MURIC urges Muslims to take COVID-19 vaccine without fear

The Muslims Rights Concern (MURIC) has urged Muslim communities in Nigeria to take the COVID-19 vaccination without any fear.

The pro-Muslim non-governmental group said vaccination would help to curb the spread of the Coronavirus.

MURIC Director Ishaq Akintola gave the advice on Friday in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja.

“COVID-19 vaccine is designed to give protection to those who take it by making their bodies produce substances known as antibodies whose function is to fight disease.

“We have seen our leaders both at the federal and state levels taking the injections, this is to build confidence in us.

“We urge Nigerian Muslims and the rest of the citizenry to embrace the vaccine. Let us obey our leaders as enshrined in the Glorious Qur’an (4:59)’’, he said.

Akintola also reaffirmed the position of Islamic scholars on the importance of vaccination during pandemic.

“We reaffirm the position of scholars of Islam, especially that of the prolific Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah in his book Majmu‘ al-Fataawa .

“The scholars also cited the Hadith of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) where he said ‘Seek medical treatment’.

“And it was the consensus of Islamic scholars that vaccination is halaal (permissible)” he said.

The MURIC director called on cynics to have a rethink and accept the vaccine for the benefit of their health.

“We are concerned with the right of every Nigerian to live a healthy life free from any disease.

“We also believe that Nigerian lives matter as no Nigerian deserves to lose his life to any epidemic when a vaccine has been made available”, he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the country received four million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine on March 2.

NAN also reports that the vaccination exercise has since begun as doses of the vaccine have been sent to all states.

  • Islamic group calls out Obasanjo, slams Bishop Kukah for challenging Buhari

Islamic group calls out Obasanjo, slams Bishop Kukah for challenging Buhari

An Islamic group known as Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has come hard on the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Rev. Fr. Matthew Hassan Kukah for daring to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari over the state of the nation, Nigeria.

Bishop Kukah had suggested that with the current state of affairs in the country, there would have been a coup if it were a Southerner that is occupying the seat of the president.

However, irked by Kukah’s comments, MURIC in a statement released by its founder and Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola described the bishop as a first class blackmailer.

In the statement, the Islamic group also called out former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Rev. Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

    MURIC’s statement reads:

“We are shocked to our marrows by the vitriolic attack launched yesterday by Rev. Hasan Kukah against Islam as a religion. The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese referred to Islam as a violent religion. He also surreptitiously called for a coup against a democratically elected government of President Muhammadu Buhari whom he falsely accused of nepotism.

“According to him, ‘…There is no way any non-Northern Muslim President could have done a fraction of what President Buhari has done by his nepotism and gotten away with it. There would have been a military coup…’ In other words there could have been a coup if a non-Northerner had practised nepotism like Buhari.

“This is a most irresponsible pronouncement and we will not allow it to go unchallenged. Kukah’s statement is reckless, inflammatory and unguarded. It is the most egregious, luciferous, serpentine and diabolical statement of the year 2020. Hasan Mathew Kukah is ululating from the wrong side of the pulpit. Kukah is in the habit of demonizing and demarketing any president who happens to be a Muslim. In particular, we are most disappointed that such a heavily prejudiced and explosive statement is coming from the secretary of Nigeria’s Peace Committee. His behavior is consistently inconsistent with his status.

“Kukah referred to Islam as violent but his fellow faithful, Gana, has been training terrorists and killing Muslims in Benue for years. Kukah is fully aware of the creed of those who waylay travellers in the Plateau region, killing all Muslims among them and dumping them in the numerous ponds and wells of the Plateau landscape, never to be seen again. We would never have kno wn but for the General Alkali affair. How can those who train and arm cold-blooded killers turn around to call Islam a violent religion?

“Kukah lives in the heart of Islam and he has never been attacked. Kukah also knows how generous and charitable the people of Sokoto have been to him. Had it not been you had been good. This kind of allegation should have come from someone else, from somewhere else. Kukah has bitten the finger that fed him.

“But how dare you mock the North? Are you not part of that geographical entity? Is this the same man who claimed he wanted to rescue 10 million almajiris? Thank God we stopped your circus show. You deride the North but pretend you want to ‘rescue’ Northern children. You have demonstrated beyond any reasonable doubt that you have a disabled sense of belonging.

“We can understand Kukah’s frustration. Import duty waivers on every imported good, including private jets, are no longer available. Neither are billion naira contracts at the snap of a finger. A new Sheriff is in town. This is why Kukah has turned to a blackmailer nulli secundus.

“Kukah calls for a coup because blackmail is not working with Buhari. But is Kukah aware that it will be a Christian-inspired forceful change of government? What was the result of the first of such in the country? Even Nzeogwu will turn in his grave at the very thought of a church-motivated coup.

“It is unimaginable that such venom is being emited during Christmas when all are expected to give love. Nigerians can see what is happening. We send messages of love to Bishop Kukah at Christmas. He responds with pent-up anger, contempt and hate-filled emotion. Is this proper?

“Kukah’s allegation of nepotism against PMB holds no water. Buhari’s appointments by geo-political zone as published by a leading online newspaper has debunked Kukah’s verbal halitosis. The analysis showed that Buhari’s North West got 37 appointments, North East received 29, North Central secured 21, South West had 63, South East received 25 while South South got 24. South West benefited most. But is Buhari a Yoruba man? He gave the South West almost double what he gave his own North West. Is that nepotism? We challenge Kukah and his merchants of falsehood to provide their own data.

“This means that the North as a whole which Kukah accused of hegemony and for which reason Buhari is being accused of nepotism, got 87 appointments while the South received 112. All the false propaganda and allegation of nepotism against Buhari fell like a pack of cards with this analysis. Kukah’s diatribe is therefore sheer tramadolised religiousity. His allegations are as unfounded as they are baseless.

“It further goes to prove that allegations of northern hegemony, caliphate domination, Islamisation and fulanisation are not more than a myth, a mirage, a phantom. They are mere slogans adopted by political shenanigans, ethnic charlatans and religious demagogues to deceive gullible Nigerians.

“Kukah knows those who engage in favouritism but he has chosen to be a pot calling the kettle black. Rev. Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) inadvertently revealed the special favours rendered by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to Christians when he was president. The revelation was made at Orita Mefa Baptist Church, Ibadan, on Saturday, November 21, 2020 during the funeral service of Obasanjo’s two-term Pastor, Rev. S. T. Ola Akande.

“The CAN president poured encomiums on Obasanjo for favouring Christians during his regime. Among the special favours mentioned were the mass land allocation to the Baptist mission at Kubwa, Abuja; another land allocation to the Baptist in Festac town, Lagos; yet another land allocation to the church in Satellite town and another at highbrow Ikoyi, also for the church. No Muslim leader or Islamic organization has accused Obasanjo of favouritism to date. Perhaps Kukah thinks God was asleep during the regime of Obasanjo. But the garrulous bishop now has the temerity to remind Nigerians that God does not sleep.

“Certain people are unhappy with a situation whereby they can no longer walk freely into Aso Rock for the low-hanging apples. They therefore want a forceful change of government. But rather than wait on the straight for the next election as democrats, they prefer to take the bend. #EndSARS has failed. They must blackmail the president into submission.

“Kukah’s reference to a coup is a Satanic innuendo. We are aware that civilians have always been involved in coups in the past. Kukah’s interest is therefore not something new. But why is Kukah just inciting it? He should be man enough to spearhead it. Go ahead, Kukah, plan a coup. Who knows? You can be vice president. Dare to struggle. Dare to win”.

#EndSARS: Islamic group cautions Muslims against new protest

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has cautioned Nigerians, especially the Muslim faithful against any new protest.

MURIC Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, said this in a statement on Monday in Lagos.

“The attention of MURIC has been drawn to subterranean rumblings as precursors of demonstrations.

“We like to remind Nigerian Muslims in particular and all citizens in general that the last experience we had during #EndSARS protests was very bitter as it pushed the country to the edge of the precipice.

“Protests are legitimate as long as they are peaceful but the last one was hijacked, there is undisputable evidence showing that funds for the protest were provided by people who lack integrity and whose sources of income lack credibility.

“These are people who have been engaging in criminal activities and their topmost wish has always been to get rid of all signs of law enforcement agents,” he said.

Ishaq said that he expected the protests to abate the moment government accepted all the five demands made by the protesters but expressed regret that that did not happen.

“The demands were expanded until they became frivolous, ridiculous and irrational.

“The ensuing destruction of property during the protest was too massive, enough to discourage another protest so soon.

“Hoodlums have been allowed to destroy facilities that coming generations should enjoy.

“It is for these reasons that we are calling on Nigerian Muslims in particular and other citizens in general not to join any new protest. Enough is enough!” he said.

According to him, the Qur’an commands Muslim faithful to join hands in righteous deeds, not for aggression and destruction.

“It says, ‘Join hands together in good deeds and piety. But do not join others to commit sin and aggression’ (Qur’an 5:2).

“This is a clear injunction directed at Muslim faithful and it is enough for them to steer clear of any new protest.

“We should not allow anyone to deceive us into joining a rudderless protest again,” he said.

Ishaq, therefore, advised Muslim faithful and, indeed, every right thinking Nigerian to stay away from any meaningless strike.

“We must not join any fresh protest under whatever guise. Leaderless protests lead to chaos. Leaderless protests come with awful intentions. We should not join them.

“The last demonstration has taught us a bitter lesson, namely, that it is difficult to know the true intention of any protest. They may start peacefully but graduate to violent outings,” he said.

MURIC attacks Trump for questioning Buhari over ‘killing of Christians’

An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has attacked President Donald Trump of the United States for questioning President Muhammadu Buhari over the alleged killing of Christians in Nigeria.

The group in a statement signed by its Director, Prof Ishaq Akintola also accused the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, of selling the country to the US.

MURIC further warned Trump against bullying the Nigerian President for whatever reasons.

President Buhari had on Tuesday, during the Ministers’ retreat, said that Trump asked him during his visit to the US in 2018 why he was killing Christians.

MURIC said it take serious objection to President Donald Trump’s diction.

According to MURIC, Trump’s question was based on false and misleading reports which CAN has allegedly been sending to the outside world.

MURIC said it expected the US leader to know better because the killings are not being done by the Nigerian security agencies.

“Again, it is not Christians alone that are being killed. Muslims are also victims. This is the same false information that was spread about Boko Haram,” MURIC said.

The Islamic rights group said CAN was able to tell people that the terrorists were only killing Christians and bombing churches.

MURIC noted that Boko Haram as a terrorist group, is killing emirs, Imams, Islamic scholars and ordinary Muslims too and also destroying Islamic worship centres.

“The crisis is mainly between herders and farmers, not between the government of Buhari and Nigerian Christians. So how can anyone accuse President Buhari of killing Christians?” MURIC said.

MURIC also noted that the herders-farmers clashes predate were there before the administration of President Buhari came into being in 2015 and has been occurring for a very long time.

“It was there in ex-President Jonathan’s period and even in ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s days. Jonathan and Obasanjo are Christians but the killings also occurred during their regimes,” the group said.

It wondered why the Christian Association is making the situation look as if Buhari, a Muslim president is killing Nigerian Christians, adding that CAN is selling the country too cheaply to the US.

MURIC said it has no doubt that the narrative will change if President Buhari is succeeded by a Christian President in 2023.

Muslim group flays NBA over El-Rufai’s saga

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), in Lagos on Friday described the withdrawal of invitation to Nasir el-Rufai to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) conference as “parochial, myopic and jejune”.

MURIC director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, in a statment, said that the NBA, as a learned group should know better, adding that it was high level prejudice.

“The NBA yesterday removed the name of El-Rufai from the list of speakers at its 2020 Virtual Annual General Conference (AGC).

“I describe NBA’s action as parochial, myopic and jejune. It is high level prejudice. NBA as a group of learned literati should know better.

“The fact that NBA took the ill-advised step on account of a petition written by a group, Open Bar Initiative exposes NBA’s impatience, intolerance and self-conceit,” he said.

MURIC, however, called on all lawyers from the North not to allow this to slide, adding that any action of injustice must spark a reaction if tyranny is to be stopped in the world.

He urged the NBA to rescind its decision, adding that injury to one is injury to all.

The leadership of the NBA withdrew the invitation extended to el-Rufai to participate in the association’s forthcoming annual general meeting.

In a resolution at the NBA national executive council meeting on Wednesday, the association said the decision would be communicated to the governor.

“The National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association at its ongoing meeting resolves that the invitation to the Kaduna State Governor, H.E. Nasir El-Rufai by the 2020 Annual General Meeting Conference Planning Committee be withdrawn and decision communicated to the Governor,” the NBA said via its Twitter handle.

El-Rufai was among the guest speakers slated to participate in a session titled ‘Who is a Nigerian?… A Debate on National Identity.’

Others also billed to speak at the session are Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers; Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra and vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party at the 2019 election; Tunde Bakare, a cleric and chairman, African Advisory Council of the Royal Commonwealth Society; Oby Ezekwesili, an activist and former federal minister; and Salamatu Suleiman, the immediate past ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs, peace and security.

Those billed to speak at the conference include Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Femi Gbajabiamila, the Speaker of the House of Representatives; and Tanko Muhammad, the Chief Justice of Nigeria; Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president; Ike Ekweremadu, former deputy senate president; and Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation.

The 60th NBA annual general conference, its first-ever virtual event, is themed ‘Step Forward.’

Responding, Gov. el-Rufai, accused the NBA of embracing a “one-sided narrative” after the lawyers’ body bowed to pressure and withdrew his participation from next week’s NBA annual general conference.

In a statement on Thursday, el-Rufai said he had accepted the invitation to participate in the conference as part of his commitment to having a national conversation and the evolution of a national consensus.

“NBA platform or not, these worthy conversations must continue. He will continue to make his voice heard on the things our country needs to do for its progress,” Muyiwa Adekeye, Mr El-Rufai’s aide, said in the statement.

“While the decision about who speaks at its event is clearly the NBA’s, Malam El-Rufai wishes to make clear that he did not seek the platform and is not agitated that he has one less speaking engagement.”

  • CRA calls for arrest, prosecution of MURIC leaders over alleged links with ISWAP

CRA calls for arrest, prosecution of MURIC leaders over alleged links with ISWAP

The Christian Rights Agenda CRA, has called on the Federal government to immediately arrest and prosecute leaders of Muslims Rights Concern, MURIC, over its alleged links with the international terrorists organization Islamic State of West African Province ISWAP.

Last Friday, a member of the Sahara Strategy Group, (SSG) had asked the Nigerian Government to probe reports that some organisations in Nigeria like MURIC led by Professor Ishaq Akintola are receiving funds from ISWAP which has recently been operating in the North West.

At a conference held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on Friday, San Lous Keita a member of the SSG from Mali and former Intelligence Chief said reports available to the intelligence community in West Africa listed MURIC as one of the groups that has received funds from ISWAP in the last two years.

Keita had told the conference that MURIC was said to have received some 250, 000 dollars from ISWAP in the past months alleging that the funds were meant for MURIC to recruit and train people in the South West that would provide the logistics needed for ISWAP proposed stronghold on Southern Nigeria.

The CRA said it is not surprised by this revelation about MURIC’s rumored links with the terrorists organisation.

Over the years, CRA alleged that MURIC has been fanning the embers of religious bigotry through provocative and inciting statements.

CRA, therefore, in its statement called on the government to proscribe MURIC and prosecute its leaders.

“Now that the truth about MURIC, it’s operations, missions and sources of funding have been discovered, it is time for the Nigerian authorities to act and bring to an end the existence of this organization and its leaders prosecuted.

“Nigeria cannot afford to turn a blind eye to this damning revelations about the alleged activities of MURIC as allowing them to continue will portend grave danger for the peace, stability and unity of Nigeria.

The war against terrorism and insurgency cannot be won without bringing to an end the nefarious activities of organizations with links to terrorism, the CRA statement claimed.

It would be recalled that a group under the aegis of Coalition of Progressive Yoruba Islamic Groups (COPYIG) had accused MURIC DG of desperately working to destabilize Yorubaland and spur the region into inter-religious conflict.

However, earlier in the day, Prof Ishaq Akintola, in a statement refuting the allegations had said:

“We have no connection with ISWAP, ISIS or Al-Qaedah. We have always condemned terrorism and violence. We have also organised several programmes on the subject. It is impossible. The terrorists know their friends. They can never offer any money to MURIC. Our ways are not their ways. We hate violence. They love it. We respect women and adore children. They kidnap women and abuse them. We promote education and civilization. Terrorists destroy schools and cities. It is paradoxical that anybody can link us with such groups.

“We appeal to the Federal Government to investigate the source of this information. MURIC has never been involved in any international activity. We deliberately restricted ourselves to the Nigerian environment in order to avoid complications. We have enough on our hands within the country. So how can a former intelligence chief from far away Mali show interest in us? This smirks of fake news sponsored by those interested in getting MURIC out of the way.

“In our final remarks, we urge our detractors to desist from their evil ways and pursue the path of honour. We urge them to drop threats of assassination. It cannot deter us from the path of honour which we have chosen. They should also stop using non-existent Islamic organisations and fictitious names to attack us. It is the way of people who have no conscience or moral values.

“They think that it is actually MURIC or its Director who are at work but it is Allah Himself who is defending Nigerian Muslims. He is only using us. They will continue to fail as long as their ways are luciferous. Almighty Allah has a message for them:
    يُرِيدُونَ أَن يُطْفِئُوا نُورَ اللَّهِ بِأَفْوَاهِهِمْ وَيَأْبَى اللَّهُ إِلَّا أَن يُتِمَّ نُورَهُ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْكَافِرُونَ
They wish to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths but Allah will complete His light even if the unbelievers object to it (Qur’an 9:32

How ISWAP is using MURIC to recruit, train young Fulanis to unleash terror in South West – Ex-Intelligence Chief

…Says MURIC already received $250,000 logistics support from ISWAP

…We received funds from Nigerian Muslims including Fulanis, not ISWAP – MURIC speaks

A member of Sahara Strategy Group, (SSG) and former Intelligence Chief in Mali, San Louis Keita has accused Nigerian based Islamic body; Muslim Rights Concern, (MURIC) of receiving $250,000 support fund from Boko Haram affiliate, Islamic State for West Africa Province (ISWAP), to destabilise the country.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Keita made the allegation on Friday at a conference held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast while also calling on the federal government and relevant security agencies to probe further. According to him, the said money was given to MURIC to recruit young Fulani men living in the South West (Nigeria) states of Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti.

Keita, said reports available to the intelligence community in West Africa listed MURIC as one of the groups that has received funds from ISWAP in the last two years.

“In Mali, we have a list of groups listed to be working for ISWAP. There is a particular group, MURIC which is based in Nigeria and led by a University Professor, Ishaq Akintolar (sic). Intelligence report shows ISWAP has been holding series of meetings with MURIC. The group has been funded recently to the tune of 250,000 dollars brought in cash by ISWAP main agent in Nigeria who is a Lebanese working in Nigeria,” he told the conference on Friday

Keita said reports indicated that ISWAP asked MURIC to concentrate on recruiting young Fulani men living in Southern Nigeria.

“ISWAP knows it will be difficult to recruit people of Southern origin so MURIC was asked to concentrate on Fulani who live in the South West. This information was passed on to the Nigerian authorities. We believe they will do diligent investigation and nip in the bud plans by extremists to infiltrated West Africa.

He urged countries in West Africa to take serious the United States warning about ISIS and ISWAP plans to unleash terror on Southern Nigeria and other West African States.

We received funds from Nigerian Muslims including Fulanis, not ISWAP – MURIC speaks

Meanwhile, MURIC in a swift reaction on Tuesday described the allegation as a wicked concoction and a lie from the pit of Jahannam.

MURIC’s reaction was signed by its Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, on Tuesday.

The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to a rumour making the rounds in mainstream and social media circles that MURIC received $200,000 from ISWAP. It is a wicked concoction and a lie from the pit of Jahannam. We declare clearly, categorically and unequivocally that we have never had any contact with ISWAP or any other terrorist group.

“It is simply illogical. We have always condemned every act of terror whether it happened within or outside Nigeria. The motto of MURIC is ‘Dialogue, Not Violence’. So how can we descend so low as to collect money from terrorists? Such lies will not fly. The terrorists themselves know that we can never support them. So how can they give us money? The allegation is dead on arrival. We are a disciplined group. We have never been known to engage in any violent protest or attack since we established MURIC in 1994. It is most diabolical to accuse a group that has pursued peaceful advocacy for twenty six (26) years of having any connection with terrorists.

“It is an attempt to give a dog a bad name in order to hang it. Those who have been persecuting Nigerian Muslims are behind the false allegation. They have been used to oppressing Muslims and spreading false propaganda without anybody stopping them until MURIC began to use superior logic to confront them.

“They scampered to safety with their tails between their legs like frightened dogs. They became jittery. They are scared of MURIC and they think the only way to continue their anti-Muslim activities is to first get MURIC out of the way using foul means, including threat of assassination and wicked lies like this.

“Their methods are not only cowardly but devilish. They are desperate. They have been using fake Islamic organisations and fictitious Muslim names to attack us because they are cowards. We have received death threats. These attacks are coming from those who feel threatened by MURIC’s defence of Allah-given fundamental human rights of Nigerian Muslims. Those who have been oppressing Muslims in Nigeria are jittery. They think the only way out is to eliminate us or smear our reputation. But they have failed.

“Just two months ago, they used a fake Islamic organization to accuse the Director of MURIC of collecting N50 million from Fulani leaders in order to destabilise Yorubaland. They label us as slaves and agents of the Caliphate. We suspect that the misinformation was sponsored by those clamouring for the creation of Oduduwa Republic which MURIC has opposed. We remain committed to the unity and indivisibility of Nigeria.

“Contrary to lies that we received these huge amounts of money, we can prove that our organization is very poor. Omoyele Sowore, a young presidential candidate who visited our office during the 2019 presidential election was shocked to see the poor condition of our office. He found a desolate office: no computers, no printers, no photocopying machines, no scanners, no air conditioners, no plasma television; just tables and chairs. We had just one laptop.

“Sowore said he was surprised that a group whose impact is felt throughout Nigeria operates from such a poor environment. Sowore is still alive and can be reached. Could we still be poor if we had received N50 million from the Fulanis and $200,000 from ISWAP? By the way, we have the right to collect contributions from Nigerian Muslims, including Fulanis but ISWAP is another cup of tea. We will not touch terrorists’ money with a long pole.

“Besides, we could not pay the salaries of our staff and we had to cry out to Nigerian Muslims on social media concerning our plight. That was just last month. Of course Nigerian Muslims promptly came to our aid. From the North and South, Muslims donated with passion. Some gave just N1,000. Others gave more. An 18 year old girl donated N500 from her allowance.

“Is that terrorist money? How can anybody suggest that we collected money from ISWAP or ISIS? Our condition started improving as soon as Nigerian Muslims intervened. We put the money contributed to good use. We started renovating and extending our office. We boldly and proudly flew Nigeria’s green-white-green flag in front of our office. Perhaps our improved condition annoyed our oppressors and that explains the latest attempt to link us with ISWAP.

“It is a wicked lie. The evidence of donations received by MURIC is there for the security agencies to see. At least they have access to bank records. The contributions came in small amounts from hundreds of members. Do terrorists donate two thousand naira (N2,000)? Nigerian Muslims saw the effectiveness of our advocacy. They realized how poor we are and decided to come to our aid. Nobody can fault that because all non-governmental organisations solicit for funds and churches also collect contributions from Christian members.

“Envious enemies of Islam are just becoming scared. These lies are now being spewed in order to stop us. They are feeling the heat of our advocacy. They have threatened to kill us but we did not bother. They are desperate. Now they are using the name of an intelligence chief in far away Mali to tell this wicked lie. We strongly suspect that it is fake news.

“Our detractors should grow up. Their allegations are spurious, laughable illogical and therefore untenable. How can a man who does not speak Hausa recruit Fulanis in order to destabilize the South West?

“We have never received any money from any Arab country or from anywhere outside Nigeria. MURIC has branches in many states within the country and it is our poor members who contribute their widow’s mites from time to time. That was how we raised funds to purchase a building for use as headquarters in October 2017. That property is presently undergoing renovation and extension. The same method was adopted in December 2019 to buy the only vehicle owned by the organization (a bus). Is there any crime in grassroots mobilization and self-help? Is it a crime for an Islamic organization to own property?

They wish to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths but Allah will complete His light even if the unbelievers object to it (Qur’an 9:32).”

  • COVID-19: MURIC urges Muslim faithful to obey ban on social gathering

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has urged Muslim faithful to obey the ban on social gathering by the Lagos State Government to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.
MURIC Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, said this in a statement in Lagos on Monday.
Akintola said that MURIC would not support any Muslim group or individual found contravening the ban on public gathering.
He added that the ban was in the best interest of the people as it was not targeted at any religious group.
“We are nonplussed by the lethargy manifested by some Muslims towards the danger posed by COVID-19.
“In spite of government’s efforts at sensitising the general public on the need to shun gatherings, many Muslims are still calling our office, asking us to speak against the ban on public gatherings.
“Let me make our position clear on this; MURIC will not support any Muslim group found contravening the ban on public assembly because it is in the best interest of citizens.
“It is not targeted at any religious group,” he said.
He therefore warned Muslim faithful against tramadolised religiousity and articulated spirituality.
“MURIC salutes the umbrella Islamic organisation in Nigeria, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) for enlightening Muslims in the country on the need to obey government’s instructions on COVID-19.
“We also commend the efforts of other Islamic organisations who issued public statements announcing the stoppage of all gatherings of their followers until the Coronavirus crisis is over,” he said.
He said Muslim faithful should face the reality, adding that the manner of congregational Salat inside the Mosque had all the likelihoods of infection.
“We stand shoulder to shoulder and feet to feet. There must be no gap between a worshipers and the man standing next to him.
“On the contrary, health experts recommend at least one meter between persons in social interaction in order to prevent infection.
“We urge all Muslim faithful to see government’s instructions on COVID-19 as necessary and beneficial to them. It is therefore in their best interest to cooperate.
“Zuhr prayers should be offered at home in place of Jumu’at. The same may be done with the five congregational prayers where the number of those in the Mosque is more than 20,” he said.
  • MURIC reacts as Oodua group asks Sanusi to leave Lagos

An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has reacted angrily over the call made by a Yoruba socio-cultural group, the Apapo Oodua Koya, AOKOYA, that dethroned Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, should leave Lagos and return to Kano, his home State

AOKOYA had on Sunday asked the deposed Sanusi, who arrived Lagos on Saturday, to return to the North

MURIC described AOKOYA’s position as mean, callous and inhuman. The Muslim group made this known in a statement circulated on Monday, 16th March, 2020 by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

Sanusi was deposed on Monday, 9th March, 2020 by the Governor of Kano, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and thereafter banished to Awe in Nasarawa State.

However, an Abuja court on Friday 13th March, 2020 quashed his banishment and he moved to Lagos immediately.

“We are perturbed by the position of Apapo Oodua Koya. They are asking the deposed Emir who took refuge in Lagos to go back to the North,” MURIC said in a statement signed by its Director, Prof Ishaq Akintola.

“It is mean, callous and inhuman. That statement is egregious, detestable and nauseating. It smirks of heartlessness, intolerance and gymnastic irredentism. Worse still, it stands in contradistinction to the concept of Omoluabi (meaning well trained in good morals) of which the Yoruba have been well known for ages.

“We remind those behind AOKOYA that Yorubas are equally scattered across Nigeria. They should be wary of actions and utterances capable of inciting other tribes against the Yoruba in other places. This is the time for Yoruba leaders to caution extremist groups in their midst.

“AOKOYA also claimed that the ex-Emir was in Lagos to establish another Fulani Emirate in Yorubaland. Nothing could be more laughable. It is kindergarten, base and pedestrian reasoning.

“As an intellectually endowed race in this country, we expect that the Yoruba do not need to appeal to primordial sentiments. They are above it. They should therefore purge themselves of elements capable of whipping up irrational, illogical and unacceptable ideas.

“We also remind people in the South West in particular and across Nigeria in general that Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees freedom of movement as well as freedom to reside in any part of the country.

“The section says, ‘Every citizen of Nigeria is entitled to move freely throughout Nigeria and to reside in any part thereof, and no citizen of Nigeria shall be expelled from Nigeria or refused entry thereto or exit therefrom’

“We therefore call on the government of Lagos State to provide adequate security and comfort for the former emir just as it has always done for all its citizens.

“We advise the Yoruba group to distance itself from acrobatic xenophobia and to learn the arts of courtesy, civility and kindness. It must add a human face to activism. We have no scintilla of doubt that no true Omoluabi will reject a guest in a period of travail.

“The Yoruba race is one of the most accommodating on the African continent. This informs the popular Yoruba proverb ‘Oju alejo ni a ti nya owo, eyin re la nsan’, meaning, we can borrow money in the presence of a guest (to entertain him) and pay back after he has left.

“This proverb provides indisputable testimony to the uncommon hospitality of the Yoruba race. Yoruba leaders of today must not allow merchants of aggravated ethnicity to tarnish this good image,” it said.
