NAF airstrikes eliminate 30 terrorist kingpins, fighters in Borno

The Air component of the Operation Hadarin Kai (OPHK), has executed a precision airstrike on the hideouts of ISWAP terrorists, killing over 30 of their fighters within Kolleram village along the shores of Lake Chad.

This is contained in a statement by AVM Edward Gabkwet, the Director, Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force (NAF), on Tuesday in Abuja.

Gabkwet said the airstrikes conducted on April 13, were a decisive blow against terrorism in the North-East.

He said the operation yielded significant success as the Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) post-strike conducted revealed the neutralisation of over 30 terrorists.

Gabkwet said that among those neutralised were some senior commanders of the insurgents including Ali Dawud, Bakura Fallujah, and Mallam Ari.

“Additionally, numerous vehicles, motorcycles, and logistical assets were destroyed, severely hampering the terrorists’ operational capabilities.

“Intelligence gathered after the air strike further indicated that the aerial bombardment effectively obliterated a key facility within the Kolleram enclave, which served as a hub for the terrorists’ food processing activities, including grinding machines.

“The success of these airstrikes underscores NAF’s commitment to eradicating terrorism and ensuring the safety and security of Nigerian citizens.

“By neutralising key terrorist figures and destroying their logistical infrastructure, the operation has significantly degraded the capabilities of the ISWAP group in the region.

“These airstrikes complement the ongoing efforts of ground forces in the Lake Chad flank and represent a crucial step forward in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria,” he said.

NAF bombs 3 terrorists camps in Zamfara

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), has bombed three terrorists camps in Zamfara on Wednesday, eliminating several of them and their structures.

The operation was conducted by the Air Component of Operation Hadarin Daji, NAF Spokesman, AVM Edward Gabkwet, said in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

Gabkwet said the camps destroyed belong to terrorist kingpins, Abdullahi Nasanda in Zurmi, Malam Tukur in Gusau, and another in MaradunLocal Government Areas of Zamfara.

He said that Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions were conducted on Nasanda’s Camp where terrorists’ activities were sighted and their hidden motorcycles.

“Having established that their activities were consistent with terrorists’ modes of operation, the location was struck by multiple aircraft passes, thereby neutralizing several terrorists.

“Similar ISR missions were conducted at Malam Tukur camp, where terrorists’ activities were also observed.

“Air strikes conducted on the camp neutralised several terrorists and showed several structures set ablaze and destroyed.

  • Military air strikes kill dozens of terrorists in Katsina, Borno

Military air strikes kill dozens of terrorists in Katsina, Borno

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says the Air Component of Operations Hadarin Daji and Hadin Kai have in different air interdictions, killed dozens of terrorists in Katsina and Borno  during the weekend.

The Director, Public Relations and Information, NAF, AVM Edward Gabkwet, made this known in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Gabkwet said the streak of successful air strikes denied terrorists freedom of movement aimed at targeting soft targets, especially innocent civilians.

He said that one of such strikes were carried out on April 5,  at a terrorist enclave located in the North West of Yartsamiya Village in Danmusa Local Government Area of Katsina.

According to him, a set of 11 armed terrorists were sighted moving toward a mountainous area at the location.

“Soon after, two separate sets of terrorists joined the first set of terrorists, and all were observed heading toward the same direction toward the mountainous high ground.

“The need not to let the opportunity of neutralising the terrorists thus became imperative.

“Subsequently, the terrorists were effectively engaged by NAF aircraft in several passes with several neutralised and the few survivors scampering in disarray,” he said.

Gabkwet said the air strikes by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai had in the early hours of Saturday at Grazah in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno, also yielded the requisite outcome.

He said the previous intelligence had revealed that Grazah, previously known as a hideout for terrorists, was converted into a logistics storage hub and an area for fabricating their Improvised Explosive Devices and other ammunition.

According to him, recent intelligence also revealed significant terrorists’ activities consistent with terrorists’ behaviour around some makeshift structures at the location.

“Consequently, air interdiction was conducted at the location with Battle Damage Assessment footages and feedback received revealing several terrorists neutralised.

“These operations, carried out deep into terrorists’ enclaves, will continue as these areas are believed to aid their recruitment, training and nurturing of potential terrorists.

“Attacking their logistics hubs also help in reducing their ability to carry out massive attacks, especially on innocent civilians and troop’s location.

“The provision of timely information/intelligence by the populace has also been key to the successes recorded and will remain so if sustained,” he added.

The President called for discipline in operations and the establishment of a robust maintenance culture to maximise the benefits derived therein.

He commended the NAF for standing as a dependable regional power and emphasised his administration’s dedication to supporting it.

Tinubu said it was also a reflection of his commitment to eradicating terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping, and other criminal activities that had plagued the country for years.

According to him,  though substantial progress has been achieved in ongoing counterterrorism efforts, there should be no cause for celebration until the security challenges are fully addressed.

He called for a change in mind set, strategy and tactics in addressing the menace.

In his remarks, the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Muhammed Badaru, acknowledged the sincerity of purpose of President Tinubu toward restoring peace in every part of Nigeria.

Badaru thanked the President for his foresight, resilient leadership, and unwavering support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria, in spite of the numerous challenges confronting the nation.

  • By-elections: INEC seeks NAF’s support for logistics delivery

By-elections: INEC seeks NAF’s support for logistics delivery

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday,  support of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) for election materials delivery.

The deliveries would be made to the North-East, South-East and the South-West geo-political zones of the country, for the Saturday, Feb. 3  rerun and by-elections.

The INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu stated this when he visited the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar in Abuja , over  the  re-run and by-elections holding in 26 states of the federation.

Yakubu said the elections would fill vacancies in three Senatorial Districts, 17 Federal and 28 State Constituencies spread across 80 Local Government Areas.

He added that the elections holding in 575 Registration Areas/Wards and 8,934 Polling Units,  involved 4,904,627 registered voters out of which 4,613,291 Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) had  been collected.

“In handling such a huge national assignment, the commission cannot do it alone. That is why we seek to mobilise every national asset, including NAF.

“It is in realisation of this objective that the law empowers the commission to seek the support of the security, intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

“The commission needs their support in the delivery of materials and the protection of election officials as clearly provided for in Section 27(3) of the Electoral Act 2022.

“The elections are holding on Saturday. Working with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), materials are being delivered to many locations.

“However, given the size and distance of some constituencies, we seek for the support of NAF to expeditiously deliver materials to the North-East, South-East and the South-West geo-political zones of the country.

“We have already indicated to the chief of the air staff,  the specific locations and the tonnage of materials to be airlifted.”

According to him, the evacuation of the materials from the focal airports to the states where election will hold will be handled by the commission and the CBN as has been the standard practice.

“Thereafter, the inspection and movement of all materials to the various local government areas and beyond will be done with the full participation of all stakeholders, particularly agents of political parties and candidates, observers and the media in a transparent manner,” he said.

Yakubu commended NAF for its cooperation in  security and logistic support  and  for the timely delivery of materials during the  general elections, off-cycle elections, by-elections, supplementary elections and rerun elections.

“I want to place on record the neutrality and professionalism of NAF in particular and armed forces in general in discharging your responsibilities.

“There has been no unhappy incidents or compromise on the part of your officers and airmen,” Yakubu said.

In his remarks, the CAS, Abubakar, assured INEC that the force would continue to support the commission to deliver credible elections to strengthen the country’s democracy.

Abubakar said the relationship between NAF and INEC had been anchored on shared objectives geared toward ensuring that good governance, stability and the rule of law reign throughout Nigeria.

The CAS described visit of Yakubu as a sign of commitment to strengthen the bonds between both organisations.

“The successful conduct of elections is largely hinged on robust security and well-choreographed logistics supply chain management.

“The NAF has been INEC’s dependable partner in providing security in addition to rapid airlift for the distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive electoral materials across the country.

“I assure you that we remain willing  and able and ready to continue supporting INEC as we have always done in the past.

“At the moment, our C-130s are currently undergoing maintenance but we have other aircraft that can be employed to move sensitive materials.

“The caveat is that we need to move those materials a little earlier due to the capacity of the airplanes which we have available,” he said.

Abubakar commended the contributions and numerous initiatives of INEC under Yakubu’s watch toward deepening of Nigeria’s democracy,  including serving as shining example for other nations of the world.

Some of the initiatives according to Abubakar include continuous voter registration, introduction of new technologies, voter education and sensitisation and post-election reviews.

“Another laudable milestone achieved was the Electoral Act of 2022, which introduced reforms aimed at more timely organisation of pre-electoral processes and increasing transparency in results collation and reporting.

“These and many more reforms have raised the bar of transparency and credibility in our electoral process.

“We thus join the chorus of voices commending your efforts and stand proud as friends of your esteemed organisation,” he said.

Abubakar said the success of Nigeria democracy had been underpinned by strong institutions such as  INEC, which worked  tirelessly to allow all citizens to enjoy the right to decide who should govern them in free and fair elections.

“The invaluable contributions of the INEC, distinguishes democracy as a form of governance unparalleled in its commitment to the people.

“Furthermore, it lends credence to the slogan that democracy is the best form of government known to man,” he said.

Abubakar, however, reminded the INEC chairman that there were some outstanding bills which were yet to be cleared, which Yakubu interjected “ but not from INEC”.

Yakubu said that the settlement of those bills would enable the force to serve INEC better.

Gabkwet added that reconnaissance trips showed that the gang was massing up for a likely attack or kidnapping of vulnerable civilians, hence the need to immediately attack the location.

“Intelligence report received after the strike revealed that Janari was indeed eliminated alongside several other terrorists and kidnappers.

“Similar airstrikes were also carried out on Saturday on confirmed terrorists and kidnappers’ hideouts near Chukuba in Niger with various degrees of success.

“We shall continue to synergise with sister services and other security agencies in our resolve to eliminate all forms of criminality in the country.

“Let me seize this opportunity to commend officers, air men and air women of the Nigerian Air Force for their commitment and sacrifices,’’ he said.

Abubakar noted that BASA was an annual event held to celebrate end-of-year activities and showcase and celebrate Nigeria’s diverse cultures and unity and encourage cooperation between security forces.

“It is heart-warming to see this colourful gathering of comrades, families and friends of the air force family.

“It also aims at fostering comradeship and regimentation amongst personnel and our esteemed families,’’ he added.

Abubakar urged air force personnel present to take a moment to remember their colleagues at the frontlines who might not have the opportunity to be part of the activities.

He also urged them to use the event to celebrate those not present and most importantly to appreciate their sacrifices to the nation.

In his remarks, Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, commended NAF personnel for their commitment and dedication to the service of their fatherland.

Matawalle said Abubakar’s motivation of air force personnel inspired the end-of-year event, and urged him to strive more for greater and more effective NAF in 2024.
