In Christiana, a town in North West province of South Africa, a 19-year-old suspect was on Friday, 5 June 2020 apprehended for allegedly stabbing his stepfather to death.

He was declared dead on the scene by Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS).

Initial investigations into the matter revealed that the suspect and his stepfather were involved in an argument, which led to the fatal stabbing of the latter.

In another unrelated incident in Ventersdorp, a town in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, North West Province, South Africa, also on Friday, 5 June 2020, police were summoned to a house in Tshing Location in the early hours of the morning.

Ebonyi community sends SoS to IGP over alleged murder, rape

The people of Edda community in Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi, has urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr Mohammed Adamu to come to their rescue over alleged murder cases, torture and rape of their people.

The call was made through a Save Our Souls (SOS) letter by Edda Intervention and Rescue Initiative, a group pressing for the rights of people of Edda clan, and submitted to the IGP in Abuja.

Coordinator of the group, Chief Abia Onyeike, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Abuja that, in the letter dated May 20, about 22 cases of murder, torture, assault, rape and other crimes were allegedly visited on the people.

Onyeike, a former Commissioner for Information in Ebonyi, complained in the letter that the incidents had been happening since 2007 with some of them reported to the police but no action taken.

He gave an instance with a development that occurred in Owutu Edda between May 2 and May 6 when three incidents of murder by alleged cult groups were linked to politicians.

The former commissioner noted that another incident occurred on May 10, at Ogwuma Edda where 20-year-old Oji Sunday recounted how he was almost buried alive.

Onyeike also recalled how another young man of 19, Chidi Oji was also gunned down and his body taken away by the alleged killers on March 27, at Nguzu, Edda.

“Our complaint is about the death of four persons between March 27 and May 6, and not a single arrest has been made.

“Even when arrests are made, the accused persons who walk free are left out while people unconnected with the incident are apprehended and later released to send the impression that something was done.

“Gov. Dave Umahi had addressed the state and called on the police and the DSS to do their work at the last killings, not a single person has been arrested.

“Almost all these incidents have been linked to members of a group called ‘Morekanbedone’ which is said to be a terror group serving the interest of a particular politician in Edda.

“And some of the incidents not linked to them are still politically motivated and we want answers to all these if there is still law and order in Nigeria, Ebonyi and Edda,” Onyeike said.

According to him, the people now live in fear and intimidation and therefore appeals with the IGP for rescue.

“We have written the IGP, the DG of the Department of State Security (DSS), the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission.

“We have also written to the Chief of Army Staff because we can’t bear the terror any more, otherwise we will all be dead.

“Edda cries to these agencies to know if their rights have been subsumed under those of the ‘Morkanbedone’ members rights to kill and not be punished.

“As helpless people who had already ceded their rights to self-protect to the state, we seek immediate and sufficient protection of the state before all of us are murdered and gone.

“We want the allegations proven and justice served because the silence of the past is what made their instrumentality of carnage so potent. There should be a stop now,” he added.

When contacted, Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Frank Mbah, told NAN that he was not aware of the letter.

He assured to get back to NAN when the information on the development got to his table.

  • Via Facebook, three brothers kidnap, murder 55-Yr-old widow in Abuja

Via Facebook, three brothers kidnap, murder 55-Yr-old widow in Abuja

Operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Unit have arrested three brothers who killed a mother of five in Abuja and fled to their hometown in Isiekenesi, Ideato Local Government Area of Imo State.

This was disclosed by the Force Public Relations Office, Deputy Commissioner of Police Frank Mba.

According to Mba, the mother of five, Janet Nnenna Ogbonnaya, had gone to visit one of the brothers with whom she was friend on Facebook, Johnson Emmanuel, in Abuja when she was murdered and her body dumped in a septic tank.

Johnson, 38, conspired with his brother, Gideon Emmanuel, 31; and Success Emmanuel, 27, in the kidnap and gruesome murder of Ogbonnaya on May 14, 2020.

The suspects, born by same parents, were arrested by the Police in their hometown where they had taken refuge after committing the crime in Abuja in order to evade police arrest.

Mba said the unravelling of the murder started with a complaint by Ogbonnaya’s son, Chinedu, who alleged that his 55-year-old mother, from Ozuitem in Bende LGA of Abia State, had been kidnapped and a N5 million ransom demanded before she could be released.

He said a comprehensive and painstaking investigation by the police operatives resulted in the arrest of the Emmanuel brother, who, in the course of interrogation, revealed that the victim had long been murdered and buried.

Further findings revealed that the victim, a widow, who had been a Facebook friend of the principal suspect, Johnson, was lured from her home in Gwagwalada to visit the suspect.

The suspect thereafter took advantage of the visit, served her yoghurt laced with drugs and subsequently had her murdered.

The suspect having killed the victim and buried her remains in a septic tank, went ahead to reach out to the family of the victim using her phone and demanded N5 million ransom as pre-condition for her release.

The suspects on Thursday led a team of investigators alongside pathologists to a residence at Wumba District, Lokogoma, Abuja, where the victim’s decomposing body was exhumed from a septic tank.

The exhumed body has been taken to the University Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, Abuja for forensic examination.

A Toyota Highlander Jeep belonging to the deceased has also been recovered by Police operatives at a mechanic workshop in Apo, where it had been repainted into a different colour, vehicle documents fraudulently changed and ownership of the stolen vehicle criminally transferred to one of the masterminds of the crime, Johnson.

Investigations also revealed that the house where the deceased was killed and buried originally belonged to one of the suspects, but was hurriedly sold-off to a third party apparently to obliterate evidence.

Mba said the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, while commending the operatives for a job well done, reassured that perpetrators of any form of crime in the country will not go undetected and unpunished.

Adamu enjoined Nigerians to be more security conscious and report suspicious activities within their neighbourhood to the nearest police station.

Senate wades into rape, killing of UNIBEN student

The Nigerian Senate has condemned the rape and killing of Miss Vera Omozuwa, a first-year undergraduate student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), and made a case for a national campaign against rape and violation of the girl child.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Senate also called for the immediate arrest of the person(s) involved in the rape and murder of Miss Omozuwa, mandating security agencies to employ strategies to check the rising cases of rape in the country.

The call followed a motion by Senator Sandy Onor, who citing Orders 42 and 52 moved that the Senate do condemn the rising incidences of rape across the country, noting that a 16-year-old girl was equally recently killed in Lagos State.

Senator Biodun Olujimi, in her contribution, while seconding the motion, asked that the authorities take proactive measures so the girl child is protected. The Senator stressed that anything that injures the girl child injures the nation.

Senator Akon Etim Eyakenyi, contributing to the motion, said the particular issue of rape has been raised and spoken against severally in the Senate.

“It is not just arresting the culprits and taken to the police station, the court and then sentenced to a few years of jail time that is enough. A severe penalty should be given to such culprits,” Senator Eyakenyi said.

Also, Senator Betty Apiafi joined in condemning the violation, she said has become a daily occurrence in the society. She added the rape incidence of a 12-year-old girl in Jigawa State to the motion and called for not just stiffer penalty but stronger advocacy against rape.

Meanwhile, Senator Uche Ekwunife commended the mover of the motion. She said the issue of young girls being raped is no longer news, but what is news is that it is on the increase.

Following deliberations on the motion, the Senate condemned the killing of the girls, called for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators, and observed a minute silence in honour of the two girls and others who have fallen victims of rape.

TNG reports the Senate also urged security agencies to ensure the enforcement of the child rights act, which includes forceful marriage, while also urging State’s Houses of Assembly to amend the code to make rape punishable.

A farmer in Ogun State, Mr. Kolese Womiloju, 45, and his son, Taiwo Womiloju, 25, have been arrested by police for hacking a herder Abubakar Sidi Usman, 32, to death.

Father and son were said to have first attacked the herdsman with a ring laced with charm on April 22 which immobilised him and while he remained unconscious, and then inflicted machete cuts on him, killing him.

The suspects dragged the remains of the herdsman to an abandoned well near the scene of attack and dumped them there.
