GOC charges NAF troops to work on trajectory for desired peace, stability

Maj.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division Nigerian Army, Kaduna, has charged Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel to continue working along the trajectory of bringing the desired peace and stability to Nigeria.

Lagbaja gave the charge on Friday while speaking as a special guest of honor at the Base Socio-cultural Activities (BASA), held at the NAF Base in Kaduna.

Newsmen reports that BASA could be traced to pre independence West African Frontier Forces which, due to its diverse cultural inclinations of the West

African soldiers, the colonial authorities introduced the West African Social Activities.

BASA is organised once yearly to grant the requests by soldiers to participate in their local cultural rituals.
“It had remained the avenue to showcase diverse cultures of the base communities across the country and to appreciate hard work and gallantry of individual soldiers
    during the year.

Lagbaja also said that the BASA was organized for personnel that worked within and outside the base with their families to unwind, eat and socialise in an informal setting.

He added that it was a befitting ending to operational and administrative activities of the formation.
While charging the NAF personnel on dedication, resilience and hard work, the GOC commended the Air Officer Commading (AOC) for organising the occasion.

Also, the AOC ATC, AVM Nnamdi Ananaba, said officers and Air men/women of the Command and the service in general worked hard from beginning to the end of the year.

Ananabs said BASA was an avenue to promote civil military relationship with members of host communities.
He said that haven worked through out the year, it was important to organise the event for them to unwind.
Ananaba said the event was deliberately organised to recognise the cultural diversity of the country.

He noted that the event, which showcased the diverse cultures, was a unifying factor for the country.
“Soldiers came from different background, brought together and trained to work as one defenders of the nation.

“The BASA reminds them that they all come from diverse societies, and enable them to bond more and become more effective in the battlefield,” Ananaba said.

The AOC thanked the families of the soldiers, saying that “being a soldier is not easy, in the sense that they spend most of their time away from their families.

“If we don’t have dedicated family members, dedicated wives and disciplined children who take care of the home front for us, you can imagine how it will be for us in the battlefield.

“We will definitely not be focused, therefore we need to keep encouraging them to keep their good work for us,” he said.

Ananaba said it was an age-long event which was gradually relegated to the background due to intensity of military operations.

“This year our amiable Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, hinging on one of the key drivers of his vision which borders on bolstering morale by improving personnel welfare, felt the need for this epic bonding event to take place across all NAF Units.

“Accordingly, he directed conduct of the BASA for year 2022.

“The event is truly a testament of the CAS interest in further unifying officers, airmen/airwomen and their families and a way of boosting morale and further strengthening the bond that holds us together as one big, united air force family.

Newsmen reports that high point of the event was cultural dance by the three major tribes in Nigeria, and tug of war between civilians in the base and airmen/women.

  • NAF neutralised two terror commanders, 100 others in Borno

NAF neutralised two terror commanders, 100 others in Borno

The Nigerian Air Force has said two terrorist kingpins were neutralised during air raids carried out by the air component of Operation Hadin Kai at the Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

The Air Force gave the names of the terrorist kingpins as Khaids Tukur and Bakura Jega, adding that over a hundred terrorists were also wasted during the air raid.

In a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet said the air raid was conducted after it was discovered that the commanders had placed their foot soldiers at strategic positions in the area.

The statement was titled, ‘Terrorists kingpins Khaids Abba Tukur, Bakura Jega, others confirmed neutralised in Air strikes as COAS and CAS fete troops in Maiduguri’.

It partly read, “Following an airstrike conducted by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai on 20 December 2022 at Mantari in Gezuwa area of Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, it has now been confirmed that several terrorists including Khaids Abbah Tukur, Maimusari, Bakura Jega, and several others were eliminated in the strike.

“The information was received just as the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao arrived Maiduguri earlier today, 25 December 2022 to celebrate the yuletide with frontline troops.

“The air strike was authorised after it was discovered that a Boko Haram terrorist commander simply known as Ikirima, had stationed his fighters and gun trucks at Mantari village, alongside other terrorists from other locations who had converged at the same location arrived with motorcycles and bicycles.

“Subsequently, the authorisation for an air strike was given leading to the elimination of several of the terrorists and structures in the area.

“After the first wave of air strikes, some surviving terrorists found their way back to the same location to evacuate the bodies of those neutralised in the air strike.

“This thus provided an opportunity for a follow-up strike on the same location which has been confirmed very successful as over 100 terrorists were neutralised with dozens said to be in critical condition.

“There were also confirmed reports that ISWAP and Boko Haram elements had perfected plans to resume active hostilities in the wake of the yuletide and forthcoming general elections.

“The timely intelligence received on their plans especially their attempt to attack soft targets in Bama LGA thus helped in the successful air strikes which reduced their will to regroup and attack innocent citizens.

“There is no doubt that the progress and gains being made especially by the air and ground troops have greatly contained an upsurge of terrorists campaigns within the Northeast zone in recent times.

“Both air and ground troops have, however, been cautioned on the need to remain focused on the end state.”

  • NAF decorates 26 newly promoted AVMs, 25 Air Commodores

NAF decorates 26 newly promoted AVMs, 25 Air Commodores

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has decorated the 26 newly promoted Air Vice Marshals and 25 Air Commodores, urging them to justify their elevations to the service of the country.

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, on Friday in Abuja said that the event was a crowning glory of dedication, diligence, and loyalty to service to the country and by extension the service.

The CAS reminded them that their new ranks would place demands of greater responsibilities upon them, particularly with regards to their contributions to improving NAF operational capabilities in furtherance of nation building and national security.

“This is more so, as we continue to face current and emerging security challenges associated with an increasing volatile and complex security environment where the very best of human resources is required.

“This situation underscored the need for all to be highly proficient in the conduct of your daily routines to provide clear and visionary leadership to your subordinates.”

This, he said, was to ensure that all of them lived up to expectations, adding that the promotion selection had been painstaking and thorough to guarantee a transparent and objective process.

“Accordingly, promotion can no longer be business as usual, while time on rank would, understandably, continue to be central factors such as merit, producrtivity and establishment vacancies.

“And to some extent, geographical spread have combined to raise the bar, and made the race to be even more competitive.

`Therefore, there is no gain saying that the newly promoted senior officers must have earned their new ranks by dint of hard work among other several criteria considered.

“As part of our desire to openly reward excellence, we have chosen to have them decorated in front of their peers, friends and families, particularly their spouses who have been greatly involved in their accomplishments.”

The CAS, however, implored their relatives not to relent in their support being one of the key motivators in any field of endeavour or career.

He said that promotion, though a reward for hard work, was however considered a privilege, urging them to brace up for the challenges ahead, especially as a collective resolve to rejuvenate NAF.

“I urge you all to be prepared to apply your skills, experience and time when and where it is demanded of you.

“As we continue in our march to build a new NAF, I encourage everyone of you to strive his quota by all means possible,” he advised.

Amao said that in a bid to provide a veritable guidelines for the personnel to effectively apply their skills to enable the service in delivering on its mandate, the NAF had so far made remarkable inroads.

This, Amao said, was in respect of doctrinal development, training, human capacity development, the sustenance of platforms, equipment and security, combat readiness and personnel welfare.

“Apart from these tremendous achievements, the service is poised to integrate its research and development efforts with civil sector so as to booster synergy in platform sustainability.

“Accordingly, we have been paying particular attention to join in combat training, and preparedness, greater social protection for our personnel.

“While also in ensuring that our service engages more with the Nigerian populace in relevant areas for enhanced national security.”

Amao commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his unflinching support to the Armed Forces particularly NAF, which had enabled it to carry out its constitutional mandate of protecting the territorial integrity of the country effectively.

The Special Guest of Honour, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Lucky Irabor, said that promotions, no doubt, brings emotional fulfillment for hardwork, but it also called for more dedication, perseverance and more responsibilities.

“Your elevations showed that you must have distinguished yourselves among other officers, therefore, I urge you all to see it as a privilege that goes with greater responsibilities.

“I want to remind of you the greater challenges ahead of you which calls for more seriousness and dedication at all time to meet the ever-changing security challenges.”

The CDS assured Nigerians that as we move into the year 2023, there were brighter hope and good things ahead.
