BREAKING: Tinubu vows to review Buhari’s Naira Swap Policy, old, new notes to remain

    …to unify exchange rates

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that his administration will review the recent currency swap policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and old and new notes to remain in circulation.

The president stated that the application of the currency swap by the apex bank was too harsh considering the number of unbanked Nigerians.

Tinubu stated while delivering his inaugural address after been sworn into office at the Eagle Square in Abuja on Monday.

He assured that he would work towards unifying the exchange rate in order to direct funds into meaningful investments.

According to him, a unified exchange rate would be in creating equipment and jobs that would power the economy.

He also said interest rates would be reduced to increase investment in such a way that would sustain the economy at a higher level.

The old and new notes will remain in circulation.

Banks comply with CBN’s directive to work weekends

Banks in satellite towns of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on Saturday opened for business as directed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

A correspondent who monitored some banks in the Territory, reports that huge crowds of customers were seen at banks’ Automated Teller Machines (ATM) galleries.

Customers were also seen standing on queues entering the banking halls one after another.

The banks that opened for operations along Nyanya-Mararaba road include First City Monument Bank (FCMB), United Bank for Africa (UBA), Zenith Bank, First Bank, Fidelity Bank, Ecobank, and Access Bank, among others.

Mrs. Ngozi Ugoh, a customer at Access Bank said that although she did not know about the CBN directive, she entered to get some cash when she saw a large crowd in her bank.

”I didn’t know about the directive of opening at weekends but I was just passing by and saw people so I entered to see if I can get some cash,” she said.

Another customer, Mr. Andy Jerry seen at Zenith Bank described the development as a welcome one.

He alleged that banks were complying with the CBN directive to work during the weekend to shelve the planned protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to the apex bank.

”I think the CBN compelled banks to work weekends so that the protest by NLC will not hold.

”I like this because it will give more time for people to access cash,” he said.

Miss Stephanie Ikpe commended the CBN for the directive.

She said the development would help reduce the cash crunch currently being experienced by the masses.

Ikpe appealed to the CBN to monitor banks to ensure that their weekends operation continued.

The CBN on Friday through the Acting Director, Corporate Communication s Department, said that a substantial amount of money in various denominations had been received by commercial banks.

The apex bank also directed all commercial banks to open for operations on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Jama’atu Izalatul Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS) in Bauchi State, on Friday, appealed to the Federal Government to make naira notes available during Ramadan.

The Chairman, Tafsir Committee Kasuwan Shanu JIBWS mosque, Alhaji Hassan Gwani, made the appeal for more naira notes during the opening of this year’s annual Ramadan tafsir.

He said, “Ramadan is here again and the currency meant for daily purchases is not available thereby making the situation difficult for people to buy what they need.

“If the FG wants the policy to be received with open arms and successful, the new naira notes should be made available for people to spend.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Executive Council has felicitated the Muslim faithful as they commenced the month-long Ramadan fast.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, conveyed the congratulatory message on behalf of FEC on Friday, in a statement issued by the Director of Information, Office of the SGF, Mr Willie Bassey.

In Jigawa State, the government has reduced the official working hours in the state by two hours during the period of Ramadan.

The state Head of the Civil Service, Hussaini Kila, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists by his Public Relations Officer, Ismail Dutse.

According to the statement, civil servants in the state would report to the office at 9 am and close by 3pm instead of 5pm between Monday and Thursday.

“Furthermore, workers would report to work on Fridays by 9 am and close by 1 pm as usual. It is also hoped that civil servants would use the fasting period to pray for the peace and economic prosperity of the state and Nigeria at large,” the statement said.

On his part, former vice-president Atiku Abubakar called on Muslims to use the holy month to seek spiritual guidance and sacrifice to the cause of peace.

Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the just concluded elections, gave the advice in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

He said, “It is quite clear that the essential principles of this holy month are what we need to heal our wounds, both as individuals and as a country.”

Bamidele said, “Most importantly, our Muslim brothers should look beyond seeing this period for personal spiritual fortification. They should pray against insecurity, corruption, ethnic tension, and nepotism that is afflicting the nation and quaking our bond of unity and collective destiny.”

  • Lagos residents share ordeal after accepting old notes from banks

Lagos residents share ordeal after accepting old notes from banks

Some Lagos residents have expressed regrets for collecting the old N500 and N1,000 notes from commercial banks, after the Supreme Court judgment validating it as legal tender till Dec. 31.

In separate interviews that it had been challenging spending the two old notes as Nigerians were not accepting the money for their daily transactions.

They also said it was surprising that two days after the judgment, banks started paying between N5,000 and N10,000 per customer, compared with N3,000 and N5,000 that were dispensed from their Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) during cash swap period.

Mr Matthew Aburime, a student of Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu, who expressed disappointment, said he had been unable to spend the money he collected from a bank.

“I came from Ikorodu to Ajao Estate to spend some time with my grandmother, unfortunately for me, when it was time for me to go back to my base, there was no liquid cash to be given to me.

“Someone, then, told me that a nearby bank was paying old notes. Since it was from a commercial bank, I felt they would pay based on the instruction of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“Then, I went and queued, eventually, I was able to withdraw N10,000 from the bank.

“As we speak, the money is still with me, I’ve not been able to spend it; the first rejection was from commercial bus driver.

Aburime urged President Muhammadu Buhari or the Central Bank Governor to make a pronouncement on whether to accept it or not.

“They, being quiet is making people lose more money,” he said.

According to him, their quietness has also given some people the power to cheat and commit heinous act like the excess charges from the PoS agents.

Mr. Daniel Okpulonu, a trader, also shared same regrets.

“When I realised that these old notes that I was receiving from my bank was not legal tender was when a bank official announced that people who had received the old notes should not bother bringing it back to deposit, as it would not be acceptable.

“As we speak, I am still going about with the money, looking out for where I can spend it. All to no avail.

“This is not good enough, government should come out and tell us what they want from us, Nigerians have suffered enough since the inception of this policy,” he said.

Mr Brian Achilefu, a Clergy, blamed the situation on the inability of many banks to dispense the old notes after the Supreme Court judgement.

According to him, it is not a good sign when institutions begin to disrespect the authority of the Supreme Court.

“The CBN should obey the court ruling and do as it ordered, so that people and everything can go back to normal,” he said.

However, Mrs. Abimbola Alli, a trader at Jakande Estate Market, Okeafa, told NAN she only accepts new notes.

According to her, she took the few old notes that she accepted from her customers to the bank, but she was turned back.

“Is that the situation that you want for me again? Never will I collect old notes again.

“Other traders are not collecting old notes in this market; I was the only one accepting it.

“When I could not deposit it in my bank and Okada riders also refused to accept it, I decided not to accept it anymore,” she said.

The Supreme Court on March 3 ordered that the old Naira notes should be allowed in circulation along with the new notes until Dec. 31.

Rally: APC denies Tinubu throwing Naira notes at Lagos crowd

Lagos State Chapter of  APC has described as fake, a report that the party’s Presidential Candidate, Sen. Bola Tinubu, threw Naira notes at a crowd in Lagos on Tuesday during the party’s grand finale rally.

The rally was held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

APC’s Publicity Secretary in Lagos State, Mr Seye Oladejo, said in a statement that the report emanated from the party’s opponents who were dazed by the success of the rally.

Oladejo said that the political opponents resorted “to planting fictional story of Naira-throwing by our candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu”.

He added: “In a currently trending post, the orchestrated report purports that Asiwaju Tinubu threw wads of bank notes to a cheering crowd at Oshodi as his motorcade rode past from Lagos airport enroute Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

“It is nothing but a lie from the pit of hell.

“It is part of an ongoing well-oiled campaign of calumny in a compromised section of the media to project Asiwaju in bad lights at a time millions of Nigeria are unable to access their hard-earned cash deposited in the banks.

“Asiwaju has championed the cause of long-suffering Nigerians that they be allowed to spend old bank notes pending when CBN is able to make adequate new bank notes available.

“Where will Asiwaju have seen new notes to be throwing on Lagos highways?”

The spokesman said that the party would have ignored the report but chose to issue the statement for the sake of those who might be deceived by the report.

According to him, a closer look at a short video attached to the referenced report will reveal that two APC leaders are the ones actually throwing branded APC fez caps and leaflets to the cheering crowd,

” It is certainly not Naira notes.

“We urge our supporters and all right-thinking Nigerians to remain calm and vote Asiwaju Tinubu and all APC candidates on Saturday, Feb. 25,” Oladejo said.

  • Only N200 old notes to be reissued, circulated – CBN

Only N200 old notes to be reissued, circulated – CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says only N200 old notes are to be reissued and circulated concurrently with the new notes in line with the directives of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The bank restated this in a statement jointly signed by Mr. Edward  Adamu, Deputy Governor, Corporate Services, and Mr. Osita Nwanisobi, Director, Corporate Communications, CBN, on Tuesday in Lagos.

The CBN said that Buhari had not given any approval for the old denominated notes to be reissued and re-circulated as legal tender for 70 days up to May 1, as stated in a fake press release.

“The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria has been drawn to a FAKE PRESS RELEASE purported to have emanated from the Bank.

“The fake press release purported that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the reissuance and release of old N500 and N1000 notes as legal tender in the country.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Central Bank of Nigeria reiterates that in line with the directives of Mr. President, only N200 old notes are to be reissued and to circulate concurrently with the new notes.

“Members of the public are therefore advised to ignore this fake news,” it said.

It added that the bank was working with the law enforcement agencies to investigate, apprehend and prosecute the purveyors of this fake news.

The statement urged Nigerians to be guided and to ignore the fake press release credited to the President.

  • SERAP drags Buhari to court over ban on old N500, N1,000 notes

SERAP drags Buhari to court over ban on old N500, N1,000 notes

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has filed a lawsuit against President Muhammadu Buhari over “the unlawful directive banning the use of old N500 and N1,000 banknotes, contrary to the interim injunction granted by the Supreme Court that the old N200, N500, and N1000 notes remain legal tender.”

Joined in the suit as defendants are the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, and the Central Bank of Nigeria.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the Supreme Court in a case initially brought by 10 states recently held that the old banknotes remain legal tender pending the determination of a motion on notice fixed for February 22. The deadline for the swap of the old notes expired on February 10.

However, Buhari in a national broadcast on Thursday directed the CBN to recirculate only the old N200 banknotes, banning the use of old N500 and N1,000 notes in the country.

In the suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/233/2023 filed last Friday at the Federal High Court, Abuja, SERAP is asking the court to determine “whether Buhari’s directive banning the N500 and N1,000 banknotes is not inconsistent and incompatible with the constitutional duties to obey decisions of the Supreme Court and oath of office.”

SERAP is asking the court for “a declaration that Buhari’s directive banning the use of old N500 and N1,000 banknotes is a fundamental breach of section 287(1) of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended) and his constitutional oath of office, and therefore unconstitutional, unlawful, null and void.”

It also seeks an order of interim injunction restraining Buhari, the CBN and Malami, their agents or privies, from further enforcing the presidential directive banning the old N500 and N1,000 banknotes, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed in its suit.

SERAP drags Buhari to court over ban on old N500, N1,000 notes

The suit was filed on behalf of SERAP by its lawyers Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN, and Kolawole Oluwadare.

SERAP is also asking the court for the following reliefs:

    A declaration that by virtue of section 287(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, 1999, Buhari, the CBN and Malami have a constitutional duty to obey and enforce any decisions and orders of the Supreme Court, particularly the order allowing the use of old N200, N500 and N1,000 banknotes;

    An order restraining and stopping the CBN from carrying out and giving effect to the directive of the President directing and approving that the old N500 and N1,000 banknotes are no longer legal tender and the old N200 banknote will cease to be legal tender on April10, 2023, in compliance with the order of the Supreme Court of Nigeria made on February 8, 2023 in the Suit Number SC/CV/162/2023 – Attorney General of Kaduna State & two Ors v. Attorney General of the Federation;

And an order for the CBN to direct all commercial banks in Nigeria to accept and give out the old N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes as legal tender concurrently along with the new banknotes of the same denomination in line with the order of the Supreme Court.

However, no date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

  • Buhari acted on wrong advice over N500, N1000 notes – Keyamo

Buhari acted on wrong advice over N500, N1000 notes – Keyamo

The spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council (APC-PCC), Festus Keyamo, has said that President Buhari acted on a wrong advice to his directive on the naira swap policy.

Recall that on Thursday, February 16, President Buhari in a national broadcast on the controversial policy, ordered that the old N200 banknotes remain in circulation till April 10, while the old N500 and N1,000 bills no longer serve as legal tender.

The ensuing currency scarcity has led to protests across the country with several cases of ATMs destroyed, as well as banking facilities and property damaged.

Speaking on Channels on Friday night, February 17, Keyamo said

‘’My view is that the President acted honestly without intention to slight the Supreme Court. But he may have acted on wrong advice. I did not give that advice; it is not my responsibility. I don’t know who gave that advice. I want to say this openly because tomorrow, people will ask me where I stood at this time.”he said

The Minister of State for Labour stated that President Buhari’s speech acknowledged that there were certain matters in court and that the President believed he was playing safe by purportedly intervening to quell the growing tension across the country.

“He thought he was playing safe by saying, ‘Before you decide this matter in court, may I just provide some middle ground so that country burning, there are riots everywhere, so let me just try and provide some succour to the people, whilst acknowledging the matters are in court.

Now, if I were to advise him, I would have advised differently. I did not advise him. It’s not my responsibility; I don’t know who.”

Asked what his counsel to the President would have been, Keyamo said it would be for him to “comply strictly with the terms of the order of the Supreme Court, [which is that] all the old notes should circulate for now side by side with the new notes because that is the order of the Supreme Court.”

He added that by virtue of the constitution, “all authorities in Nigeria must obey the orders of the Supreme Court, “adding that anything to the contrary is “a descent to anarchy.”

  • Police warn protesters against disturbing public peace on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway

Police warn protesters against disturbing public peace on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway

The Police Command in Ogun on Friday, warned protesters against disrupting public peace on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The Police Spokesman in the state, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, gave the warning while speaking with NAN, in Ota, Ogun.

Oyeyemi said the people had the right to protest, but, they should not disrupt public peace.

“The police will not allow people to constitute nuisance by breaking the in the state,” he said.

The spokesman said all Area Commanders of Police had been deployed to maintain and restore peace on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

Angry protesters blocked the Sango-Ota, Ifo, Papa, and Itori highways on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, over refusal of petrol stations to collect the old N500 and N1,000 notes.

A correspondent who monitored the development observed that the protesters were seen playing football on the expressway while motorists and passengers were stranded for several hours.

A commercial driver, Mr. Tope Bankole, said most petrol stations were the major cause of the protests because they refused to collect the old N500 and N1,000 notes.

Bankole said he had over N130,000 of the N1,000 notes, adding that he tried to used some of the money to buy petrol but the old notes were rejected.

According to him, petrol stations are supposed to be collecting these old notes because commercial drivers can only spend the money at filling stations.

“There would not have been problem if the filling stations were collecting the old N500 and N1,000 notes,” Bankole said.

He said the cash crunch, inability to withdraw money from ATMs and non-acceptance of old notes by filling stations affected the poor masses.

Bankole said the poor masses were fighting themselves while the rich people were not feeling the pains.

One of the protesters, Ismail Sanni, said the protesters decided to express their grievances because of non acceptance of the old N500 and N1,000 notes.

Sanni said the current cash crunch, inability to withdraw from the ATMs and rejection of the old notes had inflicted serious pains on the masses.

He said the inability of the masses to withdraw their money from the banks was frustrating the lives of the average Nigerians.

President Mohammadu Buhari, on Thursday, said the old N200 should be used with the new notes till April 10, while the old N500 and N1,000 notes ceased to be legal tender in the country.

Naira scarcity: Drama as man takes N50m old notes in sack bags to CBN (PHOTOS)

An unidentified man has caused a stir in one of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) branches in Kano when he went to deposit N50 million old naira notes.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday, February 16, 2023, insisted that the old 1,000 and 500 notes are no longer legal tender.

Following the directive, CBN urged citizens with old notes to visit any of its branches across the federation to deposit them.

CBN insisted that no Nigerian will lose their legitimate money and its office will be ready to collect the old naira notes.

The unidentified man was accosted in a now-viral video, with many asking why he waited this long to deposit his old notes.

The man chuckled as he answered a question presented by the Central Bank of Nigerian (CBN) officials as he marched directly to the CBN headquarters with four men carrying large sack bags.

In response, the man said the money belongs to him and he is a trader in Kano state.

When he was asked why he is just depositing the money now he responded: “I am a trader and sell flour.”

How much do you have here with you, another person asked. “I have 50 million naira cash, It is my money.”

After the video ended at the CBN office gate, it’s unclear if the person was permitted to deposit the N50 million cash.
