to aid the arrest of the perpetrators.

Ebegbulem, who hails from the area, was accompanied on a condolence visit to the deceased’s aged mother, Madam Angela Iwuoha, her children and community leaders by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Etiti Division, Charles Njoku, a Superintendent of Police (SP).

He assured the people that the administration of Governor Hope Uzodinma will do everything within its power to ensure justice prevailed.

“No stone will be left unturned to ensure that the perpetrators of these henious crimes are brought to justice. The administration of Governor Hope Uzodinma, as you all know, is a listening and compassionate one.

“The governor has within the short time in office made a lot of inroad in the areas of security and infrastructural development. The administration has zero tolerance for any form of criminality, and in no time, the perpetrators will be fished out and made answerable to the law,” he said.

The DPO urged the residents to identify the culprits, noting that those who committed the crimes were no strangers to the locals.

“The issue is that it is a community affair. The community knows those people, because, they are living with them. They should come to the police to give us useful information. They will be protected.

“Traditional rulers, opinion leaders, vigilante groups, should assist us here. Security is not a one-man affair. This is the third case within this area,” said the DPO.
