  • Horror: 15-year-old girl faces trial after killing 3-year-old half-brother, stabbing him 28 times

A 15-year-old girl on Monday went on trial in Germany for killing her 3-year-old half-brother, with prosecutors saying she stabbed him 28 times in November with a knife as he was sleeping.

The case had horrified people across Germany in 2019. A key question in the trial is why the girl acted as she did.

“My client wants to know this too and thus cooperated with the psychiatric expert,’’ defence lawyer Helmut Woehler told dpa on Monday.

The court proceedings are taking place behind closed doors because she is a minor.

The killing allegedly took place in the family flat in the north-western town of Detmold, the parents were not home at the time.

Relatives found the body of the boy and notified the police, the girl was found the next day some 9 km away, in the town of Lemgo.

She did not resist arrest and was calm at the time, according to prosecutors. She is believed to have spent the night outdoors and walked to the neighbouring town on dirt roads.

The girl identified herself as the perpetrator after her arrest but said she was suffering from memory loss.

The psychiatric expert is among the about 20 witnesses expected to testify at the trial.

He has been asked to comment on the defendant’s developmental stage and her criminal responsibility.

She faces up to 10 years in jail if she is found guilty of murder.

The girl continues to be rather introverted, but has become used to life in jail and is attending school there, Woehler said.

The court has scheduled three further trial dates this month.

  • Four men executed for gang rape, murder

Four men executed for gang rape, murder

Four men were executed on Friday for the brutal gang rape and murder of a young woman in the Indian capital in 2012.

The men were hanged to death in Delhi’s Tihar Jail, a jail official confirmed.

A lone hangman carried out the executions after courts rejected last-minute pleas by the convicts’ lawyers, with the hearings going till late Thursday night.

“Our daughter has finally got justice, I thank the judiciary, the government,” the rape victim’s mother, Asha Devi, said outside the jail, where a large crowd gathered.

They broke into cheers as news of the hanging was confirmed.

The 23-year-old medical student was gang-raped and heavily injured on a moving bus in the Indian capital on Dec. 16, 2012, sparking mass protests and an international outcry.

She died nearly two weeks later at a Singapore hospital.

“It has been a long fight for justice. I dedicate this day to all daughters of this country, we will continue the battle,” Asha Devi added.

Nirbhaya’s father Badrinath Singh said his family would be meeting lawyers to identify grey areas in the trial procedure that came up with this case and push to address them.

The death warrants were issued for the first time on Jan. 7 and were deferred four times as lawyers used various legal options to delay the hangings.

Nirbhaya – “fearless” in Hindi – was the name given by the media to the physiotherapy student by the Indian media as a rape victim cannot be named under Indian law.

Six men, including one who was a juvenile at the time of the crime, were accused.

Ram Singh, who was the bus driver and one of the perpetrators, allegedly committed suicide in Tihar jail at the beginning of the trial.

The juvenile was let off in 2015 after three years in a reform home. This is the maximum punishment permissible for a juvenile.

The others – Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh Singh were sentenced to death by a trial court in 2013. This was upheld by higher courts.

Mukesh Singh was bus driver Ram Singh’s brother and Akshay Thakur was his assistant. Vinay Sharma was a gym assistant and Pawan Gupta a fruit vendor.

All of them lived in the Ravi Dass slum in south Delhi. They were aged between 20 and 30 at the time of the crime.

According to jail procedures, the bodies are to be taken for post mortem and then handed over to their families.

The jail authorities will make arrangements for cremation if relatives do not want the bodies, Tihar Jail spokesman Raj Kumar said earlier.

A death sentence is very rare in India and the sentence being carried out is even more infrequent.

Five men have been executed since 1995, three of them terrorists.

Despite stricter laws and measures to increase security for women since the Delhi gang rape, a high number of such crimes continues to be reported in India.

According to the latest government data available, 33,356 women and girls were raped in India in 2018.

Activists say many more rapes go unreported.

  • Lesotho’s First Lady charged with murder

The First Lady of Lesotho was charged with murder and remanded on Wednesday over the fatal shooting of her husband’s previous wife in 2017.

Maesaiah Thabane, who was married to Lesotho Prime Minister Thomas Thabane, had been in hiding since mid-January after police called her in for questioning over the killing of Lipolelo Thabane.

On Tuesday, Thabane turned herself in and appeared in court on Wednesday in handcuffs and under heavy police guard.

The court said she has a right to apply for bail, but deputy police commissioner Paseka Mokete said the police would object to any bail application because she had fled the country.

The prime minister’s previous wife was killed in June 2017. Maesaiah married the prime minister shortly after the death of Lipolelo, and right before he began his second term in office in the small African kingdom that is completely surrounded by South Africa.

The prime minister and Lipolelo had been in a drawn-out divorce battle while he was already in a relationship with Maesaiah.

The two women battled each other in court over who should be the legitimate first lady, with the judge ruling in favour of Lipolelo.

Maesaiah has also been charged with the attempted murder of the woman who was travelling with Lipolelo when she was shot dead.

  • Police arrest Patience Jonathan’s cousin for attempted murder

The Police in Bayelsa State have arrested Mr. Victor Oba, a cousin to a former first lady, Patience Jonathan, for attempting to kill his ex-lover, Seigha Atia.

Oba, who is the Manager of the first lady’s hotel, Aridolf Hotels and Spars, was said to have hit his 23-year-old ex-lover with his Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) damaging her left leg beyond treatment.

Oba, who was apprehended and taken to the Azikoro Police Station, was said to have left the girl for dead and zoomed off after engaging in the violent act.

It was learnt that influential persons were mounting pressure on the police to release Oba and sweep the matter under the carpet through bargaining for settlement, but the police had insisted on ensuring justice for the victim.

Doctors and at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Yenagoa were having busy schedules battling to save the life of Atia, who was said to be in shock when she was told her leg would be amputated to save her life.

A visit to the hospital revealed that Ati was in critical condition as she screamed intermittently in pains with blood dripping from her swollen leg.

Narrating the incident, the victim said: “On the day of the incident, we had an argument and he called me and asked me to come outside of our gate to get the rest of my things in his car. He said he was driving to our area at Ox-Bow Lake to come and give me my things since I was no longer interested in the relationship.

“He eventually showed up. He came down from his car, reached for the passenger seat, opened the door brought out two bags and handed them over to me. I opened the bag and I figured out my things weren’t complete, and I told him some of my things were not there and that I would come and pick up the rest of my things.

“At this point, he started screaming saying he would not want to see me close to his house. But I insisted I would come to take other things he did not bring to me.

“At this point, he was already in his car. He started raining abuses on me calling me unprintable names. I couldn’t take it. So, I responded. The next thing, he drove his car into me with speed. He hit me against our gate, held me there and did not reverse his car despite the fact that I was screaming in pains.

“He later reversed and I fell to the ground and he zoomed off. My neighbours, who watched what happened screamed for help and came to my rescue.

“This relationship lasted for four months. But I decided to quit when I discovered that he was a violent person. He had hit me once, that was when everything started to take a nosedive.

“I can’t walk for now, probably I will never walk with this leg. They would have amputated this leg earlier today. But they referred me to a specialist hospital in Port Harcourt. They want to see whether something could still be done and it must be done very fast before it gets to my knees”.

She added: “I’m devastated, but I’m fine, i will rise above it. I feel bad, I didn’t think someone could go this extreme”.

Also speaking, her sister Preye, begged the police to handle the matter with utmost professionalism despite the personalities involved in the interest of justice.

Preye described the action of Oba as unimaginable saying it was inconceivable to visit such violence on her sister.

“She said: “We are still shocked. We cannot believe this is happening at the same time I’m tired. I have not slept, am still exhausted.

“I was in the house when I heard a bang on the gate. I felt it was just someone who normally hits the gate or something, then I heard voices, and I knew my sister went out and I saw her on the floor, blood on her leg, I just ran to her, I was screaming, I just picked her up and luckily she was conscious.

“She told me Victor was responsible for what happened to her. The witnesses around there said he hit her and zoomed off. They had a misunderstanding; he insulted her then she responded, then he hit her, that was what eyewitnesses said.

“I don’t have so much confidence in the Police because of who the guy is. They called us and tried to settle, but we cant accept such settlement because right now my sister is at the verge of having her leg amputated.

“We want justice. This was an attempted murder, we want justice, we want things legally done the right way”.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Asimim Bytswat, confirmed the incident.

He said the suspected had been arrested for attempted murder and would be transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department of the Police Command.

    …31 robbery attempt foiled

No fewer than 19 Lagosians have been murdered in Lagos and 31 armed robbery attempt foiled, the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Zubairu Muazu disclosed on Monday.

Muazu, at a news conference in Ikeja, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, however, said Lagos witnessed a huge reduction in violent crimes over the last few months, a situation he said, could be attributed to the robust crime prevention strategies put in place by the Command.

According to him, the Command arrested 40 armed robbery suspects, 29 suspects for cultism, and 19 suspects for murder within one month.

He disclosed that 19 firearms and 51 ammunition rounds of live ammunition were recovered, while 31 armed robbery attempts were foiled.

In one of the command’s achievement, Muazu said the police arrested 11 notorious traffic robbery suspects on 14 September, 2019 at Igando area of the state.

He listed the names of the suspects as Ahmed Durojaiye, Waheed Oseni Rilwan Moshood and Taiwo Idowu, all known to be notorious armed robbers who specialised in snatching phones, money and other valuables from unsuspecting members of the public, mostly where there were traffic gridlocks.

“They operate mostly on motorcycles. The four suspects were arrested and one locally made pistol was recovered. They also confessed to be members of Eiye confraternity. A follow up investigation by the State CID led to the arrest of additional seven suspects: Mosuru Mukaila ‘m’ 20yrs, Ahmed Oyebode ‘m’ 29yrs , Seyi Ogundele ‘m’ 36yrs, Ogunmola Akintayo ‘m’ 30yrs , Olatunji segun ‘m’ 28yrs , Ayobami Olaniyi ‘m’ 20yrs and Oladimeji Mustapha ‘m’ 27yrs .

“They all confessed to be responsible for series of robberies at traffic points, bus stops, around Yabatech, Yaba, Ejigbo, Igando-ikotun, Ipaja and Isolo areas of the state. Other items recovered include: one Tricycle, five Bajaj motorcycles, two cutlasses and two phones.

“Investigation revealed that Ahmed Oyebode who is a cultist and motorcycle operator gives his bike out for robbery operations and is receiving stolen phones and cash derived from the operations as reward. Seyi Ogundele and Ogunmola Akintayo are well known leaders of Eiye cult group in Ejigbo. The suspects will be charged to Court,” Muazu said.

The commissioner also disclosed the arrest of Awawa Boys’ ring leader in an operation carried out on 21 September, 2019.

He said “on 21st September, 2019 at about 09:45 hours, operatives of Operation Crush attached to Area G Command Ogba, arrested one Toby Akinbayo alias Scorpion. He is the number one in the hierarchy of Awawa Boys. Their strongholds are Agege, Dopemu, Elere, Ijaye-Ojokoro, Alakuko, Pen-Cinema, Abattior, Iju and Oko-Oba.

“He is the most dreaded in the hierarchy of cult leaders and his gang is responsible for series of violent crimes and social disorders in the areas earlier mentioned. Two other members of his gang, namely Balogun Jide and Dolapo One were arrested. The suspects will be charged to Court.”

Another achievement, Muazu said was the arrest of three suspects who specialised in blackmail and preyed on their victims, especially married men by taking video recording of them with mischievous ladies and forcefully dispossess them of their valuables.

“The suspects are Aspita Mercy ‘m’, Jonathan Ukonues Estreem ‘m and Emmanuella Ozeegi ‘f’. Their modus operandi is to lure their victims, especially married men through unsolicited dating by Emmanuella Ozeegi and once she succeeds, she invites the victim to a hotel or residence of the kingpin Aspita Mercy. The lady will then make a phone call to her master and they will immediately enter into the room, attack their victims and order the lady and victim to be naked for video recording.

“The victim will be searched and dispossessed of his valuables and be forced to write an undertaking for payment of ransom or be threatened with the video clips going viral. The suspects have confessed having two successful operations. In the recent attempt, the suspects lured one Musa, a bureau de change agent to a hotel based on a request made by Emmanuella Ozeegi that she had some Euros currency at home which her brother brought from abroad and she wanted naira equivalent of two million. They were however arrested in the process. The suspects will be charged to court,” he explained.

  • How Olakunrin, Fasoranti’s daughter was killed in broad daylight in Ore – Police

The police in Ondo State have given details of how suspected herdsmen in a kidnap attempt, shot and killed Funke Olakunrin, the second daughter of Afenifere leader, Reuben Fasoranti.
Police spokesman, Femi Joseph, said the incident occurred between Kajola and Ore along Ondo-Ore road on Friday.
Recall that Afenifere’s spokesperson, Yinka Odumakin, had earlier insinuated on Friday evening that “Mrs Funke Olakunrin, based on accounts of all eyewitnesses, was killed by Fulani herdsmen who emerged from the bush, shot her and killed her in the process.”
Odumakin said the late Olakunrin was travelling from Akure to Ore when her vehicle was attacked alongside others.
However, the police spokesperson Joseph confirmed the attack and the death of Olakunrin said he was not aware the deceased was related to the Afenifere Chairman.
“It happened at a spot between Kajola and Ore, where some hoodlums numbering about 15, attacked two vehicles, 1 Toyota Land Cruiser and 1 Camry,” Joseph on Friday night.
“The the Land Cruiser was carrying five passengers, including the deceased, which we later identified as one Funke Olakunrin.
“They shot the woman, we rushed her to the hospital, but we lost her.
“Other four occupants that were abducted, we have rescued them.
“Inside the Camry too, we had three occupants, they were also abducted, but we have rescued them. We have rescued a total of seven persons taken during the attack.
“There is still one person left that we are still looking for, and we are working frantically to ensure that the hoodlums are brought to justice and ensure any other hostage were rescued,” he said.

The police spokesman said he would not confirm if the attackers were Fulani herdsmen, noting that until an arrest was made, it would be difficult to identify the persons and where they came from.
“No, you can’t shave the head of a man in his absence,” Joseph said. “You have to wait for us to arrest them. Somebody you have not arrested, it is difficult for you to establish his ethnicity.”
He said crime does not have colour, ethnicity or religion, adding that “crime is a crime and a criminal is a criminal.”
Afenifere is at the forefront of the campaign against the building of cattle settlement for herdsmen earlier promoted by the federal government.
The group had earlier raised the alarm over the rising wave of violent activities of herdsmen in the south west region, calling on the governors and security agencies to rise up to the situation to save the nation from an impending armed conflict.
The governors of the south west had also responded to an alarm by summoning a security summit where they had resolved to tackle the problems of herdsmen and kidnapping.
