  • ‘My success came through years of struggle’-Tunde Obe

Tunde and Wunmi Obe are a popular showbiz couple who are known for their ever green and inspirational songs. Over the years , they have become worthy rolemodels to youngsters and celebrity couples.Speaking in an interview with The Sun, Tunde stated that his success is as a result of ears of struggles.

According to him:” A lot of people say music of this generation doesn’t have substance and it’s the truth. We had a lot of substance then and you couldn’t just do a wishy-washy song. Of course, everyone had one wish-washy song at a point in time but an album is supposed to be like a novel. It doesn’t have to be same beats with different lyrics on it, it should be dynamic. The next song and album tells a story of the singer, so by the time you listen to one or two tracks, you will have an idea about the musician’s experience. But now everyone is just on the fast lane, flying on private jets and on drinking spree.

“Where there is so much poverty, people like seeing wealth and I always say it, the people that really have money are quiet about it, they don’t talk. I am not even on Instagram and the only social media account I maintain is Twitter and that’s because I need an outlet where I can reach my fans. You can’t see my mansion or my cars on my social media account; never, because that’s not what I am selling. My success came through many years of struggle, so what am I showing off? Every morning, when I wake up, I thank God that I have achieved so much in my life, so I don’t have to show off”.

  • ‘Artistes of this generation sing about mundane things’- Ras kimono

‘Artistes of this generation sing about mundane things’- Ras kimono

Nigerian Reggae icon, Ras Kimono has expressed his dissatisfaction over the quality of music being churned out by artistes of this generation. Kimono said unlike in the past when music was being used as a tool for social change, music of this generation are all about boobs and butts.

Speaking in an interview with Punch, he said:”Music is supposed to be a weapon of social change. A musician is supposed to be a prophet who speaks the truth as it affects everybody in the society. But can you tell me what these young artistes are preaching about. They do nothing but sing about butt, boobs and other mundane things that do not add value to anybody.

“It is not a bad thing to sing party or dancehall music but there is a problem when 95 per cent of the music out there sound the same and don’t even have any meaning. Most times, I listen to these songs and get angry. Look at the musicians of yesteryears, the songs are still relevant today, decades after they were originally released. But if you listen to a song that was released just last year, you may want to throw up. That’s because those songs have very short life-span.

“After people dance to it for some time, they dump it in the trash bin of time and move on to the next song. That is not what music is supposed to be about. People still play Fela’s music today because it still has something to offer. Reggae music, which I do, dwells on topical issues bothering the society. I really want the younger artistes to have a change of heart and think of the future; it is very important”.

  • How motherhood affected my music- Omawunmi

Omawunmi needs no introduction . Over the years, she has gained the reputation for becoming one of the revered Nigerian female artistes. However, the rhythm changed for this award winning musician when she became a mother and took time out to focus on family.

In an interview with Guardian, the Megbele singer talks about the effect of motherhood on her music.

According to her:”Yes! I won’t lie. It is a very difficult choice to make but you have to make that choice. Most people find a beautiful balance, especially when money dey many and I pray that God gives me the room to get that kind of balance. As a mother, it changed my reasoning, there are some people that will disagree with what I am saying and say “No, because you are a mother doesn’t mean that you should cool down, you should go twice as hard”. See someone like Beyoncé, it doesn’t stop her from being a great mum but I am of the opinion that at some point music is as I feel it. I put it out, so technically I have not really changed my sound. I have one or two upbeat songs that will put you in that place but Omawumi will always bring out songs that will make you ask, what was she thinking? Where was she going with this? It is always songs that will make you question yourself and definitely good music that can stand the test of time.”

Speaking on not being able to release music from time to time, Omawunmi said the ideal thing is for her fans to know the truth about her music

“So yeah! It did change me with sense of my honesty with regards to my music, I decided that I can go into the studio and churn out hits all the time but the ideal thing to do is to make sure that your fans know the truth about your style, about your music, what you feel inside and then you put it out there so that the honesty of your sound will shine through.”

“The media focuses more on hip-hop music than other genre of music, which is why it seems that it is dying. You must understand that with all the different kinds of music, if you do not bring it to the people, they would only make do with what is available.Remember that the people never really left the music, but it is because the music has not been given that platform to shine as others”.
