I have repositioned Nigerian Air Force in last one year – NAF Boss

In the spirit of nation building the Chief of Air Staff, CAF, Air Marshal Isiaka Amao has said that he has taken many bold steps to reposition the Nigerian Air Force in the last one year.

Air Marshal Amao’s vision for the NAF seeks ‘To enhance and sustain critical airpower capabilities required for joint force employment in pursuit of national security imperatives’. To give bite to the vision, the CAS fashioned out 5 main key drivers which included:

Focus on doctrinal development and application of airpower in joint military operations, pursue purposeful training and human capacity development; sustenance of platforms and equipment serviceability through innovative maintenance methods and logistics support systems;foster a disciplined workforce essential for combat readiness and bolster moral by improving personnel welfare.

In line with one of the key drivers of the CAS vision which focuses on doctrinal development and application of airpower in joint military operations, the NAF came up with development of 11 new doctrines. The development of the doctrines is in tandem with one of the key drivers of the CAS vision which is: “Focus on doctrinal development and application of airpower in joint military operations”.

He said that the doctrines are essentially based on analysis of the contemporary security environment as well as the operational experiences of the Service and the collective beliefs. Accordingly, all relevant competencies in the NAF are now guided by updated doctrines that are quite germane to NAF present operations. He has also pursued his vision for the Service, which among others, included, “to enhance and sustain critical air power capabilities required for joint force employment in pursuit of national security imperatives.”

The vision is hinged on five key drivers namely; focus on doctrinal development and application of airpower in joint military operations, pursuit of purposeful training and human capacity development as well as sustenance of platforms and equipment serviceability through innovative maintenance methods and logistics support systems. He highlighted that the other key drivers include fostering a disciplined workforce essential for combat readiness and bolstering morale by improving personnel welfare.

In the last one year the NAF has winged 56 pilots who graduated from various pilot courses both at home and abroad. In the same vein, officers, airmen and airwomen of the NAF are currently undergoing training in various countries including the United States of America, South Africa, India, Belgium, Egypt and Pakistan, amongst others. In addition, hundreds of personnel across all specialties are also being trained locally despite budgetary constraints. The NAF has also significantly boosted the capacity of its Regiment and Special Forces with additional training and equipment to improve operations in the fight against insurgency and other forms of criminality. Other areas that have received significant capacity boost include the training of engineers and technicians, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), education, administration and medical professionals amongst others.

In keeping with one of his key drivers which harps on purposeful training and human capacity development, the Aircraft Engineering Branch made concerted efforts to secure some foreign training slots for NAF engineers which were approved by the CAS. Other achievements include the conduct of Master Technician Course at Flight Safety International Wichita, USA, Advance Maintenance training on Mi-35P helicopter by Ukrainian Technical Team at 115 SOG, Conduct of Avionics Components Repair Course at CAOCC and NAFTRAC training of 453 aircraft engineering personnel on 13 aircraft types in the NAF. Major feats were also recorded in the sustenance of platforms and equipment serviceability through Innovative maintenance methods and logistics support systems.

The NAF embarked on construction of road and renovation 1 x Block of classroom at the Air Force Comprehensive School, Yola while it renovated the dilapidated Air Force Primary School, Ilorin to improve the quality of education in NAF schools. These are geared towards provision of qualitative education for dependants of personnel as well as members of the host communities.

Also, Master Edeani Izuchukwu, a student of Air Force Comprehensive School, Agbani, Enugu State emerged winner of the National Science Competitive Examination where he was awarded “774 Young Nigerian Scientists Presidential Award” by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo. In the same vein, Miss Feyisola Bolarinwa, a student of Air Force Girls Military School, Jos won the Bronze Award at the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition conducted by the Royal Commonwealth Society.

To enable NAF personnel and those outside the Service have the opportunity to channel their complaints and grievances against the Service or its personnel, the CAS during the year established the Office of the Ombudsman. The Office will serve as an independent instrument that will provide an objective and compassionate channel for seeking redress. In a bid to stimulate better welfare packages for NAF veterans and their families, the CAS also established the Directorate of Veteran Affairs. The Directorate is responsible for interfacing with similar structure s in sister Services towards harnessing necessary benefits for NAF retirees under existing Federal Government programmes for veterans, among other responsibilities.

Since the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) the NAF airlifted several government officials, equipment, and medical supplies in response to the outbreak. The Service also ensured that its Liquefied Oxygen (LOX) plant is on 24 hours operation to ensure uninterrupted production and supply to Isolation Centers across the country. In 2021, the NAF airlifted COVID-19 medical relief materials donated by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and other donor partners like Team Europe, the German Government, United Nations Development Programme & Deutsche Gesellschaft Fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The relief materials were airlifted from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to 14-member nations of ECOWAS. Additionally, in line with Mr President’s mandate to contribute towards winning the peace in troubled areas in the Country, the NAF has emplaced programmes aimed at alleviating the sufferings of IDPs as well as win the hearts and minds of those affected by the activities of BHTs and other criminal activities.

In his determination to improve the poor welfare package of temporary teaching staff in NAF Schools nationwide, which has been left unattended to by successive administrations, Air Marshal Amao recently approved a 50 per cent upward review of all temporary teachers in NAF primary and secondary schools nationwide. This increment is across board for both BSc and NCE certificate holders teaching in NAF Schools across the country. This has no doubt enhanced the morale of the teachers and improved their standards of living with positive consequences on their teaching outputs. The pupils of AFMS and AFGMS Jos also benefited from Air Marshal Amao’s magnanimity as he approved a 66.67 per cent increase of their ration allowance from N600 to N1,000, a measure which will go a long way in enhancing their nutrition and learning as well.

The NAF, in the last one year, has invested substantially in R&D to develop unprecedented capacity to surmount current and emerging security challenges while also enhancing its operational viability. These breakthroughs were realized under the guidance of the CAS, through the Air Force Research and Development Centre. Some of the R&D breakthroughs recorded included the refurbishment of unserviceable rocket launchers and BMGs back loaded from operations, test firing of locally produced 18-tube rocket launchers for A-jet aircraft and the production and deployment of 30.1mm rocket to 271 NAF Det Birnin-Gwari for operational usage. There were breakthroughs in the installation of generating system on Tsaigumi UAV, repair of quantity 2 x C-130H nose Radomes and production of a PGM prototype. These innovations have no doubt enhanced NAF’s operations and reduced to a large extent NAF’s over-dependence on foreign assistance thereby enabling the country make savings on foreign exchange.

Realising that the availability of key infrastructures such as accommodation, roads and water in NAF Bases nationwide enhances morale of troops which have positive implications on NAF operational output, the CAS has given approval for the construction of Concrete Platforms for Aircraft Arrestor System for the newly inducted JF-17 Aircraft at NAF Base Makurdi and the expansion of Military Apron and resurfacing of part of old runway and taxiway at 105 Composite G Maiduguri. The CAS also approved the construction of aircraft shelter and concrete pavement at NAF Base Bauch and helipad at Forward Operating Base, Ogoja. These efforts are aside the over 100 blocks of different types of living accommodation at various levels of completion in NAF Bases nationwide.

Upon assumption of office, Air Marshal Amao immediately approved the implementation of the NAF paperless process automation solution. This initiative which is currently at an advanced stage and the first of its kind in the entire Armed Forces of Nigeria, became necessary having observed NAF’s overdependent on paper in its daily correspondences, which has negative environmental impact and makes.

Amao has said that the NAF successes depends largely on human resource, technical and logistics support. Amao reiterated this at the Air force Institute of Technology (AFIT) 1st International Conference on Data Science and Engineering in Kaduna.

The two-day conference had the theme “Embracing Digital Transformation”.

Amao noted that NAF also depended mainly on engineering, ranging from airpower, aviation and integration of data with engineering.

He explained that data science and engineering was also very imperatives to the air force and that the conference would provide an opportunity and enabling environment for researchers, engineers, scientists, technologists, industrial specialists and decision makers to share experience and proffer solutions to issues concerning engineering as it relates highly to NAF. He was represented by AVM Emmanuel Chukwu, the Chief of Staff, Air Training Command.

Presenting a paper, Prof. Amos David of the department of information and communication services, Lorraine University, France, advocated for pervasive system of engineering, which required less human intervention because automated processes were included into objects.

“Therefore, you have sensors and data capture, and process them to organise things, however, the problem is what to be collated and for what purpose. He explained that the pervasive process would help in tracking criminals.

“For instance, if you book for flight or train, once you start the process there are traces of every data inputted in the system,” he explained.

The conference was very germane to AFIT, to help them complement the type of training they give to students. The objective of setting up AFIT was to enhance the maintenance capabilities of NAF personnel. That is the aircraft, and their aircraft platforms are highly computerised with technical systems. This is where conferences like this especially on how to capture, analyse and control their system is very important.

It is, therefore, with deep sense of responsibility that he promise that NAF must move determinedly and at great speed too to achieve the set goals the President and people as well as the resources have clearly marked for NAF.” In all, we will make the country proud,” he said.

However, postings and redeployments in the military are routine exercises intended to reinvigorate the Services for greater performance, enhanced productivity, operational efficiency, and effective service delivery. It is in view of the foregoing that Amao has recently approved the appointment of new Branch Chiefs, Air Officers Commanding (AOCs), Commandants of tri-Service and NAF institutions as well as Unit Commanders.

Some of the officers affected by the new postings Ayoola Jolasinmi, an air vice marshal, who was appointed as the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans (CDPP) at Defence Headquarters (DHQ), and Charles Ohwo, an air vice marshal, who is now the Chief of Policy and Plans (COPP), HQ NAF, Abuja.

Other notable senior officers posted are former Air Force spokesperson, Ibikunle Daramola who is now the AOC, GTC, Enugu and Abubakar Liman, an Air Vice Marshal who is now the spymaster (Chief of Air Intelligence).

Air Marshal Amao charged the officers to put in their best in order for the force to consolidate on the gains being recorded against all forms of criminality in the Country.

While congratulating the new appointees, the Chief of Air Staff, charged them to continually task and explore their critical thinking mind-sets towards proffering workable solutions and strategies to be deployed against the various security challenges in the Country.

This, the CAS noted, is imperative particularly at this period that the NAF, in tandem with sister Services and other security agencies, are consolidating on the gains being recorded against all forms of criminality in the Country. The newly appointed and redeployed senior officers are expected to assume their new offices on or before Friday, 7 January 2022.

He said the NAF would continue to do its best by leveraging credible partnerships, focusing on enhancing professionalism for high performance as well as motivational initiatives to create an enabling environment for its operations and personnel to thrive.

Amao promised to use his rich knowledge and experience, armed with this robust vision, to move the Nigerian Air Force to the next level, while building on the successes recorded by his predecessors.

“We will deploy some brave efforts to rescue our country from the despair that have been our lot. While I will sustain the strides attained by my predecessor, I will join hands with sister agencies to take Nigeria to the status of a work-in- progress. It’s very important to state here that we still need concerted effort to strike out in new direction.”

  • JUST IN: NAF denies paying bandits not to gun down Buhari’s plane

JUST IN: NAF denies paying bandits not to gun down Buhari’s plane

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has denied paying the sum of N20 million to bandits who operate in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State in exchange for a captured anti-aircraft gun.

The Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF Headquarters, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, made the denial in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the reason behind the payment was to retrieve the anti-aircraft gun which it alleged the NAF feared could be used against aircraft operating within the state.

“The NAF wishes to categorically state that there is absolutely no iota of truth in the spurious allegation that was undoubtedly designed to cast aspersions on the good image of the service.

“The said report is totally false. It should, therefore, be taken as a fake news and disregarded.

“Indeed, we ordinarily would not have responded to such baseless and utterly illogical allegation, but for the need to set the record straight and reaffirm the NAF’s unflinching commitment to decisively dealing with the bandits and all other criminal elements.

“For the avoidance of doubt, it must be stated that there is no basis for the NAF to pay bandits or any criminal elements that it has continued to attack and decimate in Katsina, as well as other parts of the North-West and other theatres of operation in the country.

“Indeed, as recent as Oct. 12, NAF aircraft conducted five missions in the Jibia general area and engaged targets with rockets and cannons at Bala Wuta bandits’ locations in Kadaoji.

“Similar successes were recorded at Fakai Dutsin Anfare, an area in Jibia known for its high incidences of bandits activities.

“The false reportage, therefore, begs the question as to why the NAF would negotiate for a weapon allegedly seized and still carry out air interdiction missions on the same bandits and their strongholds.

“The NAF is of the view that this latest false report could be a part of a campaign to further the cause of insecurity in Nigeria by elements who see NAF as a threat following a series of successful exploits in operations against criminal gangs.”

He, however, noted that the development was an avenue once again for NAF to appeal to members of the media, both national and international, and social media, to be circumspect in their reportage, as well as endeavour to always verify their facts before going public.

The director, however, enjoined the public to disregard the falsehood emanating from some sections of the social and mainstream media.

He added that NAF also used the opportunity to call on citizens to continue to cooperate with security agencies as efforts were ongoing to rid the entire country of criminals and their activities.

“On our part, NAF as a professional and disciplined force will not in any way be discouraged from carrying out its mandate to rid the entire North-West of banditry and other forms of criminality.

“We remain resolute in performing our function and will continue to work in synergy with other sister services and security agencies to rid the country of all criminal elements.”

  • REVEALED! How NAF paid bandits N20 million not to shoot down Buhari’s plane

REVEALED! How NAF paid bandits N20 million not to shoot down Buhari’s plane

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) coordinated ransom payments to armed bandits in exchange for an anti-aircraft gun seized from the Nigerian Army, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

According to the report, the desperate deal was brokered as President Muhammadu Buhari was planning a trip to Katsina State.

The U.S. outlet said N20 million was delivered to the bandits in Rugu Forest by a Nigerian Air Force official, who leaked details of the operation under anonymity, because the military realised that it would be too risky to leave the weapon in the hands of violent criminals operating in an area the presidential jet would fly over.

The rugged, lawless jungle that covers parts of Kaduna, Zamfara and the president’s home state of Katsina has served as a vast haven for bandits terrorising Nigeria’s northwestern communities. A large portion of kidnapping plots emanates or terminates in or around the forest, security agencies have previously warned.

“The mission to buy back the antiaircraft gun began with a handoff from a high-ranking air force intelligence officer in the capital Abuja: a black zip-up bag he said was full of 20 million Nigerian naira,” the paper reported, after stating that such military hardware in the hands of bandits “posed a threat to President Muhammadu Buhari, who had been planning to fly to his hometown about 80 miles away.”

The gun truck with 12.7 caliber anti-aircraft fire was reportedly disassembled and transported back to the military on motorbikes after the deal was concluded.

Meanwhile, The Journal did not specify when the deal was brokered or the presidential trip that was planned. The president has been in his hometown at least twice this year that his office disclosed to the public. The first trip was in late January and another in July.

Although the Nigerian government claimed combat victories against armed bandits, several military bases have been sacked by the violent criminals dreaded largely for their abduction of schoolchildren and prominent personalities, including politicians and emirs.

Last month, a forward operating base crucial to the military campaign against banditry was raided in Zamfara, leaving at least 12 officers killed. The bandits also seized military equipment when they captured the base in Dansadau, about 80 kilometres south of the capital Gusau, in the September 11 operation.

Less than two weeks later on September 24, bandits again struck a joint base of security forces in the neighbouring Sokoto State, killing several soldiers, Civil Defence officers and civilians.

The Nigerian Air Force also confirmed on July 19 that bandits had shot down one of its fighter jets, but the pilot was able to eject and there were no casualties. The incident came as Mr Buhari was visiting his hometown for this year’s Sallah.

It was not immediately clear why service chiefs opted for a ransom payment in the operation described by The Journal. Military weapons that fell into the hands of Boko Haram insurgents and bandits were usually destroyed by airstrikes.

Whereas Mr Buhari has promised to be tough on the bandits and publicly railed against governors negotiating with them, his government has been known to pay ransom to terrorists and other violent criminals.

The government paid millions of dollars to free some of the Chibok girls seized in 2014 under President Goodluck Jonathan. It also facilitated hundreds of millions of naira in ransom to bandits who seized schoolchildren in Niger State earlier this year.

The Gazette has yet to hear back from the Nigerian Air Force about the reported N20 million ransom to bandits.

  • Why we first denied killing civilians in Buhari village – NAF

Why we first denied killing civilians in Buhari village – NAF

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has opened up on why it first denied killing civilians in an attack carried out in Buhari village, Yunusari Local Government Area of Yobe State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports NAF’s fighter jet on Wednesday morning killed nine people in the village, but the Air Force denied being culpable.

However, NAF has explained that the initial release denying the involvement of it’s aircraft was based on a first report available to the Air Component, which was subsequently forwarded to NAF headquarters.

Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF Headquarters, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet gave the explanation in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

He opined that the report stated that civilians were bombed, and that the confusion resulted as the aircraft detailed for the mission was not carrying bombs.

Gabkwet explained that based on the report, a Board of Inquiry had since been set up to thoroughly investigate the circumstances of the incident.

“Following intelligence on insurgents movements along the Kamadougou Yobe River line, an aircraft from the Air Component of ‘Operation Hadin Kai’ was detailed to respond to the suspected insurgents activities in the area along the Nigeria/Niger border at about 0600hrs on Sept 15.

“The aircraft while operating South of Kanama observed suspicious movement consistent with the insurgents’ behaviour whenever a Jet aircraft was overhead.

“Accordingly, the pilot fired some probing shots. It is important to state that the area is well known for continuous insurgents activities.

“But unfortunately, reports reaching NAF Headquarters alleged that some civilians were erroneously killed while others were injured,” Gabkwet stated.

Meanwhile, Gov. Mai Mala-Buni of Yobe has directed government hospitals in Geidam and Damaturu to offer free medical services to those who sustained injuries in the disaster.

This is contained in a statement by Mr Buni’s spokesperson, Mamman Mohammed, in Damaturu on Thursday.

Buni also directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide relief materials to victims.

NAF aircraft bombard bandits logistics base in Zamfara, Katsina; kill scores in Kawara Forest

In the wake of aggressive bombardments by military air troops which have killed several bandits in Zamfara State in the last one week, a logistics base set up by criminals in Kaduna State has been destroyed by airstrikes of Nigerian military fighter aircraft.

The logistics facility, which PRNigeria, gathered was being used by bandits hiding at Kawara Forest in Igabi Local area of Kaduna State.

Sources also said no fewer than 50 bandits were killed by bombs shelled at the bandits’ logistics facility at the weekend.

According to one of the sources, a military air officer, a reconnaissance mission by Nigerian Air Force, NAF, helicopter gunships had intercepted a large gathering of bandits dressed in black clothes with rustled cattle around Kawara Village in Giwa local government area.

“On sighting the aircraft, the bandits ran and hid in between the cattle, while navigating their movement.

“After clustering at a water crossing point, the bandits were struck in successive passes by the aircraft.

“Some casualties that were spotted to be struggling to scamper for safety were also successfully neutralized by the aircraft.

“A reverse trail back to their initial departure point revealed a possible logistics base which was also struck until it went into flames.

“Sources on the ground at Kawara on Monday confirmed that at least 50 dead bodies of the bandits were counted while their motorcycles and food items were destroyed at the camps during the attack,” he said.

Abayomi Dairo, pilot who survived NAF aircraft crash shares testimony

Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo, pilot of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) who recently escaped an aircraft crash has shared testimony of his survival.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Flight Lieutenant Dairo got the aircraft he was battling bandits with shot down by the enemies recently.

Luckily, the gallant pilot successfully ejected from the aircraft.

Read testimony of Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo below:

Thank you so much everybody. I’m indebted to Bro Ekele and bro Olagbende, and everyone on this platform.

Before Sunday I had been having dreams where I saw myself fighting and evading enemies like real-time war, day in day out, like nightmares, so when my jet got shot with the explosives and my flight controls were destroyed and I had no choice than to eject, I just said ‘God, finally, here we go’.

As I was flanked by the bandits, I kept praying and I kept telling God to answer your prayers because I know you were all praying for me. I love you all. And I thank God for bestowing his love on me and saving me from death several times within that period.

I will still share my testimonies but truly, God ordered my steps, the bandits (meanwhile they are ruthless like Boko haram, I dunno why we still call them bandits) were more interested in capturing me than shooting me at (even at point blank range), eventually they got neither.

He gave me the strength to run and walk covering almost 30kms even with one strained leg.

Having not had any food or water all day, I prayed for strength because I needed it, and he gave me.

I can spend hours talking of how I lost and regained hope multiple times throughout my adventure, but God is faithful.

It’s now I’m feeling all the pains I suffered from the ejection (including a fracture in my neck and painful back and chest), but God didn’t allow those pains to slow me down for the bandits to capture me.

NAF platforms overhead also helped me to deter them a lot by making some of them to pin down while I kept running, and when they got close to me, I was still able to evade them by camouflaging (I was wearing green fg suits – in the green forest) and concealing myself.

I ran into plenty spiders and I laid down several times out of weakness not knowing if anything poisonous would sting or bite me. All glory is to God, all glory.

I have not been your most righteous brother, but I felt God’s hands in everything, even in every decision I took immediately I was shot, all the decisions worked together to save my life.

Eg, removing my phone from my lap and putting it in my G -suit before pulling the ejection handle (I had to use the compass of the phone and AirNav Pro application to navigate), and making the decision to turn hard 90 degrees immediately the bandits lost sight of me on a sandy cliff where they couldn’t trace my footpath again (the CAS told me they got information that in turn, the bandits kept going straight in the direction I was initially going and they destroyed several villages and camps, killing plenty people, thinking those people harbored me).

So much more… The village I eventually entered at night, I told God that the first person I see and call should favour me and that happened, he gave me clothes, pain-relieving drugs, food and water and even malt, and he organized for a bike to carry me to DanSadau early next morning (throughout the night I couldn’t sleep, I was praying that the bandits don’t attack the village because my right leg was already swollen and very painful so I couldn’t jump fences or run again, plus I didn’t want to bring death upon innocent people, and it may force the guy to give me out to the bandits…).

They dropped me with their Emir who with pride and joy called the Army guys to come and meet me (they all had sleepless nights). NAF helicopters came to pick me up from there. There are so much to say. All thanks to God, thank you so much
