Varsity suspends 6 students over alleged murder of colleague

The Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA), in Katsina State has suspended six students over the alleged murder of a 200-level student of the institution.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by Malam Habib Aminu-Umar, the spokesperson of the university and made available to newsmen in Katsina on Sunday.

Recall that the State Police Command had earlier announced the arrest of six students of the university in connection to the death of Abubakar Nasir-Barda, a 200 level-student.

“The management of the University on behalf of its Senate, staff and student is deeply saddened, concerned and highly regrets the unfortunate incident involving some of its students.

“It led to the sudden death of a 200-level Computer Science and Information Technology, from an unfortunate altercation over a female student.

“The University Management has been up and doing since the occurrence of the unfortunate incident to ensure justice is served to all.

“The management upon getting wind of the incident swiftly constituted an Interim ad-hoc committee to look into the case and feed management on development as they unfold,” he said.

According to him, a preliminary report submitted to the management on Sept. 30, by the committee revealed that the unfortunate incident occurred outside the university’s campus.

“But upon receipt of information, the university’s security were quickly mobilised to the scene for prompt intervention that halted further altercation between the students and apprehension of some students involved.

“The matter has already been taken over by Police, which led to the arrest of six students that are in connection with the incident as confirmed by the Police official press statement,” Aminu-Umar said.

According to him, the ad-hoc committee’s interim report had equally recommended the University Management to invoke session 5.5(a) Of the University Academic Policy by suspending all the six students involved in the matter pending the outcome of the police investigation.

“Which the management has approved by suspending indefinitely all the six students involved,” the university’s spokesperson revealed.

He said that while the police investigation was ongoing, the university management was assuring the public, particularly the university community that no stone shall be left unturned in ensuring justice was served.

Aminu-Umar further disclosed that the university management prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased.

Police parade 17 murder, kidnapping, cultism suspects in Ekiti

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Dare Ogundare, represented by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP. Sunday Abutu, said efforts were ongoing to arrest other members of the various gangs who had evaded arrest.

Ogundare, who enjoined citizens to be more security conscious, vigilant and report any untoward incident or happening within their localities to the nearest police station or call 08062335577, said that all the suspects would be taken to court for prosecution.

He said that one of the suspects attempted to kill one Ijadale Francis by assaulting and inflicting ‘high degree of injuries’ on him at Dove filling station, Aramoko-Ekiti.

“Investigation revealed that the suspect is an impersonator and serial offender who had been arrested by the command and charged to court for impersonating a military personnel,” he said.

The police commissioner said that the remaining 11 suspects, belonging to a criminal gang, were nabbed in Ikere-Ekiti for conspiracy, armed robbery, cultism, attempted murder, murder, arson and kidnapping.

He said that the suspects were arrested on Sept. 15, at about 09:30 a.m., based on a credible tip-off that some suspected cultists were planning another armed robbery attack from their hideout in Ikere-Ekiti.

The police boss added that the command’s Rapid Response Squad immediately mobilised to the scene and arrested the suspects who usually robbed innocent citizens of their valuables.

He said that upon investigation, it was discovered that the suspects partook in the attack and setting ablaze of Afao Divisional Police Headquarters, Ikere-Ekiti during the 2020 EndSARS protest.

Ogundare said that during the attack, they carted away arms and valuables from the stations, adding that one of the AK-47 rifles was recovered from them.

He added that intensified efforts by the RRS operatives led to the arrest of three other suspects.

The police boss also said that operatives of the command had, on Sept. 21, at about 12:30 p.m., swooped on a gang of suspected cultists in their criminal hideouts on Iworoko road, Ado-Ekiti.

He said that two suspects were arrested during the operation while others took to their heels.

Bolanle Raheem: Murder suspect, Drambi Vandi expresses regret

A police officer, Drambi Vandi, who allegedly shot and killed a Lagos-based lawyer on Christmas Day has closed his defence, before a Lagos High Court, Tafawa Balewa Square.

Vandi, is standing trial on a count charge of shooting and killing a Lagos-based lawyer, Mrs Omobolanle Raheem, on Dec. 25, 2022, at Ajah area of Lagos.

At the resumed hearing, the defendant’s counsel, Mr Jude Ugwu, led the defendant in evidence.

Vandi told the court that he had never come across the bullet that was shown in court as the alleged murder weapon.

He said that the bullet was not the same ammunition in his rifle on the day of the incident.

Vandi narrated how he attended a local training school where he learned about arms and ammunition.

He said that police are always given training every five months on rifles to refresh their memories.

The defendant said it was in the training school that he learnt about the different types of rifles, pistols and ammunition.

The defendant counsel, however, requested the court to produce exhibit P11(a), the bullet and magazine containing six bullets which is exhibit P19.

The witness, therefore, told the court that a portion of P19, was a shell of an assorted rifle used in AK-47 rifle, noting that the exhibit was used in a long range bullet.

He explained that the bullet shown in court could cover over 500 metres.

“If you line up 10 people, this particular bullet will go through all of them.

“When it is shot at a close range, it can’t remain inside the person’s body and any object at close range, it must penetrate through it.

“It must pass through at least four objects. This is not the ammunition in my rifle on Dec. 25, 2022.

“The rifle is an automatic. To use this bullet, you must cork the rifle and anyone around that area will hear the noise of the cork,” the defendant said.

He said that immediately the rifle was fired, the shell would fall right on the ground near the person that fired it and would remain at that point.

Vandi claimed that he had never seen the bullet until it was tendered in court.

The witness also said that the exhibit was not the type of ammunition used by the police.

When cross-examined by the Director of Public Prosecution, Dr Babajide Martins, the witness said that on Dec. 25, 2022, he was on duty at Ajah underbridge.

The witness said that he was on duty with a rifle which had 25 rounds of ammunition.

He explained that he signed and booked the rifle from the armourer.

He also told the court that he was not the only officer that was armed on that particular day.

Vandi also narrated how he was arrested, detained and how he wrote his statement after the incident.

“I wish the deceased is alive and I regret her death. May her soul rest in peace,” he concluded.

The defendant counsel had earlier announced to the court that the defendant was their only witness.

He, however, prayed the court to give them 21 days to file and adopt their written addresses.

After listening to evidence, Justice Ibironke Harrison, directed the parties to exchange their written addresses.

Harrison, however, adjourned the case until July 13 for adoption of final written addresses.

Former prisons chief charged with murder of famous journalist

The Philippine Department of Justice said it had indicted the former head of the Bureau of Corrections, Gerald Bantag, for allegedly “organising” the murder of Percival Mabasa, a prominent journalist.

Mabasa was better known in the country under the pseudonym Percy Lapid.

Bantag is charged with ordering the assassination of Mabasa after the latter left online comments that appeared to attribute bribery to the Bureau of Corrections head.

Moreover, Bantag is charged with ordering the assassination of prison inmate Cristito Palana Villamor, whom he allegedly used to give the order for the assassination of Mabasa to a killer.

“On the part of respondent Bantag, sufficient circumstantial pieces of evidence have been presented to establish that he masterminded the assassination (of Mabasa),” the justice department said on Tuesday, as reported by Philippine newspaper Malaya.

The authorities specified that ten other suspects in the case would also be charged with the murders of Mabasa and Villamor.

Those include Bantag’s former deputy, Ricardo Zulueta, and shooter Joel Escorial, who has already admitted to killing the journalist.

In October 2022, Mabasa, who had long been criticizing the country’s authorities, was shot dead outside his house in the city of Las Pinas.

Later that month, Villamor, the alleged middleman in the murder of the radio commentator, also died in prison under strange circumstances.

Shortly after, Bantag was suspended as the chief of the Bureau of Corrections and summoned to a court to give testimony.

Bantag has denied the allegations of ordering Mabasa and Villamor’s killings.

  • George Muchai: Murder of a trade unionist – By Owei Lakemfa

George Muchai: Murder of a trade unionist – By Owei Lakemfa

It has taken me eight years to get round to writing this. George Muchai, Deputy  Secretary  General of the Kenyan Central Organization of Trade Unions, COTU, was also the serving Member of Parliament for the Kabete Constituency.

I was the Secretary General of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity, OATUU, the central organisation of Labour centres on the continent. I was in Accra, Ghana. The main people he was advising me about were  the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC in Abuja and the Acting President of OATUU, Francis Atwoli who was also the COTU Secretary General.

Muchai was worried that I was not taking serious his repeated warnings that my life was  endangered and needed to take preventive measures.

His analysis was that while a labour leader in Ghana who was working with the security services  against me, and the Abdulwaheed Omar-Ayuba Wabba leaders of the NLC  were  desperate to get me out of  OATUU,  the main danger to my life was Atwoli, his own boss in COTU. Muchai and Atwoli had grown up together in Nairobi and had known each other for half a century.

On December 28, 2014, Muchai  offered to send me a return ticket to Nairobi  for us to compare notes. I told him that if as he claims, the real threat to my life was Francis Atwoli and his gang,  how can I be safe in Nairobi?  Muchai, a tall unionist and politician with an arresting voice, laughed. He told me he would arrange adequate security for me as he had done for himself. He explained that apart from him having armed police guards and  private security, he had also taken other security measures.

Muchai  said he was prepared for an armed attack from Atwoli and some of his colleagues in COTU and assured me that any such attempt would lead to a bloodbath.

The altercation between Muchai and some leaders of COTU followed his allegations that six  Kenyan labour leaders; Francis Atwoli, COTU Chairman, Rajah A. Mwondi, Treasurer, Rebecca Nyathogora, and Trustees, Francis Wangara, Joseph O. Nyabiya and Washington Adongo Ododa,   had embezzled  190 billion shillings belonging to  COTU.  He followed  up his allegations  by going to court and  asking the Labour Relations Court to direct the Registrar of Trade Unions to audit the accounts of COTU.

Muchai also alleged that Atwoli as COTU  scribe, was  operating 13 secret accounts. He asked  the court to order six commercial banks to reveal the operators of the accounts.   As an interim measure, he wanted the court to freeze all accounts of COTU.

He also alleged that Francis Atwoli falsified documents on  the  September 2007 sale of a piece of land in Mombasa, had lied to the Criminal Investigation Department, CID  about it  and that: “Because of my refusal to cooperate in the scheme, I have been intimidated by goons and stopped from accessing my office.”

The COTU leadership responded to Muchai’s allegations by suspending him as Deputy  Secretary General.

Muchai told me that Francis Atwoli wants to kill him. He said that as part of the plot, some  COTU leaders had started a rumour that he was dating someone’s wife and that the husband was threatening to kill him. In response, he said he had called a press conference with his wife to refute the fake news. At the press conference, Muchai said: “This is a fabrication of people who are opposed to my leadership at COTU and who want to eliminate me and attribute my elimination to the so-called bitter husband, or rather to adultery.”

On Saturday, February 7, 2015, Muchai and his family were returning home from  a family outing. It was about 2.30 am. His family was in a car behind him. Muchai’s silver Toyota Fortuner slowed down at the junction of the Uhuru Highway and Kenyatta Avenue    roundabout. A Mercedes Benz station wagon rammed onto the front fender of the car carrying Muchai.  A  tall, dark passenger alighted from  the Mercedes Benz car and walked towards Muchai’s car. He was wearing a Balaclava mask with  his  gun concealed in  his jacket. Apparently, a professional marksman, he shot Muchai’s  driver, Stephen Wambugu, the two police bodyguards, Samuel Kalikia and Samuel Matanta,  and  Muchai. He then shot all four a second time. All bullets were on target. The entire shooting lasted about one minute.  All four men died on the spot.

It appeared that Muchai’s public claims that some COTU leaders want to murder him, had come to pass. But it could also be a case of an opportunist taking advantage of the Muchai-COTU public spats  to eliminate him.

However, not a few believed that Muchai was murdered by his trade union colleagues. At his  February 13, 2015 burial in  his Kamulu home, some mourners publicly said so. These included  the Cabinet Secretary (Minister) Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Services Hon. Kazungu Kambi and  Muchai’s colleagues in parliament including  Honourables  Alice Ng’ang’a, Thika and Moses Kuria of Gatundu. They also called for the arrest of Francis Atwoli in connection with the murders.

Atwoli was to complain that the public officers said: “The six COTU  officials are responsible for Hon Muchai’s death, we want to see them in handcuffs for Muchai’s murder.”

That day, an angry COTU leadership issued a rebuttal. Signed by Benson Okwaro, the man who replaced Muchai as COTU Deputy Secretary General, it read in part: “ we are equally aggrieved and saddened by the sudden death and brutal manner in which our late colleague met his death but for anyone to associate his death with COTU (K) would be the most unfortunate and diversionary engagement    meant to hoodwink Kenyans into not knowing who killed our late Brother Muchai.”

Francis Atwoli and five other COTU leaders filed a 500 Million Kenyan Shillings defamation suit against  Cabinet Secretary Kambi Kazungu over accusations  that they were complicit in the murder of Muchai. However, Justice Alfred Mabea  ruled that the trade unionists case was without merit.

Seven persons charged with Muchai’s murder were granted bail in December, 2022. Many consider them as fall guys.

It seems that the ghost of Muchai would not depart. When Francis Atwoli allegedly  threatened then Kenyan Vice President  William  Samoei Ruto, that his name will not be on the ballot, Ruto’s supporters would not take the threat lightly; they linked  it to Muchai’s murder.  Ruto  won and was sworn in as Kenyan President on September 13, 2022.

On July 5, 1969, Kenya’s most famous trade unionist, Tom Mboya was shot dead on what is now Moi Avenue in Nairobi.

As the eighth commemoration of his  murder rolled by this Tuesday, I made a silent prayer for my friend, George Muchai. May his murderers never know peace. Amen.
