Constitution Review: MURIC demands Sharia Courts, Friday holiday

Islamic human rights group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has called for constitutional amendments to establish Sharia Courts in all Southwest states of Nigeria.

MURIC also demanded that Fridays be declared public holidays in recognition of Muslim worship practices across the country.

The group’s Founder and Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, presented the proposal during the South West Zonal Public Hearing on constitutional review.

Akintola, who was represented by Dr Jamiu Busari, a group leader, addressed the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution.

He said the changes would enhance inclusiveness and protect the rights of Muslims in Nigeria’s Southwest region.

“No Sharia Court currently exists in Southwestern Nigeria, where Muslims arguably form the majority. This contradicts the pre-colonial Yoruba experience before the advent of British rule,” Akintola said.

He urged the establishment of Sharia Courts in all Southwestern states, including Edo, due to their Muslim populations.

He also called for constitutional provisions mandating state governors to establish Sharia Courts of Appeal.

“These courts will handle Muslim matters only, ensuring non-Muslims are not affected,” he added.

Akintola also urged the National Assembly to declare Fridays as public holidays for Muslim worship.

He said, “Thursdays and Fridays were traditional weekends for Muslims in the pre-colonial period.

“Currently, Nigeria recognises Saturday and Sunday as weekends, both favouring Christians,” he said.

He claimed the weekend structure was imposed by colonial authorities, with Saturday initially a half-day.

“Saturday was later made a full day to benefit Seventh-Day Adventists under Gen. Yakubu Gowon’s regime,” he added.

Akintola argued that the current weekend arrangement excludes Muslims and lacks religious balance.

“We demand Friday be included as a recognised weekend day for Muslims,” he said.

He noted Nigeria has eight national public holidays, five of which favour Christians and only three for Muslims.

Holidays listed include Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Eid-Kabir, Eid Fitr, and Maulud.

Akintola urged a constitutional amendment to make the Islamic New Year a public holiday.

He said this was already recognised in some states and should be adopted nationally.

He also called for the recognition of Islamic marriage certificates for official purposes.

“Christian marriages conducted in churches or registries are officially accepted nationwide.

“But Nikkah marriages are not recognised, creating problems for Muslim couples in formal settings,” he added.

Akintola described this as discriminatory in a democratic society.

He said, “A religious group’s marriage is officially accepted while another’s is ignored — this must change.”

Akintola proposed that Islamic marriages be granted equal legal recognition as Christian marriages.

The Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) echoed the call for judicial reforms to create Sharia Courts.

MUSWEN also proposed courts specialising in Islamic finance to support Muslim economic practices.

In response, Deputy Senate President, Sen. Jubrin Barau, gave assurances that all demands would be considered.

Barau was represented by Senate Leader, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele, at the Lagos public hearing.

He said the Senate would review all submissions and report findings to the National Assembly.

Other organisations, including youth, student, and women groups, also made presentations.

MURIC commends Jigawa Governor for supporting Hijab for Female security personnel

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), an Islamic human rights advocacy group, has praised the Governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, for his support of religious expression among Muslim women working in private security organizations.

In a statement issued on Thursday, MURIC’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, lauded Governor Namadi for instructing three private security companies operating in the state to permit their female Muslim employees to wear the hijab as part of their uniforms.

According to Akintola, the move reflects the governor’s strong understanding of Islamic values and his willingness to uphold them.

“Governor Umar Namadi demonstrates a rare resolve to resist cultural pressure and uphold principles of inclusivity, modesty, and dignity in the workplace,” Akintola stated. “His recent directive highlights his commitment to creating a respectful environment for Muslim women.”

He further urged Muslim public officials across the country to openly and sincerely practice their faith, asserting that doing so fosters both divine favor and societal respect.

“At the same time,” Akintola added, “Muslim leaders must ensure they uphold the rights of non-Muslims in their workplaces. Islam commands justice and kindness to all people, regardless of their religious beliefs.”

  • We’re not sole offtaker, market open to lower prices from any domestic refinery – NNPC replies MURIC

We’re not sole offtaker, market open to lower prices from any domestic refinery – NNPC replies MURIC

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has responded to a press release by the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), which alleged that the Dangote Refinery Limited (DRL) is being unfairly disadvantaged by NNPC’s actions.

In a statement signed by Olufemi Soneye, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, the company clarified that petroleum product pricing, including that from the Dangote Refinery, is driven by global market dynamics, not by NNPC’s involvement.

MURIC had suggested that recent adjustments in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) would prevent the Dangote Refinery from offering competitive prices and claimed that NNPC had become the sole offtaker for the refinery’s products.

In its response, NNPC Ltd provided the following clarifications, “To set the records straight, NNPC Ltd wishes to further state as follows: The pricing of petroleum products from any refinery, including the Dangote Refinery Ltd (DRL), is determined by global market forces. The recent changes in PMS prices have no impact on the DRL or any other domestic refinery’s access to the Nigerian market. In fact, if current prices are perceived as high, it presents an ideal opportunity for the refinery to sell its products at lower prices in the Nigerian market.

“Furthermore, we emphasize that there is no guarantee of lower prices associated with domestic refining compared to any global parity pricing framework, as confirmed by the DRL. The NNPC Ltd will only fully offtake PMS from the DRL if the market prices of PMS are higher than the pump prices in Nigeria. The DRL and any other domestic refinery are free to sell directly to any marketer on a willing buyer, willing seller basis, which is the current practice for all fully deregulated products. NNPC Ltd has no desire or intention to become the distributor for any entity in a free market environment, and therefore, the notion of becoming a sole offtaker does not arise.

“The NNPC Ltd cannot undermine a business in which it holds a billion-dollar stake.”

  • Give Dangote refinery a free hand to operate – MURIC tells FG

Give Dangote refinery a free hand to operate – MURIC tells FG

Following a fact-finding visit to Dangote Refinery by a team of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) on Thursday, September 5, 2024, the human rights organization has urged the Federal Government to give the refinery a free hand to operate

The right group in a statement issued on Friday, September 6, 2024 by the Executive Director of the group, Professor Ishaq Akintola said

The statement reads: “In view of the severe hardship facing Nigerians, in view of the fact that the masses have placed their hope in the likelihood of a drastic fall in the price of petroleum products once the Dangote Refinery starts functioning and in the face of the devastating blow delivered by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) by suddenly raising the price of its fuel and banning Dangote Refinery from supplying any other marketer except NNPC, we, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), concerned for the plight of poor Nigerians, went on a fact-finding mission to Dangote refinery.

“Seventeen members of our organization visited the newly-completed Dangote Refinery at Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State. Authorities of the refinery granted our request to enter the premises on self-recognition. The visit took place yesterday, Thursday, 5th September, 2024.

“Although full details of our findings will be disclosed in a press conference to be addressed very soon, we are constrained to issue an advance statement as a precursor to the press conference.

“Nigerians are going through severe hardship. There is hunger in the land. Inflation has made life difficult for many particularly after the removal of fuel subsidy which shot the price of petrol to the rooftop. But Nigerians were assured of coming relief as they were told that the price of petrol will reduce drastically when Dangote Refinery starts to function.

“But we were shocked to our marrows when NNPC suddenly announced an upward review of petrol from N617 to N897

This happened on Saturday, 31st August 2024 (just 24 hours to the commencement of full operations by Dangote Refinery).

“To make matters worse, NNPC made itself the only marketer of Dangote fuel thereby sandwiching the latter’s product. By taking these two actions, NNPC has effectively taken control of Dangote’s fuel and the real owner cannot determine the price of its own product. This is an ambush, a punch below the belt.

“If NNPC had not increased the price of its own fuel, the decision to monopolise Dangote’s fuel would have favoured the hoi polloi, but by increasing the price and restricting the supply of Dangote’s fuel to itself alone, NNPC has rendered Dangote Refinery helpless.

“MURIC finds NNPC’s action to be anti-people, immoral and lacking in conscience. It is an open secret that the prices of most products, particularly food items, are tied to the umbilical cords of petroleum and its price. The latter is the engine room that moves the economy.

“There is also no gainsaying the fact that Nigerians are hungry today because the price of petrol skyrocketed and the prices of foodstuffs rose astronomically and spontaneously.

“Nigerians became hungry and justifiably angry. Protests erupted North and South of the country. MURIC was among the patriotic groups that appealed to Nigerians to simmer down. Nigerians were told that the price of petrol would crash when Dangote Refinery comes on board

“But NNPC has shattered the hope of the jamaahiir (masses) by raising the price of petrol and disallowing other marketers from buying from Dangote Refinery. This is against the spirit of free economy. It contravenes natural law of justice. It is not fair. What was the contribution of NNPC to the new refinery? How can NNPC suddenly take full control of Dangote Refinery, the hope of the masses to whose process it contributed virtually nothing?

“We charge NNPC to retrace its steps on this matter. It is too sensitive. Nigerians had placed their hopes on a fait accompli status of Dangote’s fuel to reduce hardship. This refinery must not be strangulated.

“Besides, NNPC’s recent actions appear to stand in contradistinction with the policy of this administration. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu gave Nigerians his word that Dangote Refinery would be encouraged to realize its full potential. Who is NNPC working for, Tinubu or his detractors?

“NNPC must not allow fifth columnists whose wish is to bring down Tinubu-Shettima administration to have their way. NNPC should know that frustrating Nigerians is one of the fastest ways to bring a regime to a premature end.

“We, therefore, charge NNPC to go back to its old price. NNPC must also leave Dangote Refinery alone to operate at its maximum capacity, supply freely to marketers and fix its own prices as expected in a truly free market economy.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu supported the supply of crude oil to Dangote Refinery with payment in naira but our team discovered during the visit that crude oil is yet to be supplied. This is alarming. Is it still the cabal? We thought Tinubu had demystified the myth of the cabal.

“The world is watching and laughing at a nation that has garments yet walking about naked. As the father of the nation, President Tinubu must ensure that Nigeria does not dance naked in the global market place.”

  • BREAKING: Sokoto Gov planning to depose Sultan, Abubakar III – MURIC raises alarm

BREAKING: Sokoto Gov planning to depose Sultan, Abubakar III – MURIC raises alarm

Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has raised an alarm over alleged plan by Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu State to depose the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III.

The Executive Director of MURIC, Prof. Isiaq Akintola, raised the alarm in a statement on Monday.

Governor Aliyu had earlier deposed 15 traditional rulers for various offences.

In his statement, Akintola said Nigerian Muslims reject any thought of deposing the Sultan.

“Feelers in circulation indicate that the governor may descend on the Sultan of Sokoto any moment from now using any of the flimsy excuses used to dethrone the 15 traditional rulers whom he removed earlier.

“MURIC advises the governor to look before he leaps. The Sultan’s stool is not only traditional. It is also religious. In the same vein, his jurisdiction goes beyond Sokoto. It covers the whole of Nigeria. He is the spiritual head of all Nigerian Muslims.

“Therefore, any governor who tampers with the stool of the Sultan will have Nigerian Muslims to reckon with because the Sultan combines the office of the Sultan of Sokoto and that of the President General of the NSCIA,” Akintola said.

The MURIC boss warned that Governor Aliyu should not force Nigerian Muslims to take a drastically revolutionary measure.

He said having a traditional ruler as leader has been a condition Nigerian Muslims accepted a long time ago as a necessary weakness in the structure which they have to live with.

He said, “A military governor, Col. Yakubu Muazu, exposed this soft underbelly when he deposed Sultan Ibrahim Dasuki on 20th April, 1996. Nigerian Muslims will be forced to make a hard decision if Sokoto governors continue to diminish the authority of the Sultan.

“For the avoidance of any doubts, Sultan Muhammad Sa’d Abubakar is not only the Sultan of Sokoto but the Sultan of the Nigerian people. His performance and style of leadership have warmed him into the hearts of Nigerians.
“Nigerian Muslims North and South of the country may be constrained to pick Islamic scholars only as President General of the NSCIA and overall leader of Nigerian Muslims.

“It will be farewell to the leadership of traditional rulers over the NSCIA and an irreversible departure from Sokoto’s priviledged leadership position. But history will not be kind to Col. Yakubu Muazu and Ahmed Aliyu for ruining the chances of Sokoto.

“Once is happenstance, twice is a coincidence, the third time is enemy action. If the deposition of a Sultan and NSCIA leader happens a second time, Nigerian Muslims will not allow the embarrassment to happen a third time.
“MURIC reiterates its call on the Sokoto State House of Assembly to either repeal or review the state’s chieftaincy laws by adding the phrase ‘except the Sultan of Sokoto’ to Section 6, Cap 26 of the Laws of Northern Nigeria which empowers the state governor to depose the emirs including the Sultan.

“We urge Northern elites and Islamic scholars based in the North to intervene before it is too late. This is the time to lobby the Sokoto State House of Assembly and the governor himself. If the chieftaincy laws of Kano State can be repealed within 24 hours, nothing stops that of Sokoto State from being reviewed in favour of immunity for the office of the Sultan in a single day to save Nigerian Muslims from humongous embarrassment.”

Sokoto State Government is yet to react to MURIC’s allegation but it had earlier said there was a plan to amend section 76 of the local government and chieftaincy law to align with prevailing practices within the state.

  • Muslims must say no to NLC, TUC strike – MURIC

Muslims must say no to NLC, TUC strike – MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern, (MURIC), has called on Muslims not to join the ongoing strike by organized labour unions.

According to MURIC, the strike will make life unbearable for Muslims preparing for Id al-Kabir (Salah).

MURIC, therefore, advised the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, to postpone its strike until after the Muslim festival.

The group made the request on Monday in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

Part of the statement read: “There is no scintilla of doubt that the strike will make life unbearable for Muslims preparing for Id al-Kabir (Salah) which is just a few days away.

“As expected, the worker’s unions of other service-providing sectors like petroleum and electricity have offered to join. This means the lives of Nigerians are likely to be thrown into a state of higgledy-piggledy in the next few days.

“But what does NLC think will happen to Muslims whose festival of Id al-Kabir is already knocking on the door? Transport fares to and fro their various destinations will skyrocket. Movements will be so adversely affected that the whole Salah period will become a horrendous experience. Is that what NLC wants?

“The notice of strike was too short. It was given from the negotiation table and it was 48 hours or less. The approach of the current crop of NLC leaders is aggressive, arrogant, fascist and partisan. The body language is unmistakable. It is directed at bringing the government down. This NLC has no respect for the rule of law, not even an iota of decorum for democratic practices.

“If we cannot speak for the government, what about Nigerian Muslims whose lives your strike could turn into a sheer nightmare? Is this a deliberate attempt to make life uncomfortable for Muslims? Will NLC declare a strike one week before Christmas? Or is this about bringing down our Muslim-Muslim ticket? Is this part of the ‘religious war’ of ‘Yes Daddy’?

“This strike is ill-timed. It is a recipe for a topsy-turvy Salah. We advise NLC to postpone it till after the Salah. If NLC rejects our advice and goes ahead with its satanic strike, we will ask all Muslim workers who know that they will meet Allah yaom al-Qiyaamah (The Last Day) not to cooperate with NLC. They should reject the strike because it is an assault on the religion of Islam.

“We call on all Muslim leaders and Islamic organisations in Nigeria to speak up now before it is too late. We must reject the tyranny of Muslim-haters thinly veiled in unionism. We say ‘No To Strike in Salah.’”

  • MURIC defends N90bn Hajj subsidy

    MURIC defends N90bn Hajj subsidy

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has faulted criticisms over the recently approved N90 billion subsidy by President Bola Tinubu for the 2024 Hajj operation.

Prof. Ishaq Akintola, the Executive Director, MURIC stated this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.
Akintola said criticism was spiced with bad blood, garnished with toxic faith and served with tramadolised religiousity.

“President Bola Tinubu recently approved a N90 billion subsidy for the 2024 Hajj operation. However, the move has been heavily criticized by some individuals and groups. Some of the critics accused the president of giving undue favour to Muslim pilgrims because he is also a Muslim.

“Some even went as far as describing what Tinubu did as sponsoring Muslims on hajj. We can take it from there. There is a world of difference between sponsoring hajj and subsidizing it. To sponsor hajj, government has to pay the whole bill including the return ticket, accommodation in Saudi Arabia, feeding, etc, whereas it is only a part of the bill that government will pay in case of subsidy.

“We need to clarify our position on subsidising and sponsoring hajj as defined above within the context of the recent N90 billion subsidy offered by the Tinubu administration to support 2024 Muslim pilgrims.

“MURIC had opposed sponsorship of hajj by the federal, state, local government or government agencies, We still stand on this pronouncement. Even the Nigerian Supreme Council For Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) took this stand earlier in 2016,” he said.

Akintola added: “Tinubu’s subsidy is a horse of another colour. This is because the president’s intervention is not outright sponsorship but a rescue mission. Such rescue missions are not uncommon in the past when the nation was faced with a crisis that required government’s intervention.

“The Muslim pilgrims of 2024 had demonstrated expression of interest and committed themselves to the hajj scheme by paying the initial amount of N4.9 million in full. But the global economic downturn and the Nigerian foreign exchange bruhaha forced the hajj authorities (NAHCON) to demand an additional N1.9 million.

“At this point most of the prospective pilgrims had reached the end of their tethers. Some of them were able to raise the first tranche of N4.9 million by selling their properties. Others raised it by saving over a period of five or more years.

“To fully understand the plight of 2024 intending pilgrims, we may need to compare the fees paid by 2023 pilgrims. 2023 Hajj fare was N1.8m for pilgrims flying from Maiduguri and Yola. Others paid more depending on the distance.”

“But the cost of pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia hit the roofs this year for obvious reasons and the unfortunate prospective pilgrims faced a dilemma. It had somehow become a frustrating experience particularly for those who could not raise any additional money.

“The National Hajj Commission (NAHCON) has revealed that 46,000 out of the 95,000 slots given to Nigeria for the 2024 pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia have been unable to pay their fares and other charges for the 2024 Hajj.

“No responsible government anywhere in the world will ignore the plight of such a large number of its citizens under such a vulnerable and unpredictable condition. Tinubu’s intervention is therefore in order.

“By the way, it was not as if Tinubu played Father Christmas with the N90 billion subsidy because the actual amount needed to bail out the pilgrims was N230 billion. Many stakeholders, including the House of Representatives, appealed to the president to intervene in the matter of 2024 intending pilgrims before he made the move. Yet Tinubu did not pay the whole amount”.

“He did not even pay half of it. At least no mathematical abracadabra can make N90 billion one half of N230 billion. That explains why NAHCON has been appealing to state governments and other stakeholders to come up with the balance. As a result of NAHCON’s appeal, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi and a few others have added their widow’s mite.

  • MURIC to Muslims; Don’t let Nigeria fail

MURIC to Muslims; Don’t let Nigeria fail

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has appealed to Nigerian Muslims to do all within their power to ensure that the Nigerian project does not fail.

Prof. Ishaq Akintola, the Executive Director, MURIC, stated this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.Akintola called on Muslims in the country to work for the progress of the country and to shun all acts of economic sabotage.

“Although only the spiritually inclined are fully aware of its closeness, Ramadan 2024 is now creeping up like an underwater swimmer. Its full manifestation on the surface is expected about five weeks from now.

“Coming at a time when Nigeria’s economy is at its lowest ebb, with the naira in free fall and prices skyrocketing, 2024 Ramadan poses a potent challenge which the Muslims have no other choice than to grapple with. Yet it is a good opportunity for the Muslims to use the period to bring the nation’s ship which is in turbulent water to calm currents.

“This is exactly what is expected of good Muslims as Ramadan approaches and when it fully materializes. Good Muslims have no other choice. They cannot and should not join spoilers. They cannot and should not join violent demonstrators.

“The Tinubu-Shettima administration was put in place by a majority Muslim votes on Feb. 25, 2023. Therefore Muslims cannot and should not be the ones that will bring it down. Neither should they be among those who would sabotage the economy. This good Muslim majority can build a good Nigeria. Nay, it should be at the forefront of the mission to rebuild Nigeria,’’ he said.

Akintola added: “A good majority Muslim population should translate into a good Nigerian people. That is why the Glorious Qur’an says, ‘Cooperate in the doing of goodness and piety, and do not cooperate to perpetrate evil and aggression’ (Qur’an 5:2). This is what Islam instructs Muslims to do. They must build their country. They must not be part of those who want to pull it down.

“It is our firm belief that good Muslims can re-engineer the fabrics of this nation to produce a good Nigeria. We are convinced that Allah has already provided all the ingredients of greatness for our dear country. That was why He told Adam (peace be upon him), ‘There is enough for you in the land such that you will not suffer from hunger or nakedness. Neither will you suffer from thirst or the heat of the sun’ (Glorious Qur’an 20:118-119).

“Our problem has always been the modalities for harnessing those ingredients. What do we lack in Nigeria? We are robustly blessed with human and material resources. Complacency is our major problem. The people to do it are there. The tools are there. But so far we have failed to use what we have to get what we need.

“As 2024 Ramadan approaches, Nigerian Muslims must ponder over the instruction to ‘work’ which Allah told Prophet Muhammad (SAW) to tell Muslims, ‘Work, and Allah, His prophet and the believers will see your work’ (Glorious Qur’an 9:105).’’

“Allah did not tell us to sit down at home and expect manna from heaven. He told us to ‘work’ on the farmland if we want to eat. He told us to ‘work’ in the factories if we want technological breakthrough. He told us to ‘work’ by digging the earth if we want to discover hidden minerals. The keyword here is ‘work’.

“He also taught us to use the tools and ingredients which He gave us and never to allow them to be redundant. That was why He told Musa (peace be upon him) to ‘throw it’, i.e. to throw the staff in his hand when he faced the magicians of Fir’aon (Glorious Qur’an 20:19).

“Nigerian Muslims must ‘throw it’. Throw (use) the cutlasses, hoes, shovels, etc in their hands. Allah has provided us with a massive fertile and arable land. For crying out loud, this country has a total area of 923,768 square kilometers (356,669 square miles) thus making it the world’s 32nd largest country.

“Nigeria cannot lack manpower with a population of approximately 220 million people. Why then should we incur an annual food import bill of five billion dollars? Why? It is outrageous. Good Nigerian Muslims must produce food for Nigerians. Good Nigerian Muslims must make Nigeria great again’’.

“The woes of our naira require revolutionary actions. MURIC charges good Nigerian Muslims to buy made in Nigeria goods and patronize local service providers.

“We have received requests from Muslims who want MURIC to plead with the Federal Government concerning the cost of 2024 Hajj. But we are going to disappoint those who made the plea. We must be realistic. This is not the time to start making frivolous requests, particularly anything that will put additional pressure on the naira.

“We all know the rules and we know the state of the economy around the world. Hajj is the last of the five pillars of Islam and it is not compulsory if one does not have the means. What we should do if the price is too high this year is to wait for another year while we look for more money, if we can. Ceteris paribus, the naira will be stronger next year.

“Seeing the naira in such comatose condition, MURIC cannot, in good conscience, ask FG to worsen the country’s foreign exchange imbroglio by sourcing for more dollars for the hajj operation. No responsible government will do that and we will not ridicule Islam and the Ummah by making such a laughable request. The situation demands a pragmatic approach. MURIC actually suggested some years ago that FG should steer clear of Hajj. Nigerian Muslims can handle it’’.

“Nigeria will be good if the Muslims who form majority of the population are good. Peer influence will do the rest. This is the challenge facing Muslims in 2024 Ramadan. We have a chance to turn things around. It is our hope that Christian leaders will also persuade their followers to join hands with us in the onerous task of building this country. Good Muslims with Good Christians will make Nigeria a great nation.’’

  • MURIC condemns Plateau crisis

    MURIC condemns Plateau crisis

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has condemned the latest Plateau crisis which has claimed about eight people and to the combatants for calm.

Prof. Ishaq Akintola, the Executive Director,(MURIC), stated this in a statement in Abuja on Thursday.
“The death toll in the raging crisis in Mangu, Plateau State, has reached eight.

Six mosques and two churches have been burnt. The burnt mosques include a central mosque, the Anguwan Dawo Jumat Mosque. An Islamic school, Audi Islamiyyah, was also burnt. The two burnt churches, Deden and Assemblies of God’s Church are located in Sabon-Kasuwa in Dercom and Alogom areas of Mangu. Both belong to COCIN.

“MURIC denounces this wanton destruction of lives and properties, particularly houses of worship which should be respected. It is barbaric and satanic. We must learn to coexist peacefully.

‘’Reports gathered from the state branch of MURIC and that of the Jamaat Nasril Islam (JNI) states that the crisis started on Tuesday.
“We charge the security agents to be fair to all.

Partisanship in the security agencies can cause irreparable damage. It can also allow the crisis to escalate beyond imagination,’’ Akintola said.

He added:“We appeal to the people of Mangu in particular and Plateau State in general to stop all forms of hostility. They should cooperate with law enforcement agencies.

The name of Plateau State has become synonymous with killing and destruction. This has started to scare prospective investors, tourists and visitors away from the state. This is bound to affect the state’s economy.”

  • Share Tinubu’s rice now – MURIC sends strong warning to lawmakers

Share Tinubu’s rice now – MURIC sends strong warning to lawmakers

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has called on members of the National Assembly (NASS) to ensure proper distribution of thousands of bags of rice and other foodstuffs recently given to them for sharing by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

MURIC said this in a statement issued on Friday, by its Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola in Abuja.

“Each of Nigeria’s 109 Senators allegedly received N200 million worth of foodstuffs while their 360 counterparts in the House of Representatives were given N100 million worth each.

“Although a honourable member of the House from Edo was seen in a video gone viral displaying a warehouse filled with thousands of bags of rice, some senators and reps are still denying that they collected palliatives from the president.

“We see this as an attempt to mull or trivialize the Federal Government’s efforts at ameliorating the sufferings of the hoi polloi. Some of our lawmakers are causing confusion.

“How can only one lawmaker openly show his constituents thousands of bags of rice while the rest keep mum? How can the reps admit collecting massive palliatives while senators deny receiving anything. Is the Senate filled with saboteurs and confusionists,” Akintola said.

He added:“MURIC demands urgent and immediate clarification from the leaderships of both Senate and the House of Representatives. Where are their spokespersons? They must speak up before it is too late. Delay is dangerous. Nigerians are hungry. This is the kind of thing that provokes the people. Procrastination is the thief of time. Anarchists look for lacuna like this to spread their tales of horror in order to incite the masses against government.

“We appeal to the remaining members of the House who have received the palliatives to quickly begin the sharing among their constituents.  We also remind them to add publicity to the exercise. This release of a humongous number of bags of foodstuffs deserves an equally aggressive information outflow.

“There are too many enemies of progress out there spreading falsehood and the only way to silence them is to spread information about positive acts of government whenever it happens.

“Meanwhile we appeal to the good Nigerian people to exercise a little patience while the logistics are being sorted out by the lawmakers. This is definitely no fault of the government. Tinubu and Shettima have done what they should do by rolling out palliatives. The rest is in the hanhuman ds of our lawmakers.”

“MURIC will like to assure Nigerians that we will not stop calling out the lawmakers until they distribute what they have received. We are not just here for Allah-given fundamental rights of Muslims alone. We are also here for the welfare of every single Nigerian regardless of creed, ethnicity or gender.

“Our vision of Nigeria is that of a nation where people live together in peace and harmony, a nation in which no one is oppressed, where every citizen enjoys Allah-given fundamental human rights regardless of class, creed, or ethnicity.

“We remain oppressed until those golden principles of Islamic liberation theology are actualized, namely, freedom of worship for all, emancipation for the oppressed, justice for the persecuted, jobs for the jobless, food for the hungry, healing for the sick, clothing apparels for the naked and shelter for the homeless”.
