Amotekun: Fani-Kayode, MURIC leader, Akintola in bitter exchange of words

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode and the founder, Muslims Right Concern, MURIC, Prof. Ishaq Akintola have engaged in bitter exchange of words.

Fani-Kayode sparked off the war of words when he described Akintola as a traitor to the people of Southwest and dangerous enemy of the South.

He said the MURIC boss is a disgrace to Islam and a slave to the Fulanis.

“Ishaq Akintola is a traitor to the people of the South West and a dangerous enemy of the South. His name is Judas! Not only is he a gutless slave to the Fulani but he is also a disgrace to Islam.

“He should ask his owners and masters why they never allow Oduduwan Muslims to lead in prayer even though Islam got to the South West 400 years before Usman Dan Fodio set foot in northern Nigeria,” he said.

Akintola replied Fani-Kayode on Twitter, describing him as a religious bigot and a hater of the Muslim faith.

“Right of reply : Femi Fani-Kayode is a religious bigot, a Muslim hater,” Akintola tweeted.

  • MURIC condemns killing of CAN Chairman, Andimi

An Islamic group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned the murder of Lawan Andimi, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Michika local government area of Adamawa, describing it as horrendous, ungodly and barbaric.

The MURIC director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, in a statement issued and signed in Lagos on Wednesday, said that anyone who kills innocent people does not represent Islam.

“We are at a loss for words. This killing is horrendous, ungodly and barbaric.

“We condemn it in the strongest terms possible. We reiterate our earlier declaration that Boko Haram is not an Islamic group, rather it is a group of misled zealots.

“Any group that kills at will and sheds the blood of innocent people cannot represent Islam,” he said.

“We call on all Nigerians regardless of religious background to unite against Boko Haram. We must stand up together to fight the evil in our midst,” he said.

“We charge the Nigerian military to leave no stone unturned in its efforts to eliminate the insurgents.

“Our hearts are heavy as we remember the bereaved family. But we are assured in the global reach of God’s divine umbrella.

“Only Him can console them. Only Him can heal. We pray that the Almighty God will give succour to members of the deceased’s family, his friends and associates,” he said.

He commiserated with the leadership of CAN in particular and the Nigerian Christian community in general.

He added that it was only patience and statesmanship that had kept Nigeria going in times like this.

“We are all losing our loved and respected clerics, friends and family members.

“We are all victims. Let us console ourselves and strengthen our position with prayers instead of resorting to blame game,” he said.

  • MURIC seeks justice for 9 kidnapped Kano children

The Muslim Rights Concern has condemned the abduction and conversion to Christianity of nine children from Kano, urging the Police to quickly prosecute the suspects.
MURIC Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, in a statement on Monday, charged parents to be security conscious and for Muslims not to allow the incident generate animosity between them and their Christian neighbours.
According to him, the nine children were rescued by the police on Oct. 11 from Anambra where they were taken and allegedly sold as slaves.

“The children were abducted in Kano and taken to Onitsha in Anambra State.

“Kidnappers have taken over the house of God. The phenomenon of kidnapping for Christ has now rented the air. We are shocked to our marrows.

“It is such a big shame that some Christian fanatics will live among us only for the purpose of abducting our children, converting them to Christianity and selling them into slavery,” he said.

The director who said that not all christians were involved in the criminal behavior, urged Muslims faithful not to allow the incident generate animosity with their Christian neighbours.

“We therefore appeal to Muslims throughout the federation to dispassionately separate the wheat from the chaff.

“This Kano 9 incident should not be allowed to generate animosity between them and their Christian neighbours.

“Nonetheless, Muslim parents should be security conscious particularly around their children.

“Mallams in charge of Islamiyyah schools and madrasahs all over Nigeria are urged to do head-counting before the commencement of classes and immediately after.

“Muslim children should be given security tips. For instance, movement in groups should be encouraged while residents should heighten their vigilance.

“We appeal to the security agencies to provide adequate security around Islamiyyah schools and protect Muslim children from Christian abductors. The Kano 9 culprits must face the full wrath of the law,” Akintola said.

  • Bloody protests: MURIC endorses proscription of Shiites

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has endorsed the proscription of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) otherwise known as Shiites by the Federal Government.
In a statement issued on Monday in Ibadan by its Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, MURIC said the government action was imperative and decisive owing to Shiites’ violent disposition and disrespect to constitutional authority.
“MURIC recognises the right of Shiites to practice their faith but strictly within recognised rules of engagement. Shiites must respect Allah-given fundamental rights of their neighbours.
“They must genuinely renounce violence and pledge to stop the harassment of other citizens, review their revolutionary tenets particularly that which refuses to recognise federal and state governments.
“It is treasonable to vehemently persist that they will only recognise an Islamic government based on Shiite ideology alone,’’ MURIC said.
The group said that Boko Haram would not have festered so badly had former President Goodluck Jonathan promptly taken decisive action against their excesses.
MURIC which had earlier suggested dialogue for amicable settlement of the Shiites issue said it reviewed its position following certain developments.
“It will be recalled that we suggested that FG should initiate dialogue with the leadership of the Nigerian Muslim community and leaders of IMN in order to find an amicable settlement for the Shiite imbroglio.
“But more revelations have since come to our attention in the last 48 hours.
“For example, at least two Muslim neighbours of the Shiites came out openly and in writing to reveal stunning incidents of the use of violence by the group and their experiences date back to the 90s.
“A major Islamic organisation which is based in the North, the Jamaatu Ikhmad al-Bid’ah wa Ihyais-Sunnah (JIBWIS) also issued a strong statement calling on FG not to handle the Shiites with soft gloves.
“Most importantly, the testimonies have revealed a dangerous Shiite principle of non-recognition of either a federal or state government.

“Based on these new developments, we have no other choice than to call on Nigerians to allow FG to handle the situation, particularly in the face of large scale insecurity in the country,’’ MURIC said.

MURIC noted that the government had been accused of failure to take decisive action to stem the tide of insecurity.
The Islamic group, therefore, enjoined members of the civil society and individuals defending the Shiites to look at the larger picture of events.
It called on civil society to ponder over Shiite ideology which rejects the federal constitution, all constituted authority within the country including traditional rulers.
The group also called on the Iranian government to desist from interfering in the internal affairs of Nigeria, contending that they do not have moral right to dictate to the country on how to handle Shiite excesses.
“We exist simply to project, promote and protect the rights of all adherents of Islam and reject those who smear the image of Islam, kill, maim followers of other religions and their fellow Muslims.
`We recognise the authority of the federal government as well as those of state governments and we will not associate with those who seek to render asunder the sovereignty of our great country, Nigeria,’’ MURIC said.
The Federal High Court in Abuja had ordered the proscription of the Shi’ites’ movement as protests by the Islamic organisation rock Abuja.
Justice Nkeonye Maha issued the order in a ruling in which she also designated the activities of the Shiite organisation in any part of Nigeria “as acts of terrorism and illegality.”

  • MURIC petitions Buhari to stop BBNaija

The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has attacked the government of President Muhammadu Buhari for allowing the Big Brother Naija reality TV show go on.
The Islamic group branded the show being aired on DSTV as ‘immoral, dangerous and Bohemian.’
BBNaija, is currently making waves in Nigeria amongst young Nigerians as a result of the entertainment they derive from it.
The group made their angst known in a press statement made available to TheNewsGuru by it’s Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Friday.
The statement read in part: “We are being forcibly dragged to a world of nudity, shamelessness and open promiscuity. Inmates of BBNaija kiss, romance and engage in sex openly. BBNaija is Bohemian, anti-social, crude and immoral. It constitutes a potent danger to every home. BBNaija is Satanic. It is unacceptable.
“Where are our norms and values? Is it part of African culture to engage in sex in the open? Where are the authorities? Is the Ministry of Information and Culture sleeping? Is the National Orientation Agency on sabbatical? Who will protect our children from this despicable onslaught? Who did this to Nigeria?
“This reality show is dragging our children into a life of moral debauchery. It is robbing them of the last vestiges of honour. It is deleting the word ‘shame’ from their vocabulary. BB Naija has alienated our youth from the elders. A yawning lacuna now exists between the young and the old. Irreversible social crisis looms.
“We must see those who woo our young ones with humongous amounts of money, big cars and palatial buildings as those bent on destroying industry, diligence and integrity particularly among the youth. Nothing destroys a nation faster than materialism. The daughters of Jezebel are here already. Unless the authorities move with the speed of lightning, human dignity in Nigeria is going, going, going!
“Or do we not realize that for every single BB Naija inmate who wins big amount of money and a car, more than 50 million young people are misled? Qur’an 30:41 says, ‘Evil has appeared on both land and sea as a result of the handiworks of men…’ The Bible in Ephesians 4:19 was also describing these people when it says, ‘Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.’
“Already, the desperate quest for wealth by all means has gripped Nigerian youth like hay fever. It has railroaded them into Yahoo Yahoo, ritual killings and a museum mentality for the collection of female panties. Where exactly are we going?
“This development calls for serious concern and we are deeply concerned because we are the Muslim Rights Concern. Our hearts bleed in MURIC. This is the kind of evil that Muslim and Christian leaders should unite to fight with all their strength instead of dissipating their energy on a phantom Islamisation, a mirage called Fulanisation, Maradonic religiousity and gymnastic spirituality.
“We can put an end to this anomaly called BB Naija if Christians and Muslims bury the hatchet and come together to fight evil. Home is home. Moral debauchery knows no religion. The destructive influence of television shows like BB Naija penetrates both Christian and Muslim homes.
“Ditto for the custodians of our culture and tradition. Our traditional rulers ignore a program like this which has all the potentials to diminish the dignity of our culture. They are fighting over who should be chairman of the Council of traditional rulers. They want to be the King of kings and rivals of the Supreme Creator. Who placed a curse on Nigeria?
“Homo sapiens may not respect a single snake when they see one. But can anyone wait to see what follows if the cobra leads and it is faithfully followed by the python, the black mamba, rattle snake, garter snake and the anaconda? So what do you think will happen if our traditional rulers from the East, West and North march on Aso Rock to demand the immediate halt of this horrible show?
“To cap the edifice, MURIC calls for immediate and total ban on this satanic television show. We charge the Ministry of Information and Culture to move swiftly against BB Naija before moral debauchery becomes Nigeria’s middle name. Nigerian youth must be protected from themselves and the time to do so is now. We invite the National Assembly to intervene immediately and we appeal to traditional rulers to add their voices to this campaign.”

  • Don’t do ‘sit down look’ during forthcoming election – MURIC

Don’t do ‘sit down look’ during forthcoming election – MURIC

Prof. Ishaq Akintola, Director, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has appealed to Nigerians not to adopt a lukewarm attitude towards the forthcoming general election.

Akintola in a statement on Monday in Lagos, appealed to Nigerians to go out and vote massively in the general election.

”We must not be lackadaisical about this election because it is a watershed in the history of our nation.

”For the first time in a very long period, Nigerians have the opportunity to choose between sentiment and objectivity and between reality and sheer mirage.

”We have a lifetime opportunity to choose between motion without movement and progressive motion.

”There is an urgent need to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor. We must vote our conscience. What we are advocating is massive turnout at the polling booths.

”Christians, Muslims, traditionalists must go to the polls. Nigerians of all tribes must do the same. Poverty knows no religion. Disease knows no creed and hunger knows no tribe,” he said.
Akintola added:”The sacrifice which we must make on those voting days are not for us per se, it is for our children, our grand children and our great grand-children.

”Let us stand in the sun or in the rain as the case may be on that day knowing fully well that it is the day of sowing so that we can reap in future.”

Akintola also urged young Nigerians to eschew violence in all its ramifications before, during and after the election.

”Those who hire thugs will continue to live after the election, many of those who allow themselves to be used may die in the process.

”Our youths must therefore avoid violent acts like ballot-snatching and the kidnapping of opposition candidates,” he said.

MURIC appealed to Nigerian voters not to sell their votes saying it is their right to choose the direction they want the country to go.

”It is your conscience and your conscience is your essence. The man dies in him who puts his conscience on sale.

”We appeal to candidates of various categories in the general election to be valiant in contest, humble in victory and magnanimous in defeat. It must be Nigeria first,” he said.

  • MURIC tells FG to declare first day in Islamic Calendar as public holiday, rejects Jan 1

The Muslim Rights Concern has vowed to “go tough” if the Federal Government fails to recognise the Islamic calendar, stating that it would employ civil actions to press home its demands.

It lambasted the Federal Government for recognising January 1 as New Year Day while allegedly ignoring the Islamic calendar.

MURIC also ordered all Muslims to observe a sit-at-home on 1st Muharram 1441 as the beginning of their actions to ensure that the Federal Government recognises the Islamic calendar and declare the first day of the calendar as a public holiday

MURIC Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, in a statement obtained by The PUNCH, said several petitions had been written for the Islamic calendar to be recognised, yet it had been consistently turned down.

He said, “Nigerian Muslims feel marginalised. The reality of the Nigerian situation has subjected Muslims in the country to religious segregation.

“January 1, 2019 was declared by Federal Government in recognition of the Christo-Western Gregorian calendar. This happens every year.

“In essence, the government recognises the Christian calendar but spurns the Islamic calendar despite several petitions and appeals to it dating back to the 1960s demanding recognition for 1st Muharram as the first day of the Islamic calendar.

“In particular, MURIC has consistently made this demand at least for the past 10 years. This is religious apartheid.

“A society which desires peace must embrace justice and fairness. Justice is the soul of peace. Nobody can deny one and enjoy the other.

“It is this socio-economic imbalance that has been responsible for the absence of genuine and enduring peace in Nigeria.”

The Muslim activist said the Nigerian government had subjected Muslims in the country to religious segregation.

He said Muslims had suffered under colonial rule, as every policy of the colonial master was designed to eliminate all vestiges of Islam.

Akintola said it was more worrisome that Nigerian presidents, many of whom were Muslim, have failed to protect the rights of Muslims.

He added, “From Abubakar Tafawa Balewa to Murtala Muhammed, from Ibrahim Babangida to Sani Abacha, Musa Yar’Adua and now Muhammadu Buhari, no Muslim head of state had the political will to bell the cat.

“Though we are not unaware of the strategy of agents of neo-colonialism whose stock in trade is to blackmail Muslim heads of state with the ‘Islamisation’ agenda in order to put them permanently on the defence, we expect that every Nigerian leader must possess the courage to enthrone justice and equity.”

He commended state governments that had recognised the Islamic calendar and declared 1st Muharram as holiday, urging the Federal Government to follow suit.

The statement continued: “To start with, we are instructing our members throughout the federation to sit at home on 1st Muharram 1441 which corresponds to August 31, 2019.

“However, Muslims will observe the sit-at-home on Friday, August 30, 2019 to give more effect to their demand for parity and civil liberty.”

  • MURIC commends NBC over banning Falz’s ‘This is Nigeria’

MURIC commends NBC over banning Falz’s ‘This is Nigeria’

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has reacted over the ban of Falz’s video,’This is Nigeria’ by the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC).

The group on Monday released an official statement signed by the leader of the group, Prof. Ishaq Akintola.

MURIC had earlier said the video was offensive to the sensitivity of Muslims especially as the video contained a scene were girls dressed in Hijab we seen dancing the popular trending dance step, shaku shaku.

In a press release, the Islamic group commended NBC for putting a ban on the video and stressed that NBC should ensure that the video remained banned until the artiste removes all the offensive parts.

    Read their statement below

“The video portrayed Fulanis and Muslims as killers. It also showed women in hijab engaging in the notorious ‘Shaku Shaku’ dance. Although reactions to similar provocative works of art had been violent in the past, MURIC as an elite Islamic group decided to adopt dialogue. We asked Falz to withdraw the video or we would sue him. Instead of showing remorse he dared us. We knew he could delay the court case for years because he is a lawyer and he would use every trick in the books to frustrate us. That was why he was boasting.

“Therefore, instead of going to court, we decided to ambush him by sending a petition to the video board. This week, the NBC banned the video and others like it. He should be the one to go to court now if he likes. Let him go and show how brilliant he is in court. He and his fans laughed at us when we complained about his provocative and vulgar video. But there is no doubt that he who laughs last laughs best”, the statement read.

“We also love works of art and we respect artists who come out with brilliant ideas. We recognize the right of every artist to produce. But the right of an artist to produce whatever he likes stops where the rights of other citizens begin. Like all other citizens, we Muslims have the right to the dignity of our persons. Nobody can take that right from us. Our right is our right. The law is very clear about that. Fela Anikulapo Kuti used his songs to fight military dictatorship and other ills in the Nigerian society. But he never attacked Muslims or Christians. Neither did he incite Nigerians against any ethnic group. He criticized religious groups but never in a vulgar manner and he never exposed Muslims or Christians to ridicule”.

“It is incidents like this which lead to religious crisis. Fortunately we handled it intellectually. Other people could have allowed it to escalate into a major religious crisis and turned it into another opportunity to kill, maim and destroy properties. It is rather unfortunate that Nigerians are yet to appreciate what MURIC has been doing in this regard.

“It is germane at this juncture to analyse the anatomy of terrorism and religious violence. The cassu belli of most terrorist acts and religious violence is open or perceived injustice, including inadvertent or deliberate provocation. There is no smoke without fire and a good fire-fighter will point his hose at the fire, not at the smoke.

“Injustice and provocation are the gays of terrorism. The latter is mere smoke and an ordinary symptom, not the real disease. The world has been running after terrorists all this while without addressing the root cause. It is a wild goose chase. Whoever wishes to genuinely address terrorism must uproot injustice and provocation. It is high time we stopped trying to extinguish smoke instead of putting off the real fire.

“We want Nigerians to know that MURIC is inculcating a new culture of dialogue and informed response as the only civilised alternatives to spontaneous violence. We engaged Falz in dialogue instead of inciting young Muslims to start violent demonstrations. When he proved difficult, we extended the dialogue circle to the appropriate government agency. Muslims would have been called all sorts of names if we had started demonstrating or if we had been violent on the issue of Falz’ vulgar video. The image of Islam would also have been tarnished. But MURIC decided to be faithful to its avowed motto which is ‘Dialogue, not Violence’.

“This method has also proved very efficacious in many other cases handled by us. The most recent is that of the Lebanese company manager who did not allow his Muslim workers to attend Jumat prayer on Fridays or to observe Salat az-Zuhr. We adopted dialogue through writing and the manager eventually allowed Muslim workers to observe Zuhr within the company’s premises and to go for Jumat prayer. He also visited our office last Monday, 6th August, 2018. During the visit, he pledged to allow religious freedom henceforth and the whole issue was amicably settled. We took pictures together and exchanged pleasantries. Though a non-Muslim, he has become our friend. In essence, MURIC is inculcating religious tolerance, peaceful coexistence and eliminating religious violence.

“We appeal to Nigerians to always follow this laudable method. Let us all abide by this motto at all times: ‘Dialogue, not Violence’. Let us say goodbye to religious violence. We can get justice if we engage in dialogue and follow due process. We can still get our rights without shedding blood. Grievance is a square peg but violence is a round hole. There can never be synergy between the two. What you seek is not what you get and most of those who may die or sustain injuries are innocent passersby, vulnerable children and women. We therefore urge Nigerians and others around the world to join our quiet and peaceful revolution”.

  • Muslim group commends Law School for calling Amasa to bar

Muslim group commends Law School for calling Amasa to bar

Prof. Ishaq Akintola has commended the Nigerian Law School, the body of Benchers and the Council of Legal Education for calling Firdaus Amasa to bar with her hijab on.

Akintola, who is the Director, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) made this known in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos.

He said the Nigerian law school had succeeded in restoring the confidence of Nigerian Muslims in legal education by giving recognition to the identity of Amasa.

The Nigerian law school called Amasa and 11 other Muslims to bar on Tuesday; they were allowed to wear their hijab as they joined other 1,550 students.

Amasa was denied entry into the hall for the ceremony in December 2017.

MURIC appealed to the authorities to allow other female Muslim students who had decided to wear hijab below their wigs in future call to bar ceremonies.

“Muslims cannot be fully integrated into all aspects of Nigerian life unless authorities make inclusiveness a cardinal principle in their policies, rules and regulations.

“We also commend all Islamic organisations that showed interest in the struggle to liberate the Nigerian Muslim woman from the shackles of neo-colonialism as epitomized by the Amasa.

“In particular, we treasure the advice and diplomatic support by the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III.

“We also commend Muslim youths who heeded our appeal for calm and therefore avoided public demonstrations over the Law school hijab imbroglio.

“This is indubitable evidence that MURIC’s efforts at re-engineering Muslim youths towards non-violence is yielding fruits.

“We salute Amasa, her father, Alhaji Abdullahi Amasa, for sacrificing so much for a cause which they believe in.’’

The director urged female Muslim law students who were already accustomed to using hijab to continuing wearing it without nursing any fear of persecution.

“Hijab is an Allah-given fundamental human right of every Muslim woman. Our hijab is our right and our right is our right.

“We assure Nigerian Muslim women of unflinching solidarity and full support of Nigerian Muslims.”

He urged Muslims in the country to be humble in victory, to seek no vengeance, to avoid issuing provocative statements and to pray for a successful law career for Amasa.

  • Muslims are victims of senseless killings too, MURIC tells CAN

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to see ongoing attacks by suspected herdsmen as not a sectional issue but a tragedy that befalls every body in the country.

The group made this remark in reaction to last week’s call by the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for Christians across the country to hold demonstrations after church service on Sunday over killings in the Middle Belt and other regions of the country.

Last Sunday Christians in states like Lagos, Akure, Osogbo and Ado-Ekiti held peaceful protests in response to the directive of the CAN chairman.

MURIC’s director, Ishaq Akintola, said as much as his group respects the feelings of the Christians in the country concerning the development in the Middle Belt, CAN should also understand that Muslims are also direct victims of the herdsmen’s violence.

“…We reaffirm our earlier position that Christians have not been the only victims of the killings around the country,” he said.

He added that “Muslims are losing hundreds of faithfuls on a monthly basis in the North East as Boko Haram unleashes terror on the predominantly Muslim populace.

Citing recent examples of communal violence as reference point, th MURIC boss said “36 Muslims were killed in Birane Village in Zurmi Local Council, Zamfara State on February 16, 2018.

Six Muslims were killed in Jidari Polo area of Maiduguri on April 26, 2018.

Even yesterday, Sunday 29th April, 2018, another 15 Muslims were killed in Bawon-Daji village, in Anka District of Zamfara. Again, more than 12 Muslims were waylaid and killed in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, when the corpses of the two priests killed in the Benue church attack were brought to the city. These are verifiable attacks by those free of the ‘lazymania’ virus.

So the question arises: why kill innocent Muslim travellers when peaceful protests were already being planned?

The pointable point is that we are all victims. Both Christians and Muslims have lost their members to criminals and blood-thirsty elements of our country.
Professor Akintola however pointed out that rather than the CAN calling for a one-sided protest rally, it would have made more impact had both of the two religious groups had a joint protest.

Meaningful impact could have been made if both Christians and Muslims held a joint protest against the failure of government to stem the tide of killings.

That would make it impossible for observers to read meanings into yesterday’s protest. It would stop questions like, “Why are they demonstrating now? Is it because Buhari is a Muslim? Why didn’t they protest when Jonathan was in power? Were there no killings in Jonathan’s time? Do they want to bring Buhari’s government down?”.
